John Rawls (1921-2002) was one of the greatest political philosopher of twentieth century. He is credited to have revived normative political theory by writing his magnum opus ‘A Theory of Justice’ (1971). He provided a new philosophical foundation for liberal political theory and became an essential thinker of contemporary political theory.
Rawls persuasively articulated his main contention in “ A Theory of Justice” that an ideal state can be built on a profound theory of justice. Then he led us to believe through his methodological prowess and philosophical understanding that the type of justice he talks of is the right one.His propositions are simple and then he works hard to prove them right with his own counter questions and their logical answers. It is a modern text that uses meta narrative to derive at a general theory of justice which according to him can become base of a constitutional democracy wherein rational persons would prefer to live. The book is a result of more then fifteen years of labour on part of John Rawls. When settled down in his career, Rawls concentrated on the problem of finding an ideal form of government based on a universal idea.He believed that it is justice that can be primary virtue of social institution and can provide stability and fair form of government.
Later on Rawls came out with two books namely Political Liberalism (1993) and The Law of Peoples (1999) to complete his theory of justice. In these books Rawls modified his ideal theory to change it into political theory of justice which is sultable for a liberal state. He also applied his theory of justice at international political scene wherein exist different types of states. In developing his triology Rawls has seriously examined various important criticisms of his theory and on that basis suitably amended his theory. He is among a rare academic who devoted his whole life in providing a complete theory of justice without getting distracted to other political /philosophical problems of the day. Rawlsian theory of justice became an important part of study of contemporary political theory all over the world.
The book is an attempt ro simplify Rawlsian thesis and thus will be useful for teachers, researchers, students or anyone interested in knowing Rawlsian theory of justice. It is useful for at least four traditional disciplines : philosophy, political science, law and economics.
