Back in 2011, an incidental finding whilst getting injured playing cricket set up a chain of events which would change my life forever!
The autobiography is told in an honest and very candid way, from the very first diagnosis in 2011 right up to the present day, showing how I was forced to crowdfund to have my leg amputated and what it took to overcome the struggles of four operations and what it meant for the rest of my life, for me and my young family.
The book is very open and honest with how it explains the trials and tribulations of becoming an amputee and all that goes along with it.
What an absolutely outstanding book. The author tells his harrowing story in a very honest and inspiring way. What he had to cope with over the last 12 years would break most people but the author seems to take it all in his Stride. I highly recommend everyone to read this book.
Full disclosure: I’ve known of the author for some time, as we are members of a couple of online groups together. I therefore know something of the journey that he describes in this book and, to some extent, that means that I come at this review from a different angle to a lot of people. What I can say, though, is that so far as I can tell the events that he describes here are exactly as he has described them many times before. To my mind at least, that makes this a very truthful and honest account.
This isn’t a book that has been vigorously polished by an editor. There’s a breathless charm to the narrative, which gives you the welcome impression that the writer is as engaged by the telling of his story as you are in reading it. If anything, there are parts where he races on too quickly, where you want to know more about what happened or for him to fill in some gaps in the narrative. With a sad inevitability he devotes some time to other peoples’ discriminatory responses to his disability, but he does so with sensitivity and without letting his feelings detract from the strength of his writing.
In short, this is an excellent, insightful, book which was an absolute pleasure to read.
Reading this book brings you into the depths of Rob's mind from the beginning when he had his accident to the current day. You can feel the trauma and emotions that he went through and the absolute gratitude he has for each and every person who has supported him through his journey - both in monetary and physical terms. A heartwarming story straight from the heart. Couldn't put it down.
