The Darkest Ones

Rate this book
A bundle of Kitty Thomas’s darkest titles (contemporary dark standalones): Comfort Food (originally published in 2010, the OG dark romance novel), The Game Maker, and Big Sky.

Comfort Food:

HER:
The first day of my captivity was like being born… or dying. They’re both kind of the same thing with the long tunnel and the bright light at the end. Maybe it wasn’t like either, actually. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong because for me that day all there was, was darkness.
HIM:
Today I found something beautiful and decided to break it. I wanted to see it shatter in my hand and crumble at my feet. Her name is Emily Vargas. She’s bright and educated and stunning. Articulate. She’ll want someone to talk to her.

The Game Maker:

I was too isolated. I was about to be evicted. I made a final desperate call to the man who ruined my life, but he didn't come for me.

Someone else did.

And then there was Seven. When I first woke in the cell, I thought he was my captor, but he is a pawn, like me.

Seven is beautiful and kind. I want him so much I can barely breathe. He wants to protect me from our captor, but he can't.

We are both locked inside a game neither of us can ever hope to win, and even though it's wrong, I'm starting to want both men, not just the good one... the monster as well.

Big Sky:

Veronica Cason lives in a small apartment with no clear view of the sky. It’s uncertain which might crush her first: her debt or the buildings squeezed in so tight that they surround her like ominous sentinels. She can’t breathe in the city. Her success is a lie, and her debt is coming to collect her — unless someone else gets there first.
When a stranger offers her a job at a ranch, it feels like salvation, but it could also mean her death if his motives aren’t pure. Which door has the tiger behind it? The claustrophobia of the city or ranch life under an open sky?

Kitty Thomas has a delicious treat, one that i couldn’t resist.
A treat that includes her Darkest Ones, and i LOVE those!!
So,getting the ARC gave me the perfect excuse to re-read these delicious mindf**ks.
Because Kitty’s stories are all a treat you enjoy each time as much,if not more, than the one before.

When i was first introduced to Kitty Thomas, with Comfort Food,i hadn’t heard of Dark Romance.
But when i was finished,i had become, and still am,a véry big fan.
She takes you by the hand, and drags you through that Darkness, only to emerge into a Light that can only be described as KVOHEAWTHGWSN - Kitty's Version Of Happy Ever After Where The Heroine Gets What She Needs.

Comfort Food,Game Maker and Big Sky have something in common, apart from the fact that they’re dark.
They all have a heroine that’s alone in one way or another.
And that heroine is taken from everyday life to be molded into someone their captors are more than willing to keep.
Getting there is a journey that wíll hurt at times, but at least their captors enjoy it…..
The stage might differ, and the captors might all have their own reasons, and methods.
And the “victims” may all deal with their captivity in their own ways.
But they all end up where they need to be……

Do i have a favorite,you ask?
That’s a question i haven’t managed to answer in all this time, because every single one of Kitty’s stories has it’s own beauty,it’s unique storyline,it’s own wonderful people.
Ruthless men you can’t help, but love, even if they’re dark and depraved….and are more than happy to corrupt their “innocent” women.
And those “innocent” women end up enjoying that corruption…..loving it,even!

If you love to walk on the darker side of romance, this is the collection for you. It includes three of Kitty's darker and more depraved titles. Themes of captivity, ownership, kidnapping, and lack of consent are plentiful in these pages. Whether you enjoy a broken billionaire, a depraved farmer, or a dark menage, you'll find it in here. Dark psychological romance at its best!

In this book you get three of my absolute favorite dark stories from Kitty Thomas.

This book contains (check trigger warnings):
-BDSM
-Kidnap*****
-Some kind of Stockholm Syndrome
-Super steamy and kinky scenes
-Dark themes

From the story that started the now favorite book genre (dark romance) Comfort Food-you won’t look at chicken noodle soup the same way. To a bit darker story Big Sky (oh the breastfeeding part). To the ultimate harem with a major plot twist Game Maker. This is your book if you want it all and more….you’ll thank me later.

Comfort Food
I loved this book, it left me with one word reverberating in my head and that was ‘wow’. This story is encapsulated in one line (we get it at the end of the book) and that is what the entire story is from beginning to end. Although it is told from 1st person POV of Emily, it really isn't about her but about her captor. Even the few switches to 3rd person for the sexual scenes is all about him not her, just wow.......

The Game Maker
Is it or isn’t it? I love the twists, and less than apparent, story telling from this authour! The Game Maker has it all when it comes to half, or are they not, truths. Subterfuge or face value? Not just with the story, but also with our heroine’s feelings. Is what Kate feels real or a product of her circumstances? Was it ever real or just what was available? Either way, any way, we get a page turning story with scorching heat and wild times and I loved each and every second of it!

Big Sky
Oh my, that was an interesting read, but oh so nasty good!!! I loved this book, it was a true guilty pleasure to read Ronnie's downfall into a wickedness that she knew wasn't good but felt so right to her and those around her. This isn't for the easily squeamish, but then again, no Kitty Thomas book is, so if you don't understand the genre, you should stay away, but it you like to be drawn into some true nastiness, all in harmless fun of course, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book like I did!

Step on over into the shadows.

Let COMFORT FOOD nourish your depraved little soul. Or try your luck against THE GAME MAKER. Allow this dark world to sing sweet lullabies to you under a beautiful BIG SKY.

THE DARKEST ONES is a delightful collection of Kitty Thomas's darkest romances. Take her hand and follow her through the dark where captivity and depravity reign supreme.

COMFORT FOOD, considered to be the first novel to lay the foundation of the dark romance genre, introduces you to Emily and her silent captor. Follow her on her journey to discovering what freedom looks like for her.

THE GAME MAKER allows us to follow Kate as she is forced to play a dangerous game with her captor. But everyone knows you can't win a game you don't know the rules to. Or can you?

Kitty takes us away from the hustle of city life with BIG SKY. Veronica has been down on her luck. A change of scenery is exactly what the doctor ordered. But what if the scenery changes more than your luck? What if it makes you a completely different person?

Captive Romance at it’s finest!! Kitty Thomas knows how to embark on a dark adventure and keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. I read each of these books individually and they are all 5 star, fabulous, and deliciously dark reads. Comfort Food had me never looking at Cambell’s chicken noodle soup the same ever again, such a good book, one I reread often. Big Sky took me on a whirlwind of an emotional adventure, the first erotic book I had read where a woman was used for her breast milk who wasn’t pregnant, wonderful read! The Game Maker was like all that I had been craving but didn’t realize until I got it! Freaking awesome turn events that just had me screaming, another that I reread often! Highly recommended to all the people who love dark romance! Great collection of some of my favorite books.

this bundle is like my top 3 books EVER. if you like dark romance and haven’t read any of the titles in this, what are you doing?! i looove kitty’s dark stuff - it was comfort food that got me into the genre in the first place and now i pretty much exclusively read dark romance. the game maker is really high up there in my favourite books in general and regularly re-read, which says it all really if a book is that good even though you already know what it plays out. big sky is a deliciously dark read as well. these 3 have a big thumbs up from me!

Some of Kitty Thomas BEST work!! Comfort Food was my first Kitty book and introduced me to my new love, dark romance. It made me question things about myself. Big Sky made me instantly second guess my naïveté and whether or not I could trust my own choices. And The Game Maker. Now one of my all-time favorite books. This book is such a mind-altering roller coaster! *chef’s kiss*
The mind games, the give and take, living by the whims of someone else is true Kitty style. If you love darker, psychological romance this is a bundle that is NOT TO BE MISSED!!

Oh hey, my favorite writer has a new bundle! The Darkest Ones... hmm, let's try to guess what's in there.

Comfort Food, obvs. That book is brilliant and unforgettable and the darkest thing I've ever been thoroughly unable to put down. When I describe it in thumbnail terms to people, their eyes go wide, and they say, "That sounds appalling!" And I gleefully agree that YES, it DOES sound appalling, and the only reason it's not is the author's remarkable talent and skill. If anyone else in the world wrote this story, I'd probably want to yeet that version off a cliff. Kitty Thomas' deft touch and understanding of psychology and humanity make it compelling and powerful, where it could so easily be miserable and grotesque. Seriously, Comfort Food is darkness done right.

Next up has to be Big Sky, a perfect fit for a Darkest Ones collection. It's got a slight Vertigo touch, which is one of my favorite films. This is one of the most uncomfortable books I've ever read (in a good way), because the main character kind of sucks at life in mundane, plausible ways. She's got serious impulse control issues, she fails at taking care of herself, she screws herself over again and again until her life is a shambles... she's the worst-case scenario for the kinds of mistakes any of us can make when we're unhappy. Are we all a few bad decisions away from being Veronica? And wouldn't a wide-open-spaces, big-sky life be oddly comforting in comparison, no matter what circumstances led us there? Chills. (Bonus: Big Sky features a kink that was new to me--always wild to discover!)

Finally, I'm guessing the third book in this set is Perfection. Perfection is definitely my pick for next-darkest, and--

Wait a minute. It's not Perfection?

It's... The Game Maker?!? No... The Game Maker can't be that dark, because it's SO HOT. One of the sexiest books I have ever read cannot also be one of the darkest books by the queen of dark romance... right?

We learn so much about ourselves from great art. I read a lot of romance, dark and otherwise, and it is a bit sobering to realize that my darkness meter grades on a hotness curve. It's basically Barney Stinson's hot/crazy scale.

If the anti-hero is just too damn sexy to be angry at, the book *feels* less dark no matter what happens in it. When I read The Game Maker, I was basically envious of Kate. Sure, she's going through some stuff here, but honestly... it seems like a fair trade.

So enjoy The Darkest Ones! It's that box of chocolates where some bits are super-dark, 85% let's say, and then suddenly there's one with more milkfat and sugar, and you're like, Wow, it's still dark, but... so delicious.

Dark Suspense!

This box set is as advertised. It is three of the darkest tales by Kitty Thomas. They are all disturbing and compelling reads. They explore how far a person will go to survive. And are great reads.

COMFORT FOOD: Very intense captive/captor relationship!

What happens when a very knowledgeable, articulate self-help author and speaker is abducted. Then she undergoes the worst torture for her. He never speaks to her, EVER. She has a degree in psychology and understands that she is being conditioned to respond the way he wants. Even if it is presented as “her” choice. And after months when she is fully under his control he sets her free. She is left wondering why? Why take her? Why put in all that work to just let her go? And the biggest question, can she go on without him. Kitty Thomas has given us a look into our deepest fears and desires.

THE GAME MAKER: Intense captor/captive tale with a twist!

This is an interesting story of abduction and coercion of a young woman. Kate is about to be homeless. She goes to a bar to try to figure out what she can do. She wakes naked in a “cell” with a man, Seven. At first she thinks he is her captor but is shortly convinced that he is a captive like her. What ensues is totally unpredictable. A second man, Declan, is pulling the strings. Or is he? She comes to realize she likes the attention of both men. What follows are several weeks of manipulation and intimidation. This story is full of passion and lots of twists. Just when you think you know where it is going the author takes a quick turn. Kitty Thomas has crafted an excellent insight into how far the mind goes to protect us in extreme situations. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

BIG SKY: Intense captor/captive tale with a twist!

I did receive an advance copy for my honest review. But I also bought the box set for my own library.

Kitty Thomas is by far my favorite dark romance author. She writes very intriguing stories with very full characters and interesting plots. She takes you to places you don't want to go, but in the end, you love her for it. Her stories are twisted and go to places you weren't expecting. I forget how I stumbled upon Comfort Food the first time, but once I finished it, I had to know what else this person was writing. I've sense read everything she's written and I'm always looking for the next story.

Comfort Food is a truly amazing story that really twists in your head when you're done reading. I've read Comfort Food several times and it is always amazing. It is a very psychological story, how the author goes from first person to third person during the hardest times for the character.

The Game Maker is another great story by Kitty Thomas. With this story, you have a successful woman, but who is still struggling financially and is about to be evicted from her home. She doesn't really have any true friends to call to sleep on their couch. So, she calls her ex who should've stayed an ex. However, she doesn't end up with the horrible ex. She wakes up in a cell with the mattress and another man.

In Big Sky, this woman bumps into a man and is kinda rude to him. He decides that he is going to take her and teach her some manners. She's struggling, so it isn't exactly a bad thing for her. He takes her to his ranch in Montana (hence the name of the book). Through the story, we learn more about both of them.

Many of the characters are not good people, but they really are great in the story in which they are written. You might even learn something about yourself when you read these stories that will mess with your mind. These stories aren't for everyone, but if you like dark, psychological suspense stories that will keep you guessing, I recommend you give these a try. I will say that if you cannot handle hardcore BDSM, this is not the book for you. This is true sexual slavery without any consent, at least in a way, and no safeword. But, I think the characters end in a great place by the end of the stories, even if the road to it is a difficult one.

**Book was provided to me by the author. This review is my opinion and was not requested or provoked in any way by the author.

A book that got me hooked on dark romance way back when.

A book that pushed every button that needed to pushed and had me scrambling up theory after theory the entire ride.

And a book that makes me yearn for the comfort of the country.

3 books that are some of the darker books that Kitty has on offer. They all have something in common, in particular the ending. They make you question if the heroine’s truly made the best choice, or if they simply got comfortable with the tiger in their cage.

Comfort food
This is my, and likely many others, first dark romance. I’d gotten in a reading slump months before burnt out on the stuff I was reading when I discovered Amazon and the romance genre. And shortly after, Comfort Food. I was hooked since the first page. We follow an intelligent woman being taken and clearly conditioned by a man who doesn’t make a single noise. But even a woman as intelligent as Emily caves eventually. So what happens when her captor suddenly lets her free?

The game maker
This is a bit of a mindmelter. I will keep this description short out of respect for spoilers. Kate goes out on night but wakes up the next morning naked in a cell with a man named Sven. And a captor pulling the strings named Declan. Why was she taken, and will she ever be free again. Will she want to be?

Big sky
The more darker one in my opinion. We follow Ronnie as she laments about her concrete life in the city. Finding herself spiralling after raking up an immense amount of dead and having been evicted, a gorgeous cowboy offers her honest work on a ranch, away from the city. But before she can make a decision on that, it gets taken away from her and she finds herself taken by the rancher. Follow her inner war on what’s right and wrong.

In all honesty, these are dark psychological books, please read your trigger warnings, and if you’re ready? Dive in and get lost in the water.

I totally think it’s hard to rate which Kitty Thomas books are darkest, but I think this gives a good taste! Comfort Food was the first Kitty book I read, and just like that, I was hooked. It is definitely twisted and probably not everyone’s cup of tea, since the main character admits that what she and her captor have is not love, but obsession. The main character is kidnapped and forced to accept what her captor wants her to do, or remain in a cell with no stimulation whatsoever. She doesn't really have a choice, even though her captor enjoys giving her the illusion of one. This book has still stuck with me even after reading it a couple years ago.

The Game Maker has a sociopath who kidnaps the main character and puts her in a cell with another man, forcing them to choose between doing what he tells them, or starving.
I was definitely not expecting the twist to be what it was, even though I felt like I should have expected it! Kitty Thomas is so good at that!!

Big Sky is a whole other level of Kitty dark. Luke isn’t a sociopath, which actually makes him more scary. I definitely wouldn’t recommend reading Big Sky as anyone’s first Kitty Thomas book, but if you enjoy reading Comfort Food and The Game Maker, you will make it through this one! And probably have a lot to think about after the fact! You cannot deny how good of a writer this author is!

Kitty Thomas is one of the best dark romance authors out there, and this collection has her 3 darkest reads. They are non-con, abduction, captivity, at times violent reads, DARK, tales that have a sort of happy ending. Everyone is mostly happy at the end of each story, even if they are questioning their own sanity for feeling that way. The first book in the collection is Comfort Food. This is one of my all-time favorites and one of the first dark romances I ever read. It's not an easy story to read, and parts make me slightly uncomfortable even though I've read it multiple times, but I keep coming back to it. The second book is The Game Maker. It's just as dark and twisty as Comfort Food, and I found myself as conflicted as Kate while I was reading it. The last book is Big Sky. This one had me actually stepping away from it for an hour or so because it was so intense. I found myself having to pause and reread parts to make sure I read them right the first time. It's a story that makes you uncomfortable while arousing your imagination.

These stories are dark and delicious, and maybe not what a reader who is new to dark romance should dive into until they have more experience with the genre, but they definitely shouldn't be missed by fans. This is one I'll keep on my eReader at all times because I know I'll go back to it again and again.

Superbly excellent IMO. ALL 3 stories in this daaark boxset by Kitty Thomas.
A master at drawing a reader into a literary Alice in Wonderland headtrip, you'll be swirled away deep into the dark with these offerings. All of them smoothly mess with your mind & emotions, the suspense & twists & turns of the plots will easily engage your undivided attention & keep you on delicious tenterhooks.
What has happened? What will happen? Who will win or lose? What 'game' is being played & just exactly who is orchestrating it? To what purpose? And Ms. Thomas keeps the suspense, the scorching sizzle, the fascinating k!nk & surprises coming.
Wonderfully written, effortlessly evocative, beautifully detailed, the reader is able to perfectly picture surroundings, able to feel their emotions & perspective manipulated by the mesmerizing wordplay that is sheer perfection as far as this reader is concerned.
I've read & read these several times & each time I come to a new conclusion, discover a new take that makes each reread as fascinating as the first.
Every. Single. Time.
So tread carefully into these dark tales, for there be things within you never expect to find . . . .
And that, for this reader, is simply perfect.

Comfort Food- I found it slightly disturbing as I have never read a book regarding actual slavery. So many times I wanted to stop reading, but felt myself compelled to find out how it would end.
Great writing and at the time I didn't think this genre was for me, however this book has stayed with me since reading it 10 years ago and no one I have read has matched this author in this type of genre.

The Game Maker- This book takes me back to my favourite book to date by Kitty Thomas which is Comfort Food. The Game Maker made me feel the same way, uncomfortable but in the best way possible. How can you feel that way? How can you think that way? What are you doing? All questions I asked while reading this book, it was perfectly written, dark and just plain wonderfully Kitty Thomas. It kept me guessing the whole way through which is something I quite enjoy in a book and I didn't see the end coming at all. If you like dark and darker, games, intrigue and wondering what the heck is going on this is the book for you.

Fabulous stories all in one book!
~Comfort Food~
I love dark, twisted, and completely unexpected stories and Comfort Food was spectacular! In this bizarre and messed up relationship I was captivated from page one until the end!
~The Game Maker~
This story was so unique and different from anything I have read before.
The Game Maker had suspense, intrigue and sizzling hot scenes! It was twisted and very intense, with these characters hidden behind their masks and pretenses, I never would have guessed that ending!
~Big Sky~
Poor Veronica’s life is falling apart, she is smothered in debt, being evicted from her apartment, and now she has lost her job. Homeless, penniless, jobless and she meets Luke, a large strapping cowboy. The events that lead her going to his ranch and becoming his are terrifying but also thrilling and adventurous.

The Darkest Ones by Kitty Thomas. Fantastic collection including Comfort Food, The Game Maker, and Big Sky. Such an intriguing and complex mix of stories full of dark and at times disturbing drama. Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. For me, I loved it! Bring on the dark, disturbing, and depraved along with the thought-provoking content. I enjoy this author’s writing style and always look forward to more from her.

Love that Kitty Thomas put three of her darkest books together in one place! They are all addicting to read with amazing storylines! This one includes Comfort Food, The Game Maker, and Big Sky. Of course they are all signature Kitty books. With dark men and the women who get addicted to them. . . If you've been wanting to try Kitty Thomas out, then I recommend this box set, because of course it is the Darkest Ones she has to offer!

Wow, that was an amazing divi into the dark romance. At least first and second story. I loved the chemistry the building and the whole plot. Dark twisted, dominating and perfect.
I had problems with the third story-cowboys. I don’t have triggers so that was not the problem, what bothered me was that she was the substitute for the original girl. She was not it, and that bothered me. She was never the one and it showed through the plot.

This is such an epic boxset. Kitty at her darkest best. A little of this, a touch of that, and a wham bam at the end. If you’ve never read Kitty and her amazing words before, holy cow, jump on it and hold on! You’re in for the ride of your life! And you’ll never turn back, you’ll just read EVERYTHING else she wrote. Enjoy

The Darkest Ones definitely has some of Kitty Thomas' best books.

In Comfort Food Emily waked up to find herself blindfolded and tied to a chair. She doesn't know how or why she is there. Her captor isn't much help either seeing as he refuses to talk to her or answer any of her questions. (Not that he can). Emily was an up and coming author. She didn't think she was anything special and didn't come up with any reasons as to why someone would have taken her. At least none that were concrete.
By being kidnapped she learned what to do and not do around the person who took her. How to get food and how to get out of the room he held her in. All she wanted was to have him let her go... Until she didn't.

In the game maker Kate is getting evicted. She doesn't want to get back with her ex but it looks like that may be her only choice. As she goes outside to wait for him, too much alcohol causes her to pass out. She wakes up thinking that her ex took her to his house but finds out that is not the case at all. Instead she finds her self in a cell with another person. He apparently is also stuck in the same cell as her. A mysterious voice through the speaker in the cell wants them to do things with each other for his enjoyment. As the games get more difficult for her she realizes that the guy may not actually be there against his will like she originally thought.

Big Sky
I think this was my favorite of the three.
Veronica has lost her job and is just short of being homeless. If she doesn't figure out a job soon, she will be since she is living in hotels and her car. Prior to all this, Will overhears her talking to her coworker in a restaurant so he knows about her work problems. Because of this, he wants to help her... Anyway he can. This leads to her unwillingly going with him to his ranch but it also helps her. If the debt collectors don't know where she is, she doesn't have to worry about them, right? Will has some off jobs he wants her to do at us ranch. Some are mundane and others, not so much. Those are the ones she doesn't really care for but again, it is better than being homeless and in debt. She also realizes she will soon like the chores he has for her.

✔️Dark and Twisty
✔️Happy-ish Ending (depends on your take)

First off this book is not for those who don't like dark and twisty, for those who don't like non-consensual. Whatever your reason for picking this book, it was a good one. I related to her (and you're like why?)

I read it quite quickly for my doing. I enjoyed it a lot and kept me intrigued on every little page.

*please note that I do not condone this behaviour in reality. This is fantasy and should STAY fantasy.
