To save her people, she will doom herself. To save her, he’ll die. Finally back home, Meiling finds that returning to her old life as the cursed princess is harder than she imagined. She’s told to rest and recover from her harrowing time in the enemy’s fortress and enjoy the week-long festival.
She can’t. Not when Shang faces losing everything—including his life—because of her. She won’t rest until he is pardoned, but that is easier said than done in a world that still believes her cursed.
It doesn’t help that with each passing day, she cannot ignore the growing feelings in her heart for Shang. It’s impossible to think when he looks at her the way he does, with so much tortured intensity.
But with Shang’s trial, Meiling’s secret magic, and Fang Zedong making it clear he hasn’t forgotten them, dreams of a future with Shang become even more unrealistic. For anyone in the empire to be safe, someone must stop Zedong’s conquest.
Can that someone be the forgotten shadow princess of Zheninghai?

Shang & Meiling are my OTP. I love them. Their character arcs are just *chef’s kiss*
Do people say *chef’s kiss* anymore? Did they ever say it to begin with? Whatever.
Anyhow, a VERY satisfying conclusion to this series, full of growth, sacrifice, and love. Highly highly recommend to fantasy lovers who want a tender romance set against a magical backdrop with very high stakes.
Fantastic! I don’t think I’ve highlighted so many favourite quotes and moments before! What an epic conclusion to Meiling and Shang’s story! So many emotions! When I first saw the cover for this book I was ecstatic and the story itself totally lived up to the beauty of the cover. 😄
Only one more book to go in this series and I’m not ready for it to end! I love this world and the characters.
(I received a free eARC in exchange for my honest review)
Plot- Not much happened. I was bored and impatient for the FMC to finally be useful (never happened until the final scene). Dragged on and on. At least the final scene was great! The FMC finally makes a difference, shows some initiative, and helps out! It only took 3 books to get there!!!! 💀
Characters- I was super bugged by the weak FMC who didn’t use her wits or her unique magic to aid her people. If her magic is so powerful that her parents worried that she’d be enslaved in the service to the kingdom, then why the heck is she gazing at the stars while she sleeps?! Do something useful, girl! She was constantly a victim. She was shy, timid and anxious right up until the end, and it got SO OLD. She was basically the polar opposite of a leader- unproductive and purposeless. WHERE WAS HER CHARACTER GROWTH?! By the time we see it in the final battle scene, it was too late to make up for three books of being a ninny.
The MMC was awesome but it didn’t salvage the book. Why did he like her again?
Romance- Nope. With such an unassertive FMC who doesn’t even have the confidence to flirt, the chemistry was low.
Content-
Language- none Spice- a chaste kiss Substance abuse- none Violence- low level violence; battles etc Cover- great! POV- dual POV if I remember correctly Cliffhanger- no Format- free audiobook via author’s link to YouTube Narration- good
How I rated the series- #1) Guardian of Talons and Snares - 4 stars #2) Warrior of Blade and Dusk - 4 stars *end of duology, beginning of trilogy* #3) Princess of Shadows and Starlight - 3 stars #4) Captive of Twilight and Treachery - 1.5 stars #5) Daughter of Darkness and Dreams - 1.5 stars
Wooow this was perfect!! I couldn’t have asked for a better finale to Meiling’s books in this series. 😍😍😍 It was tense, suspenseful, emotional, beautiful, addicting, sweet, funny, and just AMAZING!! Anastasis is such a talented writer and became an auto-buy author for me from the very first book of hers I read!
I love Meiling’s character arc throughout her 3 books. You really see her grow and become her own person, and I am so there for it!! Her personality is a lot like mine where I can’t stand seeing others hurt or upset, plus I’m shy like her, so I related a lot. Shang’s character was great as well, and is it just me or did he get swoonier with each book?? 😍 I only wished we got some resolution with his dad, but there was so much else going on so I understand why we didn’t. You could feel Shang and Meiling’s love and devotion towards each other and man it made my heart swell with happiness at times, and at other times ache with grief. 😭❤️
The magic in this world is so cool and not only did we get to see Meiling’s reach its full potential, but see what the darker side of magic could do and how devastating it was. The constant struggle and battle with Zedong was so suspenseful, but I’m very satisfied with the ending.
The romance was clean and so so beautiful and perfect. I might’ve swooned a time or two 😍
I could go on for hours, so I’ll end this review with this: READ THE ZHENINGHAI SERIES RIGHT NOW!!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! 🤩🤩🤩
The conclusion to Meiling and Shang's story was so sweet. It was satisfying and was very beautifully written. It was amazing to see how much each of the characters had grown since the first book, and I can't wait to read more about Feiyan in the future😊
AMAZING. Seriously, every book of Anastasis' blows me away and has me happy crying by the end of it. I dread the day when I realize there will never be a new Anastasis Blythe book to read again. This book had an extreme amount of pressure on it from the intense slow burn build up of the previous books. And it was just amazing, like I've said. I was riveted from page one, and I read it in two sittings over one day, (and that was only because I had to work! lol!) I loved it. I loved it. I. Loved. It. I loved it all! The romance? Top tier, will make you laugh, cry, sob, and will make you believe in love again. The action? Terrifying and immersing. You will not be able to look away. Plot? SO SATISFYING. 10/10 would read again. I love Meiling so much, as well as all the other characters. But Meiling! My sweet friend. That's what she is. I want to hug her. Her and everyone else. (Also- the cameos! They were soooo fun! I loved getting to see some other MCs from this series too!) The only thing this book lacked was pandas. But that's a forgivable offense. for now. JK LOL
This was an entertaining series; sometimes the characters’ internal angst got a bit much for me but the fantasy world was fun and the story arc kept me going. A nice diversion after I tore my Achilles tendon and wanted some escapism! I’d probably hover between 2.5 and 3.5 stars depending on the book.
Ugh!! I absolutely love this series and am sad it’s over! What a beautiful story to wrap up the whole series! I highly recommend this one and just absolutely devoured these! Definitely will have more of a review to come!
I stayed up way too late to finish Daughter, and it was totally worth it. Everything was tied up so beautifully in the end, and now I want to start the series over! ❤️
Meiling is one of my favorite heroines! She grew so much in this book! No spoilers but reading her shutting down so naysayers was so satisfying!
Shang was still the best! And there was so many sweet, swoony moments!
Also Kai showed up a little bit, and he is still snarky as ever. 😂
As always Anastasis Blythe’s writing was flawless, and I loved every moment of it. I will try to wait patiently for the healer’s story!
Content: clean, some violence but nothing too descriptive, nothing more than kisses, no swearing
How to begin to describe how disappointed I am in this series? Let me start by saying I have absolutely no issue with weak female leads, but this isn't the way to write them. The very first glaring problem I found on this was the characterization of her women. I found the same issue while I read her previous duology in this series. But here it became even worse. At times, it felt like Meiling was doing whatever came to mind and expecting to work because she's the protagonist. Which ultimately resulted in her just doing the most unintelligent thing possible, just to have her be saved by Shang. She had moments of good thinking and actually doing something that helped moved the plot forward, sadly those were sparks in my opinion, and she just fell short of any sort of true learning of her own faults. Without giving too much away, she throws herself into danger with no thought whatsoever about her chances of winning, and almost kills herself. After she's brought back from the brink of oblivion, she actually ponders about doing it again. Tied to this is the fact that she completely disregards the people she so cares for. Examples of this can be found in her incessant violation of Shang's mind, Meiling always has an excuse to stay beyond her welcome or just simply intrude in his privacy, because she has to know his feelings. Another instance of her disregard for anyone's feelings is that she continuously pulls herself in the most ridiculous danger, knowing full well Feiyan was the one picking the short end of the stick. Let's not even begun on how she even lacked any sort of knowledge in both magical and human topics. This, despite the affirmation that she did spend most of her time reading. She never learned what type of magic user she was. She is a totally clueless person, lacking the most basic information even about her own empire and its rules. Something a princess has no knowledge, apparently.
The second issue is that the distribution of the story is messy. Book 2 begins and ends in the same place. This was the perfect opportunity to actually make Meiling hit rock bottom and actually start to change and evolve as a person. Instead, we got a repeated loop of her just doing anything, failing and thinking that life is terrible, rinse and repeat. Never did she grow as a person. In book three she out of nowhere (for the gazillion time) had an epiphany and this time she just became everything she should in an instant. To summarize, book 2 was spent in bouts of woo is me and pity parties. Onto book 3 where we landed in the impending invasion of Zheninghai. This was the plot point I expected to take the majority of the book, but no. Instead, we were hung up on this never ending trial that we didn't even fully see, and the war was a background thing reserved for the moment the characters were tired of kissing each other. Make no mistake here, I read this author for the romance but time and place people. It was too much silly secret dates, when the empire was nearing its impeding obliteration. The most interesting part of the book was the war and that was thrown to the back, and instead we got tons of misplaced romance (God I love Shang like crazy, but we need to save the empire for god’s sake). And a trial that wasn't even the focal point, but was everything the characters seemed able to think about. Again, how to stress that Meiling had no idea how her own empire was politically structured, and somehow this was a key point in the book. I say this with respect, but the author needs to work more on her characters evolution and the plot structure for it to work. I'm still excited about the last story, so hopefully she can change for the better.
I have no idea where to start with this review other than to say this book series (and this last book OF that series) has profoundly impacted my life. It's shown me how to be brave, have hope, resist evil, and fight for all that's good and lovely. It's made me laugh, cry, swoon (especially this one), and have hope in the world again. Every book is better than the last in terms of revelations, character growth, and writing style. Note: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review—all thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This one definitely does not disappoint; it presents a satisfying conclusion to a tense series with plenty of Meiling/Shang scenes. Seriously, these two might be even more lovestruck than Kai and Aranya. I definitely swooned and squealed like a little kid with almost every scene where they were together. Both of them grow a lot in this book, and I LOVE seeing Shang's POV. There's a lot about him that we just don't know until this book, especially with his struggles of perfectionism. This book definitely gives you all the feels concerning these two. (Also, many of their fluffy scenes sorta mimic those found in Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses, which I found to be absolutely adorable and chuckle-worthy. Like mother, like daughter.)
On the plot side, I will say this book is harder to put down simply because everything is so tense. Shang and Fen's trial plus the threat of an invasion combine into a snowball of tough decisions and heartbreaking moments. But even though it was hard and stressful, I loved seeing how Meiling and Shang reacted. They were loyal to their country and their people through everything, and they refused to go down without a fight. Even though they wanted nothing more than to spend their time together (and they did at points), they also found ways to help their country.
And that is I think one of the main themes of this book: sacrifice made in love. Not necessarily giving up your life, although that can be important, but rather spending your life fighting against injustice and for the happiness of those around you, even if you can't be a part of that happiness. Shang and Meiling were brutally honest in their thoughts when in came to what they wanted to do versus what must be done. But they were rewarded in the end for their dedication.
All in all, this is an adorably romantic book that will leave you on the edge of your seat, dying to know how it ends. It's about courage and love, and finding your strength when you thought you had none. It's about making hard decisions and enjoying the freedom you're given. I wouldn't change a single thing about this book.
Thank you yet again, Ms. Blythe, for another amazing book. I know I'll treasure it for years to come.
The final in the series for Meiling and Shangdi, this story is beautiful and touching, full of fantasy, thrills, and of course swoony and clean romance. As with all of the stories I’ve read by Anastasis, she crafts a stunning world with beautiful descriptions and novel elements to make it feel unique and powerful. I love the Eastern influence in the world, and all the different types of fantasy creatures that make their appearance.
Of course, some of the best parts of the story revolve around the cast. Whether it’s the connections or character development, Anastasis did a remarkable job at capturing my interest. We gain clear and descriptive insights into motivations, thoughts, feelings, while showing the complexity of our role in the world. For example, a magical power for one may be a blessing, but to others may be viewed as a curse. Or helping a character to end their violence through a non-violent discussion.
My truly favorite part of the book is the romance. I absolutely adore the descriptions and feelings put into the characters, and they shine. They are written so beautifully and powerfully that it brings those emotions to the reader. The romance is clean, happy, and never ending, exactly how I think it should be. I also like seeing romance from more than one pair as well, such as the deep connection between a certain married couple, the tie-ins from another book, or perhaps the hints of a future romance as well from another pair.
Overall, Daughter of Darkness and Dreams is a fantastic book. I truly loved reading it, and even though Meiling’s and Shang’s story has been wrapped up, I’m glad to know we will see future stories in this universe. With the well crafted fantasy world, the powerful character development, the thrilling plot, and the immense amount of swoony love, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Where do I start? This book was fantastic!! The author said this one was the series climax and she totally delivered!! It was So good!! Like, you're both going to want to savor it/pace yourself and inhale it in one sitting, so good luck if you choose the first one, and clear your schedule if you're going for the latter.
There are so many things I loved in this book! Meiling's growth/standing up for herself and others, the different kinds of love going around (not only romantic, though there's plenty of that one, but also in friendships and family), the upping the stakes and what it means for the story (more conflict, higher stakes, plenty of hold your breath moments), the action (it's always so much fun seeing all the magic wielders in action!), Oh, and the cameos! (I loved Master Dong's convo with Delan, and it's always such a treat seeing what Shi Kai is up to, as well as his relationship with Aranya). Seriously, there are so many things to love here, and I could definitely go on and on, but I'll just add a bit more on the "romantic love" comment, because guys, a flirty, talkative, swoony Shang is totally worth the wait 😍 (there are a couple of chapters that are *chef's kiss* in this regard, and will have you moving him up in the swoon hero list *dreamy sigh*).
Brace yourself for the gamut of emotions in this roller coaster ride, because you'll definitely laugh, swoon, and even cry or tear up in a certain scene. Anastasis Blythe has definitely knocked it out of the park with this one. It's definitely a worthy addition to the Zheninghai Chronicles, and I'm not sure I'm ready for this series to be over, but I'll definitely be looking forward to the next (and final) book in this series. ~ 5+ (whispering) stars! 😉
The Zheninghai Chronicles have been an engrossing and thrilling series that completely caught me off guard. And while I've enjoyed them right from the start, the Meiling trilogy is NEXT LEVEL. I've heard the Chronicles described as "Mulan goes to Hogwarts" which is 100% true, but I'll add "Mulan goes to Hogwarts through the lens of Disney's 'Inside Out'." And we're not just talking some new spin-off of an already spun tale. These books are uniquely enchanting and leave me counting down to the author's next work of art.
For the Meiling trilogy, in particular, I've been absolutely captivated by Blythe's creativity and ability to take us right into the minds of her characters- truly I haven't put so much thought (or laughter) into the workings of the human brain since 'Inside Out’ debuted. Outside of the characters’ minds I still found myself out of breath with the engrossing descriptions of each scene, each battle. The first battle within Zedong's fortress, in particular left me feeling as if I'd been flung around by warriors, smashed into walls and burned by phoenix fire. Speaking of that epic battle... the thing about Blythe is, you never know what little trick she has up her sleeve. And as devastating as some of the curve balls and cliff hangers can be, I find myself thinking "she's done it again! And I was a fool to not see it coming," and my respect for the story only deepens as I delve in further, trusting Blythe to take me safely to the end.
Overall, and once again, Blythe's perfect balance of plot and character development, fantasy and romance, pulled me right in and refused to release me until the very last page. Though let's be honest, my heart is still racing from that final battle. ;)
Aaaah! I stayed up so late finishing this book because the last few chapters were completely unputdownable. If I didn't have responsibilities I would have read this whole book in one sitting.
This book was so satisfying with so many character arcs, redemptions, romance, familial love, found family.
Meiling's growth and strength in this book was so moving. She really found her voice and her confidence, she became the person she was meant to be, and it was so incredibly satisfying. And she did it with the help of the ones who understood her, who knew her darkest secrets and loved her anyway.
Zedong's arc was pretty sad, especially having read the prequel when he was a good friend to Liena and seeing where dark magic had taken him. He was a really great villain, and seeing how that played out with all the mo gui and brigands under his command. Seeing all our favourite characters, especially Nianzu, in battle action was super thrilling. I loved that Delan and Kai were there. It was like a Marvel movie where they all had their own story but then all join forces in the finale. Epic.
I could go on and on about this book, it was by far my favourite in the series.
Shang and Meiling are back at the palace, but Shang is standing trial for his life at something strikingly similar to a court-martial, and Meiling can’t shake the feeling that something is following her and slithering up her spine. As Shang and Meiling find the courage to speak their feelings for each other out loud, the forces of evil are growing inside the capital city. Meiling discovers that there are more ways than one that her magic can be used to destroy her family and everything she holds dear. Shang discovers that his one hope is to flee from execution, but is a life of exile worth living is Meiling will not go with him?
I love the cover for this one. One of my favorite side characters is the Emperor (“Pa”) with his devoted care for his daughter. The showdown between Meiling and Fang Zedong at the end of the book (predicted by Liena long, long ago in the prequel novel) can truly be classified as “epic.” Shang is simply marvellous throughout (both as a warrior and a man in love), but it is the weakest character who finally summons the courage to conquer the darkest evil because of her love for those around her.
I have officially read every book that Anastasis Blythe has published…and I am really sad about that. I love everything she has written, but ‘The Zheninghai Chronicles’ is definitely my favorite. Usually with a series there is a book that I didn’t like in it, but that is not the case with this series. All the books were fantastic, but if I had to choose my favorites, it would be ‘Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses’ and ‘Daughter of Darkness and Dreams’.
This series is beautifully written with vivid descriptions that made it so easy to completely lose myself in this story. The characters were well developed and I had no trouble connecting with them and rooting for them to succeed. You’ll definitely love this series if you love fantasy full of swoony romance, found family, political intrigue, magic, and non-stop adventure. Once you pick this series up, you won’t want to put it down again. I will definitely be reading ‘The Zheninghai Chronicles’ over and over!
This final chapter in Meiling and Shang's story could not have been better. Meiling truly comes into her own as a force to be reckoned with. There are an increased number of chapters from Shang's point of view, cameos from characters from earlier in the series and so very many swoony (but still clean) moments all put together with flawless writing that draws you into the story and utterly refuses to let you go.
After all the hardships these characters have faced, the ending is thoroughly satisfying with everyone getting the ending they deserve. The plot threads from all of the previous books are tied up nicely while leaving plenty of scope for more adventures in the world to come (I know the author plans just one more book switching to Feiyan as the main character, but at some point in the future little sister Hou has to find some trouble of her own).
I have been reading through this series and I have yet to see a less-than-amazing book.
One of my favorite parts of this author's stories is the clean content. They have just enough tension to keep you desperate for more, while also giving a fresh feel of clean content.
The characters made me love the story. The way the two leads supported and cared for each other through out all the trouble made me wish the book could have been longer. Even the side characters improved the story, each with their own personality and struggles.
The plot was also well-structured and had a good paced. The constant danger of the plot mixed with the relationship tension made it impossible to put down.
I love the world building as well. The author has created an intricate and real-feeling world that makes me wish I could see more of it.
Swoon. I love Shang and Meiling that much more. This was the perfect ending to their story.
This book is full of heartfelt moments, hard decisions, and heartstopping action. I was at the edge of my seat more than once. I wanted to cry for the characters and fix their situation. I absolutely loved the relationships between all of the characters, including Shang and Meiling, which continued to grow and develop. If you want a slow burn romance with sass and laughter but also on the edge of your seat action, then this series is for you!
I loved each book more as they were released. Anastasis does an amazing job with detailed world building, deep personal relationships, and nail-biting action. I can't wait to see where she goes next with her writing.
This series has meant a lot to me.. I was excited and nostalgic to say the least as this book was completed. It was nothing short of simply EPIC! No spoilers as usual but be ready for an adventure that will end in smiles and wonder! Meiling and Shang were a formidable duo... the back and forth and the love was what made it so hard to say goodbye to them... Anastasis, are you really sure that you want to end the series now?? ( we are available for more installations! g But on a different note, this is one of the best in the series so far... cause I still love my Book 1 haha.. a lovely end to an awesome storyline. I 💯recommend!!!
This review is for Princess of Shadows and Starlight, Captive of Twilight and Treachery, and Daughter of Darkness and Dreams. These are the last three books in the Zheninghai Chronicles by Anastasis Blythe.
Out of the three storylines in the series, this one may be my favorite. Princess Meiling and Shang shine together as they fight their way through wilderness, stifling captivity, and war.
Princess Meiling is a sweet character with a secret that could cost lives. She has a quiet, feminine strength. She doesn’t need to be able to wield a sword to win a battle. Shang is quiet and serious and begrudging of his new duties. Through it all, he is honorable. Both characters have incredible growth through these three books. Their romance was absolutely precious.
The villain in this story is an interesting one. His backstory starts in Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses. He is honestly repulsive. Blythe did an amazing job of making such an in-depth villain. He gets worse every appearance he makes.
The storyline was well thought out and intricate. And the plot twists. One word. Whiplash. I don’t think my poor heart could have taken much more. There were places I became emotional and teary-eyed. Not to worry, though. All loose ends were neatly tied off. The ending was everything I could have hoped for.
Please tell me that Feiyan will get her own story! I am rooting for her.
I was a little disappointed in this book, but I still loved it. I wish that the growth the FMC had in the first and second books would have been explored and used sooner in this book. She seemed to shrink all the way back, and that was hard to read. The never-ending "curses" kind of got old. It happened often, and yet they didn't really figure it out until the battle. Like I said, I was disappointed and yet loved it. *This book is rated PG. There is no swearing or spice. There are a dozen mild kisses. There is a lot of violence, but not as much as the other books.
I literally devoured this series in a week! First off, so appreciate the lack of language and spicy scenes of any kind…just goes to show you can write amazing stories that completely draw you in, without those things! But wow, loved how the books were 3 different stories, but they all came together in the end. It had me so captivated I could not put it down. I was in the edge of my seat the entire time…phenomenal!
Loved it. I loved it. I was dyyyyying near the end. Literally told my daughter that I may need to buy the physical copy so I could take a video while I burned it and post that. However, thankfully, that became unnecessary. 😇 I am happy with how everything resolved. I really loved the FMC and the MMC and enjoyed this series so much! No swearing, no spice - just kisses. Lots of fighting and violence.
good! what a lovely conclusion to the main plotline and romance arcs! I expected something alone these lines but enjoyed the ride!
although i’m seeing there will apparently be more books in the series still? i’m wondering if it’s new characters and a continuation in the universe with a new plot? idk. we’ll see if i read bc i think this had a nice ending and am pleased to end there and by the time new books come out, i may be on to other things. who can say! we shall see!
foooooour stars??? ((okay ngl i need to like reread this again LOL and like. maybe tag as i read))))
so tbh i still think shang falls a little head over heels for mei like a little too fast lol like idk when we moved to "darling" BUT whatever we love a guy who stans our girl this much
i really love mei... 🥹 it was an absolutely joy watching her grow to what she is now 🥹 so many times i wished i could just help lift up her spirits again (so thanks shang!!!!) 🥹 this is very much a "wallflower blooms" sort of story...
i think my rating comes from mostly this book feeling a bit Long lol (a lot of very dense scenes... not a bad thing but imo there's a lot of intensity in them)... looking back at my reading progress, i can definitely see where i thought things started to pick up 😂 that all said, many moments of squee were had over shang being In Love with mei, mei standing up for herself!!!!, people seeing mei for all the goodness she is 😩...
overall mei is just really one of my favorite book characters ever, i think... 🥹 i think i just find it so easy to relate to her + a lot of those moments of turmoil she had i felt really resonated with me 😅 i have really loved watching her grow and i'm glad she got the happy ending she deserves 🥹
What a fantastic and beautiful ending to Shang and Meiling’s sweet story full of love and growth and sacrifice and more!! Truly this was such an epic conclusion and they are my favourite couple in this series! Plus the cover is just stunning!
There is another book left, and I just can’t wait for that book!! But I hope we aren’t done with this world yet as there is so much more that is left !
