Pet Play by the Lake

Prancing With Daddy

Rate this book
Can a younger Daddy filled with sunshine encourage a grouchy boy to let his inner pony fly free?

A year has passed since the annual Pet Play by the Lake LGBTQ charity event in Tahoe. It’s time for another exciting weekend as pets from around the world arrive in search of a new Master or to show off their skills with their dream Daddy. As always, the no-nonsense Shane is tasked with overseeing the festivities.

Cody has dreamed of attending the pet play event for years. However, his duties as a ranch owner in Montana make it difficult to take time off for himself. One of his side hustles is making leather harnesses, collars and leashes for the kink community. What better excuse to attend than by renting a booth for the long weekend?

Once Cody spots the stern, older Shane, he recognizes in him a boy who needs to let go, to prance and romp. He also hopes Shane will give himself over to a firm, but loving handler. Cody would happily apply for the job, but his advances are consistently rebuffed.

Will Shane’s scars from a humiliating relationship prevent him from finding the happiness he secretly craves with the carefree Cody? And will a long-distance relationship prove impossible for them to sustain?

2.5 Stars — Pony Play

Shame on me for thinking that I would be awash in tails, bridles, and saddles. Silly me thinking that I would see a circus pony prance around with huge feathers on its head.

I got one brief and abrupt pony sex scene. Lame. And I had no dazzle dazzle at all.

I was giving this the benefit of my doubt until the abrupt ending which left plot leads dangling.

Shane hated being touched, yet Cody kept touching him. "Shane shrank away from Cody's touch." In that same interaction, Cody then tapped Shane's nose, which is not something you can do to anyone you don't know (and many people you do know), but especially not to someone who hates being touched.

Aside from that, Shane was in charge of the event, yet Cody kept thinking things like "his manner screamed that he was playing at being tough and in charge", which is really insulting to Shane's competence. Cody also concluded from this that Shane was a sub. The Doms and Daddies around Shane kept interfering with his job like they had any right to, and all of it implied that submissive people can't be good at management or other jobs where they have to be in charge, and that dominant people always know better and have some kind of right to interfere.

Cody clearly doesn't understand that no means no. This wasn't someone pursuing a reluctantly interested person, but someone continuing to harrass someone who rejected him.

I stopped reading before it could get any worse.

Pet play by the lake is back! :)
Get ready for some fun, love and a lot of kink!
I quite like the series and stories I have read so far, including this one. Shane has been hurt in the past, making him afraid to participate in pet play ever since. Instead he has become a no nonsense organizer and that clipboard of his is no joke! Cody is a sweet, caring Daddy who really wants a pony of his own. Luckily for him, he meets Shane, who turn out to be perfect for him.
While I liked the quick pace and cute interactions, considering Shane's issues, I didn't feel like this went deep enough to resolve them. I am happy he found his HAE, but it was a whirlwind romance at its finest, including the part where he changes his whole life for love. I get it, but I think relationship requires compromise and I didn't see Cody giving up anything, while Shane did. Aside from that, it was cute, a bit of an insta-love and full of kink!

**I was provided an ARC of this book from the GRR for an honest review**

This was just an okay read for me. I was expecting a little more on the spice end of things. However, I did appreciate the communication between the characters. I loved the age gap between the characters.

Prancing With Daddy is part of the ‘Pet Play By the Lake’ collection. This stars Cody, a young Daddy Dom, and Shane, an older sub. This is told in third person from Shane and Cody’s povs.

Even though this book is part of a collection, the characters in it are ones that have appeared in other stories by this author. Lee and Ash return, as does another sub.

The blurb does a good job of describing the plot so I won’t go into it much. Shane is an event planner at the BDSM club run by Lee. I remember reading about Shane before. He’s closed off and needs everything to be perfect. It’s clear he has a problem relating to people but no one knows why, not even Lee, the owner who helped Shane and would understand what happened to Shane. Cody is a young Daddy Dom who’s come to the club to sell his leatherwork, look for a pet to spend the weekend with, and hopefully a relationship with. This is a fast-paced plot. It’s barely over a hundred pages and had to cover introducing the characters, revealing Shane’s past, pony-play, sex, and HEA.

Usually, it seems to me, the author does a decent job describing the BDSM world and its rules. I don’t know what happened in this book, but Cody failed as a Dom in many respects. He knew Shane didn’t like to be touched, yet the author had Cody touching Shane without Shane’s permission and in one instance, popping him on the nose with Cody’s finger. The excuse is that it helps break down Shane’s expectations and will open him up to seeing Cody as a possible Daddy or play partner. I don’t know why the author wrote Cody as doing inappropriate behavior when it’s known in BDSM not to do anything that isn’t okayed by the other person. Cody should have asked for permission to touch Shane, instead he invaded his space. Passing the action off as okay because Shane didn’t object, reminds me of gaslighting the readers instead of giving correct BDSM protocol. Later in the story when Shane was evasive, Cody didn’t like it and thought ordinarily he’d be more forceful and make the sub talk, but since Shane had trauma, he wouldn’t this time. That tells me Cody is not normally a calm, gentle Dom like he currently was behaving with Shane. What happens when Cody reveals this other side of himself? Shane will feel betrayed again. I don’t understand why the author wrote Cody as inconsistent and as breaking BDSM rules. I didn’t care for Cody.

I felt sorry for Shane, he had a traumatic past and I could understand why he didn’t trust anyone. I did think the resolution of his issues happened way to fast, especially revealing the trauma to Cody who he barely knew. That seemed unrealistic. If there was anyone Shane should have trusted with that information it should have been Lee. The author did do a good job of writing Shane as walled off and slowing turning into a more open person, even though a lot of that action happened off page.

Important scenes were left unresolved as to pony play, instead focusing on the sex and not how the Daddy Dom and pony sub relationship worked. Also in the epilogue, Shane and Cody are back at the club for the Pet Play Event the following year, only as a couple. The author teased readers by saying that Shane would be in the pet contest, but we never get to see Starshine perform. Too many scenes felt rushed and unfulfilled. We don’t even find out what Shane does job-wise after he moves in with Cody. Too much is left unsaid.

Overall, I don’t think Prancing With Daddy is one of this author’s better stories. Too much happened with a lot of unresolved vital information, and Shane’s deep problems were solved too quickly in too short a book. I liked Shane, but not Cody. Cody didn’t behave in an appropriate manner for a Daddy Dom towards a person he didn’t know when he first met Shane, and Cody came across as inconsistent. This is an okay fast read if you’re looking to pass the time, but I’d probably recommend one of the author’s other books first. I give this book 3 Stars.

DNF @ 81%.

I know I should just go ahead and finish it since I'm so close, but if I do that, I'll have to rate it. I don't rate my DNF books unless they're really offensive.

I tried.

When I first met Shane, I wasn't impressed. There's being a super busy person and just doing the job, and then there's Shane, who made a point in telling everybody how busy he was.

Okay, dude. We get it. You're busy. You know how we know? Because you told everybody over and over.

I liked Cody right off, and still liked him when I stopped reading the book.

There's an age gap - Shane is 42, and Cody is 28 - a big plus for me.

It's opposites attract, another plus.

I love Daddy kink books where the Daddy is younger than the boy (or in Shane's case, ponyboy). One of my all-time favorite Daddy/boy books has a much younger Daddy, Firm Hand, so it's something I seek out when I'm looking for this type of book.

Unfortunatelty, the power exchange between Shane and Cody just didn't work for me. They didn't click as a couple, and I really didn't feel the Daddy/ponyboy part either.

Shane spends so much time in the book thinking about why the relationship won't work that I found myself agreeing with him early on.

Also, another thing that bugged me....

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about everybody (regardless of gender) showing their feelings, but Shane cried A LOT, even when it didn't fit that particular part of the story. It just seemed... off, especially the first time it happened in the book. Usually when a character shows their emotions in a book, I have sympathy. With Shane, I was thinking how out of character (and not just because he was trying to hide his true self) it was, especially in those particular instances.

Then we get to Starshine, Shane's pony.

I won't say the story's bad. It's actually written rather well. I just couldn't bring myself to like Shane, or the thought of him and Cody being a couple. The relationship just fell flat to me. I felt like I was being told and not shown a lot.

I volunteered to review this title because I admit I was curious about this kind of pet play. I’m not sure I understand it better now but I don’t know if it’s on me or the author. I guess it’s easier if you’re already familiar with this theme.

The first 50% of the book is about Shane being still so hurt by his past that he doesn’t want to let Cody which kind of make the first part sad and unbalance the rest of their story.

I didn’t hate it but I think it would have been better if it was longer. For example I’d have loved to see more of:
-Shane’s life. He talks about his friends at the end but we know nothing about them so it feels empty. Same for the guys who work at the ranch, it would have been nice to have scenes with them because here they were just names on the page. In a longer book we could have had a sense of who they were
-Their int*mate time together. I felt like it jumped from their first time to their big “scene”,skipping everything in between.
- What their life becomes at the end. *SPOILER* Shane moves out to join Cody but we don’t see how he handled it job wise. He’s a hairstylist so how does it work for him in Cody’s secluded place?
- A discussion about their preferences would have been great before their first time, especially considering Shane’s troubled past.
- And what happens in the epilogue? How does the show go for Shane??

I loved that Cody was very patient with Shane and understanding and that he always let him choose when it came to the big decisions.
I don’t think this book was for me but you might like it if you love this kind of theme, which I don’t see a lot of online.

Thanks to the author for the free copy.

While I've usually enjoyed books by this author, I found myself rather disappointed in this one.
The premise of the story is that Shane has retreated from his pony side due to a cruel former Dom and he's convinced himself that he's too old and damaged to try again. Cody is a younger Dom, who comes to the Pet Play event as a vendor of handcrafted leather goods and hoping to find his own ponyboy. Cody is instantly intrigued by the serious older man and soon starts to peel away the insecurities that Shane has built up. Although I was really interested in the younger Dom/older Sub dynamic, and really wanted to get into the pony play kink, I was disappointed that the author barely had any of the actual pony play and the story was more about Shane constantly doubting himself, talking himself down and trying to resist Cody. I liked the character of Cody. He definitely came across as a caring Daddy Dom, despite being the younger of the two. Towards the end of the book, the author teased us with a glimpse of what Cody could offer Shane as his pony - but we barely got a short scene and that was it. We didn't even get to read about how Shane did the following year as a participant in the Pet Play event, rather than an organizer! I wanted to see Starshine in action and we didn't! Add in that there were several editing errors that should have been easily fixed, and I just couldn't get invested in the story at all. I know that these multi author collaborations tend to be shorter books, but I couldn't help but feel like the author just didn't put in the same amount of time and effort and personal commitment to this as their other works. It just didn't resonate with me on any level.

Code (28 ans) et Shane (42 ans)

Daddy et boy (poney - Starshine)

📖
Un jeune papa plein de soleil peut-il encourager un garçon grincheux à laisser son poney intérieur voler librement ?

Un an s'est écoulé depuis l'événement caritatif annuel Pet Play by the Lake LGBTQ à Tahoe.

I was excited to see another Pet Play book by Morticia Knight. This one was quite short which is perfect for a shot of sweet goodness in my life.

I am kicking myself for not reading Pretty Puppy first, even though it is right there on my kindle and I really should know better. The story still made perfect sense so you can read it as a standalone but I think it would be just that bit extra special if I'd already met some of the workers (and Shane) before.

The only thing that bothered me was the fact that people kept touching Shane when he didn't want them to. I thought that kink communities would be especially aware of consent and take that seriously. I got the impression that Shane was neurodivergent but that wasn't mentioned, so I might have misinterpreted that.

Talking of...

I instantly loved Shane. He was really competent and capable of taking charge but it's obvious that he didn't necessarily want to be in charge like that - he did it because he took it on as a duty but didn't enjoy it. That boy worked so hard to make things better for everyone and he took on so much responsibility - I really wanted a Daddy to come along and give him the care he needed.

Enter Cody. The dynamic of a younger Daddy wasn't explored as much as I assumed it would be but really this was a story about Shane coming to terms with what he wants and learning to trust someone again. I'd have loved to see more of him as a pony.

Here the reader finds a reverse age gap of an older sub and a younger dom. Shane is in charge of taking extensive care of this event and "everything" weighs heavily on his shoulders. He has a no-nonsense, take no excuses, approach to his job and his devotion to Lee who is his boss. Cody has come down from his ranch in Montana to exhibit his wares of harnesses, collars, etc. as a vendor for this event. As the reader delves into this story it's revealed that Shane has led a disappointing life as a sub as he's attracted to pony play, but his previous partner ridiculed Shane for his interest and dumped him because his "ex" thought Shane's proclivity was unacceptable. I greatly enjoyed how patient and understanding Cody was with Shane. Even though Cody was the younger of this pair his emotions showed a far more mature man. Cody was very sensitive to Shane's needs and treated him with the respect Shane required. This story is ripe with rich emotions from both characters and is worth every minute any reader is willing to invest in the story. I am voluntarily leaving this review for the ARC I received. As an aside, if anyone was a fan of Murder She Wrote starring Angela Lansbury there was an episode shown on TV that depicted this pony play subject.

It's time for another annual Pet Play by the Lake LGBTQ charity event in Tahoe where pets from around the world arrive in search of a new master to just show off their skills with their Daddy. Shane is tasked with overseeing the festivities. Cody owns a ranch in Montana and has a side hustle to make leather harnesses, collars and leashes for the kink community and so has rented a booth for the weekend. Once Cody spots grumpy and older Shane he recognises a boy who needs to let go and to prance with his inner pony, but every time he tries to apply for the job he is rebuffed. Will Shane’s scars from a humiliating relationship prevent him from finding the happiness he secretly craves with the carefree Cody? And will a long-distance relationship prove impossible for them to sustain?

This was a story with emotions, focussing on things that were not as important as they seemed, prioritising yourself and learning to rust again. I enjoyed this story which was a short story but a good light-hearted read. This MM story contains mature content and a BSDM-like DDLB relationship including pet play.

This was my first exposure to pony play. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to feel about it, but tried to go in with an open mind. There really wasn't a lot of actual pony play in this book. The story mostly focuses on Shane overcoming his trauma and learning to trust Cody.

I really liked these characters. Cody was great at being able to figure out and balance what Shane needed. Shane originally comes across as the grumpy, stoic guy and I loved seeing the softer and more vulnerable side of him. I wish we had gotten a little more background on him, especially since it played such a huge role in him not being involved in pet play for so long.

There was plenty of heat in this book. It was fun to revisit the Pet Play by the Lake event and see some of the characters from Pretty Puppy. This book can definitely be read as a stand alone, but it was nice to have background info on some of the characters. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I received and ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

A great start to a new series
Shane had been hurt deeply by his ex to the point that he never thought he would like to get in a relationship again or to let his pony come out to play. He was the event manager for the Pet Place by the lake. And he was rushed off his feet.
Cody had come up for the Pet Place as a designer of leather work. He had his own ranch but he also made the most amazing leashes Halters & whips for people to buy. When he came face-to-face with Shane he was instantly attracted but would this boy who was older than him be interested in a daddy that was younger than Shane ??
That is all I’m going to tell you because there are such tender moments in this book and parts of this book where I really saw the struggle that Shane was going through. My heart certainly went out to Shane but Cody was just the person he needed Cody was definitely a good daddy he had patience in the bucket load but he also knew went to be a little bit firmer these two are the dream come true.

This is a sweet story about finding yourself and believing in love again. Shane and Colby may be years apart but their attraction and connection draws them together. Can the two find a way to a happy ever after with their age difference and Shane’s painful past?

I enjoyed seeing Shane and Colby find their way. It was nice to see a younger Dom and an older sub, Shane longs for a chance to let his pony out but his past won’t let him. Colby understands and is more than patient with Shane and encourages him to be himself and enjoy what he wants. Their story moves at a good pace and will have you believing in the power of love. The two make a great couple and I loved seeing them connect. Emotions and trust a strong in tis story. It focuses more on the characters getting together than the pony play aspect. It would have been nice to see a bit more of the pony play included in their story. I loved seeing the way these men interact and find a way to begin to build a future together.

An older sub/younger Daddy, pony play romance is a premise with tons of potential, and I saw moments where that potential seemed ready to shine in this story, but I also saw a few where it really didn’t. There were some things I didn't love— like the implication that submissives always need a dominant to take control in every aspect of their lives, even when that’s not what they say they want, or the fact that Shane hates being touched, and Cody touches him anyway. Repeatedly. Shane’s past has more than its share of disappointment and trauma, and I found him an easy character to care about and want the best for. Cody, on the other hand, I didn’t always like as Dom or a person. There’s potential in this story, but rough edges too, and ultimately I'm not quite sure where to land with it.

Oh, this is fun! Cody is always busy running his ranch, so he doesn't have time to attend the annual Pet Play by the Lake charity event. This year, he decides having a booth to display his leather art is a good entry. Shane, is an older man with a stern demeanor. His facade hides the shame he feels over the scars left over from an abusive relationship. He's hiding a boy who wants to let go and enjoy the care of a loving Daddy. He is damaged and wounded. Cody sees him as not broken, just needing patience, care and love. Cody, wants to be that Daddy. Will they each succeed in finding what they want? Can Shane, let go and trust? Good story. Grabs you by the emotions and tickles you with hope. Good flow. Clever handling of sensitive topics. Very sexy. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I was totally not prepared to have all the feels for this book. After meeting Shane in Lee and Ash's book prior, he was a little gruff and rough around the edges which sorta blended in with this book. But when his sub side started to peek through...I was like awwwwwwwwww mannnnnn, I so misunderstood Shane...but Cody saw Shane and was able to recognize him for the baby boy that he could call his own. Eventhough there was an insane amount of chemistry, Cody still had to work and get Shane to trust and believe. I loved their dynamic...older boy/younger daddy. I don't see it a lot but its always a delight to read. I loved when Shane got to show off his pony side...very nice...everything about this kinky romance was nice...even the sweet ending.

Prancing with Daddy, was a novella about Cody who was a ranch owner and a Daddy in his late 20's and Shane, a 42 year old sub in charge of running the annual Pet Play convention.

Cody, who wanted a ponyboy of his own, was immediately attracted to Shane, although Shane showed no interest in Cody. Shane had a terrible experience the one time he tried to be himself and hadn't gone back to the lifestyle after that. Cody didn't give up and broke down Shane's walls, and showed Shane that not all Daddies were like his previous one.

Overall, I enjoyed this book although I wish it was longer. I felt like things moved very fast and it would have been nice to see Shane experience being Starshine more.

What a cute idea to have an annual Pet Play event in Lake Tahoe! Shane is the event coordinator who has secretly wanted to be a pony but put aside that desire after a horrible first experience. Cody is a rancher who makes leather items for the kink community. He is also a daddy looking for a boy interested in the pony kink and decides to attend the event as a vendor. Their path to HEA is a bit bumpy with Shane's past and Cody's ranch being in Montana, but with the support of their friends and a lot of trust, gentle play, and hot chemistry, they get a very satisfying HEA. This was a fun and enjoyable read. Can't wait for the next one!

Shane started off being a service sub until he was expose to pet play. It made him realize that inside he was a pony and not just any pony, he was a fancy circus pony. His master at the time humiliated him and made him bury his pony deep. He moved from the city and met Lee at a club. Lee is making his resort a pet kink friendly place. Every year they have a pet play weekend that is getting more and more popular. Lee has asked Shane to organize and manage it. Shane works hard to make sure everything is perfect but he is under a lot of stress. Cody, a vendor of collars and harnesses treats Shane like a Little which annoys, frustrates and melts Shane. Maybe with Cody, Shane can be brave enough to be the circus pony he is inside.

I was excited to see this series, as pet play is a guilty pleasure I love to read. I loved Pretty Puppy, the book this whole series is based off of. I was sort of sad with this one tho. Shane is closed off to the idea of letting his inner Starshine out, and sadly, that stays true for almost the entire book. I was really hoping for a lot more, and this book just didn't deliver. Usually the author comes through with her stories, but this one is just not up to her usually standards. I hope the rest of the series is better, especially with all the interesting pets that seem to be heading our way.

Love reading Morticia Knight

Shane had been humiliated by his previous Dom and denied himself his inner self until he meets Cody at the pet play event that he has organized. Cody is younger than Shane but the chemistry is instant between them. After spending time together at the event, Cody convinces Shane to return to his ranch with him to explore the feelings they discovered. Will Cody be able to convince Shane that what they have is real, or will Shane's past have him turning away from what he has been craving and needing. Great book and I look forward to reading more from her in this genre.

This was super cute and I really thought the pacing was well done, which can be difficult with a short story like this. I liked both Cody and Shane and appreciate how well developed they are as characters. Cody was such a perfect match for Shane. I loved how he can’t quite reign himself in when it comes to his excitement over meeting Shane. He doesn’t always get it right, but his heart is in the right place. Poor Shane is so hurt and humiliated by being ostracized by his former Dom, but luckily Cody is the perfect person to coax out Shane’s inner pony- Starshine. Loved it, sweet, steamy, and a lovely happy ending.

This story pulled the heart strings! Shane has had a big heartbreak and been traumatized to the point that he is hiding from the life he really wants!

Cody sees Shane and that’s it for him! He recognizes that he needs patience and to be gentle with him but k it’s it will be worth to have the life he has been waiting to have too!

Together they are sweet and have a lot in common and just a good time together.

Their interactions together and their communication with each other is amazing and is truly the key that can unlock Shane’s heart!

Shane is organizing the Pet Play by the Lake event when he encounters Cody.
Older submissive Shane had only once told a dom he was a pony boy and the Dom had ridiculed him then throw him out. For the past five years he has been working as organising manager for the Pet Play by the Lake event. There he encounters Cody a younger Dom who owns a ranch but has a sideline makes leather goods for those into pet play and other life styles and will have a stall for his goods at the event.

Shane, a hair stylist takes time to assist with the pet play event yearly in Tahoe. He takes his job very seriously and wants everything perfect. After a bad relationship he keeps to himself. Lee the resort owner worries Shane doesn’t take time for himself. Cody is a leatherworker and rancher from Montana is going to be a vendor at this years event. Cody is entranced by Shane but the man is skittish of people. It is Cody’s goal to win over Shane and get him to play again. This story is light hearted and fun to read with a happy ending.

I loved the large age gap and the grumpy/sunshine trope in this one, but the characters, especially the Doms just didn't work for me. If I had been a sub at this event, I'd have headed for the hills asap. I didn't find the Doms here to be very sensitive to how the subs are reacting to things like touch and they seem rather dismissive in general of a subs ability to deal with responsibility and life tasks in general. For me, something about the Dom/sub relationship just felt "off" here and not a true, connection of equals.

Spinning off from Command and Care book 6, Pretty Puppy (not required reading), we find ourselves reading more about Shane, an older boy who helps run the Pet Play boy the Lake event and Cody, a vendor, daddy and hopeful pony trainer looking for the right boy to take home.

Prancing With Daddy is a quick and easy read, featuring instant attraction and quick relationship building and a few very steamy scenes... it lays the groundwork for the multi-author series and is done before you want it to be...

I can't wait to see where the rest of the series takes us!
