3.75✨

It wasn't bad and I thought the story was good but I didn't like the writing. I felt like the dialogue didn't flow very easily and there was just something about the way it was written that I didn't really like. But I'm not a professional writer and my writing's probably not any better lol.

I also didn't feel any sort of chemistry between Talia and Raph. I don't really know what to think about their relationship.

I want to continue the series tho.

Clean YA Dystopian

3.5 Stars ✨

“Everything you do carries an influence. Whether it’s good or bad, it will always impact this world.”

18 year old Talia lives in a land segregated by the Five Callings. As on outcast, she hopes that on her calling day she will finally be accepted by the village that has shunned her for being different. When her best friend Jules, the only person who has ever accepted her- besides her parents, is kidnapped, her whole world is turned upside down. Talia now becomes a fugitive, breaking the law to save her one and only friend. Along the way she runs into 7 strangers, who make her look at her kingdom in a totally different way.

It’s no secret that one of my favorite genres is dystopian, and it’s been a while since I have read one. I was excited to start this and glad I enjoyed it! The writing was simple and had a few common tropes from other dystopians, but the plot also had its own unique twist. The characters were fun to read and I enjoyed the banter and found family aspect. Talia however, is just learning how to find her true self- and I’m hoping she continues to find that in the next book. She will definitely need to grow more of a backbone for what’s to come. The romance was very slow burn and not the major story driver, which I liked. I did see the twist way before it happened, and that’s ok- it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story. It was a quick, fast paced and clean read. Looking forward to seeing where it goes!

This is an ARC that i read by @l.c.pye
This has been a long anticipated read for me!! I first came across this amazing author on Tik Tok while she was still in the process of writing this book. The fact that i had the opportunity to read it now is such a privilege 🤍

• To give a quick synopsis of the book, Talia is the 18 year old protagonist who walks away from her calling ceremony to find her best friend who has been kidnapped. Along the way, she meets a group of seven strangers who help her find her friend and all help open her eyes to the secrets in the kingdom she has grown up in.

• tropes: slow burn romance, found family, outcast FMC

• i really enjoyed this book. It was a YA dystopian book. I haven’t read a book like this since high school and it really took me back. I loved Talia. I loved the group of people she came across on her journey. They were a group of fun people, each with different personalities. The author really took the time to build them each individually. None of the characters fell flat. (I’m in love with Raph).

• i think the author did really good at telling the story. The pacing was good and easy to follow. Towards the end, it did seem to get a little rushed but it didn’t take away from the story. The story was so fun to read about. Every word kept me hooked and i just wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next.

• If you enjoyed books like Divergent or the Selection series, you’ll like this book. This book releases on 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟯𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯! I think it was an amazing debut novel and i am excited for book 2!!

3 stars. I had high hopes for this book. A Fantasy dystopian with a quest seems like my thing but not this time. The whole calling concept was really interesting. All the different rules, the way that the main character was on the sidelines because of her history. Her decision to go out for her best friend. The beginning of this book was pretty strong and it kind of just went downhill from there. I didn’t connect to any of the characters. In the main group, a lot of them felt very stereotypical fantasy characters. I wasn’t invested in the romance. The plot also felt very stereotypical. I felt like there could’ve been a lot more depth with the kidnapping. Even at the end with the reveal it left a lot of questions about kidnapping was handled. The last page did have the shock value but not enough so for me to continue. Overall it was a bit meh for me.

I went ahead and decided to dnf this. I tried, but it read way to ya for me it felt a lot younger than ya. There was typos and a lot of repeat information that I started to get into another reading slump and I don’t want to do that.
I didn’t like any of the characters and they all seem extremely young and they are all way to caught up in their “I’m strong” or “I’m different and everyone treats me different” like that was literally their only personality.

This book was truly splendid!

The best way I can describe The Calling is: a dystopian with Robin Hood-vibes, and elements of The Hunger Games and Divergent mixed in. And I can’t recommend it enough!

Seriously, it took me less than 24 hours to burn through this book. It was fast-paced, light, wholesome, and intriguing. The theme of friendship and community is absolutely precious. I adored the love and dedication that Talia and Jules had for one another. Both of them were strong in their own ways—Talia being soft and caring, while Jules was headstrong and a risk-taker.

And don’t get me started on Raph. The level of excitement I have for him in book 2 is off the charts! 🫠

Also, that cliffhanger left me on the edge of my seat. . . . 🙃

I received an ARC Copy of The Calling from the author in return for a honest review.

This review is very late and in all honesty I have no excuse for it. I’ve been pretty slack at reviewing books recently but I’m finally getting back onto it.

The Calling is a YA dystopian-fantasy novel and I loved it. The story follows 18 year old Talia as she leaves her home town and a major decision behind to rescue her best friend, Jules, who was kidnapped. She discovers a found family and comes to the conclusion that she may not have to choose a calling after all.

Going into this book I didn’t really know what to expect but I ended up enjoying it. The book is a mix of dystopia and fanatsy which was so much fun. I loved all of the characters and overall this book was a blast. I can’t wait to see how the characters develop in the sequel. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick fantasy read or are just starting to read fantasy.

I currently have the arc for the second book, the finding. I plan on reading that sometime this or next month and can’t wait to get back into this world!

It has been a while since a book has drawn me in like this one. The point of view switched every now and then with the new chapters, which normally makes me want to stop reading. That didn’t happen with this book. From the first chapter, I was hooked and wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next for all of the characters. It had great character and story development, with a little bit of clean romance added in. The romance wasn’t the focus but seemed to help facilitate the story and keep you on your toes. L.C. Pye did a great job writing this book and I already can’t wait for the next part of the story.

I was lucky to receive this as an ARC from the author!

I was immediately enraptured by the setting and world-building, Robin Hood meets Divergent. Bits of lore were scattered throughout the book but it was all easy to understand and didn’t simply heap a ton of facts on you.

Talia Caffrey, our main character, has both my sympathy and admiration. After years of being treated like an outcast by the townspeople, she has only grown stronger because of it.

“Mr. Hot and Steely”, or Raph, as he’s usually called, is the perfect broody, closed-off love interest. He and Talia compliment each other and I’m eager to see where their story leads. (Also, that dance scene!!!)
Gil, Adira, and Jules are favorites as well.

This is definitely character-driven rather than plot-driven but that happens to be my thing! The friendships, loyalties, and rivalries were well-paced and the romance had a perfect touch of angst. Pye really puts the “slow” in slow burn (and that’s the greatest compliment I could ever give)

A must read for fantasy and dystopia fans.

And come on, let’s all take a moment to appreciate that art piece of a cover

I had the incredible honor to be an ARC reader for this book and I can’t express how much I loved it!!
From the first page until the last, I was hooked, pulled into a thrilling, fast-paced adventure. Talia, the main character, and her friends are such adorable, relatable characters! All of them were perfect, with each of them having their very own, very unique personality!
I cannot recommend this read enough, and can’t wait for the next one in the series!! I haven’t loved a book like this in a LONG time! <3

I received an ARC of the book. I really enjoyed the book, it is definitely a YA and feels reminiscent of some of the great YAs from the noughties. I felt the story was good and I was behind the characters although I did feel like a little if the story was rushed and slightly under developed, it felt a little like this should be part 1 rather than book 1, however I really think there is a great amount of potential in the story and I am really intrigued to see where the author goes in book 2 (which I am looking forward too). It really is well written and I read it in two days so it certainly keeps your interest! A good debut novel.

I just was a little bored? There was a lot of telling and very little showing. I saw a reel on Instagram that said this was somewhat similar to Divergent with a “Four”-like main love interest and I’m just not seeing it at all.

I received an arc of this book to read. I really enjoyed this book. It kept my interest and I had to know what was going to happen next. I love how the author created their way of living dividing them up into different talents. Talia was definitely my favorite charter and how she grew throughout the book into a strong woman instead of an outcast. The romance (clean) that starts between her and Raph is everything and I cannot wait to read how that plays out in the next book. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to purchase a copy for my bookshelf!

Very YA. The first chapter was as if pulled from Divergent directly with the example of the group system and the “calling” ceremony. I enjoyed the ending cliffhanger.

I thought this was going to be a poorly executed divergent copy cat, but I was wrong. The calling was a great dystopian that follow Talia and her calling choices. I’m very excited for the next book! Ahhhhhhhh I need book 2 ASAP. I received this book as an ARC from the author (she’s amazing btw) and finished it in a night. I cannot wrap my mind around how good this is. You can definitely tell that it is a debut novel, but it is one of the best published debuts I’ve ever read. The plot was everywhere, but in a good way, not in poorly written way. I found myself relating so personally with the MC Talia. I can definitely relate to the fear of not conforming out of being alone. I love Raph too with all my soul!!! And Jules omg. They are all my favorite. I had a great time annotating and theorizing about how the book was going to go. Let me just say, I did actually guess some of the twists, but definitely not all!

I finished this book in one day! Normally I prefer fantasy genre, but Y’ALL!!! I loved this book from the first page. It immediately draws you in with the caste type system, the feeling of not belonging, the absolute loyalty and kindness in Talia. I loved the slight world building, all based on what the Main Character knew and lived, then the slow world building the more Talia grew to learn about her own world. I will warn you there’s a cliff hanger that may make you want to throw your book (or device) across the room.
WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK?!?! I’m excited to learn more about the kingdom and the neighboring kingdoms, hopefully more world and world history building will be covered!

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

4.5⭐️

I loved this book! I found L.C. Pye through Tiktok and was immediately drawn into this story. Luckily, I received it early and dug in! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In the country of Landore, each village it divided into five Callings, (think Divergent’s factions but with a twist.) Talia Caffrey is the village outcast because her parents are from two different Callings. Her Calling is just a day away and she is torn with which to choose when her best friend, Jules is kidnapped.
Talia skips her ceremony to go and search for her friend when she runs into a group of strangers on their own hunt.

I loved the character of Talia. She was written well and I believed she had good character development along with all the secondary characters as well. Eitan and Raph were favorites as well.

The Calling is perfect for fans of Divergent and Hunger Games.

I received this ARC from L.C. Pye at the beginning of the month and haven’t been able to put it down! L.C. is so sweet and has given so much time for not only this book but us readers as well. AND CAN YOU BELIEVE ITS HER DEBUT NOVEL!

The Calling:
I love the world and relationships that Talia has built. It was very easy to get into and was unlike the other dystopia/fantasy books that I have read (in a good way:)). I love the friendship between Talia and Jules. They both want to protect one another and see each other succeed, which is so endearing. Talia gets into this hunt because of Jules, but she finds this sense of belonging that she has never felt before. I really like how she never ended up choosing a calling and is following her own path.

I also love Raph! He is the perfect mix of this dark and brooding and compassionate and protective character. I can’t wait to have his POV in the second book! It will be so cool to see a part of the story from his perspective. I always love having both the guy and the girl’s povs! Love a good slowburn🫶🏻

This story is captivating and the start of such a good story! Love the cliffhanger and can’t wait for book 2! NEED IT ASAP! MAKE SURE TO GO BUY “THE CALLING” on May 30th!!!

I really wanted to like this book. I really did.

I’ll start with what I did not love.

The writing style was very juvenile, which I know it is YA, but I even thought it might be better for middle grade. It seems too young for even my 13-year-old brother. It had a lot of telling instead of showing.

I did not feel connected to the main character hardly at all until the very end. I also did not feel connected to her friendship with Jules. A lot of it felt very cliche to me and not in the way I like it. The dialogue did not flow for me and felt very unrealistic.

The romance part of it felt very forced, which made me really sad because I love romance. I felt there needed to be more between the two characters to make you actually feel the love. I thought there would be a happy ending and there was not. The cliffhanger at the end felt out of place to me. The plot was very rushed and predictable to be quite honest.

However, the thing that makes me give this 2 stars instead of 1 is the potential. The plot had a lot of potential and it’s a great idea. The execution was just a little disappointing. I will not be reading the rest of this series. I was very close to DNF’ing. :(

Maybe in the future I will give it another chance.

Love the author though and I’d be willing to try any other works that don’t go along with this series.

I feel bad because I don’t want the author to be discouraged but man I BARELY finished this…and only did because I had to for my book club.

The writing was very immature and left nothing to the imagination…and not in a good way. We would be told what the character was thinking down to the last detail and then it was verbalized in the next sentence with the exact same words for the dialogue.

The actual main character was extremely annoying and felt very inconsistent with her supposed age. She was whiny and had a weird relationship with her dad…who called her princess and tucked her into bed…as an adult child.

The romance was very obvious and cliché.
The plot felt disorganized and only got good in the last 10 pages or so. There were definitely some holes in how society was set up but that wasn’t such a big deal. Some parts of the book didn’t need to be there - felt like the author was just trying to get to the word count in some spots.

The two main characters are sickly co-dependent - one having massive insecurity and the other needing someone insecure to make her feel important.

And I swear, if I hear any variation of the words “I don’t feel like I belong anywhere” one more time, I might just keel over.

I’m really sorry but this book is just not very good. 😔
