Introducing humans into our world is dangerous enough, but when my twin’s mate has a worried brother who charges in at the wrong time to see me in full dragon mode, it’s downright deadly. To save all our scale-covered behinds, I take the brother as my mate. I might’ve spared him, but I’m the one who has to live with a guy who’s bitter about our circumstances and revolted by me.
Vaughn
Memphis is the most sinful-looking woman I’ve ever met. But that’s the problem. She’s not a woman. I’ve seen what she can do, and it’s terrifying. I’m a doctor. Violence and chaos turn me off—until I get a glimpse of the toll being a ruler of a small town full of dragon shifters takes on her. Yet if I start seeing her as a partner, a real person, I have to accept that I gave up everything to keep my sister safe. My practice. My home. My lonely single life. I’m little more than a prisoner, but the more I’m around Memphis, the harder it is to care.
Marie Johnston is an award-winning, best-selling paranormal and contemporary romance writer. She grew up in the upper Midwest and planned to go to college for English. Didn't happen. She started college in accounting and was awful! Grabbing her inner science geek by the pocket protector, she changed to microbiology and medical technology where her only writing involved scientific articles and procedures. Eventually, she left full-time work for full-time baby raising but kept thinking, "one day, I'd like to write a book." Finally, before any more time passed, Marie decided to buckle down and write. She loves it!
The Dragon’s Affirmation by Marie Johnston is the final book in the dragon shifter series and it was worth the wait. Memphis Peridot is a woman who you don’t really know what to expect. In previous books, (which you do not need to read) she comes across almost cold but when you read this book you find that isn’t the case at all. She is a woman who has the weight of an entire community on her shoulders. Yes she had her brothers to help with the burden but she takes most of it on herself. Memphis is so much more than expected.
Vaughn is the older brother of Cricket, the heroine from book 2, and he has be forced into a mating with Memphis because of things that he witnessed. He isn’t dealing well with his situation, and it’s understandable but he comes across as extremely selfish. He refuses to open up to Memphis or even allow her to be a part of his life for a long time.
For a big part of the book, it seems like a losing battle and they won’t ever make strides in the right direction. But it does happen. Memphis allows her self to be fully vulnerable and lets Vaughn see that she is more than he imagined. Vaughn took a while to like, and honestly I wasn’t sure if he was going to be redeemable in the end. But finally listens and sees that not everything is so black and white.
I am sorry to see the end of this series it has been a wild flight.
I think Memphis' story was the best of all! You think you know a character until you actually read their story and learn things from their past. Vaughn turns out to be a nice surprise too. Who'da thunk mister stiff and rigid could be a dirty talker? The conclusion of the Peridot clan's story is a must read, and well worth the time!
Memphis has been a mysterious figure in this series, an unexpectedly good leader but prickly and tough to get to know. Vaughn raised his sister and made her his life, but when he comes to town to make sure she’s ok, he stumbles into something he should not. If Memphis were truly the unfeeling, reactive monster so many believe her to be, she would have just killed Vaughn and that would be that, but she loves her brother and her brother’s mate, so she mates Vaughn instead. Rather than gratitude, all Vaughn feels is anger at his loss of choice, of having his life ripped away and remodeled to conform with dragon cultural expectations. I loved Memphis, she has such depth to her. Her struggles are real, both to do the right thing and be the leader her people need, and also to be seen as more – to believe she can be more. Vaughn was more ambiguous for me, because for a lot of the book I honestly thought he was being a spoiled brat. Then again, he did get introduced to dragon culture at the very worst possible moment, but it seemed to me that he spent a lot of the book wallowing before he even tried to see things from Memphis’ point of view. However, once he got there, his support for her – his seeing her true self – was so precious, it became easy to forgive him for his earlier petulance. I think I say this every time, but this really was my favorite of the dragon books. The complexity of the situation and of Memphis’ character definitely makes it one of the most interesting to me, and Vaughn’s redemption as the only person to really understand Memphis won me over to his side.
Memphis finally gets her happy ever after! She’s the ruler of the Peridot Clan, and therefore the duties of keeping the clan safe fall on her. Her twin Maverick’s mate is a human whose brother comes to town looking for her and happens to see Memphis in dragon form, killing a traitorous council member. So, she has 2 choices … 1) mate him or 2) kill him. He is a doctor and pretty nice to look at so she goes with option 1, mate him. The book starts out with them being mated for a few months and living separate lives. Vaughn’s life had to completely change and he’s not happy about it. He hides in his house office sleeping on the floor, doing zoom calls and trying to stay away from the gorgeous dragon that is his wife. They are both attracted to each other. They seem to get closer as Vaughn learns more about what it means to be the ruler of a dragon clan. Memphis is given a vacation to Vegas from her brothers. They just happened to get Vaughn a seat next to her. This is a huge turning point in the story. They realize how crazy about each other they are. The story is full of shifter drama. Vaughn jumped right in to help out and as he’s taking care of Memphis, she is challenged. He saves the day again and I was so happy for him. He’s stepping up to his role as the rulers mate. There’s a happy ending and I was all smiles. I hope this can lead to future stories! I love how the families can intertwine. I highly recommend this story if you are a paranormal fan.
Before I stumbled upon Marie's second book in this Peridot series, I'd never read a dragon shifter book. I liked that one enough to preorder this third entry into the series and I quite enjoyed it. Three problems I often see in many books with a strong female lead that irritate me: the woman is a shrew, the man is a timid mouse, and/or the male lead just isn't a match for her. That wasn't the case here. I loved that Memphis was unapologetically in-charge and that Vaughn wasn't threatened by that, nor did he feel the need to dim her light. Letting her lead and growing to understand what the shifter way of life meant to her was beautiful to watch. Marie did a terrific job showing two people getting to know each other after finding themselves thrust together in such an awkward way. I was cheering for Vaughn and could respect him as his mate's ally. Good stuff, well-written and imaginative. I read this in a single day.
I was sooooo excited for this one! The thrill of the dragon shifter meets the grumpy human. I had previously met both characters from other books and they both have strong personalities. Vaughn was the annoying protective older brother and Memphis is the leader of the clan. Each one puts others needs above theirs. Their meet cute is different and I just thought Wow that stinks for both but……they do have outrageous chemistry and their family that gives that extra push.
I loved seeing how involved Maverick and Cricket were in the two trying to get them together. Then add in Levi and Briony to help defend the clan. This is a recipe for laughs and fun.
Overall this is sadly the last of the Peridot clan story. I loved meeting them all and their individual challenges to become mated. What a great series that ended with an incredible book!
Memphis is happy for her twin brother Maverick finding his mate in Cricket. But Cricket’s protective brother Vaughn came to check on her, just as Memphis as ruler, had to dispatch a feral shifter. Now she could either kill him to preserve their secret - or marry him.
Three months later, Vaughn still resents his new life. As a doctor he could still take calls on-line, but he kept himself locked away in the office both to eat and sleep and only came out when Memphis was gone for the day.
Now the council is pressing for offspring - and he can’t even look at her or talk to her. Memphis is exhausted. The weight of her situation is dragging her down. It’s an emotional journey for these two to even begin to work things out. A highly enjoyable read.
***** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book *****
This is a definite Opposites Attraction story!! Memphis finally has her story told and it's a very rocky, wild, emotional and you better have that selt belt fasten...I couldn't decide if I hated/loved Vaughn or not...throughout the book I really struggled with him. I honestly wanted to punch him. He infuriated me so much😡. Kudos Marie for writing such a frustrating character throughout this book!!😅😉. It's been such a long time since a character has frustrated me. Loved the plot and catching up with the other characters..I do highly recommend this book...but would advise adding chocolate and maybe some wine to help deal with Vaughn!! 😣🤦😜
I received this book as an ARC and voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Memphis is a kick ass, dragon shifting heroine with a hidden heart of gooey marshmallow. Vaughn is the uptight, rigid and angry human doctor forced to mate with her. Obviously once Vaughn gets over his anger issues the sparks will fly!
This was another terrific read in this series. Marie never disappoints with great, relatable characters. It takes Vaughn awhile to get his head out of his you know what, but finally Memphis gets the mate she’s deserved from the very first book she was introduced in. It takes a strong, secure man to fall in love with, and respect, an equally strong female lead. My kind of story. Definitely recommend.
This is the third instalment of the Peridot clan stories from this dragon shifter world. It was such a joy to read, after knowing the brothers of the ruling family (Maverick and Levi) from the previous books, we now get to know Leader of the clan and sister, Memphis.
Having spent so much time with the clan over the three books, the characters feel deeper and richer and the storyline more engaging. There is a depth and realism to the reactions of Vaughan; there isn’t ‘insta-love’ (which would have been weird), but there was angst, chemistry, excitement, intrigue and a rich story. I loved it.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Vaughn chooses the exact wrong time to come to Peridot Falls. He arrives in the middle of a battle between Memphis and a member of her board in their dragon forms. And Memphis executes the board member. According to shifter law, Vaughn must either be executed or mated to a shifter. So, Memphis chooses to mate with him.
Vaughn just came to town to check on his little sister. Now he’s had to give up his thriving career, move to Peridot Falls and mate to a woman he saw execute another person. He’s not taking it well. Can the two of them come to an understanding? Or even love?
This is a fab finale for the series and I think the best one of the series ;) Memphis was awesome - complex, loyal, devoted and living with a huge responsibility as leader. Vaughn, whom she mated so she didn't have to execute, was a strict and rather rigid guy...and also a bitter guy because his choices were removed from him. However, they had great chemistry and love did find a way. Expect to feel the heat when these two go at it and he brings out his dirty talk ;P I love that Vaughn grew so much and was able to become the mate Memphis needed. This was an engaging and highly entertaining series and I can't wait for what's next by this author :D
Memphis and Vaughn were forced to mate after he saw her shift. Now he feels trapped. He gave up his medical practice to move to Nowhere, MN. And they have no relationship and very little communication. I love that her brothers try to help these two along. And when they're threatened, Vaughn steps up to prove that they are a team. And his filthy mouth... a nice contrast to his uptight persona. The book is easy to read, but there's a lot of story packed in a little package. I received an advance copy of the book, and this is my honest review.
Short dragon romance book, the 3rd in the triology. This book was by far the most romantic of the 3. Both the FMC and the MMC were super sweet and although she fell first, he definitly fell harder. I wish there was a little more of a build up with the MMC's flip to hate from attraction because it definitly felt very 180 degrees but his care for her aftewards was too good. Some of the usual details from the other books were missing in this one though that would've made the story feeling more fluffy and fulfilled (not so short) but it was still a decent read.
Memphis and Vaughn had a lot to overcome. They really struggled with the emensity of their differences, but the attraction and chemistry they felt helped to create a bond. Rulership is not easy when communication doesn't happen naturally.
I read this in one day, it was good. I feel like it was a little rushed. Like Vaugh changed his perspective rather fast but could just be me. But I enjoyed this and the whole series!
Highly entertaining, emotional and exciting journey! Heartwarming romantic journey filled with engaging charters, intriguing story line, witty banter, heart racing twists and undeniable passion. Really enjoyed this emotional and exciting adventure!
I've read a few of these intertwined dragon clan stories and enjoy them all. We get to hear both sides in the stories and they are relatable. I really like Memphis, carrying her clan on her shoulders. Vaughn is a great match for her. Read it!
Vaughn had a real life awakening, comes to town to see his sister and watches someone lose their head.Things do go bump in the night and a human mate for Memphis is real scary.
Each of the shifter books just gets better, and better. I’ve loved every story, but I think this might be my favorite. If you love shifters, you will love this story.
I didn’t like Vaughn until he got over himself and finally started trying to make things work. Once they finally started working together the story improved.
This was the best of the two that I’ve read. Strong FMC that does bow to a man and an MMC that realises that’s it’s okay to have a strong partner. Such a nice touch to needy women!
If you've read the other books in this series, then you've met Memphis and Vaughn. Memphis rules the Peridot clan and that is a thankless job to be sure and one that weighs on her more heavily than most realize. Vaugh, unwittingly, gave up EVERYTHING when he charged into town to save his little sister. He saw things that he shouldn't and that are deadly to know. Memphis "saves" him by making him her mate - which he does DOES NOT appreciate.
Vaughn is a little tough to like as he is stubborn and pretty cold towards Memphis for much of this story. I liked Memphis more as the story went on and we got to know her better and see her motivations and burdens of running this town.
Once things heat up between them - things get steamy! These two have several obstacles to overcome - including themselves, but in the end - it's worth the wait!
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
