As a teen, Indy learned that Destiny would lead her to the man of her dreams. His name was Nick.
Fifteen years later, Fate grants her a second chance at her One True Love. And even though leaving her house for anything less than a latte is terrifying, Indy has to take it.
See, Indy O’Neall isn’t anything like the adventurous heroine she writes. For her, a good night is sharing a pint of mint chip ice-cream with her roomate Sasha while cheering on the best damn basketball team in the league.
But this is Destiny calling. Indy can’t ignore it.
Unfortunately, one man is standing in her way.
Ethan Fraser.
He’s six feet of confidence in the body of a superhero, and a bone to pick with her future husband. Indy is happy to steer clear of the gorgeous, motorcycle-riding, rock-climbing, elementary teacher.
The problem is, no matter what Indy does, all roads seem to lead back to Ethan.
Ethan is charming. Ethan is flirtatious. But Ethan isn’t her soulmate.

"You don't need saving, Indy." The seriousness behind his words was overwhelming. "But I'll help. Anywhere, anytime.” "Like my sidekick." "Like a man who'd do anything for you."
4.5⭐️ First of all let me say this, Ethan quickly became a new favourite book boyfriend 😍 after reading this.
Dani McLean's 'It Has To Be You' hit that perfect spot for me. I really adored this feel good book. I found myself smiling throughout.
“Indy, you’re the kind of special I never could have wished for. Because I didn’t think it existed.” He brushed her cheek so gently. Always gentle. “I had convinced myself that magic didn’t exist, and then this gorgeous woman came along, talking about fate and soulmates, and she was everything I ever wanted. And do you know what? It made me want to believe.”
Read if you love: Quick reads Friends to lovers Witty banter Slow burn A bit of Spice In a book slump
This book is so adorable and so cosy, a very quick read with a fun premise that played out just like a movie, and although I guessed what the twist was from very early on, it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the book at all, not in the slightest bit. The characters were so lovable. It's sad it was just a short novella!!
I really recommend this if you're looking for a quick read or perhaps a book to get you out of your reading slump.
Thank you NetGalley & Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this e-arc
This was the sweetest thing ever omg I already want to reread it😫
Indy was told by a psychic that the bracelet she has is special. That the man it belongs to is her destiny. It was gifted by her ex boyfriend. So she searches for him and instead keeps bumping into his cousin.
Anywayyyyyyyyyyyy without spoilers I LOVE ETHAN OKAY. I love both of them but OMG ETHAN AND HIS FILTHY MOUTH.
This is one of the sweetest, and hottest👀, novellas I’ve read.
My favourite thing about Dani’s novellas are how perfectly bingeable they are. Yes, they’re short, but they’re also incredibly unique, well developed, and well written, with banter and tension for days.
It Has To Be You is no different. I loved how Indy and Ethan just settled into one another. I loved that everything Ethan said was steeped in innuendo and longing. Ethan is a top tier book boyfriend and the mirror scene at the end??? Get out of here. It was phenomenal.
I highly recommend this book and the series of novellas (that are all standalones) as a whole!
this put me in a slump and then trying to finish it to get it off my currently reading its just gonna push me back into a slump worse. Ive gotten like 90% through the only 200ish pages and I just cannot finish it. I didn't like the first couple in the series I read but I read them first to get a better picture for this review....
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book
For anyone who's ever struggled with believing in fate and taking chances on creating your own destiny!
This was another super fun novella in the Movie Magic series. I really enjoy all the magical realism elements the author incorporates into her work and this one was a bit on the tamer side but had a great twist ending.
Indy was a super relatable FMC, struggling to write the HEA finale to her popular series and feeling like a romance writer fraud having never been in true love herself. Believing the answer lies in tracking down an old ex that a fortune teller told her was the one she'd end up with, she attempts to find him only to keep running into his very dreamy cousin, Ethan instead.
Elementary school teacher Ethan is top notch book boyfriend material!! I was all about his big heart, hot motorcycle and always listening ear. Plus the mirror sex scene, phew, SUPER spicy! Many thanks to NetGalley and the author for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Okay…this novella was so good First, I wanna thank NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for early access to this arc for my honest review! I haven’t read any of the Movie Magic novellas before and this was my first read by Dani McLean and what a read it was! I really really liked Ethan and Indy and the overall essence of fate. I’m always a bit hesitant with novellas & never feel like I get enough from them but the pacing and writing was excellent. From the moment they met, every encounter was buzzing and Ethan somehow always knew exactly what to do or say. He was perfect. And the ending>>> It couldn’t have been better.
Thanks Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
"It Has To Be You" is the fourth installment of the Movie Magic Novellas series. I haven't read any of the previous novellas yet, but I'm definitely getting to them now. I'm glad I came across this novella, it was a pleasant surprise. It's a feel-good, fluffy, and heart-warming book. A perfect palate cleanser.
serendipity noun. The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
Fate was always present in Indy's family. Allegedly. So, at 16, after her boyfriend had given her a family heirloom bracelet, she went to a psychic to make sure Nick was the one, her soulmate. Fifteen years later, and most definitely not with Nick anymore, she finds that bracelet again. Was it a destiny sign? Just a way to figure that out. But she didn't know that by pursuing this path she would find Ethan, Nick's cousin. And find him she would. Every. Damn. Time.
"'Fate didn't make this happen. You did.' The soft tone of his voice wrapped around her. 'By your measure, you're my destiny.'"
I fell head over heels for Ethan. Especially for how passionate he was for teaching and how thoughtful he was to Indy. They were very easy to cheer for. It was lovely to see them falling in love little by little. I also loved how the author played Indy's ordeal in writing about her character falling in love whilst Indy herself was falling in love.
This was my first time reading Dani McLean’s work – I am now on a mission to read every single word she has written.
Indy’s family were all destined to find their soulmates, and she’s convinced her boyfriend from high school – the one that got away – is hers. After hitting some writer’s block for her romance novel, she’s on a mission to help fate find her by finding her long lost true love. However, everywhere she turns, she just barely misses her ex but seems to keep finding his cousin, Ethan. Since he also is on the lookout for his cousin, they decide to buddy up and find them together. In the process, they evolve from enemies to genuine friends, with chemistry that cannot be denied.
Just the mere existence (even in fiction) of Ethan should be illegal. He’s truly the perfect cinnamon roll hero – tall, chiseled, *wears glasses*, teaches elementary school, is cutely nerdy but also rides a motorcycle. I love seeing Indy not only get outside of her comfort zone but also stand up for her needs and boundaries when she needs them. The payoff of this slow burn was *chef’s kiss*. I’m obsessed and cannot wait to go back and read the rest of these standalone novellas.
e o ethan… ty to my man!
This was soooo fun! I really enjoyed this so much and love Ethan & Indy. This is a quick novella and you could really feel the connection between the two so well.
Ethan is legit perfect and I sorta wanted more of this so I could read about him more 🤫
Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC!
This novella honestly felt like my favourite kind of early 2000s cheesy romcom movies in the best way possible! This was the first book I have read by Dani McLean, but I definitely will be reading more of her work.
For only 149 pages, the pacing was great and really helped the development of the relationship between Ethan and Indy without feeling too insta-lovey. The characters themselves were easy to root for and felt like real, regular people, which was a great change from the usual multi-millionaire boyfriends in romance novels. They both had great banter and chemistry, whilst also carrying a deeper, more meaningful message to think about. Ethan really is the dream man.
This book literally had me SQUEALING. I will definitely be getting a physical copy for my shelf too!
Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC.
OMG I LOVED THIS. the pacing was perfect (and i’m always a little scared about that when reading a novella), the chemistry amazing and the whole destiny storyline was very much loved by me. whenever ethan opened his mouth i was shaking (even when he was silent i was shaking i wont lie). this man was the perfect mixture of soft and hot. indy was sooo relatable and i just loved her. this truly was amazing and i would definitely recommend it to others.
A successful Author in her early thirties, Indy always believed she would find that once in a life time, soul mate kind of love like her parents and grandparents before her. But as she tries to write the HEA for her FMC Riley Jones, it becomes glaringly obvious that she hasn't experienced true love for herself.
So when she comes across an old bracelet in her things, it feels like fate pulling her back to her ex-boyfriend Nick, who gave it to her 15 years ago. A psychic once told her that the bracelet was linked to her one true love, and she decides to take fate into her own hands.
But no matter how hard she tries to 'bump into' Nick (with the help of social media tags), Indy can only seem to find his gorgeous and tall cousin Ethan, whose focus has lasered on to her. Is fate really leading her to Nick? Or is she missing that fate can work in mysterious ways...
DANI!! You've done it again. What a perfectly magical and delicious love story ❤ You've crafted a vulnerable and endearing character in Indy and come on now... Ethan is absolutely swoonworthy. Literally every. single. thing. he does and says is perfect. Oh and the 🔥 is amazing (the final sentence in your acknowledgement is the truth!!)
I love the short stories you've crafted in this series and the fact that Chance is just that little bit 'more' than most places. I'm completely hooked and can't wait to go back and read through the rest of your published work that's waiting for me on my Kindle!
Thank you again to @danimcleanwrites for providing me with this ARC. All opinions are my own and I hope you'll run and order all of her books because they are absolutely worth it!
When Indy was a teenager, she visited a fortune teller. The fortune teller told her that her favorite sports team would win, she would become an author and that her soulmate was the man that owned the bracelet that sat upon Indy's wrist. The first two had come true so fifteen years later, Indy is in search for Nick, the man who gave her the bracelet. In the midst of searching for Nick, Indy meets his cousin Ethan. Both have their own motives for trying to find Nick. Throughout this short story, Indy and Ethan form a connection which soon grows into something more. I loved Indy and Ethan's character was a sweetie. The story is short but a nice little romance.

Ethan is definitely a new book boyfriend of mine. This was such an amazing novella with just the right amount of spice and romance mixed in. Considering the length the plot was so well developed that it didn’t feel like a novella. I really loved both main characters and the chemistry between them. This had a super cute plot that had me reading the entire book in one sitting.
ARC Review (thanks NETGALLEY!) I’ve read some dirty nasty books before and not one of them made me blush as hard as Ethan did. He was just so swoony! Book was so adorable and both main characters seemed realistic (I really wish Ethan was real and mine) I’m taking a star off only because I wished it were longer. Looking forward to reading more by this author!
First of all thank you to Netgalley and Dani McLean for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
I cannot express how much I loved this book, I devoured it in one sitting. This is my first time reading any of Dani McLean's work and I will immediately be adding more to my library.
I absolutely adored Indy and Ethan, their chemistry was incredible and their banter had me smiling non stop. I honestly wasn't expecting much in terms of forming a connection with the characters due to it only being a novella but I was so pleasantly surprised. I was routing for them from the start and was so so happy with the ending. This was a lovely, sweet, funny romance and the spicy scene was incredible too.
"It has to be you" by Dani McLean is a heartfelt romance about finding true love and acceptance while also pursuing the idea of "destiny" and people that were meant to be together.
This was without a doubt a quick read. Not only because of its short length, but also due to the very accessible writing style and fast pace of the book. I got into it quite quickly and our main character, Indy, was easy to root for right from the start.
I loved to follow her relationship with Ethan. Their chemistry was amazing and I had a lot of fun seeing them grow closer together.
All the themes mentioned in this, such as the struggles of an author or the fear of never finding unconditional love, were handled so well and fit the story perfectly.
Overall, this book was a quick and easy, but also enjoyable read that I can recommend to everyone that just wants to read about a cute romance and loveable characters!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book ahead of its release!
This book turned out to be a true gem that left me pleasantly surprised and absolutely hooked from the start. The slow-burn element added a layer of depth to the narrative that made it all the more satisfying to read. Indy, the drama queen, struggles with her emotions so that readers can sympathize with. Ethan, instead, is the epitome of what we all want in a partner. This novel is an enchanting and delightful read, full of genuine emotion, hilarious moments, and top-tier spice. It's not just a love story, but a story about taking control of one's own relationship and actively choosing to fight for and love someone every day. So, if you're in need of a good book, look no further - this is it! ⚠ Thanks to #NetGalley & #DaniMcLean for the eARC copy.
Guys!!!!! This was soooo freaking amazing!!! I could gush about this book forever. Ethan... Ethan freaking Fraser is the epitome of book boyfriend perfection! He was sweet, caring, and passionate about his life without being an arsehole about it. He was supportive and amazing, and the way he was always there for Indy *tears* And Indy... my sweet summer child 💕 I love her. I love how amazing she was in every way.... with her flaws and doubts. I related to her so hard, and now I want my own Ethan (and Sasha! She's the best bestie!) so I can have someone who has my back every time. This book... I love the sweet moments that made me giddy. The funny moments made me laugh out loud. The seggsy times were scorching. Even the moments that made me teary-eyed, i loved them. It was perfect. This series is like a warm blanket during a cold night... it's amazing, and this book is definitely my favorite. Definitely recommend this to everyone.
Thank you so much to Dani McLean for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
“It Has To Be You” is a cute quick read romantic comedy featuring engaging banter, laughs, and the “warm and fuzzies” we love about the genre. The satisfying slow burn romance between main characters Ethan and Indy is peppered with witty comebacks, swoon worthy moments, and just the right amount of spice. I quickly fell in love with Ethan as a book boyfriend and the chemistry between him and Indy.
Romance lovers will love this one!

RATING ⭐⭐⭐ 3.5 out of 5.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Indy was sure life would turn out a bit different. Certainly when it came to her personal, romantic relationships. It was easy to be sure, as a fortune teller told her the destiny awaiting her, almost fifteen years ago. As a confused teen, it had been reassuring to know, that her highschool sweetheart would find his way back to her. So when amidst the whirlwind of writing her next novel – and almost failing to turn in an acceptable manuscript – she discovers an old, forgotten bracelet he gifted her all those years ago, she lets her overactive imagination run wild and decides to take Fate upon a dance. Only if his old lover would be as tempting as his cousin is… REVIEW: This novel is rather short, I was wondering why I flew through it. But honestly, the shorter format maybe worked in favour of the author, as the fast paced action did not bother me this way. It was insta-connection almost at first sight for Indy and Ethan and they were adorable in every scene they shared. Ethan has the qualities of a great main character, he was buff but sweet, nerdy but emotionally aware, and, AND he rode a bike. He legitimately turned out almost nothing like I would’ve expected from his first encounter with Indy, giving closed-off, arrogant vibes, while in fact he was a big teddy bear. Indy‘s creativity sometimes hindered her: she fell into her own traps, her mind and conviction of Fate playing devil’s advocate. But, this also made her very much human which is why I was able to imagine what’s it like, walking in her shoes, trying to come up with answers in emotionally draining times. This was my first encounter with the author, but it may not remain the last. TROPES FOR YOUR READING PLEASURE: - friends to lovers - golden retriever boy/shy girl - it’s always been you - contemporary romance
If there’s one thing Indy is certain of, it’s that one day she will meet her soulmate, just like her parents and their parents before them. According to a psychic, it’s Nick - a guy she dated fifteen years ago. In order to have her chance at true love, Indy attempts to find Nick again, yet the only person she can get a hold of is Ethan, Nick’s handsome cousin. Luckily, Ethan is also looking for Nick, so the two pair up to find him together.
This book was cute. I enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters and the way it developed. Ethan was so goddamn sweet - I’m a sucker for a kind love interest so this was right up my alley. The writing was good, I liked the light-hearted, comedic tone. All the romantic elements of the novella were done really well, but something I did struggle with was the whole ‘fate’ thing. Indy blindly trusts that there’s a person out there destined to be hers and is guided by the words of a psychic to essentially hunt down an ex she hasn’t seen in fifteen years. That was fine (not personally my cup of tea, but I get it), what irked me the most was the stalkerish ways in which she tried to get in contact with Nick. I can respect that she has strong beliefs, and that’s why she’s set on Nick being her soulmate, but for a majority of the novella she is going places he frequents in hopes of bumping into him, and it’s a little unnerving (maybe this is just me?). Indy continues to try and find Nick, even though she has Ethan, who’s an absolute catch (and into her), by her side. It just felt a little silly, especially when her and Ethan got along so well and would obviously make a good couple.
In saying that, I do really like how it all wrapped up in the end. Everything fell into place quite seamlessly. The romance was sweet, and overall I had a good time.

It Has To Be You is the fourth book in the Movie Magic Novellas series and although I haven't read the other books in the series yet, I thoroughly enjoyed this one and will go back to eat up the rest soon.
Indy's family members have always found their soulmates and have had the best romance, and as she goes to the fortune teller to give her a hint about the love of her life, she points to bracelet she's wearing, which is a family heirloom given to her by her boyfriend Nick, and hints that she could find her soulmate through its source. Fifteen years later, Indy is single and trying to finish writing her last book in the series and has no true inspiration for the romance because she hasn't experienced true love herself. That's when she finds the old bracelet and wants to take the help of Fate to get back with Nick. Except, every time she tries, she keeps finding Ethan, Nick's cousin.
“By your measure, you’re my destiny.”
I loved this book so much! I loved the little whimsical touch to the book and conversation around Fate and Destiny. I absolutely adored Ethan as a character. I loved how sweet and soft he was, his passion for teaching and how amazing and thoughtful he was towards Indy. It was spectacular to see how much character growth we saw from Indy even though this was a novella. She grew on me and I loved it. The chemistry between the two characters was from the get go and only enhanced towards the end of the book - I'm talking about you, mirror scene 🙈💖
Usually novellas don't work for me but I enjoyed this one to my heart's content! 💖
“It doesn’t make sense. I thought my destiny was pointing toward Nick, but you….you still like me, without any reason.” “I have plenty of reasons.” “But it’s not—“ She stopped, the words stuck. “Not what? Destiny?” Ethan sighed. “No, it’s not. It’s better. Because this is me, choosing to fall in love with you. It’s not something I was made for or forced into. I wanted to, and I did.”
“I should’ve been chasing you.” 😭😭😭😭

It’s no secret that I’m a Dani McLean fan. This novella is by far my favorite for several reasons. The FMC Indy and the MMC Ethan are just so damn relatable and funny as hell together. I really like the Fate aspect in this one. Sometimes what we want is NOT what we deserve. And this book really solidifies that. I absolutely love how Indy and Ethan meet. I won’t spoil it, but it’s honestly really meant to be from the start. You can feel their pull towards each other and their chemistry from the beginning is undeniable. And this book is FULL of references, which I absolutely love. Swipe for a list of them (the picture was taken from Dani’s instagram). THE ENDING TUGGED AT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY HEARTSTRINGS!
