After hearing about a dragon ranch and monster haven out in Wyoming, I set off on a road trip with my roommates and two goals: pet a dragon and live out my cowboy riding fantasy.

Lassos and Lace is the 4th book in the Monsters in My Bed series. While it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the whole series (especially book three) to fully enjoy it. That being said, the author does provide a summary of events to help catch readers up.
Ever since meeting Hotdog, I’ve been curious about his past and looked forward to his story. I wondered who or, rather, which monster would be the one to handle him.
This story picks up right after book three. Charlie and Cupid have gone through the tear in order to help out Cupid’s beloved pet. Hotdog is left behind at a ranch near the area owned by Hopper, a Jackalope. He’s a grumpy, lonely rancher who does not want to be a babysitter to a human, especially a mouthy city boy who seems to have a fetish for monsters.
Hotdog and Hopper are total opposites but worked together as a couple so well. We get a Daddy/boy dynamic between the two. Hopper has been alone for a long time, and the one time he took a chance with someone was when he hired a ranch hand. However, that person deeply betrayed him, yet Hotdog is able to worm his way into his heart.
One thing I found funny was while all his friends were hesitant about falling in love with monsters, he was actually excited and actively wanted to sleep with one. Speaking of monster fucking, we get unique jackalope monster anatomy as well. As with all the books in this series, L.Evaland never fails to deliver the heat.
I loved the banter between the two and while the story has a light-hearted tone, there are heavier moments. Hotdog lost his legs in a war, he sadly has attracted men in the past who have taken advantage of him, on top of dealing with his shitty conservative family. With Hopper, however, he finds love and space where he can be his true self without any worry.
I enjoyed seeing Chris and Ollie again! I love those two and I’m curious to know what is happening with Charlie and Cupid. This story has a lot to unravel, and I’m excited for what is to come. While the story ends with HEA for our couple, the overarching story still continues. Can't wait for Axel's story next.

This book is suffering from an identity crisis. You have a main character who is just an odd mix of everything the author could think to throw together as traits:
- a recently cut off spoiled politician’s kid
- also a war veteran
- a double amputee
- happy to be an amputee, but also doesn’t like to accept help when needed
- gay, twink, cross dresser, drag queen?
- looking for love but sleeps around carelessly
- loves otaku culture (anime), but his drag queen persona is Annie Mae?
- into daddy/princess role play
- mentions of conversion therapy and past abuse
It’s just such an eclectic mix of attributes to add to a character without making any of them particularly stand out that it makes no sense in the story.
Our secondary character is a rancher/cowboy monster with the attributes of a rabbit/antelope that is another hoshposh of traits thrown together.
- ancient monster but speaks like a stereotypical uneducated rancher constantly using the word “ain’t”.
- a triple amputee
- Once again, old as hell but is still a virgin for some reason.
- Rough around the edges and dominant, but submissive and shy in the bedroom.
- Love language is making peanut butter sandwiches?
- mentions of past loss, bullying, and abuse
The nonexistent plot is also a mess of incongruence without much happening.
I may just be spoiled by Lily Mayne’s monsters. I keep hoping to find another series of interesting otherworldly monsters and their love matches. Sigh….

I'm so sad. I wanted to read this and I really wanted to enjoy it but I'm out. One word... Daddy. The thought of Hopper and Daddy combined made Hotdog Robert come hard. I'm so sorry to L. Eveland if they don't go down that road but I can't even with that kink anymore. I came to this without reading Hearts and Halos. So there were some details I didn't know, like Robert's proclivity for drag and Charlie's kidnapping. That loss of context is a bit of a problem but not as much as the daddy.
I want to say that there was more than one thing in the warnings that L. provided that appealed to me the dual amputee MC element in particular. But this is an author who might be able to do mentions of conversion therapy properly, it is a hard one to work out the limits for but can be a brilliant piece of character if done properly. I really liked what we saw of Hopper, we meet him at an extremely low point but he was still perceptive of another's pain. He is a healer with a gruff outer shell and I like it. He is something of a change of pace when it comes to the Monsters (assuming Cupid is as I thought). I like Robert, he is hurting and fighting agoraphobia and his own demons. They have the promise to be a push-and-pull couple, something akin to enemies-to-lovers but not quite. I will probably come back to this eventually. Sometimes I have more patience for uncomfortable sexual situations than others. And I think I need to or at least really, really want to read Hearts and Halos first.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review. I usually wouldn't review an ARC (or any book) I've DNF'd this early but I am this time because I wanted to like this so much.

I really enjoyed this latest installment in the Monsters in my Bed series. It also involved one of my favourite, but not often seen, tropes, grumpy x grumpy. Both Hopper and Robert (Hot Dog) have a chip on their shoulders, but deep down they both just want someone to need them, and they do this for each other.
For some weird reason, even though he was described in earlier books, I always imagined Robert as a bigger man. I never thought of him as twink size. Maybe it's because he was always a bit of a miserable jerk, but my mind's eye saw him as a large man (obviously my brain ignored any attempt by the author to describe him in the first three books!) haha!
Lassos and Lace, like the other books in the series, has it's side story of action that introduces a few more possible lead characters for future books!
I would not recommend reading this series out of order, as each book builds on to the next. A lot of background information on characters and events is assumed in each book, and although there is some explanation, it really is taken for granted that you've read the earlier books and so know 'who's who in the zoo'. So if you haven't started this series yet, go back to 'Kissed by the Krampus' and go from there. You won't be sorry.
For those that have read the previous 3 books, you won't be disappointed with Hot Dog's story.

I enjoyed this fun cowboy inspired addition to this monster romance series. It was great to get some physical disability rep (limb differences) from both the main character and his love interest and I liked that the author made it affect them differently which avoided stereotypes.
Bit too much smut for me, but thats a me issue.
There is a continuing storyline in this series that was initially minor in the first couple books however is a lot more prominent with this one, even with the switching locations, romantic pairings and points of views each book.

I loved this book! Learning more about Robert and his beautifully tragic backstory! His history as well as hoppers mesh so well but also create an amazing storyline. I loved learning about the dragons and how they have time have special diets! I can't wait for more about Noah? Ben? And axel! Yes please axel!! Also maybe Kaito? He seems like a fantastic Dom I want to know!!

Roberts growth throughout the book was perfect and Hopper is perfect for him🤍 I loved the ranch and dragons and how Robert just fit there.

This book has so many amazing things going on in it, I will probably sound like a paid advertisement I loved it so much and I’m sorry for that but I promise I’m not lol. L. Eveland is definitely becoming one of my favorite authors though, they keep hitting me with these richly designed emotionally intelligent characters that struggle with real problems like PTSD and disability, in this case double and triple amputation, where I don’t feel like this is something someone added for diversity sake but for true representation written by disabled kin or someone that loves and possible cares for kin. I won’t speculate beyond that, an author’s private life is their business, but I will say that I appreciate the representation immensely.
Both Robert and Hopper struggle with their amputations and the things that go along with amputations differently but similarly in a way that feels so authentic and the chronic pain aspects (where I have experience) are written so realistically that I felt that kinship. And like in the previous three books, there was beautiful mental health representation, the aforementioned PTSD was depicted as having come from multiple situations (war, conversion therapy, parental abuse, childhood bullying) and there was also agoraphobia, anxiety, and while it wasn’t said explicitly, depression too. All tastefully done, all very realistic.
And I don’t want anyone reading this to be like oh, wow this book sounds really heavy. That’s the beauty of L. Eveland’s writing to me, they absolutely touch on heavy topics but they balance it out with adoring partnerships (even if it takes a bit to get there), spicy steamy scenes, and some really hilarious humor — this one in particular leaned heavily on the humor and it really worked.
Beyond this point is minorly spoiler-y content so I'm gonna hide the rest below with a see more thingy. the TLDR is you should read this book!

Yes, this author had me at Brokeback Bunny!
L Eveland has such a way with these characters and their dialogue.
I’m talking about a traumatized group of vets, four survivors of a IED blast in Afghanistan, that destroyed their convoy. It’s left one with debilitating PTSD, one a double amputee, one whose life is scrambled, and a Chaplain who’s lost his faith.
Each has his own story in which he‘s met a being , a monster, and fallen in love. The themes flowing through each romance has explored what defines a monster, the military that push for experimentation on paranormals, on orders to war or being’s because of their unique abilities?
Mind you this is an alternate version of the world, with a rift.
The themes are well written, the characters beautifully executed. Especially here.
The human character is one Robert “Hotdog “ Smith. He’s a double amputee, having lost both legs in the blast. Taylor has written layer upon layer for Hotdog.
We go through his depression, his inability to leave his house. His frustration with his prosthetics, that not enough rehab, etc, reddened stumps, all makes him believable. But Robert becomes more so when we see that he’s loves to wear lace.
And so much more. What an amazing character. What a revelation before us.
And equal to him is a stunner of the Monster of the book.
Robert and friends have traveled to Jackalope Ranch. I don’t know how many have seen a so called touristy thing from out west called a Jackalope. Jackrabbit and an antelope combined.
Here it’s real. The being is a jacqeroi, Hopper Meadows, owner of the ranch. With a surprise of a herd!
He’s bitter about humans for good reason, an amputee himself, and has a devastating history.
Everything about him, Robert , and this story is moving, emotionally charged, sensitively handled considering the elements, and so well written.
Two men with missing limbs, both with memories of the past that haunt them. Eveland ‘s story lets both slowly start to trust and understand each other first, then move forward with a relationship, along with a ranch and land full of magical creatures and surprises.
I just love this story and couple.
And the author.
I’m so hooked.

-the setting is SO good
-not to be nasty but the cover is an abomination. so sorry. the alt cover is much better.
-can't say i've ever read a jackalope romance before but.......first time for everything ig. HATE that the big rabbit man's name is Hopper though. I hate that big time.
-why is his name hotdog :( even as a nickname that's....bad :( even when I heard the reason he's called hotdog I still hated it :(
-the pet names in this were suuuuuper cute
-i LOVED these characters together, this one definitely felt the most fleshed out. the author says these characters were the easiest to write so far and you can really tell.
-the way the human characters develop in this series is really interesting bc in the first and second books I really did not get a sense for them at all even though they played decently large parts. i can't tell if that's due to the writing or due to the reader in this case
-gender exploration + drag stuff + some BDSM, very cute very fun
-hotdog/robert kept referring to him losing his legs as "the best thing that ever happened to him" and it's like KIND of a joke but also kind of not and I just cannot imagine what a real amputee would say about that? it's possible the author IS an amputee and I'm totally off base here, but if they're not I have a LOT of follow up questions. like yeah that could be true i guess. i don't know. who am I.

Nope
This one was a nope from me. Nothing about the kinks, or the pet names, or even the writing itself. It was the characters. It was the anime referencing. The sprinkling of Japanese words instead of saying the character spoke in Japanese. I understand that it's totally mainstream now but using random Japanese words like we're reading some 2007 fanfiction.net fanfic is just not it for me.
Not to mention Robert. Not that we saw much of him in the first few books, except to learn he was on his way to being a recluse, but I never once got a sense that he was not only gay, but flamboyantly so. His character came totally out of left field for me and it was jarring. As for Hopper, I think he's the least interesting love interest yet. I didn't feel any compulsion to get to know him better. And I think each villain storyline keeps getting weaker. Parker was a great villain. Father Lott was eh. He was okay. Leroy and or Senator Smith? I couldn't give a rats ass about them. Leroy was a typical betray-because-he-didn't-get-what-he-wanted kind of story and the senator was a homophobic prick with a control problem.
I'm really disappointed by this book and I really hope the cringey anime references don't continue because I like this series, but I can't subject myself to that.

Robert comes from a very wealthy and powerful family with his father being a senator. Robert never felt like he fit in with his family so instead of his family's plan for him, he runs away to get a job selling hot dogs in for the pro baseball team. Then he joins the military where he makes friends who become his new family. An IED explosion claims both of his legs and Robert returns home. His parents are pleased to have a wounded veteran in the family give him an allowance to live on. Robert is struggling with PTSD and ends up being unable to leave his help. Then one of his friends gets in trouble and Robert comes along to the rescue but not as Hot Dog but as Annie a drag queen. Now his friend Charlie and Cupid,the monster he fell in love with are planning to go to the ranch where someone is taking care of their pet dragon. Annie can't resists dragons and agrees to go on the road trip. However when Charlie and Cupid go through the vale, Robert has to stay behind on Jackalope Ranch. Hopper the owner of the ranch is a monster from across the vale and looks like a human jackalope. Hopper is unfriendly and rude and hates most people. However he is the sexiest man that Robert has ever seen and being near dragons is a dream come true.

Lassos and Lace is another great book in the Monster In My Bed series. Hot Dog (aka Robert) has been a side character in the previous books; he played a particularly important roll in book three. But now he's front and center, and the author did an excellent job bringing him more into focus. There are strong hurt/comfort themes in this story. I thought the author did an excellent job of sensitively engaging with the topic of Robert's amputations and his feelings toward his prosthetic legs, while absolutely not letting that be all there was to the character.
This story is full of wonder. I loved the description of the dragons and the ranch itself. The author shows ranching is hard work and can be lonely. Being a monster making a life in the human world is complicated and rife with misunderstanding. But this story is also light hearted. Hopper as the name for a surly cowboy jackalope (part jackrabbit, antelope horns, all man) was a brilliant move. This was another excellent story!

I loved this so much!
This was one of those books that’s so good that you have a book hangover from it. I read this, staying up wayyy too late to finish it and was so sad when it was over. I’m going to keep my review short because the first one I wrote shortly after reading it tended more towards and gushing love letter to the book lol. So, with brevity and no gushing in mind (well not the verbal kind anyway hehe), this book is fantastic on so many fronts. It has complex characters who are flawed and know it but are perfect because of how imperfect they are. Hopper was totally not a nice guy to be around initially and I wanted to hate him but then he’d see Robert’s pain or try (not always effectively) to do something nice and it would become crystal clear that he was a person who’d been hurt over and over and had developed a hard, crusty outer shell in an attempt to keep himself safe. Similarly, Robert could be a touch quick in his assumptions and was often prideful to the point of hurting himself but he too was just someone who was hurt from a lifetime of emotional wounds (some small some big but all just as damaging in the long run). Together, once they stopped holding onto their carefully built walls they were so sweet together. I actually fell in love with Hopper’s soft, sweet side and his true vulnerability yet willingness to go all in even if it meant getting hurt. Add in dragons to all that and I was in book heaven. I do desperately want to know what’s happening next though so I guess now I’ll just wait impatiently for the next book!

Lassos and Lace is the fourth book in the Monsters in My Bed series. This series can be read as standalones, but I think it is best to read it in order otherwise it’s just not as enjoyable. There is an overarching series plot that is still continuing after this book, but the main characters do have their HEA.
Ever since we met Hotdog in the first book I’ve wanted him to have his happy ever after. I had no idea that happy ever after would come in the form of a Jackalope named, wait for it, Hopper. When you have two MCs named Hotdog (Robert) and Hopper, there is no surprise that the banter and chemistry between the two of them would be on fire. There were a lot of sensitive issues that this book dealt with, but I thought the author did a fabulous job with it. I was really interested in how the author incorporated power dynamics and care/comfort in the relationship between Hopper and Robert. Their relationship had some bumps on the road, but overall it was extremely sweet and heartwarming. I’m very excited for the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this one in this series as well- how could I not? There is disability rep AND learning how to ride and care for dragons? Fantastic.
Robert has decided to give up the name Hot Dog, which was semi-confusing, but people change.
I thought Hopper was a good fit for Robert. I really enjoyed that he too had lost limbs, but found better fitting prosthetics so he could function. He knows how to stick to his limits and soak in a bath when he needs to.
I find it really hard to believe that Hopper had never had sex in his older age (175? something magically ridiculous) and then jumped Robert and had a life bond thing going on in like a week. L Eveland could have take the choice to make him Demi or somewhere on the ace scale. It felt like it fit Hopper and felt like a missed opportunity.
I wish it was longer so we could expand more on Robert- an avid gamer/drag queen settling down on this ranch but I think L Eveland wanted to have a reveal with it in later books in the series.

This story is part of a series, and while the romance can stand alone, it’s well worth checking out the previous books, if you haven’t already, for context on the world the characters inhabit and some of the characters themselves. I liked the premise for this story a lot and thought there was a strong balance of romance, chemistry, plot, character development, and world building. We get to know the characters as individuals, understand the elements of their pasts that have led them to the places (literal and metaphorical) they are now, and see their dynamic develop, against the backdrop of a world full of wonder, monsters, and perils that are entirely the product of human actions. Robert and Hopper have a lot to offer each other, and it’s good to see them find their way. I’m also super curious as to forthcoming events of the overall series, and looking forward to the next installment.

Might be nice to be rubbed the right way! Robert/Hot Dog is a Vet, double amputee who is abandoned then used by his family for political advantage. He finally leaves his family and seeks independence which turns into isolation. His friends keep an eye on him and he appreciates the support.While his friends are on a quest, he bravely stays on a ranch hoping to see some dragons. Hopper, is his grouchy distant host who rubs him the wrong way. Robert is scheduled to stay on the ranch a week, does he take to ranch life? Can he make friends with Hopper? There are things going outside of Robert's perception of his life. Lots of mystery and excitement. Life as he. knows it is a bit different than the reality going on around him. The author does an excellent job expanding the lives of Robert, Hopper and the ranch. Delightful story, well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

April 25, 2023DNF @69% ... I think I'm done with this series. I was excited to find a new monster series, and was even able to get past the obvious concept-clone with the worldbuilding features that mimic Lily Mayne's Monstrous series. I actually really enjoyed the 2nd book in particular, but the third was more "meh" and this one... smh. I just couldn't go on after I realized how bored I was and how much I was forcing it to keep reading. One complaint, but it's the second biggest one (after, you know, boredom with the actual storytelling) is that while the monsters are all described as being physically quite different than humans, the actual... interactions/reactions, especially in this one, just felt completely human. Like, there was no sense of "other" beyond noting the physical differences, and... yeah. I'm glad others are enjoying the series and I wish the author well, but I'm going to look elsewhere for my monster fun from here on out.

If you've enjoyed this series so far, you're very much going to like this book as Robert (Hotdog) finally gets his HEA! At the end of the previous book, Robert was on a road trip to Wyoming with Cupid and Charlie. C & C were reunited with Cupid's dragon and went through the Tear so Cupid could resign his position, leaving Robert with Hopper, the owner of a dragon ranch. Robert and Hopper's introduction isn't exactly a smooth one, but the two men quickly find themselves drawn to each other.
This book had a bit of everything - dragons, attempted kidnappings, hot bedroom scenes and sweet men looking for their other half. It was well paced and full of great characters! Robert and Hopper got their HEA but the ongoing plot line with other characters makes me eager for the next book in the series!

After hearing about a dragon ranch, Hotdog, AKA Robert Smith, is determined to go along. After all dragons are the best. When he meets Hopper Meadows, he is not so sure how it will all work as Hopper has a bit a chip on his shoulder. Something like that never stopped Robert before and it will not now. Soon, he finds that Hopper is more than the gruff exterior, but he comes with secrets as does Robert.
Robert makes no excuse for being gay, a cross dresser, sassy, and an amputee. Hopper finds himself drawn to the different human. Their conversations made for fantastic reading. The plot was amazing involving a thirty-year-old vendetta. Of course, Robert’s family adds a few issues as well. Filled with action, adventure, and lots of heat, Lassos and Lace also reminds us that amputees are just like everyone else. With an amputee in the family, we need more of that.

3 stars. I like the author but this was not one the better books of the series.
Hotdog or Robert is not my favourite character and he didn't seem to do much for a lot of the book while everyone else worked. This book seemed to be mainly sex interspersed with occasional adventure, and given that it was about dragons and that Robert was excited to see them, there was very little of him getting out to see them.
Also I think there's inconsistency of the age of Robert - he says he's 25 even though he joined the army at 18 when he got injured, and for other people in the series that was 10 years ago, so he should be at least 28.
Writing still good but if you're expecting the adventure that are in the previous books, it's more about the sex.

In order to read this book, you need to first suspend reality. After I wrapped my head around a walking, talking Jackalope, I started to get into the story. The book was well-written and had genuine emotion and connection. The characters were well-developed, likable, and relatable. Robert was at times sassy and fiery and at other times adorable and just lovely. Hopper was a gentle giant, very lovable under all his grumpiness. I liked the interactions with the MC’s and the other characters, especially Ryder and Honor and his Grinnie. The MC’s had a deep connection and their chemistry was strong and passionate. Being this was my first time reading a book from this author, I am looking forward to reading the whole series and any other works available. I ended up loving this quirky, steamy romance.

I love the dedication to the jackalope sugar Daddy wannabes and I want one, too! Robert(Hotdog) from the previous books stays at Hopper's, a Jacqeroi monster, ranch to see the dragons. Who would have thought a fluffy, white bunny tail sticking out of some guy's pants would be such a turn on? Robert and Hopper are both amputees and they fit together like a peanut butter and a spoon. With Hopper's anatomy, things are really hot and soon Robert's singing "Cowboy, take me away" and " Save a horse, ride a cowboy". As is becoming typical for her books, these guys get a HEA but there is unfinished business in the epilogue for past book friends. I love all her monster/ human combos but this grumpy/ grumpier combo is the best! I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

The romance between Hopper and Hotdog turned out to be full of lighthearted banter despite everything that has happened to each of them in their lives. Hopper is our monster who has been keeping to himself for a long time on his ranch. He is not looking for love to say the least. Hotdog ends up there with him is quite enthusiastic about maybe getting a monster of his own! Hopper is not an easy one to crack, but once his affections come out for Hotdog, he is all in and is quite tender and sweet! Both of these men have disabilities and a lot of chronic physical and emotional pain. Although in a different way they still seem to know just what the other needs. Sweet, Spicy Monster fun with a romantic story!

Who'd have thought we'd get a wonderful romance with loads of details about dragons and jackalopes? I loved the world building the author gave me here. Then, we have Robert and Hopper who start out as part of an enemies to lovers trope but their attraction gets them together pretty quickly which was fine by me. Both these characters need someone who will accept them as they are, unlike Robert's family and those who've betrayed Hopper in the past and they recognize that in each other and because they are both really lovely and caring deep down, they start to help and open up to each other. The plot lines about the vendetta and Charlie and Cupid were great, but it was the characters of Robert and Hopper that held me here.

A wonderful book that almost seamlessly joins the previous ones.
Hopper who is one of the grumpiest characters I've encountered so far and Hotdog/Robert who we already know from the first books. A monster who nurses dragons on his ranch and a human who wrestles with inner demons. What could possibly go wrong? After all, both have to mourn the loss of various extremities. Plus an age difference rarely found and...um...anatomical peculiarities are ultimately a recipe for hot encounters (soooo hot!) and growing feelings, of course.
For me not quite as fantastic as the first three books but still definitely worth reading.

I’ve got an arc from Gay romance review, all thoughts are mine !
I’ve really liked the universe and I think I should go back and read the previous books because we have glimpses of the other couples and I’m super curious!
Robert was a fun disaster to follow through! He suffer from a lot of trauma and he being with Hopper helped him healing.
They kind of saved each other and I liked that part of their relationship!
Hopper is an asshole at first, untrusting of humans in general, seeing him falling for Robert was super entertaining. I would have liked more of a slow burn, but they were cute !
I just didn’t enjoy the daddy/princess stuff, but that’s a me problem!

It’s hard to put my thoughts into writing as I word how I felt about this book. It’s not terrible and not the worst book I have ever read, the start was great I loved the idea of a dragon ranch, and a broody owner who prefers dragons to people. But then it started to get confusing and there was things put in this book I thought was unnecessary. Robert was a good main character and I loved that he was able to be himself around Hopper but it felt very little character development and very insta-lovey. I would have preferred this book to have stuck to it’s plot rather than stem of for other things which didn’t make sense in the end.
