The Oregon Territory village of Brookside sees further violence as the lone constable fights to keep law and order in the second novel in the continuing series of life during Oregon’s wild frontier period.
The year is 1848. The place is Brookside, Oregon Territory. The great migration from east to west is just getting underway following favorable comments on Oregon weather, farming, and ranching land in the eastern press. There are those in the Brookside Valley who are dead set against the immigrants. There are those who favor the movement. And there are those who take advantage of the newcomers. Worst of all, good people die.
The Brookside constable’s office is a one-man affair, and Constable Kennedy is alone as the population explodes, crime explodes, and he is denied the ability to hire deputies. Some of his time is taken up by the delightful Widow Creighton.
The one man standing in the way of Constable Kennedy getting help is beaten, robbed, and killed, and Kennedy is blamed. It’s a big question whether he will survive this attack on his reputation.
I really enjoyed newcomers. it was filled with real people that I could relate to . It had several ongoing plots that kept it interesting. I found it hard to put down. It reminded me of the time I spent in the area where this action took place. It was just like being there. It was a very good read and somewhat different from the usual western. I highly recommend this book.
This story is a mirror of small town politics, prejudice, greed, violence, jealousy, and just plain stubbornness. There is also a little romance. This author has some problems with word choices. Through and though, scar and scary, trail and trial, etc.
I really enjoys reading this novel by Johnny Gunn. It is essentially the story of a small Sheriff/Constable trying to keep peace in small town. While fighting the killers and robbers, he finds romance with a beautiful widow.
Another great book by this author. Adventure, crimes, love and jealousy make for a great read. Super story line with great characters and lots of action. Would highly recommend this book and all others written by this author.
This was a very good book. Mr Gunn is a precise writer. He weaves a great storyline and builds likeable characters. I have enjoyed all of his books. Recommended!
