The Dexter Brothers #4

Always My Comfort

Rate this book
He's Jaxon Dexter—the rival…and my baby daddy.

I made a big mistake. In my defense, I had just caught my boyfriend cheating on me, and I'd had a few too many shots of tequila on an empty stomach.

But when I try to refill my birth control three months later, I realize just how badly I've messed up.

I’m pregnant.

And the father? He’s that guy from the bar: the new pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, the one that’s supposed to replace my ex.

My ex isn’t going down without a fight, even if that means dragging me and Jaxon into his mess.

But one thing to know about Jaxton Dexter…you don’t touch what belongs to him. And whether I like it or not, I’m his.

I DNF this book, it felt super rushed and at first I went with it because I assumed it would be another spicy story without plot but it ended up not having spice or plot. It was an instant love story, the characters had no chemistry and readers barley even get to know Logan(FMC). I didn’t like how the characters were written, Logan was my least favorite, I found her to be super annoying and she kept crying every time there was a slight inconvenience. Jax was almost worse, he took a wasted girl home had sex with her then didn’t notice she was pregnant for the good while that they dated.
I don’t even know where I heard about this book but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I honestly wanted to Dnf this book, but I just couldn’t let myself given how short it is. It was a TikTok rec and the videos were misleading. There were very obvious plot holes, for example the time line. In the very first chapter we learn she’s pregnant. The next few chapters are supposed to be set one year in the past, during this time period the FMC gets pregnant. Then we jump to the present, which is again one year later than those chapters, but she’s only three months pregnant? I reread several times assuming I was reading wrong or misunderstanding, that does not seem to be the case. This book is likely self published, because I did notice some fundamental errors such as words missing from sentences. Overall I thought the plot had some good potential but the pacing was off, and the story just fell flat in a few places. I’m only giving it one star because I feel like those errors/holes probably should’ve been caught before it was released.

I had to DNF this book the same day I started reading despite how short it is. I saw on TikTok and decided to give it a try because I love baseball and sports romances. This one was awful because it was so obvious this author had never done an ounce of research. If you are going to write a book about a baseball player, watch a baseball game. There is no such thing as a referee blowing a whistle in baseball. If you are going to write about a pregnancy, then look up how long a pregnancy lasts. The woman pregnant was 3 months along but the flashback to the one-night stand was a year prior? It just doesn’t make any sense. I feel like a pre-teen wrote and released this. I would highly suggest researching the plot topics you are writing about and having a publisher/editor review prior to releasing next time.

So you’re telling me the flashbacks of the one time they slept together are supposed to be a year ago and in the present she’s only three months pregnant? I had to go back and check multiple time to make sure I wasn’t reading it wrong. For once I would like to see a surprise pregnancy where the fmc isn’t super immature about it. They’re grown adults. It’s like all the braincells magically disappear lol.

Cringey ,cringey , and oh CRINGEY. If I never hear the word sweetheart again it will be too soon.

They were together for a month and then they were confessing their undying love for each other, and how they wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other it was weird. If their relationship had progressed over more than a 150 pages, then this could have worked, but everything was going too fast.

Honestly this story had a lot of potential but I feel like the pace was too fast. And it wasn’t really a plot It was hard to finish

I really wanted to like this and I love the concept, it’s right up my alley but it has this un-flushed-out-vibe. There’s an overarching plot line with a decent timeline but certain scenes seem like they were edited greatly and connect to next perfectly then others don’t. Like what was the point of throwing in a bit on Logan’s teacher life only to have her quit but that never gets explained to Jaxon? Like they’re having a kid together and relying only on his athletic job is a rocky plan. Or the whole “the ex-boyfriend is the villain and gets his own pov moment to hash out a diabolical plan” bit gets some light but you never see enough of the press playing into that prior to the chapter or anything with the team dynamics to get a feel how the ex and Jaxon work with the group? overall this gives a bit of a vibe when I used to flush out really well done paragraphs or pages in my essays then throw in random bits to make it “flow” enough that it’s coherent. I definitely feel like this could have benefited from at least a minimum another 200-300 pages because only 178 to get this all in is where I felt it was lacking

This was a good cute book I probably would’ve made it a 4 if there was spice. The writing wasn’t my favorite but the plot was good. I love how he protected her. I loved their relationship it was so sweet. I feel like it had the potential to be a longer 5 star book it was just rushed and the writing was a little messy but add some spice and fix that at it would be great.

Great story!!

This is the 55th book in this fascinating series. This is a well written sports romance with emotions, humour, witty banter, intrigue, family, friendships, and love which all leads to a poignant and entertaining page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Yikes! I read this book because of tik tok, but it was horrific. The timeline was off, it was very rushed with a lot of "filler" chapters that you can skip and still know everything that is happening in the book because they repeat everything over and over again. I am very shocked this is the 4th book of a series!

if it was longer I would have DNFed

The writing is lazy. It’s easy to tell this was written by someone with no sports background. No research was put into it. Illogical inconsistency. You can tell the writer had no background or knowledge about sports, the braves or Atlanta.

1. The Atlanta braves are in Cobb so he wouldn’t be driving down town to get to the stadium. Also why don’t you use the name of the stadium at all? Kind of lazy.

2. Is Honey Magnolia a town or the name of his parents ranch?

3. How does he switch down football to baseball?

4. Did you research MLB before making the main character break the record for fast pitch in the league? And then you have him play second string behind a poor player?

5. You’re telling me his I madly inlove with this girl but doesn’t pay enough attention to notice she’s pregnant for a whole month but his sister clocks it almost immediately?

6. What is going on with the accent. And why are you only dropping G? What is swin’? Goin’ to? It’s a lazy and inconsistent way to show an accent.

7. Why is he always listen to Luke Combs?

8. How does Richard cheat so fast when she was literally right behind him getting home?

9. Why is Jaxson sleeping with Logan immediately after mentioning she was to intoxicated to drive and he was stopped drinking and hour prior. Seem predatory.

10. The story is really rushed in the last 30 pages Richard goes from not reaching out to Logan for months after the break up to trying to drive her off the road.

11. Going back to not researching MLB. Buying a team happens alot longer than an hour. How does someone by rhetoric team and make it to the locker room before bid is even open?

The book could have been so much better if there was more research and planning. I spent more time trying to figure out the inconsistency than actually being taking by the story.

I was recommended this book via booktok.

It’s a very short read less than 200 pages and as a fan fiction reader this didn’t deter me. I was hoping that with the limited pages the story didn’t have time to waste with unimportant things. That it should realize that everything said and done needs to be intentional. However, that is not the case. The dialogue can be very cringey and it’s insta-love

Overall it’s a very nothing book. I don’t particularly love or even like any of the characters. They lacked consistency and motive. There’s really no conflict either. Fade to black, no spice.

Jaxon is alright he had a certain big protective cowboy charm. He’s this charming baseball playing cowboy who needs to fix her problems and make her feel safe. He doesn’t want a white picket fence unless it’s with her. Although there is one line where he talks about the pregnancy and said he would have left and been rageful if it was anyone but Logan and I just saw that as a red flag. Like being rageful toward an accident doesn’t sound like this kind man who basically fell in love with Logan so you have to consider it’s shallow.

Also there is a pov switch to our antagonist and although I don’t think I’ve ever read that before I never want to again. Really weird take. There’s also an attempt at a high speed chase that was really muddled and hard to follow. It was an attempt to build stakes but not once was I concerned and I re read the chapter a few times just trying to visually map it out. Honestly you could take out the entire scene and it wouldn’t have changed the book. This high speed chase was a mild inconvenience at best.

Not the worst that I’ve read but I would not be recommending this.

a quick read

Truly a very quick read. I wish I had paid attention to the page count prior it would’ve made the aboutface make more sense. Jaxon went from not wanting a girlfriend or settling down to saying he was in love. He said he wouldn’t have brought her to the wedding if she wasn’t it for him but that’s not originally why he asked. I find it hard to believe that she grew up in the south and knew that black was bad luck to wear to a wedding but would show up to the rehearsal dinner and to meet him family in a white sweater when she’s trying not to stand out. Overall I did like this book and the ending for the Dexters. I’m sure if this hadn’t been the first one I read I would’ve enjoyed getting to see the other brothers and their wives. I feel like they really skimmed over the dad and his “acceptance” when it seemed to be the main reason for the whole book. I’m glad they got their HEA.

The story it’s self had so much potential. I’m confused because the story starts with flashbacks to the past to introduce everything since this is the last book of the series. Then it flashes forward, but still 1year ago to their night of meeting at a bar/one night stand after her pos ex cheated. Yet then flash forward 1year later to the present and it said 5months ago they had the one night stand and she was 4months pregnant. It makes zero sense. He was the only one she had been with the entire year it’s just a mistake the author made. The story it’s self could have easily been more. If it weren’t for the mistakes I would have rated maybe 3-4stars.

I loved the happy ending. Absolutely loved it.

So she said that her and richard broke up 4 months ago so technically speaking it was last year but in reality its only been 4 months I was a little skeptical from the start because of her list rule or whatever anyway i didnt really care that much it was ok for me but she's an adult why do i have to read about and adult who's pregnant with this mans child witholding this information cuz she's a chicken?? She then comes up with some dumb excuse like because "she wanted revenge" i would even appreciate it if she thought "i dont wan to ruin his career"and this just hit me but did she drop her job expecting this one night stand to accept her with open arms??? Are you being serious i dnf and i dont think i can

Beautiful Story

This couple met in a slightly unusual way, had a one night stand that ended with both of them FEELING like it meant more than that.

She ended up pregnant from their one night together and in the end it ended up being the best thing to happen to them both.

She ended up with a wonderful man to call her own after ending a terrible relationship and he found love when he didn’t think he was anywhere close to being ready.

This relationship build was so simple and beautiful. I liked that they never broke up or had strife with each other on the page.

They had a couple of minor arguments but they were silly and cute.

If you like a slow, simple story about a couple who finds each other in an unexpected way this book is for you ❤️

2.5 ⭐️
This was a super sweet book with low angst, closed door sex scenes and a cinnamon roll hero. The story itself was fine but there were a few things that drove me nuts…
1) Baseball is a central element in the plot, but the author got several terms wrong…like referees instead of umpire, arena instead of stadium
2) The hero Jax is “southern” and the author obviously wanted to hammer that fact into our heads with his dialogue…southerners do not drop the “g” off of EVERY WORD!
3) Some things were just completely nonsensical…like the heroine quitting her job without knowing how the hero is going to react to her news

Romance with a side of incorrect sports

The idea of the book was super cute. The pacing went really fast and so their love story seemed super rushed. Writing a sports romance is hard especially if it’s a sport you’re not familiar with. It was about baseball, the MMC is a pitcher and said he had a good game but the score was 17-15….thats not a good game then he talked about how coach was gonna put him in at halftime….I’ve never heard of halftime in baseball. It was also just too rushed for me it made no sense on why it had to be that rushed, there are a lot of one night stand pregnancy books that are just better.

DNF

I hate to give a one star but this just didn't make sense.
Logan is 3 months pregnant but the flashbacks of conception are from a year ago?

ALSO, the reason why I didn't finish, is because the female main character was extremely drunk when she asked for sex and the male main character had been on water for an hour, seemingly sober.

Definitely not my kind of book. I tried to read this after DNFing the previous book in the series but no luck.

This may be a good book for some but not me unfortunately.

I really wanted to love this book but unfortunately I just didn’t.
It stated off great, likable characters, the story was going great and then it just fell flat.
The overuse of the word Sweetheart made me cringe. I love pet names/nicknames but to say it three times on one page is truly a bit much.
Then there was the instalove factor which I’m just not a fan of. Soulmates and you’ve only gone on a few dates? I’ll love her the rest of my life but only had a one night stand? I don’t mind closed door spice but the story has to be so good you forget it’s not there.

Saw this book on TikTok and decided to give a try. I enjoyed the fast paced and straight to the point aspect. The characters were sweet and as always I enjoyed the found family trope. Logan and Jaxon had a one night stand that resulted in an oops baby. She is scared that that her life isn’t going how she expected and doesn’t know what to expect of Jax. However, she worries in vain because Jax proves to her that he can be the man she needs. And he constantly reassures her that he is there to stay.

I enjoyed the book. It was a very quick read but that is to be expected with it being less than 200 pages. The plot of the book was easy to follow and held my attention. If you are looking for spice, this isn’t the book for you, it’s a happy ending typical romance. My main complaint is that there are multiple typos/missing words that interrupt the flow of the book, which ultimately caused me to reread sentences.

I liked it, but it was also kinda rushed towards the ending. It started off good, the characters were likable, there was enough of a conflict to keep it going. But halfway through everything was resolved and it was kinda just boring. There was an attempt at like a third act conflict but it was like a little blip. Barely counted. I was planning on reading the other books but if this is anything to go by, I probably won’t.

I didn’t finish this book because I read the final score of a baseball game was 17-15 (which can happen, but not often) and you just don’t want that score if your main character is a pitcher like what did he throw 5 innings of 1 run ball only for the other team to put up 14 runs in the remaining 4 innings. If that’s the score of the fictional baseball game, then I’m gonna need the box score with the final lines for each starting pitcher

Taylor Jade is a new author for me so I was ready for anything. What a delightful surprise. Not being a fan of any sports subject fiction, this was a well written, fast paced read that kept me glued from the first to the last page. It had all the ingredients you expect in a romance novel. The bad guy, the good guy, the sweetheart stuck between them, and a happy, loving ending with an unexpected baby. I'll seek out more books now from Ms. Jade.

The romance towards the end was sweet.

The writing style lacked, in my opinion. I really wanted to love this. But the timing progressions were very all over the place and didn't make sense.

I really wanted this to be better than what it was. But unfortunately, it wasn't.

I had higher hopes from tiktok comments and videos. But it just wasn't there for me. :/ The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because I finished the book.

This was honestly an extremely fast read for me. I gave it three stars because it was too quick, but I still equally loved major parts of it. I felt like the majority of the book was rushed. I loved Jaxson, but it felt like someone was literally hovering over the authors neck to write this as fast as possible.

The storyline itself - great. I loved the plot and the idea of the book, I just wish I could’ve enjoyed it a little more honestly.

It was a cute, short read. That being said, it was way too fast-paced. I feel like it skipped over information and just rushed the romance. I'm not one for a slow burn, but this needed more depth to it. Also, there were quite a few grammar mistakes that were hard to miss. Overall, it was a cute read.
