Deep by Melanie Bokstad Horev Five Fantastic Stars ✨✨✨✨✨ World Building 🌏🌏🌏🌏🌏 Characters 💁♀️👩🌾🙍♀️🙍♂️🙍 Storytelling 📖📖📖📖📖
Wow. How I loved reading Deep. This is the first time I have read a novel by Horevs. Her World Building was so detailed without being bogged down with trivial useless mindless repetitiveness that most authors do. I could visualise being there.
I came to care for the main characters Rylie and Anna, and the supporting characters as well. For a MMC Rylie isn’t the Alpha type. He is the quintessential Anti Hero. Rylie is the grandson of the President of the colony, but instead of undertaking work to further his interest in the colony, he takes on a job for the benefit of the colony. He blends, he cares, he cries, and isn’t all that brave.
His friend Anna has a dark secret that led to the deaths of Rylies Father, and then the President, his Grandmother. How long can she keep her secret and what will Rylie do when he finds out. As the story progresses, Rylie discovers that there is a dark side of the Deep colony.
Nothing is as it seems. Nothing. When you think you have worked out what is going on, the whole story seems to flip again. I’m trying not to give too much away because I don’t want to ruin your discoveries.
This is an ARC review. I rate the books I read on what they give me, and what lasting impressions I have when I have finished reading. I love to be able to immerse myself in the story, the settings, the characters, to have an adventure in my mind. Melanie ticks all the above. She writes like a well seasoned author but amazingly, this is her second published novel.
Do I recommend this book? I sure do. I will be following this author so I don’t miss out on her next novel.
3.5* I really enjoyed the idea behind this book. An underwater dome where we all now have to live.makes a nice change from the idea of it being in space. Characters were interesting and for a Y.A book this was quite engrossing from the begining. I can see how a younger audience would be pulled in by the theme and quick paced style. My only issue was the last quarter of the book. I felt it was rushed a little and could have been padded out a bit more. The first half built up nicely and had a lot in. While the ending did too it didnt flow for me in the same way. Im Glad to see there will be a second book👍
Many thanks to the author and Booksirens for an ARC in exchange for my honest review
When the Earth becomes uninhabitable, humanity retreats to the depths of the oceans to survive. After generations of living below the surface, discoveries will be made, and many persons will begin to question the actions of those around them. But the truth is so much more complicated than they could have ever imagined.
Wow, I did not see that coming! I'd already been anticipating the twist, had this idea of what was coming, but I failed to predict the truth, and it's a dozy.
Wow! Where do I start? Deep drew me into its depths from the first page or more like the summary. Imagine living underwater in domes? Well, that is where everyone in Deep lives after the world ended. Humans have been living deep in the water in domes for hundreds of years.
Deep reminded me of a few different TV shows like The 100 and even a little bit of Stephen King’s Under the Dome. Deep reminded me of The 100 in many ways but the one that is top on my list is Deep’s releasing. When they release someone in Deep they send their bodies out in the water after their deaths. The 100 floated people when they committed a crime. Floating someone is where they send them out into space without a spaceship or spacesuit.
Deep opens with the death of their president, Ryler’s grandmother, Marna, and her releasing. Just a year before Ryler’s father was released. Ryler and his grandmother were very close. They spent a lot of time together. She taught him so much. Ryler saw something at his grandmother’s releasing that caused him to question her sudden death.
With the help of his friend Anna, they set out to find out why she died so suddenly. Was it her time to go or did someone speed up her death? Ryler will do whatever it takes to find out what really happened to his grandmother.
Their quest leads them down a deep dark path with lots of unanswered questions and twists. They kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know all the answers myself. Will their search for answers bring about their early release?
I love the plot of Deep. I love the world that was created for Deep. I don’t believe I have ever read anything quite like it. I love the whole concept of Deep. I love the idea of people living in domes deep in the water. I love the idea of whole colonies living underwater. I can’t wait for more in this world. I can’t wait for the next book in The Deep Blue Colony series.
I enjoyed reading Deep so much that I would highly recommend it to all dystopian fans! Grab your copy of Deep today for a very intense ride that will keep you hanging on for more!
Loved this book. Was a quick and easy read. Friends to lovers my favorite trope. Kept me interested from the very start. Suspenseful and great twist at the end. I like that the male main character is sensitive, you don't see that often in books. Can't wait to read the next book and find out what happens. Loved all the characters and storyline. I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
A great YA Sci fi adventure. Thousands of people have been living sustainably in an underwater colony for generations. When their charismatic leader dies suddenly within a year of her son being “released” (aka executed) for treason, grandson Ryler and his trio of friends try to solve the mysteries and save the colony. This first book in a series is fast paced and well written. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I loved the setting as it seems a natural next step rather than colonies in outer space. Very Jacques Cousteau and his underwater habitat experiments. A few more details on the size of the dome and how it is sustainable would have been nice. Maybe in the next book?
It’s still needs a good proofread as some editing mistakes have been left in. But these are few and far between. I received an advance review copy from Book Sirens for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Highly recommend.
Wow. Just wow. Deep is a dystopoan story a little outside my normal genres, but is a great read! A group of young adults in an underwater colony grapple with societal pressure and potential colony collapse. If you have read the City of Ember/Sparks books, this is a more grown up, slightly better constructed version.
I received an arc from netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review.
I read Deep in a day if that gives any indication to how much I enjoyed this read.
The story follows Ryler and Anna mostly with chapter being in the POV of one of the two. Red, their mutual friend also makes plenty of appearances and was one of my favorite characters.
We meet Ryler first who is reeling after the death of his grandmother, the president of their colony Deep Blue. For all intents and purposes the official cause of death is old age but Ryler isn't convinced after he catches a glimpse of something that shouldn't be possible.
Teaming up with Anna the two race against time to discover just what the higher ups of the colony are hiding with the help of Red and Anna's younger brother, Pulli.
What they discover will change everything they've ever come to know. Their very world may not be the safe haven they once believed it to be.
I loved the story of this book. It kept me engaged and wanting to keep reading, which is a good thing because some of the chapters feel unfinished which can be frustrating. While in at least one case I believe there is just a sentence missing, in other cases it feels like character make decisions that I as a reader cannot follow, or a chapter will suddenly finish and leave hanging threads. I don't want to give spoilers because I genuinely think other readers will enjoy this story, but for example at one point two characters are following another character when they get distracted by something. After the distraction the chapter ends, no mention of what happened to the original goal of following the first character. Did they lose them? Did they manage to continue following them and see what they were doing? Did the character they were following notice them because of the distraction? The book does not answer these questions. Overall it feels like the book could have done with one more edit. This review may seem quite negative but please note I gave 4 stars and would recommend the book to other readers. The two protagonists feel like real people as do most of the other characters. The only thing I did not enjoy was that one of the protagonists has mysterious backpains, the origins of which are never explained. The relationships between the characters are well established, at least earlier in the book, and I genuinely liked both the protagonists. Overall I enjoyed the book. I definitely want to read the sequel!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
An underwater YA dystopian novel that includes some Divergent and Maze Runner elements, but with its own unique storyline. The world-building is imaginative and hopefully will be expanded in any sequels. Some of the characters could use some more dynamics, but most are likeable at the very least. There are some quirky ones, but these supporting characters are central to the story and I applaud the author for including non typical mainstream characters. There's some surprises near the end that will pull readers back for the next book in this series. Love the cover art!"
I received a free online copy from the author in StoryOrigin.
3.5 stars
A nice book about humanity living in the domes under the sea. I found the idea behind the book very refreshing, since I haven't read many books about the deep sea.
The writing style reminded me of young adult books I would read as a teenager. It was simple, understandable and smooth. Even though I would prefer some poetic prose from books in general, the uncomplicated nature of the book was a good choice for young readers.
The worldbuilding was nice and easy to imagine and understand. Though I am expecting a more extended description from the next books.
I found the beginning of the story a bit dragging and the main story starting too late for my taste. However, I have to be honest that I wasn't expecting the plot twist, and I liked the surprise. The ending wasn't much of a cliffhanger but I felt a bit incomplete and wanting to know more about the characters' well being.
Coming to the characters, I wasn't very satisfied with the main characters. They had some communication issues and would be focusing too much on romance in the middle of a crisis. Again, they are teenagers and their conflicting emotions might be the culprit. Still, some of their inner thoughts made me roll my eyes. Perhaps, I am getting too old for young adult books.
All in all, it was a pretty solid book and will be liked by many young readers in my opinion.
I thank the author for trusting and giving me a chance to read and review this book!
Received as a review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Deep is a mesmerizing, poignant journey for Ryler as the story begins in a raw way as Ryler is dealing with the seismic loss of his grandmother that at the colony's ceremony of releasing of Marna to the vast ocean; Ryler notices something as off of Marna's hair that is only the beginning of the web of secrets of the colony. Soon Ryler and his friends Anna and Alicia are caught in everything from personal family lies consuming Ryler's sanity to a stark agenda by a group willing to over through the community government that could harrowing consequences for the precarious balance that the Deep Blue colony maintains. A profound tale and a highly recommend read.
Great story! Well written - with deep characters. I thoroughly enjoyed how real the undersea city was described, how the mystery was revealed to the characters and how they discovered the solutions to their conflicts and issues. Though there was never a complete solution given in this book and a sequel was hinted at, there was not a cliffhanger ending either. A very enjoyable read!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book delves into the ocean where society survives as the supposed last people on earth. The characters learn of sinister plots and try to save all those they love but have unexpected complications. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters and look forward to continuing their story.
Deep: Dystopian Syfy Survival Action Well written syfy full of secrets, twists, turns, action and adventure! I feel like the character building/backstories were good! Last few chapters of the book really sealed the deal on wanting to read the next in series! The action picked up with a huge plot twist! Can’t wait to see where the story goes!
Deep is a YA dystopian book, the first of the Deep Blue Colony series, and one I definitely recommend. The writing is smooth and pulls you in from the start till finish. It's got a good pace and two POV'S.
Aside the two main characters there's also a good diversity of other characters, a thrilling storyline, dystopian world, interesting and advanced technology and a lot of secrets, betrayals and mysteries. The book had some twists I expected but also some I didn't see coming, which made it all the more fun to read.
Any YA dystopian lovers will adore this book and should definitely check it out!
The best I can say! READ IT - another hit from this author! Very well written and What a fun and exciting read! I couldn't put it down. The mysteries and thriller-like pacing were intriguing and kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the read. I highly recommend this novel. I want to know what happens next already :)
Solid 4! A global disaster so humanity is surviving in the sea (this could happen so how terrifying) Ryler and Anna must uncover who killed his grandmother (President) which leads to secrets and conspiracies .. I DEVOURED THIS👏🏻
Perfect plot twists, surprises, and likable characters! I'm all in on Deep. Five stars! What a great read. I received an ARC from the author and leaving an honest review.
"There’s gotta be more to life than this. Something out there, beyond the ruins of past lives."
Deep by Melanie Bokstad Horev is a thrilling young adult dystopian novel that takes readers on a fast-paced and exhilarating adventure. Set in an underwater dome called Deep Blue, the story revolves around two main characters, Ryler and Anna, as they unravel the secrets of their submerged existence.
The narrative alternates between Ryler and Anna, and as readers delve into their perspectives, they are taken on a journey filled with twists, surprises, and gripping suspense. The challenges and obstacles the characters face become the catalyst for their growth and development, and with each revelation, the plot thickens, leaving readers eager to uncover what lies ahead.
Drawing parallels to acclaimed novels like Hugh Howey's "Wool" and Jeanne DuPrau's "City of Ember," Horev has created a fascinating and mysterious world beneath the ocean's surface. In this submerged society, the air above has become toxic, forcing humanity to adapt and survive within the confines of a glass dome. Within this dome, societal order has been established, but tensions simmer between those in power and those who question their authority.
The colony president's mysterious death sends shockwaves through the community, igniting a sense of unrest and the dangerous pursuit of truth. As more discrepancies and hidden secrets come to light, Anna, her younger brother Pulli, Ryler, and his friend Red band together, forming an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth and evade the dangers that lurk at every turn.
Horev's writing style captures the urgency and intensity of the characters' predicament. The vivid descriptions of the underwater world, along with the her ability to create a palpable sense of tension, immerse readers in the story, making it hard to put the book down. The pacing is spot-on, with action and introspection skillfully balanced, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a deeper level. With its compelling characters and surprising twists, this book will undoubtedly captivate readers of all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an ARC of this book that was published 4/24/23. I’m looking forward to the sequel coming out later this year. 3.75⭐️ Tyler and Anna have lived their whole lives under water after their ancestors retreated below the surface because of humankind killing the Earth. Now, over a hundred years later, they are the last remaining colony underwater and have to figure out the water seeping in issue before their infrastructure is destroyed. There is a murderer loose and trying to get certain individuals in power instead. Ryler, Anna, and Red must keep a low profile while trying to connect the dots and figure out which adults they can trust. With Anna in trouble, they must do the unthinkable to save her from certain death.
***spoilers below****
This dystopian concept was refreshing of a post apocalyptic world. Despite the problem being displayed right away, it was kind of slow paced as we are introduced to each character. The love interest, Anna, was kind of just thrown in as “love of my life” and then a chapter later (what it felt like) we get introduced to a woman around the age of Ryler’s mom that he “has a connection with.” Ryler is later found kissing the older woman and again it doesn’t feel connected with the love interests. The problem solving to break out Anna only works if they know where they are popping up in the ocean. Like they could pop up middle of the ocean and be screwed that way. Very convenient they popped up by land and that they could swim. Also, yeah injecting the bodies to allow oxygen flow whatever, but the outright pressure on the released bodies would simply crush them…

This is a well written and quite believable story. The characters are group of young people, who manage to uncover the hidden truth, as to why they are living under the sea in the Deep Blue Colony. The twist at the end is pure genius, looking forward to the second installment. Edge of the seat reading, and even with the book being classed as young adult readers, it certainly kept this sixty plus year old thrilled to the end.
I don't know how to explain this. This is my first time being an ARC reader and I am not disappointed. I loved everything about this book. It kept me on edge the whole time. First, the beginning got me hooked. The way how they release the criminals and the dead was just innovative and incredible. I admit that Ryler made me angry around some parts but he quickly redeemed himself. Anna, on the other hand, I loved her. I could understand her frustration. I just felt sad that she had to torture herself for years over something that wasn't worth it. And then, there was Viola. She was the executioner of the colony. I expected some parts, like how the surface was populated but I didn't expect Grant's attitude. It was horrible. He just saw his son as his next but when things didn't go as he wished, Viola took the lead and changed the ruling family. It was just messed up. He wanted to leave his son down there and kill him. The only thing he thought about was money. Ryler's way of viewing his father made me overlook his suspiciousness. Second, for the romantic aspect. It's best friends into lovers trope. It took Ryler a kiss with a woman older than him to understand he preferred Anna. 😏 I loved their friendship... Third, there is a thing I loved about the novel: it's how it didn't explain everything. Like how Viola kissed Ryler to distract him from the nightshade. Like how Anna was to be released to the surface because she was smart and they needed smart people I bet Pulli would have followed soon after that. There were were fake numbers too... I bet Bill knows about them. Those parts just leave me thinking. Anyway, overall, this is a five stars read for me. Each time a book keeps me reading, it's a five stars and this one kept me reading.

Overall, I enjoyed **The Deep Blue Colony**. It is a well-written and entertaining novel that is sure to appeal to young adult dystopia fans
Deep is an interesting adventure with a lot of moving pieces. But before I get into my review this story reminded me of City of Embers, I haven't read it but I did watch it. If you liked that story you will definitely like this one. Ok, now that's out of the way, my review.
We have Ryler and Anna as our MMC and MFC. After finishing the book I'm still confused about the age of the characters (though the book is labeled as young adult) even though I have some idea. I got childlike responses mixed in with adult decisions which quite frankly frustrated me. I found myself asking out loud if situations couldn't have been handled better by the pair. The adults seemed no better.
Ryler and Anna's romance felt instantaneous, although they knew each other from childhood their chemistry stilted. They work well together but I would have liked a few more pages where their differences were handled more in depth and realistically.
The pacing for the first half of the book was good but then felt rushed for the second half. It is plenty of information we got throughout the story. Making the story longer to come to a more carefully executed conclusion of the story would have put a cherry on top.
Like Melanie's other book Female Breeders, the greed for power and accomplishments are the driving force behind our villain's decisions and questionable morals. I love a good story where evil does not triumph...sometimes. Hehe
It was a quick read, and enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing more from the supporting characters. Red with his fiery temper and quick retorts and Pulli's inquisitive mind.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
