Cahira "Cat" O'Brien - Beautiful. Wealthy. Mysterious. Deadly. Cat has led a double life for many years, taking her to the top of an elite military group, the ownership of a billion-dollar company, and the life of an assassin, all at the expense of a personal life to call her own.

Cat returns to where it all started in upstate New York to find her sister, but there she also finds an attraction to Eddie Brennan, a contractor with no connections to the worlds Cat typically moves in.
Can she find herself, her family, and a future with Eddie despite her past and Danny's control over her? Is Eddie the calm in the storm?

This book was a bit outside my usual reads, but wow I'm so glad I picked it up. It reads like your favorite action movie, pulling you in from page one with a mysterious start that keeps you hooked. No info dumps, just enough intrigue to make you need to know more.
Cahira, our FMC, is cold, lethal, and trying to escape the life she’s always known. When she accepts an open-ended invite to visit family, she finds a glimpse of something she’s been missing. But, of course, the past doesn’t stay buried, and soon enough, danger follows, putting everyone at risk.
The world-building? So well done. It feels real, immersive, and easy to get comfortable in. The pacing is solid. No dragged-out moments, just smooth, effortless storytelling that made this a fast read. Plus, the mix of Irish culture, complicated family dynamics, and a secret organization? Chef’s kiss. Some character backgrounds remain a mystery (for now), and I’m definitely coming back for future books.
Stepping outside my usual genres for this one was absolutely worth it. If you love action, intrigue, and a lead who can definitely hold her own, I highly recommend picking this up!
Thanks to the author for the message on my bookstagram offering a copy for an honest review.
"The Calm In The Storm" is a book following Cahira or Cat as she goes by. Cat has a past tied to an elite military group, leading a secret life of assassin and head of a top security company.
We follow Cat as she returns to her hometown, trying to reconnect with her estranged sister and then continue on an action filled story as Cat deals with the situations she encounters.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you anxiously awaiting what is next for Cat.
My opinion:
Starting the first chapter, I was not sure that this book was for me, but as I continued on, the story drew me in wanting to know what was going to happen next.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The mystery romance genre tends to be one that I enjoy reading, and this proved to be one that kept my interest. I really liked the strong female lead of Cat. Due to her line of work, she doesn't easily connect emotionally to others, and it shows in certain scenes the way she's detached from what is happening. I am a fan of many things Irish, so I liked those tie-ins as well.
I've never read a romantic thriller before, so I thought I would give this one a shot and I am so glad I did! I loved everything about this book. The badass FMC who has lived/is living a very interesting life, the plot, the other characters, the romance, and EDDIE! I found myself rooting for Eddie for the entirety of the book. There was never a moment where I was disengaged while reading because of the twists and turns that took place in this book. With all of that said, if you are a fan of badass FMC's, mafia/Irish mobs, banter, and romance, this book is definitely for you! If you have never given romantic thrillers a try, you should definitely start with this book. Thank you Michael Geraghty for writing this amazing book! I will definitely need the second book because that ending?! It left me wanting more!
Wow thought I knew how the story was going only for it to totally surprise me. In the beginning you see her every day life Cat own a company with her friend Badb they met in the military. It’s a security company and much more. Cat hasn’t had contact with her sister Kelly since she left home after graduation to find her father. She is surrounded by dangerous people. She takes a break and goes back home to try and reconnect with her sister. That is a mess. Kelly has a lot of Anger issues over Cat not having any contact till now. Cat meets Eddie her sisters brother inlaw but her past interferes with them. Once you start reading make sure nothing will need your attention you won’t want to put it down. I received an arc copy for a honest review. Can’t wait to read the next in series to see how the rest of the story plays out
Cahira is an assassin who happens to be very good at what she does. She mostly works for the Celtic Mafia. All of that changes on a trip to her childhood home. I mostly enjoyed this book. The pacing of the plot is really good. There is a lot of action in this book but it didn't feel like it was one action scene after the other. I got pretty annoyed at Cahira and Eddie because sometimes it felt that they both ignored some pretty glaring red flags in each other and just had sex to chase the red flags away. I feel like those issues between the two will be resolved in a second book, however, because this book is very much the first book in the series. The book ends in a massive cliffhanger that will leave you waiting anxiously for the second book.
*Thank you Michael Geraghty for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Leading a double life can be dangerous and lonely. Cat is no stranger to this. She beautiful but deadly, part of an elite military group of assassins.
This dark romance takes Cat back home to New York where she meets Eddie. Eddie is far from her norm and outside of the life she has surrounded herself with. Will Cat separate herself from her current lifestyle for Eddie, the calm in the storm?
A small town, Mafia read with a very strong and independent FMC (Yes!), action and spice. Strong family theme woven into the plot, character banter and an ease of world building made this book well rounded to the life of Cat. She’s such an interesting character- I can’t wait to find out more!
The book ends and I’m curious if there will be another?!?
Thank you to author, Michael Geraghty, for the opportunity to read this book. I received an epub and am leaving my review voluntarily.
When the author reached out I was hesitant to review this dark romance/Irish mob book. It's so far removed from what I'd normally read but I thought why not, let's step out of my reading comfort zone. And I am so so glad I did!
It's fast-paced, action-packed, Cat the FMC is a total badass - well, all the female characters in this book are tbh. The family dynamics are interesting to say the least. Add a bit of Irish culture to the mix + the right amount of spice and you get an absolute page-turner. The cliffhanger at the end will leave you wanting for more!
Thank you Michael for providing a free digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to the next instalment of the Celtic Sisters!
I have been in my romantasy era lately, so when the author kindly messaged me on Instagram, offering me a copy of this book in exchange for a review, I must say I was a little apprehensive, worried I would not enjoy it.
How wrong was I!
I DEVOURED this book in less than 48 hours. That does not happen often, so coming from me, it is high praise!
The storyline is unlike anything I have ever read before. It has a lot of dark elements (TW: death, mafia, mob bosses, family drama). Yet, in all that, against all the odds, there is a beautiful, blossoming romance happening.
I really enjoyed the depth of the characters, especially the main FMC — Cahira. This book was so immersive, I felt like I got lost in it and became a part of it.
I could not be more pleasantly surprised and could not put it down.
Everyone, please give it a try, even if it is not your usual cup of tea. Give small authors a chance, and you may just find a hidden gem like The Calm in the Storm.
Thank you very much to the author for giving me a chance to read it! Cannot wait to read the follow-up books and see how the story plays out.
I received a DM on my bookstagram account asking for a review. I was skeptical at first since this isn't what I usually read, but I'm so glad that I gave it a shot.
I liked how badass the female character is. The themes of family and forgiveness were also clear throughout the story. I was surprised by the amount of spice, though! Midway through, I thought I had it all figured out—but boy, was I wrong. It's action-packed, intriguing, and fast-paced. I finished this in just over a day, and I can't wait to read the next one!
This is not my typical read, however it was a great read! Cat the FMC is pretty bad ass even though she may not necessarily want to live the life she lives. This story was action packed, plenty of spice and the ending left me wondering what was yet to come!
I was fortunate enough to receive an arc copy of Calm In The Storm. However, due to some particular personally triggering topics and scenarios in the book I was unable to finish the story. While it may not have been for me though it might be for you. So, I definitely recommend giving it a chance.
"A Calm in the Storm" by Michael Geraghty may seem all spice at first, but it quickly reveals itself as a captivating, plot-driven read. The badass main character, Cat, embodies strength and resilience, never backing down from a challenge.
This novel brings the heat in action and emotion, showcasing a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go to extremes to get it. The cliffhanger ending left me eagerly awaiting the next book. If you enjoy stories with secret groups, assassins, strong female characters, and romance, this is a must-read. I'm looking forward to book 2!
Not my usual read but from the very first chapter, The Calm in the Storm pulled me in and never let go. Michael Geraghty crafts a gripping, action-packed story that kept me engaged from start to finish.
Cahira "Cat" O’Brien is a force to be reckoned with—an assassin who gets the job done, no matter the cost. She has endured a rough past, from family struggles to toxic relationships, and just when she thinks life is taking a turn for the better, she realizes the people she trusts aren’t who they seem. The betrayals, high-stakes action, and emotional depth make this an unforgettable read.
I absolutely fell in love with Cat as a character—her strength, resilience, and complexity make her one of the most compelling protagonists I’ve read in a while. I can’t wait to continue the series!
A huge thank you to Michael Geraghty for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. You are an incredible storyteller, and this book was an absolute thrill. If you love action-packed, character-driven stories with a strong female lead, this series is a must-read!
One day, while growing a global Instagram account, I got a DM. I was surprised at first. How did you know me and ask for a review? Plus I'm not American, I'm Korean! It was interesting. So I accepted this book without getting an overview.
While reading this book, I had a lot of thoughts about whether to review it or not. It wasn't a genre I usually read, so I had a lot of thoughts about whether I could read and review this book properly. I had a lot of worries.
is the story of Kat, a female protagonist who is a member of an Irish mafia organization. She is tasked with the deadly task of quietly assassinating opposition figures during a military operation. What is particularly shocking is how Kat is assassinated. After having a sexual encounter with a male target, Kat quietly kills him with a poisoned syringe at the peak of her excitement. This tense assassination scene made me hold my breath throughout the reading. A cat who wants to go back in time clashes between Danny, who has a dangerous past, and Eddie Brennan, who will become the future.
Will she continue to live as part of the Irish Mafia organization, or will she choose Eddie Brennan, a contractor who has nothing to do with the world where cats live?
Eddie decides to find the cat. But Kat leaves the injured Eddie behind and drives off south along a New York State highway. Can she find peace in the storm? The first book makes her wonder which path she will take.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Kat and Eddie's relationship will develop in the second book. Kat also wants to go back to her past, and it deepens my curiosity whether she can actually go back to what she wants.
For those who want to know about Irish culture, mafia organizations, thrillers, and romance novels, I recommend Michael Geraghty's

The Calm In The Storm The Celtic Sisters Book 1 By Michael Geraghty
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶
🖤 Dark romance 🍀 Irish Mob 🖤 A$$assin FMC 🍀 Torn between two choices her past lover or a new beginning 🖤 Small Town Romance
This first instalment of the Celtic Sisters throws you straight into Cat's life as a female A$Sassin, her current occupation after she has tried to run from her childhood hometown as well as her ex-military background (though not a whole lot of this is made too clear throughout this book, maybe in the next?). Anyway all is going well, she has it all, the money, the power, the lifestyle, the casual thing happening with Danny (and Irish m0bster) until Danny tries to get her to do a job she isn't comfortable with. But just in time, her sister texts her out of the blue inviting her to her niece's 4th birthday back in her hometown and while she hasn't been back there in a very long time, maybe now is the perfect time to make the trip and try to mend fences? There also may be a certain man she meets that melts her heart 😍 Unfortunately, Danny follows and then nobody is safe. Who will make it out by the end, or will Cat manage to save those she loves before all her secrets are revealed?
This is listed as a dark romance but for all my dark romance girlies out there I would use this term very lightly, this is very much more of a small-town romance/Irish mob romance. But still an enjoyable read.
I look forward to seeing what comes out in book two ☺️
Secrets cannot stay hidden for long! This book made me super intrigued. Story follows Cahira “Cat”, she has everything-beauty, money, and is lethal. She is a baddie of an FMC, but the one thing that is she missing is family. She has led a double life for years, she was in an elite Military organization and even a deadly assassin. She randomly gets an invite to her nieces birthday party and something just tells Cat to go, drop everything in your life and go. She goes back knowing her sister would hate her and it might not go well, and knowing it had been years. What she finds there is what she never expected. She finds she wants to get to know her sisters brother-in-law Eddie who she is trying to keep her secrets away from him. Well, then her ex-lover -who also is her prior boss-shows up demanding she complete a job and threatens her. Will she and Eddie be able to make it out in one piece? I also wanted to take time to thank this author who finally writes a FMC who seems to have a higher $eX drive than the MMC. I generally enjoyed it, and I love the fact that Eddie, was a true gentleman throughout the book. Thank you! This was honestly something I would not have normally picked up but I am so happy he sent me a copy to read. I loved how faced paced it was. It had all the wonderful things: action, plot, spiciness, and mystery. But to me even though this book was fantastic-HOW CAN YOU LEAVE US ON AN ENDING LIKE THAT?! It did not leave on a terrible ending but…. We need the next book like yesterday!
From the opening chapter, The Calm in the Storm proves to be an engaging and suspenseful start to the Celtic Sisters series. Cahira “Cat” O’Brien is a strikingly complex protagonist—wealthy, accomplished, and dangerous—living a double life as both a business leader and an assassin. Her return to her roots in upstate New York pulls her between two very different men: Danny Darcy, the powerful son of an Irish mob leader, and Eddie Brennan, a contractor unconnected to her dangerous world. This dynamic adds layers of conflict to an already high-stakes narrative.
The romance throughout is more of a slow burn than a dark romance, but it complements the tension created by the crime and mafia elements. Cat herself stands out as a strong and multifaceted lead, carrying emotional depth and a past that continues to shape her choices.
A particularly intriguing element is the introduction of the Celtic Sisters. Bound together by Gaelic codes and rules not meant to be broken, this mysterious group hints at deeper secrets, betrayals, and traditions that will undoubtedly play a larger role in the continuation of the series.
Overall, this novel is a compelling blend of mafia intrigue, personal identity, and suspense. It leaves many questions unanswered by design, creating anticipation for the next installment. Readers interested in crime, Irish mob politics, and a powerful female lead will find this a promising beginning to the series.

If you’re a sucker for dark romance with a splash (okay, a tidal wave) of mob drama and high-stakes action, The Calm in the Storm will snatch your attention and refuse to give it back. I picked this book up thinking I’d read a chapter or two before bed—and suddenly it was 3 a.m. and I was emotionally compromised.
We follow Cahira “Cat” O’Brien, who isn’t just your average badass heroine—she’s a top-tier, weapons-trained, emotionally-complex assassin. You know, just your typical girl next door. Cat’s a total force, but even deadly women can miss their roots. A trip home to see her sister and niece quickly turns into a recon mission of the heart when she meets Eddie, the human equivalent of a golden retriever in the best possible way. He's sweet, he's charming, and he has no idea what kind of chaos he’s just walked into.
But what’s a love story without a little (read: a LOT) of danger? Enter Danny, Cat’s obsessive ex and resident toxic alpha who thinks “no” is just a suggestion. What was supposed to be a quiet return home turns into a blood-soaked chess match of blades, betrayals, and unresolved history.
Geraghty delivers a knockout blend of romance, suspense, and “holy crap did that just happen?!” moments that kept me guessing (and gasping) to the very last page.
TL;DR: If you love your romance with grit, guts, and guns, The Calm in the Storm belongs at the top of your TBR pile. Just don’t blame me when you lose sleep.
The Calm in the Storm completely swept me away. From the very first chapter, the story hums with the cadence of Irish culture, its grit, its history, woven so naturally into the plot that you can almost smell the sea air and hear the lilt of the accents. As someone with Irish roots, I felt an immediate pull; the cultural details aren’t just scenery, they shape the characters’ choices, loyalties, and vulnerabilities.
This isn’t a “paint-by-numbers” romance. The love story at its center is complicated, bruised, and deeply human. It grows out of danger, betrayal, and hard truths instead of tidy tropes, which makes every moment between the leads feel earned and unpredictable. The thriller elements are just as strong—fast pacing, high stakes, and twists that keep you off balance without ever feeling cheap.
What impressed me most is how the book balances tension with tenderness. It’s dark and suspenseful, yet threaded with hope and passion. By the final chapters, I wasn’t just rooting for survival—I was rooting for redemption and connection.
If you’re looking for a romantic thriller with real depth, an authentic Irish atmosphere, and a love story that refuses to be simple, The Calm in the Storm is an unforgettable read.
My Ratings: Plot: ★★★★☆ (fresh and unpredictable, a true page-turner)
Characters: ★★★★☆ (great chemistry, with mystery left me wanting more)
Spice: ★★★★☆ (deliciously present without overwhelming the story)
I couldn’t put The Calm in the Storm down—devoured it in just one day! From the very first page, the story grabbed me with its perfect pacing and kept me hooked until the final, jaw-dropping twist.
This book follows Cat, a fierce and skilled assassin who’s realized that family is the most important thing—something she’s been missing for a long time. When she finally takes the courageous step to return home and face her sister, she’s thrown into a whirlwind of surprises. Most unexpected of all is running into Eddie at her niece’s birthday party—who turns out to be her niece’s uncle! Their relationship starts off shaky, with Cat guarding her secrets, but Eddie’s relentless determination begins to break down her walls, revealing a bond that’s hard to ignore.
As secrets threaten to come crashing out, Cat finds herself in a precarious position—ready to do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones, even if it means risking her life and putting a massive target on her back. The story is packed with action, sharp banter, small-town romance, family secrets, and even a touch of Irish mob intrigue—all woven into a story that’s impossible to put down.
Michael Geraghty has crafted a gripping tale of love, loyalty, and sacrifice that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you love intense suspense, compelling characters, and a story that will keep you turning pages late into the night, The Calm in the Storm is an absolute must-read. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable ride!
Thank you so much Michael Geraghty for the ARC! I can't wait for the second book and to continue Cat's story!
This is a faced paced, action packed suspense novel that had me gripped from the start and kept me engaged throughout. I absolutely loved it. I sped through it needing to know what was going to happen next. Edge of your seat, just one more chapter kind of story! The writing flowed perfectly blending tension, romance, danger and emotional moments seamlessly. All of the characters were intriguing and the complex family relationships, the Irish culture background and mob dynamics completely added to the stories depth. Cahira (Cat) O’Brien has to be my favourite FMC to date, a complete badass, beautiful, rich, mysterious and totally lethal. There’s definitely more to her backstory and past with the elite group ‘The Celtic Sisters’. On returning to her family home to reconnect with her estranged sister and put distance between herself and Danny Darcy, her on/off lover and son of a powerful Irish mobster, she meets Eddie Brennan and shares an instant connection. Cat is a woman who knows exactly what she wants and a steamy romance starts almost immediately. Unfortunately her secret life and past follows her and puts everyone close to her in danger. The way Cat fights to protect them, her strength and determination had me rooting for her the whole way through.

100% recommended to anyone who loves an action packed, dark romance thriller. I’m so intrigued by this series and can’t wait for book 2.

The Calm in the Storm by Michael Geraghty is a gripping romantic suspense and the first installment of The Celtic Sisters series.
The story follows Cahira "Cat" O'Brien, a wealthy ex-military assassin who decides to reconnect with her estranged family after years apart. Driven by a desire to change her life, she returns to her hometown, where she develops a romantic connection with Eddie, her sister's brother-in-law. However, her dangerous past and a controlling affair with her former employer threaten her newfound hope for love and normalcy. Will Cat and Eddie overcome the odds?
Suspense, danger, and love are at the heart of this captivating tale. The plot masterfully portrays the life of an assassin grappling with her dark past while yearning for a semblance of a "normal" life, even if only briefly. The ever-shifting events keep readers engaged, and the characters are complex and intriguing. While Cat initially comes across as somewhat frustrating, her vulnerable side eventually shines through, making her a compelling protagonist.
The ending, sentimental and moving, stood out as my favorite part of the book.
I highly recommend The Calm in the Storm to fans of romantic suspense and those who appreciate a thrilling, emotionally charged story.

I loved everything about this book, the story was easy to follow and had a great cast of characters. If dark romance, Mobs and small town genres are your thing then you will love it. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💜 Thank you to the author for my arc in exchange for an honest review.
I’m so glad I read this book! The mystery and suspense had me hooked from the very first page. I was full of questions and needed more with every chapter.
Cahira is not your typical heroine. She works for the Irish mob, though the reasons behind her involvement aren't revealed in this book. Her past haunts her, which is why her present is marked by loneliness and a longing for a life she never had.
She’s lethal—a dangerous woman who never lets her guard down. But when the chance to mend her relationship with her sister arises, she starts to get too comfortable, unaware that her enemies are closing in.
The world-building is excellent, the pacing steady, and the characters compelling. The romance, in particular, was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t expecting it, but a sweet and patient man manages to capture Cahira’s heart—and is even willing to fight for her. Things don’t come easily for them, though, but I’m very hopeful we’ll see more of Eddie in book two.
The story ends on a massive cliffhanger, and I need answers. I truly can’t wait for the sequel!
With that said, if you enjoy romantic thrillers filled with mystery, danger, and complex characters, you MUST read this book!
Thank you so much to Michael for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of his great book.
I really enjoyed this book. Cahira ( Cat) plays the perfect leading lady in this book. It was such a good book to cosy down with. I loved it and it was a great all rounder it has spice, action and romance. What more could you want. I am very much looking forward to hearing what the celtic sister has in store. The Calm in the Storm 4.5⭐️ is a dark, immersive romance that pulls you in with its intensity and keeps you hooked with a gripping mix of action, passion, and danger. Cahira (Cat) is an ex-military assassin who now works for the Irish mob, a woman both deadly and deeply layered. Her attempt to escape that world and reconnect with her estranged sister leads her to Eddie, a man she shares an instant and undeniable connection with. But love doesn’t come easy when your past is laced with blood, and soon enough, Cat’s demons come knocking, threatening everything she holds dear. This book delivers a thrilling mix of suspense, romance, and Irish grit. The love triangle adds tension, the action keeps you at the edge of your seat, and the spice is just enough to complement the darker themes. Certain aspects could have been fleshed out more, but overall, the storytelling was strong, and the Irish elements were a fantastic touch. Be warned—it ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you desperate for more.
If you love dark romances with badass heroines, dangerous entanglements, and high stakes, The Calm in the Storm is definitely worth the read.
This is a romantic thriller. The spice is spicy! 🥵 Cahira is a badass FMC with a dark past. This book kept me hooked! I couldn’t put it down! The plot is fantastic. The twists and turns! Can’t wait to read the next in series to see how the rest of the story goes.
Thank you Michael 🤩

First things first: I NEED that second book now! I hope to get som answers from this one that I was stuck in right away.
This book is spicey and thrilling, it leaves you wanting more and awakes the curiosity to know more about the FMC and her history and just some bits and pieces.
Michael Geraghty has a way with his words that leaves you with an urge to just keep reading. He weaves in (what I think) some Irish/celtic charm and mystique in the book.
I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland and I’ve always been a little interested in Irish and Celtic culture, folklore and more. I do not know so much about it yet and Michael has only some Irish fragments in his book but it is one of the things that speaks to me.
Michael Geraghty, you are one of my new favorite authors and I REALLY need to get another book of yours to read along with a nice glass with Redbreast (12 years, it’s really one of my favorites).
