Desperate to escape the pressure of a post-war society ruled by religious fanatics known as the Flock of the True Light, typically level-headed medic Lark Thornton orchestrates a storm that results in her being arrested, tortured and forced to marry a snarky stranger who would rather see her dead than as his wife. Given no choice but to leave behind everything she's ever known and sail to a land her people fear, Lark’s hatred of the Flock feels as if it may consume her whole.
This hatred is the only common ground that Lark and her new husband seem to share.
It's no secret that Warren Elyas’s top priority is keeping his little sister safe in a land that is plagued by violence, disease and poverty. The last thing he needs to add to his mounting list of responsibilities is a fraudulent marriage to a woman whose existence he despises... or so he thinks.
Thrown into a world of brutality, bloodshed, betrayal and deception- the two may need each other more than they ever could've imagined.
I have so many books in my TBR pile and was looking for something different and just decided on this one because of the cover! Shocked by how good this book was! So many emotions, loss, and love! This stand alone dystopian romance is quick pace and easy to read novel! Check for trigger warnings if you have any before starting. If you enjoyed The Handmaidens Tale, this is something you also need to read! So pleasantly surprised by this book, and sad it ended but it ended so beautifully! 💕
ARC - this book was so good. I honestly didn’t expect much being that this is the authors first book (no offense to them) but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s well written and the plot and characters are amazing. It is definitely dark and graphic throughout the whole book, so don’t take those trigger warnings lightly. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars from me is that from climax and after, it just wrapped up very quickly. Well the rest of the book was very detailed and well thought out, the ending felt rushed. I would have liked at least 100 more pages of battling the bad guys, the aftermath and then a non rushed happily ever after, but that’s just me. If you like a fast ending, then this is definitely for you.
The book felt rushed at the end. I did like the slow burn romance. I felt the smut was placed appropriately and liked that it was more sprinkled in rather than being overwhelmed by it.
Dystopian, post apocalyptic, dark themes carry throughout this book. Check your TW’s always.
This is my first book reading by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a stand alone but was done so well I think it could’ve been a duology or even a trilogy. I do not want to spoil any parts and can only say that it is worth the read.
We drown the Light by H.R March is the first book I’ve read by this author and that’s because this is a debut novel. Once again, I found myself addicted to a dystopian world! A real page turning…nail biting world. And I was there for the whole thing… I loved it! This book as set my expectations of H.R Marsh very high and I have high expectations for the next book that’s published.
This story has a beginning, middle and end. No cliffhanger and answers that are amazingly discovered. There is so much that this book has to offer the reader… action, adventure, mystery and a character that has vengeance on the mind. I loved how I could picture myself in this book, the descions, the hesitations; I could see me making those choices. The relatability in this book was 100% the best part. I really liked the character Lark and the ordeals that she overcomes. The risk; reward is amazing!!! It’s a dark romance that has such a good ending. ⚠️⚠️ Check Trigger Warnings!! ⚠️⚠️ It’s always good being prepared for what you’re about to read. You should really check this book out! You won’t regret it!!!
Dystopian/cult romance is not really my vibe, but this was 🔥 Main characters were so relatable and the story was so realistic, it will give you Hand Maid’s Tale type heebie jeebies. I was hooked from the first paragraph.
FMC is a badass who doesn’t make dumb decisions that make you hate her or think she’s stupid. She does make a naive one, but the author sets up the dilemma well, making it 100% relatable. I will say that she was somewhat timid around the MMC at times which was a little off-putting, but they still butt-heads enough for the reader to feel confident that the FMC is NOT a doormat and takes no shit.
MMC is a badass and regular-ass dude at the same time, and I AM HERE FOR IT. He’s still “alpha” (doy, this is a romance) but he’s not over the top at all. You get insight into the softer side of him as he deals with the moral and ethical implications of his actions and their consequences.
There’s blood, death, destruction, revenge and vengeance, slow-burn, betrayal, angst, spice, and a HEA to boot.
Spice: 4/5 it was good and the slow-burn made it so satisfying.
I loved this world, it has a Handmaids Tail vibe that I find very interesting. The fact that it is a world ruled by religion makes the whole story much more interesting as we see the injustices and inequalities with which people are treated by those who should protect them. Lark is a revolutionary, full of determination and strength and who, no matter how unpleasant life brings her, always manages to keep her head high. Warren is something extraordinary, how closed he is to the possibility of love, but throughout the book he opens this cocoon to let Lark in. The evolution of this character is amazing. If I ever think you know what's going to happen, think again because this book is full of amazing twists and turns. Very well written book, with a concise but not too extensive description. I strongly recommend
Okay, maybe I have a few. This book stayed on my TBR for 2 years. I knew going in that the religious element of it would have to wait for me to be in a frame of mind to cope with it, but wowwwwwww, this was heavy.
Raw, gritty, and soul piercing.
So much loss and heartbreak.
The things both characters were forced to endure made me cry, but their strength and resilience made the love between them all the more beautiful when they finally faced their feelings. And when the tide finally turned in their favor, I couldn’t stop my maniacal grin at the retribution they meted out.
This was a difficult read to get through because the story was so raw, but I loved it. How this book only has 17 reviews is beyond me because it’s truly an amazing story. Definitely adding the paperback (wish there was a hardcover!) to my shelf.
This book was sooo different than what I usually read and it was amazing! It t is a very adult book but not over the top with adult themes! In a post apocalyptic world, most people need to find ways to coup so I get it! The character growth and plot was just *chefs kiss*. I loved the cult/religious theme as well!
I accidentally happened upon this book and I am glad I read it. It was so good and definitely worth the read. I would love for there to be more books added to this one because there are so many other stories that could be told based on it.
The adult version, darker version of a cult Hunger Games in a sense. I think creepy religious cult like Waco Tx meets badass girl after going through some traumatic events! Check triggers lots in this book but 10/10 highly recommended
I honestly got lost in this story. It started me on a weird rollercoaster of religious kink smut but I’m not mad about it.
The sheer ferocity of the FMC was powerful. The depiction of her commitment to the light and what was right, whoossshh really had me swooning for the fall of an oppressive religious theocracy.
And my main man, he is a total babe, not for looks but for his heart. This man, this man right here really had me going. His deep cavernous heart was beautiful to see on display.
