He was the proponent of liberty as the ultimate ideal. Savarkar was a poet, writer and playwright. He launched a movement for religious reform advocating dismantling the system of caste in Hindu culture, and reconversion of the converted Hindus back to Hindu religion. Savarkar created the term Hindutva, and emphasized its distinctiveness from Hinduism which he associated with social and political disunity. Savarkar’s Hindutva sought to create an inclusive collective identity. The five elements of Savarkar's philosophy were Utilitarianism, Rationalism and Positivism, Humanism and Universalism, Pragmatism and Realism.

Savarkar's revolutionary activities began when studying in India and England, where he was associated with the India House and founded student societies including Abhinav Bharat Society and the Free India Society, as well as publications espousing the cause of complete Indian independence by revolutionary means. Savarkar published The Indian War of Independence about the Indian rebellion of 1857 that was banned by British authorities. He was arrested in 1910 for his connections with the revolutionary group India House.

Following a failed attempt to escape while being transported from Marseilles, Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms amounting to 50 years' imprisonment and moved to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

While in jail, Savarkar wrote the work describing Hindutva, openly espousing Hindu nationalism. He was released in 1921 under restrictions after signing a plea for clemency in which he renounced revolutionary activities. Travelling widely, Savarkar became a forceful orator and writer, advocating Hindu political and social unity. Serving as the president of the Hindu Mahasabha, Savarkar endorsed the ideal of India as a Hindu Rashtra and opposed the Quit India struggle in 1942, calling it a "Quit India but keep your army" movement. He became a fierce critic of the Indian National Congress and its acceptance of India's partition, and was one of those accused in the assassination of Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was acquitted as the charges could not be proven.
The airport at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar's capital, has been named Veer Savarkar International Airport. The commemorative blue plaque on India House fixed by the Historic Building and Monuments Commission for England reads "Vinayak Damodar Savarkar 1883-1966 Indian patriot and philosopher lived here".

This book is an English translation of Veer Savarkar’s original book in Marathi. This is a tale of realities, filled with factual incidents modified to suit a more fictional narrative. The introduction by the author and the one by the translator are really poignant, enriching reads. These sections have enough preamble / context set to the reader, to prepare the latter to brace with the stark realities that would unfold over the successive pages.

At the onset of the book, the reader is exposed to early 20th century Malabar village where casteism is practiced with strong fervour and untouchability being one of the key fault lines in the society. The attempts by the religious preacher to harness these lines and convert the lower strata of the society into their fold. While the methodology and brainwashing could still be relevant, some of the points brought up by the preacher are definitely thought provoking. The question by a child about untouchability of humans, while animals are accorded love & compassion is yet another philosophical moment in the narrative.

This perhaps was the calm before the Tsunami of destruction strikes the population. Wave after wave of massive destruction, rape, looting, beheading follows the initial calm. Reading the accounts is bound to churn the inners of the reader. Not for the faint hearted. The carnage is captured in its gory detail, which is bound to shake the readers. The translator (author) has brought out this barbarity in its full gory in as few words as possible. The scenario where a temple is destroyed, desecrated & converted is spine chilling. The interlock between the wronged mother, the destroyed daughter who takes vengeance again & the tale of 2 grandsons is simply outstanding.

The historical background at the end of the book is an eye-opener. One needs to understand the background historical events that leads to the one of the darkest hours in our history. Quite a revelation !!!

In short, this book is not an easy read on the mind and soul, yet is quite well written by the original author & extremely well translated by Manjula ji. Recommended Read !!!

Moplah and kashmir had same condition same mindset, same psyche and not to forget these seculars. Seculars have actually destroyed our nation one can't control our emotions while reading this book. The facts were deliberately suppressed by the Congress and the British as usual.

The book is really an eye-opener. The book matched my expectations. The way it deals with the story of riots and speaks in the subject of discrimination, unity, etc in the Hindu society is superb and true. The book for sure is controversial for many as it hurts their interest but like most I believe it shows the truth with no cover unchecked.
Coming the story specifically, the book really plays very well. Every time the moment was to be emotional, it was, every time it was to be full anger, it was, every time it was to be sad, it was. All the violence was before eyes. And it will be injustice not to mention the attachment reader forms with some specific people. It really hurts when such people are shown to die.
Overall, I will recommend this book only to those who are ready to face the truth always, and don't step back from hurting the narrative they believe. It might be disappointing for some.
Anyways, I rate the book 8.25/10.
