Harriet Flanagan, Harry to her friends, and Molly Whittier, yes that Molly, the movie star, are thrilled when they’re invited to the Bits and Bobs Knitting Retreat at the 10th Earl of Mebane’s estate – in Scotland no less!
Armed with knitting needles, cocktail dresses, and shoes – so many shoes – they can’t wait to take the drop spindle class and make new knitting friends.
To their surprise, who else should be there but their friend, Edgar Goshart, the famous mystery writer. He’s thinking of using the 9th Earl of Mebane’s tragic death as the basis for his next mystery. Accidentally shot while out hunting with friends, the Earl’s death seems like the perfect story to be turned into something more nefarious.
In between shopping for yarn and learning to spin, Harry and Molly are only too delighted to help Edgar come up with fictional reasons why the man’s friends might have wanted to kill him. And the dead Earl’s friends seem only too happy to spill each other’s secrets. After all, as one of them
“Just think of all the possible motives for murder an old group of friends could have.”
I spent the first third of the book trying to figure out who was going to die. Then spent the next third realizing this one actually wasn't going to have a body. Well, a fresh body at least. Spent the rest of the book very much enjoying all revealing of the secrets.
I love Hillary's style of writing. She is fantastic and extremely entertaining.
I read her other two this is nothing like them! It was so boring. She spent 85% of the book describing a manor house and knitting market and a scavenger hunt game. She only got around to the mystery in the last 10%. I hope her next one is better.
This mystery was so clever and refreshing! I spent the first portion of the book wondering if there would be a new murder or would Harrie be investigating an old "accident" turned murder. I loved the setting, the games the characters played at the knitting retreat and the murder mystery with many suspects spelled out so clearly. Latimer's writing is engaging and fun. I vote for more murder mysteries by Hilary.
