Constable Jenny Williams was horrified to see the broken body of a young woman lying in the mud just outside the township of Coober Pedy. The truck driver who had called it in was in shock, and the rain was pelting down, destroying any evidence that might be there. The hasty erecting of a tent over the body, helped, but they all knew it'd be hard to find anything. There was no identification on the woman, she was barefoot and covered in blood. Jenny knew there was more to the accident than they'd initially thought.

As the investigation deepened, Jenny was also looking into the disappearance of her aunt and cousin some time ago - that was the reason she was sent to Coober Pedy. Having to put that on the back burner as this case was ramping up, evidence from Adelaide shocked them. What was the story about this young woman and her past?

Her Broken Bones is the 2nd in the Opal Fields series by Aussie author Fiona Tarr and I enjoyed it, apart from the lack of editing spoiling the story's flow. Jenny is a good character, although impulsive and against taking guidance from her superiors. I've never been to Coober Pedy but hope to one day; it sounds such a fascinating place. I'm looking forward to #3 in the series soon.

Setting: Coober Pedy, South Australia; modern day.
This is the second book featuring police constable Jenny Williams, who has chosen to work in the isolated mining town of Coober Pedy in order to investigate the disappearance of her aunt and cousin several years earlier.
As she continues to investigate this mystery (and doesn't really get very far), she is also involved in the death of a young woman who has been hit by a truck on a local road miles from any habitation - just how did the woman get there and was she dead before being hit by the truck?
Jenny keeps on winding her boss up by her methods and insubordination but can count on the assistance of her friend, forensic investigator Penny, as the body is revealed to be that of an American child who went missing whilst on holiday there several years earlier.....
Another book full of atmosphere and a true sense of the Australian Outback, which is a major 'player' in the events that transpire during the police investigations. Great characters in this series too and I am looking forward to reading more of this series - 8.5/10.

I enjoyed the first book in the series Her Buried Bones and was not disappointed with this second book in the series.

The author has offered great continuity from the first book with characters developing and becoming more rounded and we get to know them better and some of their back stories.

Jenny Williams is getting quite a reputation for attracting murders in this allegedly quiet backwater as far as policing is concerned and this is reinforced with the discovery of the body of a young woman found by the roadside.

With the involvement of Penny the forensic scientist who flies in to examine the scene and the body, it becomes clear that assumptions made at the time may be far from the truth. Having tracked down her family in the US and with their arrival in Cooper Pedy, more questions than answers are raised.

Parallel to this new investigation is the ongoing search by Jenny for any clues to the disappearance of her aunt and cousin several years earlier, the reason she applied for the posting to the town. Slowly secrets and clues are being revealed as her relationship with the enigmatic Nick moves into more romantic territory.

The story races to the tense stand off and the discovery of horrendous family secrets and leaving the reader teetering on the edge of a cliffhanger, eager for the next book in the series.

Her Broken Bones is book two in the Opal Fields series by Fiona Tarr. When a young woman was found dead on the side of an isolated outback road, at first, everyone thought it was a hit and run. The only one who believed that there was more to this case was Constable Jenny Williams. The more Constable Jenny Williams investigates, the more the case does not make sense. New forensic evidence did not help Constable Jenny Williams, which only caused more questions. The readers of Her Broken Bones will continue to follow Constable Jenny Williams to discover what happens.

Her Broken Bones is the second book in Fiona Tarr's series that I have read, and I continue to enjoy the stories and the characters. I was engaged with this book from the first page and continued until the end. I love Fiona Tarr's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Her Broken Bones is well-written and researched. I like Fiona Tarr's description of the settings of Her Broken Bones, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Her Broken Bones will learn about the role of forensics in Law Enforcement investigations. Also, the readers will understand the importance of the RFDS for rural communities.

I recommend this book.

This is building into a great series, I loved book 1 and this one even more. Can be read as standalone, but why when they are both so good.

Jenny has joined the police for one reason to find out what happened to her Cousin and Aunt, but for the 2nd time a body has turned up in the outback of Australia, and its her job and 1st priority to resolve this case. Her friend forensic specialist from Alderley Penny returns to help in more ways than 1, think she owns a forensic spoon only not used on the case. Nev, Tim q her colleagues are all present plus Nick from Willow Creek and the motel staff. Plus, there are a few new guests, and they definitely add to the atmosphere, plus the storyline, obviously.

The characters are wonderful, some quirks like the rest of us and all believable for who they are, but don't be fooled red herrings are available. I really enjoyed this and can't wait for the next but have no choice, so with batted breath I will. I can't recommend this enough and really hope You enjoy it as much as I do.

Following the excellent 'Her Buried Bones' it was great fun to return to Coober Pedy to catch up with Jenny and the towns folk just as another body turns up in suspicious circumstances. What looks like a simple hit and run reopens an old case with potentially deadly consequences.

The gang are all back from book 1 and we see the plot cleverly interwoven with the developing relationships between Jenny and the rest of the residents of the rough and ready Australian outback town.

Whilst attempting to solve the immediate mystery, Jenny is still on the trail of her missing Aunt and Cousin that disappeared a number of years ago in the towns vicinity.

Some nice misdirection from the author as Jenny narrows down the suspects and an exciting finale to wrap up the case.

Coober Pedy is fast becoming the new Midsomer or Cabot Cove as the murders in this previously quiet town begin to mount up. I can't wait for the next installment

This is the second book in the Opal Fields series and it is equally as good as the first one. The story was great and we are learning more about the characters back stories now, I am looking forward to the next book.

Opal Fields #2 teases

This is the second murder mystery involving Jenny Williams, a police constable who gets posted to the remote Australian opal mining town of Coober Pedy to find out what happened to her missing aunt and cousin but is sidetracked from her main goal by having to solve current crimes. In this ‘episode’, she investigates the death of a young girl who was reported kidnapped five years earlier.

I liked it a little less than the first book in the series (Her Buried Bones) due to the too frequent reminders that Jenny has a secret personal mission. Okay we get it, it’s on her mind ALL the time but this is beyond obsessive. Also, there is something irritating about the depiction of her character flaws: a combination of pig-headedness and naivety which frequently sees her ‘jumping the gun’, charging off impatiently without back-up, or deliberately countermanding direct orders.

Her colleagues often display misogynistic attitudes, that women are intrinsically hysterical, impetuous and untrustworthy and the way Jenny is written seems to go along with this outdated prejudice. The trope of the maverick cop having to struggle against authority and break rules but still succeed in solving cases is also tiresome. Jenny got rid of a corrupt cop in the first book, can she not now be allowed to handle her senior colleagues better? Win their trust, get their cooperation?

Worse still, although the author has a good feel for the setting, has credible plots and a reasonable feel for character development, the writing style is somewhat simplistic and I find myself wanting to edit or rewrite parts as I am reading.

Jenny is written as both an engaging and infuriating character. She constantly butts heads with colleagues and superior officers but is forgiven/tolerated due to her tenacity in solving crimes. Beyond dogged in following up leads and clues, she frequently puts herself (and others) in harm’s way. She is meant to be a good reader of people yet her attachment to her friend Penny, the forensic scientist who flies in from Adelaide as a scene of crime specialist, is a bit creepy tbh as is her reluctance to act on her attraction to men (like Nev and Nick). One aspect I do like and respect is the sensitivity with which the author deals with aboriginal characters, their culture, history and struggles. All in all, I find myself sufficiently intrigued by Jenny’s cases to read on.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The author throws you into the story straight away without much preamble and keeps up multiple themes through the book. This is the second book in the opal fields series about constable Jenny and her quest for justice and finding her cousins whereabouts. It is fast paced and keeps you interested all the way through. Characterisation of Jenny and her friends is great. I am starting to really like several characters and am looking forwards to the next book.

Okay but

Doctor Nev and Paramedic Tim sound like characters in a children's book. We know what they are and don't need reminding every couple of chapters. The reppatition of information not needed.

rushed

Story has potential but it all comes to a quick, crashing conclusion. Too abrupt to enjoy the mystery, and some of the characters are very clichéd .

The action continues in the Australian Outback town of Coober Pedy. Constable Jenny Williams and her partner are assigned to the case when a woman is found dead on a remote highway. The victim staggered or jumped in front of a large truck and the driver is too stunned to tell them anything useful.

They soon learn the young girl, who was from the United States, disappeared several years earlier while visiting William Creek Station, just like the case of Jenny’s aunt and cousin. Is there a connection?

When it’s discovered the woman’s body had multiple old fractures that weren’t set properly, suspicion turns to her parents, but there are plenty of other suspects. For a while, I was concerned the victim may have been the subject of human trafficking, and that sent up some red flags (triggers) for me. However, the book isn’t gruesome, but it is realistic.

Characters from book one make appearances, and I feel as if I’m getting to know them. Jenny continues to look for clues about her relatives as well as trying to help Nick with the investigation into his father's death.

Normally I’m not too fond of serial fiction, and these books can be read as stand-alones. However, the underlying theme of Jenny’s pursuit of the truth is woven throughout the series. I’m intrigued enough to continue.

Four stars for this one.

This is the second installment of six in the Opal field series by Fiona Tarr set in the Opal mining town of Coober Pedy in South Australia. The story follows on from the first and whilst references are made to the first story it is probably better to read them in sequence.
In this book Constable Williams is called to the death of a young girl killed by a truck on a lonely road outside of town. What was she doing in this isolated spot barefoot and alone? The police investigate whilst at the same time jenny Williams looks deeper into the mystery of her missing Aunt and cousin.
I am enjoying this series although it is sometimes rather naively written and occasionally jumps ahead with little explanation. The editing also requires improvement. Especially when on one page a character is apparently shot in their right shoulder only for it to be referred to as their left shoulder on the next page. All that aside it is an enjoyable series with interesting characters and I look forward to the next installment of Constable Williams and co.

A young woman is found dead along the side of the road near Coober Pedy, Australia . She is from USA and had been missing for 6 years after vacationing here with her parents. Where was she? How did she survive for 6 years? Constable Jenny Williams is on the hunt to find out answers. The girl’s parents return but something is not right about them. Jenny is still looking for answers about the disappearance of her own aunt and cousin and the death of Nick’s father. Lots of mystery and suspense. Great group of characters. Looking forward to the third book in the series to get resolution. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I didn't like the second book in the series as much as the first one. Mainly because of Jenny's attitude. She really needs to take it down a notch. When the sergeant told her that she behaved like an arrogant little shit, I had to agree and I was glad that someone actually told her outright. She fights for what's right and that's admirable. But to get her culprit she walks roughshod all over other people. She cares deeply for the victims - but she doesn't care for the community because she's not a part of it and she doesn't intend to be. She plans to find out what happened to her aunt and cousin and then she's out of there. So, if she damages someone's reputation, marks them as suspicious by dragging them down to the station, she doesn't care. And like the sergeant told her, he would be there, living among these people, his friends and neighbors, long after she was gone. I think she really needs to grasp that she's not living in a city anymore but in a small town where damaged reputation - even unjustly damaged - sticks.

Constable Jenny Williams is back like she never left. I enjoyed book two even more than the excellent book 1. I think this is gonna be an epic series. The characters are just so awesome, the plot is unbelievably brilliant. There is lots of funny stuff that reading this book is never boring.

I was most impressed by the depth and unpredictability of the plot. The genre is very popular with lots of books but the way Fiona writes this one makes it so much more interesting.
I will be on the lookout for the next book definitely. I loved it so much. I totally recommend it.

I just found Fiona with this series and oh my gosh am I hooked‼️. She writes a gripping story with a well put together plot, characters that I almost immediately like or dislike ( so far only the officer from book one) and that I get! Jenny goes to Cooper Pedy to really just find out what really happened to her aunt and cousin but she is a police officer and murders of today take precedence! She want answers for herself but now for Nick too! I cannot wait to see what adventure and mystery Book Three brings! I received a complimentary copy and chose to write a review

This is the second book in The Opal Fields series. Constable Jenny Williams came to the opal mining town Coober Pedy to solve her family mystery. She was trying to local her missing cousin and aunt, last seen at The William Creek Station. A girl is struck dead by a truck out in the middle of nowhere; where did she come from? Is Constable Jenny Williams a "murder magnet?" Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. Love all things Fiona Tarr!

Opal Field mysteries continue

This series with Constable Jenny Williams continues. The crime mysteries are very clean and entertaining. I can wait to delve into the next mystery. I'm sure that Jenny will eventually solve the disappearance of her aunt and cousin who both disappeared several years past. However, until she does solve their disappearance, each new mystery is just as mysterious and intriguing.

Another fantastic read. This the second in this series and I am hooked. Jenny is such a ‘real’ character.
All of the characters are well defined and it is so easy to visualise them all. Fiona’s descriptions of the town and countryside are spot on. What a cliffhanger. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for what comes next.

Constable Jenny Williams is back solving murders in a quiet town. A well written book with an interesting cast of characters and a great location. Well written storyline with plenty of action, some suspense, and several twists. A good conclusion to this story but left us with more disappearances to solve. Highly recommended and very enjoyable read. Ready for the next adventure with Jenny.

Her Broken Bones (Opal Fields Book 2), my third read from author Fiona Tarr. Enjoyable mystery carrying over from the first book. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Jenny Williams is called out to investigate the death of a young girl who was hit by a truck. The driver was quite shaken up and said the girl just ran out in front of him. Who is this girl, where did she come from. These are all questions that Jenny needs to get the answers to, thing is, they are not easy to get, and that's what makes this an excellent book!!

Good sequel

Jenny Williams once again in Coober Pedy, investigating the death of a young woman. Jenny now settled into her job and getting to know the locals. Still trying to find her missing relatives. A good read but I wanted her to conclude all the questions with answers. Now I'll have to read the rest!

The mystery was good, but this ongoing saga about Jenny finding her aunt and cousin hopefully will be resolved soon. As an aside, I wish the author didn’t name the two friends Jenny and Penny as for some reason i have to really think about which one is the constable when they are both in the same discussion.

An enjoyable read, well plotted story and a just-about-guessable who-dun-it. I enjoyed the first book in the series rather more than this one for a couple of reasons: There seemed to be a shift towards chick-lit emotions rather than police procedural, and the editing left a bit to be desired (discrete vs discreet, scull vs skull, and more).
But overall a good read and I'll be back for more.
