Willow, a 23 year-old artist, has secluded herself for so long for the sake of keeping her art true to who she is. A bad relationship with her mother, and being turned away by friends while in high school, has caused Willow to do the unthinkable and she turns to a knife for the only comfort she knows.

Being a cutter for almost half her life, Willow doesn't know any other way to deal with her emotions. Although she is a successful artist, she still feels a sense of emptiness and loathing inside. She knows that she needs to learn to love herself again, but she doesn't even know where to begin...

I can't believe this hasn't been reviewed yet. This book really touched me. As a person who has had problems with cutting in the past, I felt like this book was directed towards me. (spoiler) Even though Sara wasn't real, it still brought back very strong memories and emotions of a girl that greatly affected my life for the better. She also came from a dark place in her life and we helped each other see that there IS light at the end of the tunnel, there is hope to keep us going. I know that sounds corny, but the point is if you have ever had experiences with cutting, or know someone that has, this is a great book to read. I strongly recommend it for anyone that needs a little light and beauty in their lives.

Full disclosure, I grabbed this ebook when it was free.

This was engaging enough for me to keep going, but while I was reading, I honestly actually thought this was a memoir. This book seriously needs an editor. Some errors that I was willing to forgive when I thought it was a memoir became more frustrating when I realized this is a work of fiction. According to the author, the book is "... not autobiographical, it is still a very personal story..."

I will say that I enjoyed Willow's journey. It was satisfying and felt like a whole and complete evolution of a character.

I found the character of Sara to be frustrating.

I thoroughly enjoyed City Woods and the description of it, and how it came to be

Willow's mother was frustrating and self-centered to a nonsensical degree, and the introduction of Jace felt awkward, bordering on creepy at times, and too convenient.

I loved Mrs. Schneider as Willow’s confidant, and I loved Aaron, and Miss Morgan, as as Willow’s support system in New Jollie.

The introduction of at the end was completely confusing to me. I still don’t know what to think about it, or even what the purpose was.

The epilogue was … sweet, but again tinged with strange and creepy. It was all tied up too easily, as well, and while Willow's journey came full-circle, I was no more convinced of her mental health at the end than at the beginning.

Technically 4.5 stars, but I prefer to round up when it is worthy.

Alone will be viewed in a variety of ways depending on the reader and their past experiences in life. Those who have harmed themselves in the past or those who know people who have harmed themselves will connect stronger with the main character, Willow, much more than someone like myself who has never known (to my knowledge) anyone who has done this to themselves. Having never known a cutter, I could sympathize with all that Willow was going through and her knowledge that she needs to learn to love herself but I could not feel the same empathy for her as would someone in the same situation. Not pointing this observation out as a flaw, but merely as a acknowledgement of how Alone can be read from other angles.

The previous works of author Lovering that I have read were fantasy, but the young author was able to bring about a realistic feel for her characters and the world they live in. Thus, with Alone being in an already realistic world the believability of her creations were even more intense. The attention to detail is spot on and adds to the story rather than detracts by giving us information that is not needed. I love the inner monologue that Willow has with herself, it easily tear at the heartstrings as we silently plea for her to find her way.

A well written look into the heart and mind of a trouble young woman doing all she can to find herself and become the woman she is destined to be.

'Alone' is an excellent book. A true book about how alone we all can feel at times. Willow is an amazing character. I loved how the author had a story to tell that I would be so touched by. The impact we can have on people without realizing it is profound. Not a sappy story, just a well written story that will surely touch you in some aspect. I'm sure I'll read 'Alone' again. I love it. An awesome book. Definitely recommended

Though not perfect, this book was a wonderful read. I liked the storyline and way that the author ended it. I also loved the emotion that went into this and the genuinity of the characters. I didn't find anything very surprising about the storyline though and had it figured out pretty quickly. I had a hard time with the lack of dialog during portions of the story. Worth the read.

I thought it was a good book... However, I read a book a couple of years ago called Willow and she cut herself in the book so.. not sure where the editor was in catching that. It great that the author can draw you into her world!

Story didn't even get interesting until halfway through. The misspellings and grammatical errors were appalling. Reading this was more of a chore than anything.
