Attorney Kali O'Brien faces one of the most challenging cases of her career when Lisa Cornell and her little daughter are murdered and former classmate Wes Harding is accused of the crime, and as she tries to prove Wes's innocence, Kali races against time to find a devious killer before she becomes the next victim. Reprint.
Kali has remained in her hometown in her childhood house. Now she has her own law practice. Her friend Sam, who helped her get started has asked a favor of her. She doesn't want to disappoint him but being asked to represent someone she believes is guilty doesn't sit well with her either. Wes Harding has been arrested and is awaiting trial for a murder of a mother and her child. All the evidence points to Wes but is circumstantial at best. But with no other suspects and the town rallying around troublemaker Wes as the guilty party Kali has her work cut out for her. Proving Wes didn't do it or at least finding another suspect to put in the mix is her only hope. Kali finds interviewing people in town very difficult, no one wants to help or get involved since they believe the guilty party is already behind bars. Wes himself doesn't seem all that interested in proving himself innocent. But Kali doesn't give up. She's smart, she senses people are lying to her, she starts to believe in Wes' innocence. Looking into the background of the victims leads to many interesting questions. This was a very thorough mystery with many twists and a whole lot of conflicting facts. It was interesting to follow Kali through the process as she wound her way through this mystery.
This is a B grade mystery with some technical problems about DNA analysis that might be because it was published in 1979. It's fine for a beach or plane ride, but overall not satisfying.
the lawyer that moved back to her home town after her dad died got on a case with a old lawyer friend . she was defending a man she went to hs with that was accused of murdering a waitress and her daughter. turned out it was the man who killed her aunts husband when she was a little girl and she saw it. that man later became the accused mans stepfather. he also killed the psyc that was helping the waitress with her migraines to find out what old memories were causing it. he tried to kill the lawyer too but ended up taking his own life. i like this series

EVIDENCE OF GUILT - VG Jacobs, Jonnie - 2nd in Kali O'Brien series
Attorney Kali O'Brien took the fast track to a prestigious San Francisco law firm but burned out and wound up back in her rural California hometown, working on ho-hum wills and trusts. She's happy enough, but then a career-making, high-profile case comes along. Wes Harding, an old acquaintance, is accused of brutally killing Lisa Harding and her five-year-old daughter. The town is up in arms, the prosecutor is set to ask for the death penalty, and Wes is singularly uncooperative as Kali tries to construct his defense. Convinced that Wes is covering up for the real murderer, Kali continues to investigate, setting up a fine climax in which she confronts the killer.
Of her two series, I definitely prefer this one. Good suspense, well done plot.
San Francisco attorney Kali O' Brien races against time to untangle a complex murder case. When Lisa Cornell and her five-year-old daughter are killed, Wes Harding, a former classmate of Kali's, becomes the prime suspect. Kali agrees to assist her long-time legal mentor on the case but is stunned when Harding refuses to help his own defense and won't explain why. Kali soon discovers that Lisa Cornell harbored secrets of her own -- including a mysterious link to a long-ago tragedy.
Recently on my trip to the library, rather than just perusing the new release shelf, I decided to just browse the shelves in search of a novel to read...I picked this unknown sleeper of a book...what a find...well written with twists and turns to keep you guessing...read it in one day...
I was wrapped up in the mystery from the beginning. I liked the characters, and I was surprised when the murderer’s identity was revealed. The clues were all there, they were just skillfully hidden.
Kali O’Brien has returned to her home town after leaving a prestigious job in San Fransisco. Running her own show is good, but getting business is hard. She agrees to help out an old friend with a case defending a killer the whole town thinks is guilty. The case may be high profile, but not everyone is happy that she’s involved.
I recommend this if you like a cozy mystery with an edge.
I don't want to prattle on, just to say that it is an intelligent story line, that is plausible throughout and a pleasure to read. If you like crime who done its, then you will enjoy this read.
Kali O'Brien. Good book. Kali is attorney and representing a man she is wary of - she went to school with him. He is accused of murdering a mom and daughter. Turns out his well-respected dad did it.
