Schoolteacher, single mother, and detective extraordinaire, Kate Austen thinks her life cannot get much worse, until Julie Harmon, one of her students, is murdered, and as Kate unearths some startling secrets about Julie's past, she must race against time to unmask a killer. Reprint.
Kate is teaching art at the local high school for a semester, and while most of the kids in her beginner class are just fulfilling a requirement, Julie Harmon catches Kate's eye as someone who holds some promise. The community is on alert when a college co-ed is found killed nearby, and when Julie is found killed in the same manner, tensions and fears run high. Kate takes a personal interest as she felt like Julie, right before being killed, was about to confide something to Kate. And, let's be honest, Kate can't help but get involved. Kate soon discovers that Julie wasn't your run-of-the-mill teenager and the secrets she had; someone else didn't want to be revealed.
This was a quick, enjoyable read. Despite the age of this title, it doesn't feel as dated as I would expect. That's a pleasant surprise.
kate is working as a art teacher in the high school. a student came to her to talk but they didnt have time. her mom had died and was being raised by a aunt and uncle who were overly strict and didnt really love her. she was found murdered in the same way another girl was killed . the police did not find the killer yet. kates mother in law came to stay with her on a visit. she is still raising the teen from the last book. kates cop boyfriend moved in, but he moved out till the mother in law goes home. she still hopes kate will get back with her son for her granddaughters sake but thats not going to happen. i thought he had married the 'bimbo' so im not sure about that part.
turns out she was trying to find her real dad. he was in politics and didnt want to say he was her dad till after the election but by that time she was murdered by her half sister who didnt want to share her with her dad. the other girl was killed by one of the hs teachers

Would give 3.5 stars if I had the option. The writing is not fantastic, but not as twee as "amateur sleuth mom" books can be, the plot gets uglier than such books often get, and the characters end up being more multifaceted than I expected at first.
This was a well written book. Interesting characters and just love The family. Complicated to say the least but everything ran well together and it was a mystery after all. Cannot wait for the next book.
