If this pup doesn't get found fast, her feisty younger sister could be on the hook for a life-threatening crime…

Manchester, England, 1960s. Miss Riddell has no taste for modern fashions. Which gives her yet another bone to pick with the youngest and wildest family member whom she blames for their father's recent death. But the stern-minded amateur sleuth puts aside her grievances when her sibling is accused of stealing a murderous mobster's dog.

Teaming up with her sister and a now-retired friend from the police force, Miss Riddell discovers that the former cop is hot on the tail of a vanished feline film star. And as this unlikely trio of investigators chases two sets of paw prints across the city, she and her partners run headlong into a dastardly plot.

Can youthful impetuosity combined with seasoned caution save the four-legged day?

Miss Riddell and the Pet Thefts is the lighthearted fifth book in the Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries series. If you like quirky teams, mafia mix-ups, and the Swinging Sixties, then you'll love P.C. James's furry frolic.

Don’t let the title fool you - these pets are to die for!

A fun, cozy mystery with high stakes…

Pauline and her sister are at odds over lifestyle choices and family obligations. Ramsay’s dealing with what to do with himself in retirement.

And in the midst of it all, a beloved dog of a gangland criminal and a radio-famous cat on the verge of television stardom - not only do these particular pets go missing. The pet-nappers demand a ransom!

Jane Riddell finds herself a suspect on the dangerous pooch owners’ list. She needs her name erased from that list before the nefarious owner tries to erase her.

Ramsay stumbles on a first private investigator case when a not-well-designed hiking trip results in some new friends - including a new companion for his walks. And a recommendation to the famous cat’s sitter.

Pauline and Ramsay are surprisingly (to them) reunited as their individual cases collide.

Definitely another warm and wonderful entry in the Miss Riddell series. You won’t want to miss it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest book in the Miss Riddell mystery series. This time she teams up with now retired Chief Inspector Ramsey to investigate a pair of pet nappings. Not only is a large ransom in play, but someone's life could be in danger if the missing poodle and cat are not found.

But the biggest threat to life and limb is the hilarious interplay between our main character Pauline and Jane, her young, fun loving, live life to the max sister. The two siblings could not be more different and soon get on each other's nerves. Forget about the risk of bodily harm from gangsters and kidnappers, the real question for me was will Pauline and Jane end up killing one another before they solve the two crimes!?

As usual there are dead ends and false trails as the sisters, ably aided by Ramsey and his adorable dog Bracken, hunt for the kidnappers and seek to save the missing animals. Another well-written, easy-to-read, and highly enjoyable cozy mystery from author P.C. James.

The Cat’s Meow

I have to admit, I was a bit leery to read a mystery about pet thefts but because I enjoyed the previous Miss Riddell books I thought I would give it a go. Although parts of it were somewhat discombobulated, I must say, it was a fun & interesting story. I enjoyed the reunion of the two main characters and getting acquainted with Pauline’s wild and wooly sister.

This is a mystery within a mystery. The theft of the pets is baffling. The character dynamics with Pauline, her sister Jane and the retired detective give the story an edge of your seat read. This is entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.

Muita confusão envolvendo sequestro de animais e gangsters que se consideram acima da lei, em uma outra narrativa de detetives, desta vez envolvendo a irmã da protagonista. Gostei bastante de Bracken, o cachorrinho “investigador”. Muito bom.
