Fifteen brand new stories of the murky depths with monsters, selkies, mermaids, sea creatures, pirates and a variety of distinctly fishy goings on in the latest collection from Wyldblood Press. We've got uplifting stories, unnerving stories and tales that are just downright bizarre. And who's to say this is fantasy? Four fifths of our oceans have yet to be explored and we can barely imagine what might exist own where the pressure would crush you instantly and the midnight black goes on for ever.
After you’ve read these stories you’ll never look at the sea in the same way again.
It's difficult to rate an anthology because naturally, you aren't going to like everything in it. The voices and styles of contributors are just too varied for that. On the whole, however, this wasn't it for me. Which is a shame; I was so looking forward to it. I've been dying for seaside creepiness, and while a few of these delivered, the vast majority didn't. Of the 15 stories, one was devastatingly good, one nice, a handful passable; 4 were straight up DNFs, which left a couple that I'm not going to attempt, given how unfortunate the balance is for me personally.
On a technical level, there were also a ton of errors and formatting inconsistencies in my copy. It felt as though the publisher rushed to get this out and didn't bother to look it over a second time. That's no reflection on the authors, but it did (negatively) impact my reading, so I felt it was worth mentioning.
A fantastic selection of stories featuring a variety of creatures from the deeps. Lovecraftian horror rubs shoulders with romance, adventure, and numinous mysteries.
