I read this for my Apol 104 class at liberty. I mean this book wasn't that bad to read, even though I got bored at times reading it, but it was an interesting book to read even though some parts were boring I'll give this a four star.
this book wasn't that boring as this other book I had to read but it was alright some chapters of the book caught my attention where some chapters of the book didn't but it was interesting to read in my opinion.
A few takeaways: 1. 30% of this content was fire, didn’t care for the other parts as much. Really interesting they framed up worldviews (naturalism, pantheism vs theism) as a way of understanding people first.
2. Gaps in moral/ subjective relativism and why people choose it- “It should be noted that people generally want to live by a subjective morality, but they want to be treated according to an objective reality.” A Subjective relativist is contradicting by believing there are no absolutes, while letting individuals determine right vs. wrong.
3. This is a dangerous stance because you can justify nearly any crime under this worldview. It puts too much emphasis on the individual and not on the society to hold them accountable. The bottom line is that we should be weary of subjective relativists because if that view is adopted on a large scale, we could be setting ourselves up for a culture of emotion-driven behavior (especially for Gen Z pray for us all)
4. At best, this view can accommodate for a wide variety of belief systems, cultures. Etc. At worst, a catalyst for moral chaos and a moving target of morality. I reread this chapter about 15 times and still feel like I’m in Inception, but they did a good job of delineating the differences and gaps.
5. Thankful for a belief system that doesn’t fluctuate on culture or individual desire- could you imagine the chaos? I’m still not over the fact that so many people support this and don’t see the ramifications. I can see more of our generation headed this direction, to make a massive display of including everyone and being tolerant of all beliefs. Obviously we can love people while disagreeing with them, unfortunately it comes at the expense of being categorized as exclusive and intolerant Christians. But then it goes back to whether we’re here to please others or be made holy.
Everyone is entitled to their informed opinion. (My opinion)
“People don’t understand the value of salvation until they understand their lostness.”
“Truth is not something that is relative to a person’s opinion. It is not based upon where a person grows up or their perception of reality. It is not based upon one’s feelings or attitudes. Truth is not created, but it can be discovered regardless of one’s current cultural understanding of the term.”
This is my second time reading this book and got much more out of it this time. I believe it is a fundamental book for Christians, whether new or mature. I found it to be well-written and enjoyable, but mostly it was encouraging and felt like it guided me through the different topics to provide a much broader scope and deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian. I highly recommend it.
Consider has some great information for understanding various worldviews and fallacies in logic. It's not too heavy in terminology so you don't have to be a theologian to read it and grasp it. The truths are timeless.
