Charlotte Rush would be the first to admit that her life is no rollercoaster ride. Her days are laced with ordinary and at times boring monotony. But with a heart that finds itself frequently broken she's happy to say that she's content.
When her friends convince her to spend the night out at a club to let loose and maybe even find a guy, she finally admits that her life might be missing something.
No sooner does she let go of her inhibitions does she find herself waking up in a dark hotel room in the presence of Joel, a man who carries mystery in his eyes and familiarity in his smile. Against reason Charlotte decides to trust him based solely on one thing. Somehow, she is sure that she knows him.
In a race against time to find answers and to solve the crime committed against her Charlotte finds herself falling for him. However, with nothing but mystery surrounding him she can't even be sure that he's the hero at all. While knowing all of the right things to say he still manages to tell her nothing. As a battle is waged over the innocence of her cryptic stranger, Charlotte discovers that much greater danger awaits her. And the mysteries behind who and what Joel is will lead Charlotte to discover that heaven and earth are not so far apart.
It is my hope to provide motivation for fellow authors who continue to polish their voice and work on their craft. I want to inspire as many writers as I can to view their work as an ongoing journey. You never know which step you are on in achieving your dreams, all you can do is to keep pressing forward. Looking back shows you how far you've come, and looking ahead gives you direction, but the most important part of the journey is where you are right now. Never stop striving, live without regret, and use both your experience and your dreams for the future to shape what you're doing right now.
"The longer I looked into his eyes the more I felt that he was leading me down a road that I was determined not to follow."

3.5 Rating - I’d wanted to read this book for a while after seeing a few good reviews around so I was more than thrilled to receive it for review and I’m glad it didn’t disappoint.
This story follows Charlotte Rush, a college student who lives with her two best friends and doesn’t trust men. On a night out, Charlotte is drugged in a night club but she is rescued by a mysterious stranger named Joel. As Charlotte tries to get to know Joel better, she soon realises that he’s hiding many secrets from her, secrets that are highly dangerous. But for Charlotte, even though she doesn’t have all the answers about Joel, she can’t stop herself falling for him.
Volition is a captivating and mysterious story and when I say mysterious I mean it, lol. When I started reading this book, all I knew about it was what I’d read on Goodreads. If you take a look at it, it’s a big blurb but it doesn’t really give you any indication as to what the story is actually about. Well…….let me tell you this…..it’s about Angels. Yep, I said it….Angels! I didn’t even think this book was supernatural so I was more than a little shocked to find out it was. Nonetheless, Shawn Maraval has written an interesting, exciting and lovable story, one that is full of suspense, mystery and totally compelling.
The story starts off quiet slowly but although it’s slow, I felt it’s was at a good pace in order to get to know the characters. Charlotte is a well-developed character who is totally lovable and Joel…..well, let’s just say he’s wow! Straight away you can feel the undeniable attraction between the two and the suspense of their relationship is amazing, it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat.
The story itself was really interesting; I felt it slightly slowed down in the middle but only to pick straight back up again towards the end. I enjoyed the other added story lines with Charlotte’s parents and her battle with the night club owner. But it’s that cliff-hanger at the end…. It’s definitely one that will leave you shocked.
Overall, as a reader you can tell a lot of hard work has gone into this story and I for one think Shawn deserves a round of applause. So if you’re looking for something new and fresh to read this summer, then this is the book for you.
So where should I start with this book? Well it's amazing we could start there, or we could start with it's incredible ? hmm I think you get my point. Charlotte doesn't trust men, all they end up doing is causing pain, so what's the point? Well, all that thinking was before Joel..she doesn’t know what it is about Joel, her friends don't trust him...and Charlotte knows there is something off about him, but she can't get past the feeling that she knows him from somewhere, maybe a past life? Maybe he just reminds her of someone? She's not sure. As things start to steam up between Charlotte and Joel more and more questions are left unanswered. Charlotte can't help, but fall for Joel though even with all the mystery that is surrounds him.
This book was a little slow at first, but it picks up towards the middle/end, Charlotte has even more stress in her life than just trying to figure out what the deal is with Joel, she is also fighting a legal case against a scum bag club owner Matt Copper, trying to keep her parents calm, and finishing up her degree in art. Joel, is deff drool worthy in this awesome love story and I am sure if you pick this book up it will not disappoint (:
I would deff Recommend this book if you like Hush Hush, or Fallen (:
-Oh AND can I just say this book has the most amazing ending ever?!?! It will literally blow your mind (:
Do you have someone at your side who gives you comfort? Someone you can rely on and trust wholeheartedly? Not only Charlotte, our main character in this fantastic story, is going to ask herself this question. The reader as well will find himself thinking about themes like trust and friendship. I am not going into detail or spoil anything, you have to enjoy and read it on your own. Lets just say Charlotte has an encounter which is going to change everything and soon decisions are to make which raise her and the readers heartbeat. You know that a book is good if you can recommend it to everyone, this is one of it. As a fan of crime novels I absolutely enjoyed the tension around one of the characters and the serious main topic in it.Serious main topic? Yes, but dont worry, it is presented in a very good way. Thought provoking and not boring.Perfect included in the main story so that the reader gets hooked into it. Equally to this, I never enjoyed a love story so much. Oops, did I give something away? ;) It just felt good reading it, in fact I devoured this book. It felt real and the humour made it lively, as a guy this is very important for me to enjoy a romance.Long story short, go read it and I am fired up for the sequel!
First off, I just wanted to say that this book is AWESOME!!!! I love every part of it. The romance, the action, and def the unexpected surprises. This books picks up right at the start. I love the relationship between Charlotte and Joel, it's so cute. Joel has to be the BEST boyfriend EVER! :D He's always so sweet and considerate. For some reason I just love forbidden romances because it just makes the books all the more romantic and interesting. All thoughout this book are twists and turns and ups and downs that keep you always wanting more. This book def has some surprising events happen. My favorite part has to be the very end, like the last two pages, because it was so surprising and it totally caught me off guard and made me want to read the second book to find out more and what happens. All I can say is, go buy this book right now!!! :D 5 stars for sure!
If I had to describe this book in one word it would have to be captivating. This book blew me away. I am not a reader, and never have been. However when my friend recommeneded Volition to me, I thought I would give it a chance. When I began reading this book I just knew that I was hooked. Shawn Maravel's unique styling of writing allowed me to relate to the characters and their feelings. I felt as if I was with Charlotte every step of the way. I could not put the awesome read down. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable read. But let me warn you, you will want to read this book and the following book Severance. Shawn Maravel really knows how to keep the reader interested with the cliff hangers!
""I always thought the world made sense, Charlotte, that there are certain things that will just never be," he leaned his head against mine "that the sky and the earth run parrellel to one another, never meant to touch. But that's not true. They've always been embracing it's just so natural we never notice it before.""
****
I have been waiting to have Volition and Severence ever since Shawn Maravel befriended me on Goodreads, and when I read Hayley's review on her blog, Ya-Aholic. I saw that is was about angels and instantly fell in love even though I never read the words written inside yet. Angels and anything to do with angels is my very deep obsession ever since I had a couple freak accidents that were too bizarre to explain how I came out with just a few scars to hardly no scars at all. Being a bit religious, I automatically assumed I had a very generous guardian angel, and being the hopeless romantic that I am, I love the romantic stories between an angel and a human being. Shawn Maravel's assumption on angels had me yearning for every word of this story. The chemistry and emotions between Joel and Charlotte was so astonishing I had to remind myself that they were not real and just characters. Shawn created a very beautiful love story between a guardian angel and the love of his life, the very reason he exists.
Charlotte is a 23 year old college senior, who has had her hear broken countless times by nothing but a couple of jerks. It is very hard for her to trust any guy for that matter. Until she meets Joel, in the most strangest of circumstances. She instantly trusts him, even when her friends don't, and she seems to know him from some where but cannot place where she has met this strange man. Even if she has met him before, she would have definitely rememebered those green eyes anywhere. She cannot seem to figure out why he is so shielded with information and why with every question he answers isn't quite the answer she was looking for. Even with the mystery that coats Joel, she cannot help but fall for him and his strange ways.
Overall: This book was nothing short of amazing, and had me yearning for every word up until the very end. At first the story was slow, but picked up right when Joel entered the picture. The writing style was all Shawn's and the plot along with characters were nothing but original. The plot was well thought out and even though I knew what Joel was from the geico it had me guessing if Joel could be trusted at first or if Joel really was what he said he was. I never saw the end coming and it had the most craziest twist I would have never predicted. I would recommend this book to any angel lover or any hopeless romantic for that matter! I would definitely read the second in the series, Severence.
Book cover: I love Shawn's new and approved cover rather than the one before, even though it was pretty as well. I feel this one is a lot more personal and has connection to the story. The green is very gorgeous and I love the harmonica.
Charlotte was the kind of girl that gave her all to her relationships. And so far all her rewards had been very painful... That's why she decided to stop dating and protect her heart.
Her job at the bank and art college was everything she needed. But then everything changes when her roommates convince her to go party: in a far corner of the dancefloor she spots a breathtaking man looking at her. Without wanting to make a fool of herself she begins to dance and after a little bit she approaches the bar to get a glass of water (being the designated driver she is not going to drink any alcohol). When the awkward exchange of words with the barman (who gives her the creeps) finishes she turns around and looks for her friends. But suddenly she feels very dizzy and hears the voice of the barman approaching her and knows, instantly, that she has been drugged.
The last thing she sees is the breathtaking man next to her and then her world goes blank.
When she wakes up she is in a hotel room and across the room a pair of mesmerizing eyes looks at her. And her worst fears begin to raise... has she been raped?!
Against all logic and reason she trusts her savior, Joel. Somehow she believes with all her heart that she can trust him, even if she evades almost all her questions. But her friends think very differently. And now she has to find the strength to put an end to that horrible barman before he tries to drug another girl.
Personal opinion: It's been a while since I could enjoy a supernatural book so much for its lack of supernatural stuff... But maybe that's a little bit confusing, right? Perhaps a better way to explain it would be to say that the main plot in Volition was very human and the sub-plot had all the supernatural relevance.
The fact that Charlotte's purpose was to stop the sleazy Matt after his attempt to rape her gave the book more deepness and meaning. At the same time that it touches a very sensitive subject Shawn manages to create characters with whom we can relate and cheer for. And then in the background, appearing in the right moments to keep our curiosity alive and eager for answers, the supernatural touch of the book would make its entrance.
I can say without a doubt that the connection between Charlotte and Joel will warm your heart. It's true that maybe you will discover Joel's identity way before Charlotte but still, their dialogues are entertaining, very real and sweet.
And the ending? I didn't see that coming! It was superb and incredible... a perfect twist that put the whole book in another level.
Volition is the kick-off book to a new series, by a new author, featuring Charlotte, a conservative young woman whose life is drastically changed one night when she is slipped a drug at a club and rescued by a handsome, mysterious stranger. While everything about the stranger is unclear and Charlotte knows she should be wary of him, she can’t help but trust him and her attraction to him. The stranger, Joel, is suddenly a big part of Charlotte’s life as he helps her seek justice for herself and the other girls abused by the man who drugged them. Joel is very different though, some would say he’s out of this world…
I enjoyed this story, I really loved the characters. It did take me a bit to really get to like Charlotte, she is very conservative, and she can be very unsure of herself. However, when she knows what she wants, she really goes for it. She has tenacity when it comes to getting justice, and when it comes to Joel. Joel, I love him, but he was pretty up and down for awhile. He really battles right or wrong over his attraction to Charlotte, and I felt for his situation.
The main problem I had with this book was the detail. There was quite a bit of extra, very detailed information that was not actually needed, and it wound up distracting me from the main story line and plot. There are lots of descriptions about what exactly characters say and do, step by step. I appreciate that I was very aware of what each character was doing and how Charlotte felt every step of the way, but I didn’t need to know what each person ordered at dinner. Also, the extra detail made the plot have a bit of a slower feel, and there really is not a lot of major action in this story.
As I said, I enjoyed this story, and I think that Shawn Kirsten Maravel has promise for an aspiring author. The characters are interesting, I love the paranormal angle, and I felt pretty invested in the characters and their story by the end of the book. Volition is only book 1 in this series, and the ending makes that very clear (little bit of cliff hanger type ending). I will be reading book 2, Severance, soon because I really am anxious to see what happens next for the characters.
"You are mine to protect and I will never be apart from you"
Volition is about Charlotte Rush, a college student, who lives with her two friends. One night her friends decide they want to take her out to a club. She is reluctant at first, but then decides to go. While at the club, Charlotte is drugged. All she remembers is waking up in a hotel room with a mysterious guy, Joel, whom she has never met before. At first she is scared not knowing what this man did to her, but for some reason she is certain that she can trust him. The novel takes us through the building relationship of Charlotte and Joel and the search for the man who drugged Charlotte. Throughout, Charlotte learns things about Joel that she would have never thought could ever be true.
WOW! I really enjoyed this book!! Ever since I first heard about this book a few months ago I have been dying to read it. It was definitely better then I thought it would be. I really liked Charlotte and Joel as individual characters but I also loved them together! I could not put the book down. I had to know what would happen next. This was the perfect book to read while a hurricane was going on and we had no power. :) Charlotte was such a relatable character and Joel was an amazing guy!
The ending was awesome. I was not expecting it at all. I am so glad I ordered both books at once because I will be reading Severance next! I can't wait to see what happens!
I have never read a book in this genre, and was not really sure what to expect. I found that the main character was relatable (good to read a character who is just as cursed as me at times). She was real, funny, and like the rest of us just trying to understand love while figuring out who we are as we leave the world of college. I found myself giggling to myself at the author's wit, and one of the conversations that the main character has with a friend of hers, I had with one of my friends, naming their car. The plot will have you turning the page, wondering where the author is going to take you. Honestly did not see the twist at the end coming, and that usually doesn't happen! Really wish I had bought the second book when I bought this one so I could find out what happens! Can't wait to see more from this author :)
Volition is a romance novel wrapped up in an angora sweater, to be savored like a warm fire and a cup of hot cocoa on a rainy day. Charlotte is a girl longing for more and when it comes, it's like a blessing from on high. Joel is everything a girl could ask for and more, but like the mysterious new man in her life, there's more going on in Charlotte's world than meets the eye, including a mystery and a breathtaking twist. So cuddle up with this book and enjoy a wonderful read. Highly recommended!
Charlotte Rush is a 23-year old college student and bank teller. She's also a quiet, laid-back kind of gal.
On a rare outing to a night club with her girlfriends, Charlotte is drugged. The last thing she hears before passing out completely is the skeevy bartender's voice, than everything goes black. Charlotte then wakes up in a hotel room with a mysterious stranger who calls himself Joel. Joel doesn't hurt her, and claims that “protecting” her was and is his only concern. After a lame attempt at getting away, Charlotte passes out again only to wake up back in her own bed safe and sound.
After taking precautionary measures at the hospital (and conveniently leaving Joel out of it), Charlotte goes about her regular day. That's when she comes across Joel for the second time; as a nude model in her art class.
Charlotte feels drawn to him and decides she needs answers about what really happened that night. Little does she know, she is about to learn a lot more than that. Joel isn't just a regular guy - he's something more, something special, something altogether heavenly.

Oh, I loved this book so so much!
My only complaints would be the large amount of grammatical and typographical errors, and that the criminal trial in the book is a tad on the unrealistic side. It felt too forced.
Characters - I loved the characters! Charlotte was the perfect protagonist. I liked her personality, she is my kinda gal! She would much rather enjoy a nice night at home with a good book over partying it up in a night club. She's charming and sweet, stubborn and just insecure enough that it felt realistic. I get tired of YA protagonists being SO insecure about everything. It makes me sick. Joel - well, he was actually the opposite of what I normally like in my hero. He is innocent beyond anything I've ever read, he's so compassionate it brought me to tears. He's gentle and kind, loving and even shy at times. I loved him! He's definitely at the top of my swoon-worthy heroes list.
Plot - It's been done, but never quite like this. Joel has watched over Charlotte before she was even born, and now that he gets to know her as a woman, he falls in love with her and she with him. It's so sweet that it had me in tears. Yes, TEARS. I cried at least three times while reading this book. I don't want to give away too much, but it's amazing, just amazing. The events that happen after Charlotte finally finds out what Joel truly is.. are so beautiful. I can honestly say that I've never felt quite so moved by this type of book before. There was just something so incredibly beautiful about the love between Charlotte and Joel. It's pure and destined. It was just the perfect romance, with a tragic ending. I started reading Severance immediately after I finished this. I couldn't go even a minute without finding out what happened! I feel like all I am doing is babbling here, but it was just that great. I don't have the proper words to describe it.
Overall - You just need to give this book a chance. It's in an adult setting but, in my opinion, it's safe for teens to read. There is mild language and some mention of rape, but it's not graphic at all. It's an absolutely beautiful love story. It stole my breath away and I think it'll steal yours too. ♥
Quotes I loved:
“Sometimes love means doing what's best for the one who holds your heart. Sometimes it means denying your own pleasure to grant them the life they were meant to live.”
“The longer I looked into his eyes the more I felt that he was leading me down a road that I was determined not to follow.”
“Every time we touched I left a piece of myself with him. If I wasn't careful, he'd have all of me, ...”
“Stupid girl, I thought. How many hands must he have held before mine? How many girls must have fallen for a lifetime into those bright green eyes only to hit rock bottom.”

Ebook received in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to Shawn Kirsten Maravel!
This book was pretty good, and I will be reading Severance, but there were a few negative things that stood out to me. First of all, Maravel gives way too much detail about, well, everything, from Charlotte's daily life to the snow on the ground. She just over does it, and it pulled me out of the story a lot. Because of the over-describing, the novel moved slowly up until the end. The ending, however, was intense.
Charlotte is a bit of a boring character. She reminded me of myself, just more normal, and I know I'm boring. I would have liked to see more flair in her personality, but she may grow as the series progresses. Joel was all right, but he didn't exactly blow me away. Charlotte's friends and co-workers were kind of strange. A lot of the interactions in this novel didn't fit in the normal section of the bell curve of normal behavior. And a lot of the interactions and reactions didn't seem believable to me. That also took away from the story. When Charlotte, who has been drugged, instantly trusts Joel, whom she woke up next to the morning after, it is just strange. I wouldn't have trusted him; I would have kicked him in his business and ran out the door to call the police. Especially given Charlotte's history with men, it just didn't click for me. It was like that with many of the interactions and reactions, but in an effort not to spoil the novel, I won't go into further detail.
Another thing that, in my opinion, could have been improved upon is the whole mystery/adventure aspect of the book. They're trying to find out who drugged Charlotte and why. That's all fine and good, but it's an incredibly mundane "adventure" for a paranormal book. Maybe I've been spoiled, but I prefer the save the world, good vs. evil battles that I've seen in so many paranormal and fantasy novels. It's just more intense, and I feel like more is at stake. Since I only had lukewarm feelings for Charlotte, I didn't really care who drugged her or why. Maybe if the entire planet had been at risk, I would have cared more. Maybe not.
All of that being said, Maravel's writing is excellent, and she's onto a good idea with this series. The ending was exciting and interesting, and once things started picking up, I couldn't put the book down. Also, since University of Michigan is one of the graduate schools I'm applying to, that made me have at least a bit of a connection with Charlotte. It's not that this book is bad. It's actually quite good, especially for a first novel, but from the glowing reviews I'd read about the novel, I just expected more. Because of the hype, I was disappointed. If I had gone into this book without any idea about what anyone else thought, I probably would have given it a higher grade. I do recommend it to anyone who's a fan of paranormal mysteries, but I'd have to warn you to stay away from the reviews before reading this book. Over all, well done, Shawn.
Volition was kindly provided to me by the author, Shawn Kirsten Maravel in exchange for my honest review.
Charlotte Rush is a College student and works part-time as a bank teller; she lives a quiet and at times mundane life and lives with her two best friends.
On a reluctant night out dancing, Charlotte has her drink spiked but before losing consciousness is rescued by a stranger named Joel, she has no idea what he has done to her or with her when she wakes up in a hotel room and panics but he seems sincere with helping her to recover and returning her home.
It isn’t until she returns to her art class that she sees Joel again – posing nude, she feels a pull toward him and seeks to get answers on what happened on that fateful night.
I initially had no idea what Volition was about, and throughout the story I was intrigued, Joel was truly a mystery – he was noble, caring, good-looking and kind but also evasive when it came to answering questions about himself.
I liked the main protagonist, she reminded me a little of myself with her social behavior; give me a good book and a night in over going out any day. She was lovable and kind, she’d had her heart broken in the past so was surprised by her feelings towards Joel but there was no denying the attraction between them.
The pacing for me was initially slow but soon picked up, I was so anxious for Joel to spill the beans on who or what he was. The investigation with the nightclub owner was interesting although at times too detailed. I enjoyed the twists and turns in Volition and was truly shocked by the reveal at the end.
Ms Maravel has created a loving story about a mortal and ‘someone else’, I don’t want to reveal who or what Joel is or the connection he shares with Charlotte because finding out is all the more important and special with this story.
The plot was enjoyable and Ms Maravel’s writing is engaging; I liked the main characters and thought each of the secondary characters also played an important part in this story.
We are left with a cliff-hanger so I am now eager to get started on Severance, the sequel. I truly hope there is some way Charlotte and Joel can find a permanent way to be together.
Volition is romantic, exciting, and full of brilliant morals. I went into it not really sure what to expect, and I ended up loving the story as it was revealed.
We start off with Charlotte, who is what you would call the all around good girl. She works her butt off, attends college, lives with her friends, while not getting into anything "bad". Her friends finally convince her to let it all go for once and go out clubbing. Realizing it may be exactly what she needs, Charlotte goes. But everything seems to fall down hill from there. Charlotte gets drugged and ends up in a hotel room with a mysterious guy named Joel. He saved her, and he asks her to trust him... but Charlotte isn't so sure. So when Joel starts showing up more in her life, she believe that he did really save her, but if that's true, then that means that someone else is after her.
One of the things that I absolutely loved about this story was even though it has it's paranormal side to it, it is SO real. Real college life. Real work life. Real hardships. Real friends. And I absolutely loved that fact. The main character is 23, attending college and working her butt off, and I can completely relate to that.
I also really enjoyed all the characters. I loved Charlotte's hard-working personality. Her strength in everything that she's thrown into in such a short time. The fact that she's always been capable of handling herself. Charlotte's roommates Emily and Tara also made the story what it was. They're both beautiful and outgoing, yet they're the type of friends you'd always want to have around you. On the work side, I have to admit I loved Heather! I thought she was so funny yet understanding when she needed to be. Another character I found myself liking was Alex. I know, I know... but there was something about him I was definitely drawn to. Finally, Joel. I loved Joel. Not only is he sexy as heck with bright green eyes. His soul purpose is protecting Charlotte, and he always does it in the sweetest ways. You cannot help but fall for him. I loved watching Joel and Charlotte become closer.
Overall, this book was a quick, charming, yet intense read. I have to admit the ending was a jaw-dropper. I honestly didn't see it coming at all. And, I absolutely love being pleasantly surprised like that! Cannot wait to read Severance!
First thoughts: I was positively surprised by Volition and I'm definitely looking forward to start its sequel soon, especially since the ending broke my heart a little bit. Its exciting plot and Shawn's beautiful style of writing turned this into a fast and easy read and made me wish to find out more about Charlotte and Joel soon.
More detailed: Volition turned out to be a complete surprise for me. Even though I had read reviews about it a while ago, I somehow believed it to be a contemporary story. You can imagine my surprise, when I detected the first hints for a paranormal story and my happiness when these paranormal hints turned out to be true.
Charlotte is a quite intriguing character. One night changes her life completely and forces her to question herself and her decisions. I loved witnessing the story from her point of view, although at some points I grew a little bit tired of her mood swings: it seemed as though she couldn't really make up her mind what to feel/think. But at the same time she has a pleasant voice and this makes following her story very easy.
Joel, Charlotte's saviour, is the big mystery of Volition. Despite various hints being thrown in the reader's direction, it takes about 80% of the novel until we definitely find out more about his secret. At that point it was no longer a surprise and I wished that it had been unveiled earlier. But he's definitely a very crush-worthy male fictional character, especially since it's nice to have a "nice guy" to swoon over. There are many things I'd like to know about him and I'm looking forward to see his relationship to Charlotte develop.
Shawn Kirsten Maravel's writing style is absolutely gorgeous and I fell in love with it even before I started to crush on Joel. It's beautiful and detailed, but it doesn't overwhelm you with unnecessary information. All in all, I really enjoyed Volition and can definitely recommend this for others who are looking for a beautifully written, paranormal novel which doesn't rely on the bad-boy-cliché.
Note: I would recommend this novel for an older audience (16+) since the topic of rape is mentioned at some points.
Warning: this book deals with some darker themes of a serious nature.(rape/attempted rape)
I really enjoyed Volition. I know that may sound strange after you just read the warning above, but this book isn't so much about rape and the victims as it is about love and becoming a strong, good person. Charlotte has been through a lot. She doesn't even like to go out to clubs, and the one night that her friends finally drag her out, something awful almost happens to her. The rest of the book deal with the aftermath of this night, including a strange new addition to her life- Joel.
Joel is one of those guys that is so perfect. He is too good to be true. Granted, Joel has a reason for being so utterly good, and even though it’s a "secret" it was pretty obvious to me right away. I love how innately good Joel is and how much he cares for Charlotte, but I would have liked to see a few more faults in him. Something to make him seem a little more realistic. But it is pretty hard to not like Joel; he is just so loyal. I'm glad that even though Charlotte was smitten with Joel from about day 2, she still realized how strange his appearance in her life was. I would like to think I would act logically too and not get swept up in the romance of it all if a strange man "saved" me and promptly took me straight to a hotel room and then proceeded to have many unexplained occurrences surrounding him. But even though Charlotte tried to act rationally, she just couldn't stay away from Joel. But the more I got to see the two of them together, the less it bugged me.
I really liked that the whole trial process was explained and that we got to know some of the other girls that this had happened to. And then the end of the book was like a whirlwind. Most of the book is set at a moderate pace, but the ends sped things up considerably. All of a sudden a bunch of stuff was happening that I totally didn't see coming! The ending totally shocked me, and left me really wanting to read the second book to see how the story would all end. Even with its serious themes and nature, Volition was a really sweet romance to me. I really hope everything works out for Joel and Charlotte in the next book.
First, let me start off this review by saying that I am not a huge religious person. There is a lot of talk about God, higher beings and how everything happens for a reason. I was a little nervous when I realized this since I'm not a fan of these types of books. However, I am happy to say that I enjoyed this book and found the story to be engaging regardless.
Without giving too much away, I will say that I liked Joel's character. Charlotte meets Joel the night that a bartender spikes her water with the date rape drug. Joel sees the bartender putting something in her drink and is there to save her for a potential raping. In her efforts to get her bearings, she enlists the help of Joel and they meet up to talk about that night. It doesn't take long for these two to become friends. I must say that I liked the struggle that Joel dealt with when it came to his attraction to Charlotte, it made him more human in my eyes. He doesn't quite understand his attraction to her but with every moment they spend together, he finds himself falling more in love with her.
The trial that ensues from the whole club incident, takes up the length of the book. Joel is convinced that something bad is going to happen to Charlotte and he remains by her side throughout the trial. The connection between these two characters didn't feel rushed or forced. Although I did find a lot of the trial part to be a bit lengthy and not overly necessary.
The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that it could use a good editing. There were a lot of grammar issues. There were words that were missing in a sentence and words that were misspelled. I found at least two mistakes in every chapter. There was also a lot of inner dialect and parts that weren't overly important to the story that could have been cut out.
I am still looking forward to reading the second book in the story. The ending totally surprised me and I'm always happy when a book can do that.
Favorite quote... This may seem like a strange quote but considering my place of employment where I deal with hundreds of people a day from all over the world. I really thought this was funny.
"Are you implying that I don't make each and every customer's day by smiling?"
Volition is the first in a young adult, paranormal romance series by Indie author Shawn Kristen Maravel. This novel offers mystery, crime, and romance with a mysterious stranger.
The main character of this novel is, Charlotte Rush, a conservative art student, and part-time banker. When she and her friends go to a night club, Charlotte is the designated driver. After dancing for hours, she heads off the dance floor to search out her friends. She decides to get a drink of water from the bartender and the next thing she knows, she is waking up in a dark hotel room. Her head hurts, her mouth is dry and there is a complete stranger sitting in the chair by the bed. This mysteries man, with heavenly green eyes and a body resembling a Greek god identifies himself as Joel and tells her that she is safe. Charlotte drifts to sleep again, and when she awakes she is home in her own bed. The tale that unfolds, deals with Charlotte learning about the crime that occurred that night. Despite, the fact that she knows nothing about Joel, she trusts him. ( she has this, niggling feeling, that she has known him forever) Together they gather clues to solve the mystery and stop a criminal.
Overall I enjoyed Volition. The characters were well developed and it had plenty of suspense and mystery. At times, I felt details messed with the flow of the story, and in these areas I skimmed. For example, what everyone was eating or wearing. I will warn you, although this is listed as YA, there is some intimacy.( however no real details are provided). The romance between Charlotte and Joel at first appeared to be insta-love, but actually winds up being so much more.
Volition was a wonderful start to a new series, and I am looking forward to reading book two entitled Severance. I recommend this to fans of paranormal romance. This novel is currently available in paper and eBook formats. I will be adding this author to my watch list.
I want to thank the author for providing this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review.
Volition is like a giant present filled with awesome surprises. It has a little bit of everything, humor, fantasy, realistic events, and relatable characters. This book was extremely captivating. It's written very well and when I started reading I'd just lose track of time and get sucked into the book. I loved the plot it wasn't like anything I've read before. Plus, I found the relationship between Joel and Charlotte to be absolutely ADORABLE. The characters in this book were very realistic and I liked every one (besides one evil man, but you aren't supposed to like him.) All the characters were thought out very well and they each had their own special personalities and they didn't all blur together. Charlotte was a great main character, I could relate to her feelings and I liked her right away. Now, Joel on the other hand is hot. He was the perfect gentlemen and I kept smiling whenever I read about his relationship with Charlotte. It's too cute! The plot was very smooth and unique, there was one thing that was pretty obvious (I'm not going to say what because I don't want to spoil anyone, but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be obvious to the reader or not. Hopefully if you read the book you know what I'm talking about). The only small complaint I have is that sometimes the book was a little slow paced, but the bright side is those slow parts got to show us more of Charlotte's life and we got to know her better. It's not like those parts were boring either, I was too captivated by the writing to notice if it was slow, but looking back I realize some parts were. There was one big twist at the end and the cliffhanger will make you crave the second installment right away, I can't wait to read it!
Volition has everything you'd want in a forbidden romance. There is the chemistry between the characters, the mystery surrounding the handsome stranger, the unexpected dangers, and the humor. Watching the relationship between Charlotte and Joel grow had a magnetism that kept me wanting more. I figured out pretty early what Joel was, and even though I thought it should have been pretty obvious to Charlotte as well, I was still unsure of his true motives. Themes are discussed such as rape that may be suitable for a more mature young adult audience depending on parental preference. This is a serious real life topic, and I thought the discussions were conducted very tastefully with minimal detail. The situations some of the women survived in the book may even offer comfort and support to women who have had similar experiences in real life. This was a highly entertaining and addictive story. There were twists and turns all along the adventure that was reading Volition. Even the ending will leave you with an unexpected twist that will have you running to read Severance, the second book in the series.
While it was based on serious circumstances that can and do happen in our society, it had a heart warming feel to it that kept you grounded.
The characters in the book were very well thought out and worked nicely together. The plot line moved along very smoothly and seamlessly.
The author, Ms. Maravel, did an excellent job of capturing me into her story and keeping me riveted to it. I immediately finished this one and started on the second one because I was excited to see what would happen between Charlotte and Joel!
Excellent work Ms. Maravel and I look forward to reading more of your books!
Do you have someone at your side who gives you comfort? Someone you can rely on and trust wholeheartedly?Charlotte is young lady who goes to collage (finally main girl character who is not teenager!!!) and works in bank. One night her two best friends convince her to go in one club and have fun… but the bartender slips a drug in her drink and after that she wakes up in hotel room with this gorgeous and mysterious guy Joel . The growth and changes that happens between these two will keep you on your toes and counting the days to the next book. You will not be disappointed in this read I HIGHLY recommend you take the time to enjoy it you will not be disappointed .
Hi - I've not yet read "Volition", hope to soon... based on the comments left. Congrats! Just found "Goodreads" by accident, and then clicked my way to your page. Question if I may? Having read your profile - I see that you are a twin. I hope you are close twins - and really value the relationship as with most twins. If so, have you ever thought of writing about that unique separation when you moved overseas? It could be VERY helpful to alot of people. Just a thought. Thanks. Scott.
I really loved Volition! I stayed on my toes pretty much throughout the book. I totally recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a sweet romance.
Charlotte Rush is a very ordinary girl, does the same ol same ol I guess you could say. But one night she goes out with some friends and ends up with a stranger. She knows that she has never seen him before but something about him feels so familiar. In her quest to uncover the mystery of Joel, Charlotte discovers something she didn't expect.
Shawn Maravel's first novel Volition reveals her talent for storytelling. This is a fast-moving read, spellbinding with a surprising ending. I hear she is writing a sequel to it and I can't wait. Her characters are rich and alive on the page. Need a summer book by the pool? This is it!! Jan Marquart
From the beginning of the book I was drawn into both the story and the anticipation of where the story was leading me. I instantly liked the characters of Charlotte and Joel and I wanted to get to know them. There were a few turns that I definitely did not see coming and honestly am so anxious to get to the second book!
