Blue Line Hockey #5

Change on the Fly

Rate this book
From a very young age, Aldrich knew two things—he’d grow up to play professional hockey and he’d make his mentor fall in love with him. After years of hard work, both are within his grasp. Not only has a professional team called him up from his farm club, but the man he’s dreamed of for years has finally noticed him.

Then everything is brutally torn from him when he suffers a career-ending injury and finds himself dumped before the relationship has even really started. Depressed, he retreats to his childhood home where he runs into his former best friend and hockey buddy, Nobel. They rekindle their friendship and grow closer…in more ways than one. Aldrich is shocked to realize that not only has he been overlooking what could be the best thing in his life, but love may have always been right in his own backyard.

Childhood friends become lovers... what's not to like? :-)

Everything is standard for such stories. The fun part is seeing how things are unfolded (how the MCs learn about that his best friend is gay too). Also, a pair of eccentric siblings...

Oh I cried for poor Aldrich (((
What's happened to him is just terrible and that he's had to face the permanent consequences - damn, that's awful! Glad Nobel now is there for him.

I read this some time ago but it seems more relevant with all of the news lately about hockey injuries, the young man who died and it seems his brain is so damaged (possibly from playing hockey) that he likely would have had dementia in middle age, Sidney Crosby who has not played in nearly a year due to a severe concussion and who is not playing yet again due to symptoms and other players who are starting to question if their health is due to injuries sustained "on the job". Not all have the tragic outcome that Aldrich had in this story, of severe medical problems following the injury, but it happens and likely if the player is not super-famous, they just disappear and no one thinks about them again, except their family and friends who put back he pieces.

In this case I really liked that Aldrich did not have any miracle cure. Nobel did not possess the magical healing cock of some romance novels. He would always have impediments as a result of his injury, he'd never be normal, he'd certainly never play hockey again. I also loved that Nobel didn't care. He liked Aldrich, he wasn't ashamed to be out and about with him in public or to acknowledge them as a couple which I think Aldrich needed to see that his life was not over, just very different.

Aldrich's sister was quite the girl with her pink house, and Nobel's flamboyant younger brother was a character who I hope we'll see again. But for those who want a romantic story that includes a darker side of hockey, of those who've had their dreams completely ripped away forever after spending their entire lives, literally fighting for it, it broke my heart a bit, but Nobel was there to help him adapt to his new life. So I think a very timely story these days, with a lovely happy ending as all this author's stories do.

This was a cute, quick read with lots of humor. We have Aldrich the injured athlete. Despite the injury he isn’t whiney but has a inner strength that you can’t help but admire. Nobel is a solid core of dependability and loyalty. The secondary characters were just as well done and added a lot of detail including humor to the story.

While I really enjoyed the character chemistry and the connection between all the characters, I just couldn’t quit believe the insta-love between the main characters. I blame this on the fact that the pace could have been blended better. It chopped up between past, present and future, never quite running smoothly together. In the past we read about Aldrich and how he got his injury and then him in the hospital dealing with the injury. With the present we see Aldrich and Nobel with their lives separately. Then with the future they meet up again and we quickly see them as a couple.

I personally think the author could have fixed this with either making one time line more in-depth or making the book longer. Despite this though it was a pleasant read that left me with a warm fuzzy feeling.

This is the fifth book in the series and is slightly different to the others. This book is a friends-to-lovers story and brings together Aldrich and Nobel. Aldrich is seriously injured and the permanent nature of his injuries means that he cannot play professional hockey again.

It is lovely to see the positive outlook that Aldrich, supported by Nobel, has on his life. The story could have focused on Aldrich's inability to play hockey but focused more on his overcoming a broken heart and learning to trust again.

Yet another lovely Hockey story. I do have to be honest and say that it seems so unrealistic that there could be so many gay hockey players on one team or in one vicinity but that very well could just be my assumption since there aren't any out professional hockey players now. That said, I wish there were because DAMN that is hot. :-)
Really enjoyed Nobel and Aldrich. I love a good Friends to Lovers story.

I love a story about friendship rekindled and friends turning lovers and a realistic story about recovery. This was all of that. I love that the author didn't shrink from giving Aldrich long lasting effects from his accident. I did enjoy this story, although, as with the first in the series, I think the characters coming together happened too abruptly. There were also far less D/s overtones to this book which I enjoyed.

3.5. This is another short story with lots packed in. The ony hockey is right at the start, and its the scene of Aldrich's horrific head injury. The rest of the story starts 3months later so we miss a lot of his recovery but take up once he's out of hospital and reconnecting with his buddy Nobel. Again, an easy read and too much away from the hockey for me but enjoyable all the same.

Aldrich and Nobel. 3.5 maybe 3.75
Another one of those overpriced novellas. But I'm kind of hooked on this hockey theme. This felt like one long scene where they suddenly realize they were made for each other. Tagged on to the end what I assume is the set up for multiple novellas to come.
So it's not bad writing or character development or story, just "wham, bam, thank you m'am".

Sweet m/m romance about an NHL player who sustains a career-ending injury and isn't doing so well until his best friend from high school shows up at his door.

It's a story of two people meant to be together and their journey towards it. There was not much of character development, but given their shared past, their relationship felt very real.
