Fire and Water are forbidden. Sophia Liam and I survived the Elemental Cup, but the tournament was only the beginning. The Koigni Elders were impressed by my performance and believe I can help them take over the entire tribe. But they're asking me to fight for a cause I don't believe in, and forcing me to use my magic in ways that feel wrong. I must learn how to use my powers to contact the ancestors--or I'll lose everyone I love. Liam Sophia Henley's now my girlfriend. And, oh yeah, I'm supposed to kill her. The Water council has promised they'll bring my Familiar back from the dead--my literal soul--if I take Sophia's life. But I love her more than I love myself. How can I make such an impossible decision? Even worse, how could I possibly live without her? But this isn't about us anymore. If I don't fulfill my mission, thousands will die... and Sophia and I are both keeping secrets that will change everything.

The characters act a lot more like high school kids than adults, everyone refusing to confide in anyone, people claiming to be in love not helping the other. Frustratingly stupid decisions abound, particularly in the first half.
I didn't think this installment was as good as the first.
Not sure I'll continue with the series. I wouldn't read these out of order.
“You are my breath… my spirit... and my existence. You are the sunrise every morning and the stars every evening. You are my soulmate and the love of my life. You are my ocean and you keep my world safe. You are beautiful.”

I am truly regretting not read/listening to the first book of this series. This was fantasy vivid, rich, and enticing. I wanted so much more. I just could imaging what book one of the series held for my auditory and visual sensors to experience. Without the first book experience I did feel a bit aloof through some portions of the audio. I was looking for things that had already occurred or were already explained. With that said, I do highly advise experiencing book one first then dive in to the explosion of characters, depth, details, culture, and more.
Dual narration added that extra layer of intimacy with the characters and the vivid depiction of the world that was created for these characters.

this was not ad strong as the last one. waaay to much unsessecary drama. I am here for drama, but only when it is necessary you know. like I get you can fight with your BFF, we all do 🫶 but not for months especially not for such a small thing.
and also. like you can't hide that kind of secret from your boyfriend? like girl it is not that deep. He only got mad because you told him so late!
idk like there was good stuff in here, like the end of the world threat is always fun, but I just got bored during half of it when small things was blown out of proportion. it felt like so much was filler you know.
I'm gonna give it 3 stars and hope they get more emotionally mature and communicate during the next one.
this is not a romcom you guys
also the Mormon elements are not subtle at all. I did not expect that from a fantasy lol
Back at Orenda academy, both Sophia and Liam were looking forward to spend more time with each other... only their houses have different plans. While Sophia is summoned by her elders to pursue the fulfillment of the prophecy, Liam on the other side is tasked by his elders to stop her at all costs... and blackmailed by the worst of means. While the story setup and the premise of the plot development were interesting, I was a bit taken aback by the turn the series took. Instead of really developing the world further and focusing more on the tasks at hand, I got the feeling we all centered on Liam and Sophia's relationship only - with all the steamy details included. Most of the time I felt like the drama between them was in the forefront, being forbidden to be together and all, the mortal threat over their lives being only a constant presence in the background, although influencing their actions in a substantial way. Also, I think the book was much longer than it needed to be, and I was sometimes really tempted to skip some passages or pages just to move forward to where the plot develops, not only the relationships between the two.. Still, it was a fine reading experience, the book is easy to read, and despite this turn, the series still holds a promise to deliver a story worth the reading time. I am curiously waiting for the next installment.

Okay but really, first of all I would say that if you are able to listen to the first book first, do it. I didn’t and while I wasn’t completely lost, I did miss out on everything that our main characters had to go through in that one, and it did make me feel like I was missing out on some of the background and foundation that laid the plot for this one. I was still able to keep up and it didn’t mess up much for me, but I will say that.
Second of all, this book says it’s a YA fantasy, but dang did it get pretty steamy in a janitor’s closet. And I’m not even joking about that. It just so happened to be Valentine’s day in Orenda Academy, and Liam got Sophia some flowers. She gave him a hand job. Yes, I’m serious. She’s a virgin and wanted to do something nice for him without going all the way. Nothing wrong with that, she apparently did a great job.
BUT Darn it Liam why couldn’t you have aimed for a better spot to “finish” than her shirt?! Darn you.
So yeah, Orenda Academy feels like more of a college scene than a high school, and nothing’s wrong with that. I just wound’t label it a a YA novel. Maybe more a NA (new adult) novel? That may work out better with the content and the sexy scenes. If that’s not your bag, you can skip them. But they do get pretty juicy.
The premise of this novel was very interesting, and I haven’t seen one like it. The tribes that the students are a part of seem to have some inspiration from Native American tribes, although I could be wrong. Koigni possess power over fire, Liam’s tribe (which I’m forgetting right now, sorry) is water. It gives me Avatar: The Last Airbender vibes, mixed with His Dark Materials because each student has a familiar with them. Well, except for Liam, and that’s a sad story in itself which wasn’t explained in this one from what I remember because it was probably explained in the first novel.
I can imagine the whole water and fire don’t mix thing, and how Liam and Sophia have to fight through the odds to make their love work, and how Liam’s basically under the orders of having to kill her. I doubt he would actually do it, especially if he does love her. That’s hard, you know? Plus, that’s killing another student. Do they allow that in school?
The narrators did such a great job in this one. I really felt like I could feel their emotions while they were reading the novel, and I am so glad that they had a voice for Sophia, and a voice for Liam. Sometimes when books have multiple POVs, they can sometimes use one narrator, especially if it’s written in third person POV but you can clearly see which character the chapter revolves around. It worked out in this novel’s favor to have two separate narrators, and I fell in love with both of their voices.
Since I enjoyed this one, I would love to go back to the first novel, meet Sophia and Liam for the firs time , and see just how insane the Elemental Cup was. Because that… sounded really insane. And stressful. Thank goodness Sophia survived it.
I have mixed feelings over the story so far. I like some of it. The part with the animals is cool. The characters can be incredibly immature though. Sophia can be a little too pushy about some things, and Liam, just weird sometimes. Sometimes the relationship seems forced, and awkward. I never enjoy reading explicit sex of any kind. You still see some even skimming pages to find out when it’s over. The story can work without that. I am interested enough to find out how things are going to go, so will be reading more. There are some errors, some consistent ones. And the word coy gets used too abundantly.
I absolutely loved this book. From the drama to action to the romance side. Sophia and Liam are like yin and yang and it was so much fun getting to see them grow together while facing battles internally with right and wrong. This book is definitely more suited for a mature audience, I think that high schooler or a very mature junior high schooler could read this. For a classroom use, since this is the second book in a series it would be a great book to use for an independent reading project that had smaller assignments to go with it.
If you could control one of the elements, which one would you want? There is fire, water, nature, air and spirit, but which one would be the strongest or weakest? Which one would be harder or easier to control? In this story, Linki and Rades have already established this whole new world of magical creatures from the first installment, but this one dives a little deeper into what happens when those elements mix. Both authors have come together to provide a sensational second installment that is a direct follow up to The Fire Prophecy, where four unlikely friends have been named champions and survivors of the Elemental Cup.
Sophia and Liam have made it through the Elemental Cup, but it took a toll. Everyone is now suspicious of Sophia being the prophesied one. That makes Liam and Sophia’s relationship so much more dangerous. Everyone knows that Elementi are supposed to stay with their own, but Liam belongs to the Toaqua tribe and Sophia to the Koigni tribe. Consequences for interrelations or marriage between tribes are grave and often end in death of one or both individuals. The Water Elders have promised Liam that they would bring Nashoma back if he agrees to end Sophia’s life and Sophia’s familiar, Esis inconspicuously continues to heal Liam from his terminal illness. Both are hiding something from one another, but how long can they really keep it a secret. The day when Sophia will have to fulfill the prophecy is coming closer, which means that Liam will be forced to make a choice. Can he find evidence that will turn the water elders away from Sophia or will he have to kill her in order to save thousands.
Both Linski and Rades write well together. This collaboration appears effortless and flows quite smoothly. The characters are all developed nicely, but the real creativity and visionaries are the magical creatures that are introduced in the story. They bring life to the pages, especially the main familiars that were introduced in book one. This is a fast-paced story and readers will find themselves absorbing the words rapidly and with fervor. The narration was virtually impeccable also. Araya and Halstead make an impressive team and their vocal relay of the story is engaging. With this being the second installment in the Hidden Legends: Academy of Magical Creatures, readers are recommended to read the first book prior to this one as it is a direct continuation of The Fire Prophecy. If you are a reader of young adult fantasy, you may be interested in reading Liam and Sophia’s story.
An audiobook was purchased by Turning Another Page. We provide a five-star rating to The Water Legacy by Megan Linski and Alicia Rades.
This was the Supernatural Romeo and Juliet I was looking for! I really enjoyed the first book in the series but The Water Legacy upped the ante for me. I was 100% there for all the magic, all the cute random animals (more kitsune please!), the drama and the romance! I ended up listening to all 16 hours of this book in 1 day (keep in min I listened on 2x the speed since the narrators were just about perfect when I sped the book up so it was technically less than 16 hours) because I found myself sucked back into this world so easily. It took no time for me to be fully immersed in all the conflicts (and boy are there many!) and wanting to know more. That being said, I am going to need the 4 other books in the series to be put on audio asap so I can binge the series to my hearts contentment.
Let me just take a minute to reflect on how steamy this story was- as well as how awkward! The characters are away at college in a committed relationship and decide to escalate to a more physical relationship- keep in mind there is no actual sex, but boy did some of the encounters get hot anyway. Also, surprisingly and probably very realistically, the encounters at times were SO INCREDIBLY AWKWARD! There was fumbling, gagging, unwanted messes... The author made it seem so very true to first love that I was so uncomfortable and cringing for the characters while reading the sections as well as impressed by the realism of this very non-real fantastical story.
And yes, I just spent a paragraph talking about sex, but there was so much more to the story than that! There was all kinds of drama- be it family, friends, school, or romance, some new mystical animals showed up that I can't wait to see again, a very detailed prophecy and potential war looming on the horizon and the action that I thought I would not see after the first book. This had everything I want in a story, as well as 2 wonderful narrators- one for each of the main characters, that helped bring everything to life. I am a big time fan of this world, and even though the ending totally broke my heart, I will be continuing on in this series as soon as I can!
I recommend this for anyone who like paranormal romances, forbidden love, urban fantasy and fantastical academy stories. I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Megan Linski. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
Liam is having a hard time dealing with the loss of his familiar he will do anything to get him back but how far would he really go? Liam is ecstatic when the Water council informs him that they can bring his familiar back from the dead but when he learns what he must do in order to get his familiar back is he willing to go that far? The one thing he must do is kill Sophia the girl he is in love with.
Liam was supposed to get close to Sophia and make her trust him so he could kill her but he never expected to fall in love with her or her with him. Now Liam wonders if Sophia is the girl in prophecy. Can he prove she is not? Is Sophia the girl in the prophecy? Who will Liam choose? Sophia or his familiar? Who will he choose his soul or his soulmate?
Liam is not the only one with secrets. Sophia has a few secrets of her own. Liam and Sophia have their own secrets between them and only a few close friends know of their secret. Sophia and Liam must keep their relationship a secret as it is forbidden for houses to mix. If they are caught they will face dire consequences.
The Water Legacy another amazing journey into the world of Academy of Magical Creatures at the Orenda Academy. The Water Legacy was just as magical as its predecessor The Fire Prophecy drawing me into its world filled with magical creatures with so many twist and turns to keep you flipping those pages from beginning to end.
Once you pick up The Water Legacy you are pulled into its magical world and your world no longer exist until something pulls you back out again. All the characters are all so amazing humans and magical creatures alike and most all seem so sweet, cute and cuddly. What does the Academy of Magical Creatures have instore for us in the next book? Well I don’t know but I can’t wait to find out.
I highly recommend The Water Legacy to all fans of magic and magical creatures and who love the academy worlds.
Let's just say...wow. This book took the series from PG to R so fast. And there isn't even a hint in any of the descriptions that there are a large amount of very explicit sex scenes. That being said, I feel like the plot took a back seat to the romance lust fest that was Liam and Sophia's relationship. Both are given important missions from their tribe's elders at the beginning of the book, and both just sort of meander about in their attempts to complete them. Granted, Liam is trying to NOT do what he was asked, but even in that regard, he's pretty wishy-washy. We barely see any of the classes, we barely see any of the magic (with the exception of a couple tutoring sessions with Doya) and the whole book seems more focused on angsty teenage drama and lusting after each other. There is barely any conflict or character growth. Hayley is hardly seen and I feel like there was barely anything to challenge Sophia and Liam except a bunch of "Should I do this or not?" wavering back and forth. The temple scene at the end was the most exciting the book got, but even that barely lived up to the excitement of the Elemental Cup in the first book. And the whole bit with the Long story short, I liked the book all right, but honestly, it could have been about 15 chapters shorter and we still would have gotten the same amount of plot development as we did. Overall a disappointing follow up to what seemed to be an interesting series.
Still enjoying the series. This books plot was wild that Liam was supposed to kill her and he was like considering it. It was also so naive of him to go along with the elders that were holding his familiar hostage like what a horrible thing for a father to do to his son- say that he has the power to bring back the missing piece of his soul but will only do it if he kills someone he’s friends with ?! And then for it to turn out they never had the power to bring back his familiar is horrendous!! What was his dad going to say if Liam had murdered Sophia (who his dad later found out he was dating and seemingly serious about) and then he asks for his familiar back and they can’t do that?? Like that would have destroyed Liam so much. And the fact that the plot to manipulate him had started before the challenge in the last book that they had created a scenario to trick Liam that only Liam would be enticed by because he’s the only person to survive very long without his familiar… Just such messy boots behaviour. Liam should have told his mom and she would have straightened out his dad. Anyways I really enjoyed the old evil water guy yelling TREASON at anyone that disagreed with him, the audiobook narrator had great comedic timing with it. Can’t believe the other water elders didn’t call him out for his deranged behaviour. I have to assume that once we have the whole prophecy it won’t be a bad thing it will be like uniting everyone and getting rid of the divides but how that can occur with such a blunt statement as thousands will die from her (or whatever it was), I just don’t know.
Will continue with this series. Mostly because Liam’s disability is a really dope aspect and is similar to my own so it’s cool to be seen. Also the audiobooks are all included in audible plus so I don’t have to switch to book book format.

After a very "meh" thought to the first book, I didn't really have to high expectations for the second but I thought I'd give it a chance.
The first one, though very average at least focused on the plot of winning/ finishing the tournament and development of character abilities. This book seemed to put the plot to the last handful of chapters and focus on the main characters relationship and how taboo it was and how much they lusted for one another.
I wouldnt say the "spice" was particularly needed in this series. Mostly as like I stated on the previous book, this series sounds like the characters are 15-16 at best, despite the story saying otherwise. So the sex was kinda cringe for me to have to read with that idea in mind. However this does change my first comment on the series being for "young teens" to "new adult" (or at least it's trying desperately to be)
The familiars kept this story fun with their quirky ways, but other than that you could skip most this book to the last few chapters and miss literally nothing except a load of "what should I do?" And mind numbing teen drama.
I avoid rating stories 1 star out of respect for the writer, as effort has obviously gone into writing their work. But this for me would be less than the 2 I am giving.
This series just isn't hitting it with me in either the YA fantasy department or the NA romance.
**Cliffhanger Warning** This book is part of an ongoing series, which means that it continues the story begun in book 1, and doesn’t complete the story at the end of this one. It does complete an arc, and you’re not left hanging as such, but it is an open ending of the ‘to be continued sort’.
This book sees our fabulous four in their second year of study, and with two teachers really taking advantage of Liam and Sophia. While it isn’t a surprise that the Koigni are behaving that way, it does come as somewhat of a surprise to find the Toaqua acting the way they are, and what they ask of Liam is very underhanded. In reality, the book is about trust, and the lack of it. Both Liam and Sophia, while trying to have a relationship, make that fatal mistake of 1) not trusting each other and 2) keeping secrets as a result. It’s the kind of frustrating behaviour that drives a reader mad, but is fairly normal for people that age. The possible consequences of their actions, are also brought home in a rather brutal way for them both, and we see the true segregation between the elemental races in the books.
All in all, it made a great story, with some tense moments, some ‘yelling at the characters’ moments, and a great deal of angst for the main characters.
Recommended for those who enjoy new adult fantasy and academy romance.
I decided to read this book just to see if I deciphered book 1 wrong.
Unfortunately, this one made the same mistakes (for me) as book one did. Liam is fine except when he starts trying to sabotage Sophia's magic. Yes, he has his reasons but it seems to this old lady that he would have been honest with Sophia, and she, with him!
In this book, both elders of the fire tribe and water tribe are worried and enlist both Liam and Sophia in a plot. The water tribe wants Liam to KILL Sophia because she is "The Prophecy" (though that isn't explained in this book.) The fire tribe wants Sophia to use her magic for other members of the tribe to take it over.
I had to skip the sex or almost sex scenes! At my age, I have no interest in teenagers and their "come here, come here, come here, get away. get away. get away" romance. I also didn't like the fact that Sophia often pleasured Liam but there was no him returning the favor! That, to me, was VERY selfish on his part. But then again this is a "kid" who has doubts about killing his "soulmate" but doesn't have the guts to tell his father or the tribe elders that he would NOT do it! Nor did he tell Sophia what his tribe wanted him to do to her!
As good as I thought book 1 was, book two frustrated me and almost made me stop reading it! I may read book 3 but judging by this book, that is iffy!
The Water Legacy continues the magical momentum of the series and might just be my favorite so far. The magic school setting remains one of the strongest elements—it’s a theme I really love, and this book leans into it beautifully. There’s something so comforting yet adventurous about watching characters grow their powers while also dealing with the realities of magical life, and this installment explores both in more depth.
The presence of magical creatures and new powers being discovered adds even more excitement. I love how the world keeps expanding while still feeling grounded in the familiar dynamics of the school. The dual POV remains a strength, letting us stay connected to both leads as they grow individually and together. I continue to really appreciate the representation of a disabled main character, which is handled thoughtfully and never feels like a token detail—it’s integral to who he is, and it makes his journey even more powerful.
There’s also a definite shift in tone here—more emotion, higher stakes, and more complex character arcs. It’s still fun, but you can feel the characters maturing and the plot thickening in ways that really work. The Water Legacy blends the wonder of magic school with meaningful growth and tension, making it a strong and satisfying continuation.
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Megan Linski. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
This audiobook is amazing! Not only is the story, but the narrators have raised the bar. My listening experience with this book went beyond my expectations.
First of all, if you haven't read any books from Megan Linski & Alicia Rades, either indiviually or together, you're missing out! The combination of their writing styles is a whole new level of story telling.
I enjoyed Liam and Sophia so much. And yes, as it says in the description, Liam was supposed to kill her. Talk about star-crossed lovers.
I have not read the previous book in this series, but I am mostly certainly going to now. The dual narration of Graham Halstead for Liam and Jennifer Jill Araya for Sophia was awesome. I tend to lean more toward narrations like this. And let me not forget to mention that this is actually the first audiobook I've listened to with their narrations.
As always with Tantor Audio, the quality was perfection. No mid-cuts. No white noise in the background. A total win-win.
I liked this book because the plot proceeded smoothly and the characters continued to develop and grow. However, I hate the high school style relationship between Liam and Sophia. They are supposed to be in college, but their sexual encounters and relationship conversations are what you would expect for high school not young adults in college, particularly since Liam is 21. I mean in this day and age a college student could be a virgin, but they would most likely be an experienced virgin. What I mean by that is that they are socially aware of sexual situations (from friends or media), such as they may have experimented/talked sexual acts (not intercourse) with others or themselves. Also, I do not believe in college, there is the "do you like me" question. I did not knock any stars, as a result because I felt that it was not fair to deduct stars based on my opinion of the characters sexual and social maturity. Other than these pet peeves I enjoyed this book and look guard to the next.
The Water Legacy (Hidden Legends: Academy of Magical Creatures Book 2) ~~ OMG book 2 turns everything up — the danger, the romance, the heartbreak. This story goes deeper into the elemental magic and the war brewing around them. I loved seeing characters grow stronger and more determined even while everything they care about is crumbling. The betrayal that hits in this book absolutely gutted me. I felt the pain right along with them.
There’s a scene involving water power that genuinely had me holding my breath — it was that intense. Watching friendships shift, loyalties tested, and sacrifices rise made this book unforgettable.
The Audible performance was powerful — emotional, sharp, and gripping. I love how easy it is to jump between formats without losing my place or the energy of the story.
I would definitely recommend this book and series and can’t wait to start on the next book. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll just have to read this series yourself — you won’t regret it.
If this book were just about the prophecy and the bigger picture and the forbidden love, I would enjoy it very much. But it's not. These characters honestly act so immature sometimes, like, please talk to each other, and grow up and maybe think a bit before acting. And also why the suddenly weird conservative discourse about wanting to get married and have children sooner than later, like girlie to each their own, but there's a war brewing, and you are in no way mature enough to raise a child. And generally, why 3 out of the 4 MC are so determined to get married and settled in when they're 18. Honestly, I'm gonna give this series a last chance, I'm listening to it, so it's not a huge deal, and there are two solutions: it gets better, these characters grow up, and in that case I'll probably finish the series or it's the same drama, and in that case it would have been an interesting experience.
Wow! I think I was holding my breath through the last 100 pages of this book. This was an intense continuation of the Academy of Magical Creatures series, and I loved every minute of it! There is a lot that happens in book 2, but my favorite moments were the relationship development and growth between Liam and Sophia. They were truly adorable throughout! And there were some very hot scenes between them as well. We get a bit more information about the prophecy, but with tensions rising between the houses and betrayals around every turn, it is going to take a lot for this team to keep it together. The ending was heartbreaking, but I see there is still hope for redemption. I can't wait to find out what is next for these heroes in book 3!
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Sophie Liam Imogen Jonah ---------------------------------- What happens? The stakes are raised when both Liam and Sophie are set seperate but related tasks from their hosues elder's. Liam is desperately trying to prove that Sophie isn't the chosen one while Liam is desperately trying to fix Liam and prove to her elders she is taking the task set seriously. Final thoughts Interesting 2nd book. This was pretty good and better than the first book. The characters grow but there is still some tedious fighting between Sophie and Liam. Would I read again?: Yes Would I read this author again?: Yes
The characters were amazing. I really enjoyed learning more about each character. Sophia and Liam make quite the magical couple. The connection between them left me craving more. And their journey in this story made them that much more stronger and I fell in love with them even more.
The story-line was magical. This duo of authors really know s how to pack a punch and keep us in suspense and continue to keep us turning each page. This is a fast paced story but it is written really well and I love it when authors go from one characters POV to the other in each character so that way we have know what both characters are going through. I really enjoyed this story and can't wait to read more. I highly recommend it!!
Fantastic Follow-up on Book 1! Book 2 did not disappoint! The storyline was so intriguing and delved more and more into the characters. The manner in which these authors write is simply amazing as the detail given in the book has you seeing it in Technicolour in your mind's eye!
The plot thickens in this book and has you so engrossed that you just have to turn page for page, reading in anticipation as to what will happen next. The friendship between Sophia, Liam, Imogen and Jonah is growing but is put to the test as the Prophecy becomes a "stronger" topic within the school. As the reader, you are JUST NOT SURE who is friend and who is foe?!?!?! The end is a cliff hanger...... so yeah, I'm off to get book 3. Happy Reading
A tremendous, fantasy romance. Sophia, Liam, Imogen, and Jonah are at it again. However, there are more secrets between them. Secrets create guilt. Guilt creates distance. Distance creates rifts. The Fire Elders are putting pressure on Sophia. And the Water Elders on Liam.
This appears to be a significant stepping stone for the series. Definitely not a stand-alone novel. While some cracks in the relationships happen, some bonds become more firm. The ending is not satisfying.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
I received a review copy of this book from a third party. This is my honest review.
