Not really much of a language-learning book (it sometimes feels more like it was written to promote his website), but it was entertaining. The tone is light and humorous, which makes it easy to read, though it doesn’t offer much in terms of actual structured study.
What I personally didn’t enjoy was the way the author talks about “getting a girlfriend in Japan.” There is even a chapter on this. 🙄 It felt unnecessary and a bit off-putting, and it distracted from the more motivating aspects of the book. I didn’t see many other reviews mention this, but the way he promotes the idea of getting a girlfriend in Japan felt problematic to me. It borders on fetishizing—treating relationships with Japanese women as something exotic or aspirational in a way that felt more about the author’s desires than about mutual respect or cultural understanding.
Overall, I’d only recommend this as light supplemental reading if you want something fun alongside real study resources. Go in expecting entertainment rather than a serious learning tool.
I didn't know what to expect of this book. It's written like a memoir. It has some interesting stories in it but I don't really think it teaches Japanese. It's just introducing kana and words they're used in. I didn't find any of it helpful. I would not recommend this book for learning kana.
Great concept for a book, low-effort language learning can still be beneficial, but it never really felt like studying. Wish there were more like this for other languages.
