Dnf 40% in. Maybe one day I'll come back and read this, but the MC was really not to my liking at all. He was this really annoying dichotomy of simp+know-it-all and the quirky, bumbling attitude felt more annoying than endearing. Also there really was jack shit for world building or any explanation of how or why magic worked, it felt like we came into the story part of the way through. Virgil knightly has gotten really popular lately, but for the most part I really have a hard time with any of the MCs he writes, I either love them or more commonly detest them, no middle ground unfortunately.

not good

I am shocked at a lot of the writing that is coming out these days. This book is not written well at all. The mc guy is a putz and emotionally damaged, like a simp. He gets abused by a woman and immediately thinks it’s his fault. Like he deserved it and he needs to do better. What a loser. This harpy is insufferable and off putting to the max. She had no redeeming qualities, and the mc simp does whatever she says, takes whatever she dishes out and loves her for it. I’m actually concerned for the author, this is not a healthy relationship, it isn’t ok. Reverse the roles and look at it again. If it was the man treating the woman like that you would have some problems, wouldn’t you? Skip this junk. Read a better book. Also, the world building sucks. No idea about the magic system. At all. Don’t even know what a summoner is! This is why I skip authors, not just individual books. This won’t get better. I warned you.

There's a lot of magic, politics, and lore information thrown at you throughout this book (and its sequel) in ways that don't quite feel satisfying and a little hard to keep track of and remember. Some of that makes those things feel written to fit the plot, rather than existing as a truly lived-in universe where the story happens inside of.

Still, it's an enjoyable read, but the story and character motivations are a slow burn where you need to get pretty far into the book for things to make sense. Plus the story does end pretty abruptly with a lot of plot threads left until the sequel to actually get resolved. It really feels like just 1 large story split half way through to create 2 books.

Considering the kind of story this was, I felt that the intimate scenes were kinda dispassionate and often skipped over despite lots of suggestive stuff throughout the story. The relationships also needed more chemistry and better balancing of power dynamics (the non-magical kinds) and treatment of the feminine characters overall.

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Succubus Summoner” is a very enjoyable book with terrific narration. The VA’s have worked well together on another fantasy trilogy, and their voices are just right for this fantasy book/series too. One thing that was different for the narration is that Faye voiced the third-person omniscient narrator role (Tom served as narrator for the other trilogy). I really liked Faye’s voice, and was glad to listen to her as narrator as well performing the voices for the female roles.

As the Publisher’s Summary says, MCs Samuel and Aurora have a personal history that would likely make a two-week journey together unpleasant for both of them. Interestingly, the author responded to criticism on Reddit of Samuel as indicating he wrote the character as an arc, progressing from being an asshole to being a better person. Personally, I never found Samuel to be an ass. Though he was a Duke’s son, he was kind to his valet, and upon being paired with Aurora for the trip he immediately went out of his way to be pleasant to her. If anything, it was Aurora who progressed from unprovoked bitchiness to being a pleasant person. Her arc was explained during the story, so I won’t add any spoilers here.

Samuel’s magical ability to summon creatures that turn out to all be horny succubi was handled very well. While there are several enjoyable scenes of his, errr…fulfilling his responsibility to feed the succubi, the authors gave each of the succubi distinct personalities, and Samuel was initially hesitant to enjoy time with them. The succubi had roles beyond being his personal sex toys. He even constantly told Aurora “I’m not a pervert”! I particularly liked Aurora’s growing acceptance of the succubi, compared to her reaction upon finding Samuel with a pretty redheaded tavern girl.

On the way to the city of Eldruna, Samuel and Aurora banter and get to know each other better (but not THAT much better!), and find themselves battling monsters that are oddly far removed from their natural habitats. They also encounter old friends now in the military, on their way for maneuvers that sound suspiciously like war is brewing.

No spoilers, but upon meeting the Runescribe Ilmora, Samuel and Aurora learns much about why he can summon succubi, with the promise of learning much much more. Aurora is abruptly separated from Samuel and summoned to the convent to meet with the Bishop.

Ahhh….and now the story shifts from a gentle slice-of-life story to a true fantasy adventure, replete with conflicts and corruption involving politics, religion and magical beings. I was surprised to read on Reddit that several folks strongly disliked this turn of events; I loved it! The machinations, the battles and the unexpected new roles for Samuel and Aurora were well portrayed, and I’m very excited for book 2 in this series!

The combination of Virgil Knightley and Annabelle Hawthorne is becoming one of my favorite collaboration of all time, both their series so far have been wonderful.

Good overall story with good pacing that sets up the world and characters. The main character while a bit annoying at first with all his hesitation really starts coming in on his own as the series progresses and he starts to embrace his legacy and what he is. This is basically a story of a summoner world where our characters powers take on a bit of a weird turn; basically no matter what type of creature he tries to summon it will turn out to be a variation of a succubus. The summons/girls are all great and fun to be around, what's not to love from succubi that take on traits from the various animals he tried to initially summon. Ilmora on the other hand is a bit of a bitch at the start of the story but she starts growing on you as she progresses as a characters as the story advances. Naturally things are not as simple as they seam and we start uncovering more plots, secrets, and intrigues as we slowly uncover the true history. But that's enough of the story, wouldn't want to spoil it.

What the series could use a bit more is a bit more "feeding" action, don't neglect your succubi, that's abuse, lol. The ending could also have been made a tad longer so we could get a closure, or better said completion, on the relationship between Ilmora and Samuel which has been left for book 2 from what I can see. Other than this can't complain much about anything.

The narration is also spectacular, I highly recommend the audiobook version for this book. The main character is voiced with passion, a thing I'm starting to see being done better and better in the genre compared to the past. The women are absolutely lovely and each feel very distinct. And the best part - the voice of narration is done by the female voice, a thing I'm starting to like more and more, and hope that more casts pick up on. It's so much pleasurable to have it done like this in this genre.

Overall it has been a great read, and I'm anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.

At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.

Genre: Fantasy, romantic harem, Succubus summoning MC.

Power dynamics in harem: All the girls trust and lust for MC, but act according to own needs and wants at times
Explicit/adult material: Explicit and good. Bunny succubus, Hellhound succubus, spider succubi.

Summary:
Samuel has finally reached the end of his summoner education and plans to summon a bunny for his exam. Exams are high stakes, and any summoning will do. Things does however not go to plan.
Instead of a bunny a bunny-succubus materialises and things get awkward fast. Soon he is sent off on a journey under the protection of his childhood bully to figure out why Samuel only seems to summon Succubi.

Narrators
Voice diversity: Fantastic voicework. The voices are distinct, match the character and are super engaging.
Pacing and intonation: The lulls are cozy, the passion is passionate and the action had me at the edge of my seat. Expert storytellers at wok.
Sex scenes: Very well done.
Overall: 5 / 5 stars.

The book’s strengths.
- The relationships feel natural and grow and change at natural paces
- All the main characters are likeable and feel rounded and real.
- The banter is awesome.
- The writing is top notch, funny and engaging.
- The narration.

The book’s weaknesses.
- None that I can think of. Maybe I would like it to be a bit longer?

Overall: 5/5 stars

For good or ill, this is a very "Virgil Knightley" book.

Which is to say, the core of this book is focused on interactions between the male protagonist and a tsundere female love interest. Expect a lot of awkard stammering, miscommunications, failed attempts at flirting, and not a ton of attention to the setting, plot, other characters, combat, etc.

I would say it's a good example of what it is, it's absolutely competently executred, and it's probably something fans of Knightley's other solo work will enjoy. On the other hand, if you're contemplating reading this because you're a fan of Hawthorne's other work, or of Master Class, or because you just like the concept of summoners and/or succubuses as story elements and want to see them explored, you will likely be dissapointed.

This book is really just an excuse to have a lot of blushing and insincere denials that the two main characters, like, like each other or something. Which is a perfectly fine reason for a book to exist, I suppose (even if not entirely my cup of tea).

This review is about Succubus Summoner 1-3, which I listened to back to back. This series has a humorous premise (young wizard is specialized in summoning but then finds out he can only summon seductive and willing succubi) and has a mostly light tone, but behind this levity and harem lit front hides a pretty serious series of fantasy stories, set in a more high-tech setting than usual (motorcars, rifles and cannons, but nothing more advanced than that), where our protagonists combat religious oppression, uncover a dark plot, and fight many magical duels, in between 'topping up their magical energy'. I don't give it full marks because the plot weaving was a bit rough around the edges, and a bit basic compared to other works from the same authors, or from the likes of Bruce Sentar. Also, it seemed to me like the hero team is quite overpowered compared to their enemies, and fights are only kept exciting due to very arbitrary limits on how many of the heroes and their summons band together. Still, quite readable and fairly entertaining. I particularly liked the creative use of magic in the duels.

Great read and a fun story!

The characters are distinct and believable, the seeing functions with its own magical rules which it does a good job of adhering to, which is a nice change, and I appreciate the effort of a thought out system.

The succubus could have a bit more dialogue and interactions, but they're a fun addition for obvious reasons. I also appreciate the amount of things happening behind the scenes, where the world feels more alive with gears turning whether the characters are the focus or not. There's also a bit of mystery and things that aren't fully explained, which is nice, compared to just having a technical manual where everything is spelled out.

Really looking forward to this series continuing!

Whatever these two authors are doing to work together, they should keep at it. This was an excellent book, as have been the last several that they have done together.

I have been juggling books of late, as few of them hold my attention very well; this one did. Characters, writing, all of it is well done, arguably better than the authors do individually. I even found the sex well modulated to the story, something many books of this type have trouble with. The fact that I read them, as opposed to skipping them for being over-long is my measure of that.

Anyway, if the blurb appeals, you should read this.

Generous 4, probably a three for most, the plot is what really drags this down, most of the plot takes place during a trip which is just a lot of whinging from both characters. Normally I like it when the there is something that the characters need to work through and not just the author throwing two random characters together. Just didn't like this execution that much, the ending especially was the kind of 'reset' trope I'm not a fan of. The drama is also a love it or hate it with it screwing the MC over a lot. Had to read this twice, ended up dropping this a year ago at about 40% because of the plot loosing my interest, and had to reread it from scratch.

Engaging characters doing interesting things

This is the first fantasy novel I’ve read that combines magic and WW I technology . The story leans heavily into stereotypes, but consistently kept me guessing as to where the plot would take me. Definitely an H-story with the amount of gratuitous intromission described, but the idea of an afterlife that is anything but binary —that succubi are not definitively good or evil is a plot with legs. I was eager for the next installment.

This was a whole lot of fun. Absolutely great worldbuilding (which I expect from Annabelle Hawthorne).

Samuel is a new Summoner (basically, magic user). He summons the entity that will be his familiar during his final exam. Instead of the magical bunny he planned for, he wound up summoning a bunny girl succubus. Which surprised everyone.

And it turns out he can only summon succubae. Which makes for challenges.

Great story. Good sex scenes. Good tension between the characters. Very good fighting and tension scenes and the plot is evolving very nicely.

Highly recommended.

Virgil and Annabelle make a greatest team

This story is a bit more playful than Master Class and focuses on a slowly building a romance between two ambivalent characters. Not exactly a harem books even though an odd succubus or two is in the mix. Only gets four stars because Master Class is so darned good. Please read if you like Virgil and Annabelle collaborations. Read all their other stuff too.

Succubus Summoner - Great start to an ongoing series!

This is a great beginning to what could be a great ongoing series. The character development was pretty good, though there was not enough “Feeding” to find out how that changed/developed the Summoner nor the Succubi let me a human female (cute redhead). The love triangle between the nun, the summoner and the succubi so get interesting in the next book - Can’t wait for SS II !

Excellent Start

Wow this is an excellent start to the series! It has it all action, adventure, hot sex, intrigue and corruption! Sam finds himself in a mess after trying to summon a bunny and instead summoning a bunny girl succubus . Now he's on a raid trip with his bully from school who's now a nun. They pair have adventures on the road and at their destination are sucked into the intrigue. What a mess! I am anxious to read book 2!

MC takes his summoner test and summons a succubus. He then travels with a woman who was his bully in his youth to a druid that should help him with his unusual skills.

Very entertaining. the banter between the MC and the FMC is fun. I listened to it as audio book and can really recommend it. the two narrators have awesome voices and do a great variety of accents to bring the different characters to live.

Not what I imagined from the description

---Spoilers---
So I imagined this story to be a "bullied kid in an awkward position trains to be OP" or something like that.. definitely not what went on. Not let down about it, just surprised. I sorta just wish the summons had more meaningful screentime. For the first at least half of the book Snowball is sorta just treated as a far off side piece and I think she was severely underutilized as a character.

I normally criticize books for ending abruptly in the interest of being "Book One of the Whatever Cycle", but this one gets away with it--albeit barely. There are lot of unanswered questions--especially some high stakes ones, but the main characters go on a satisfying journey of their own. It doesn't quite stick the landing, but, importantly, it does so well enough to preserve and respect everything that came before it. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

Absolutely great story

When you take two excellent authors and combine them in one one you get magic.
This was honestly, a really well written story. MC is not OP and is just a summoner with a different type of magic then others.
Very much enjoyed the character building and the relationship between the two main characters. Can’t wait for book 2. Can’t come soon enough.

horrible

I forced myself half way and couldn’t finish it.So much potential pissed away.Aurora treats him like shit his whole childhood and most of the trip. Then she gets a free pass from the author from being a raging cunt bitch and all is good.Fu** that noise.Mc is a walking brainless dildo. I would of let the goblins have aurora and enjoy the whole trip in blissful silence.

Thought this was excellent!

The playful banter between Aurora and Sammy made me laugh out loud a couple of times throughout the book. Kinda had an idea from the start that those two would end up on the run together. Hope that there will be enough positive reviews to convince the authors to write more books.

Very interesting story of 2 adversaries that find a path to become more than friends

The MC and his female nemesis are sent on a mission together and find that the conflicts of their relationship were based on faulty information and incorrect perception. Meanwhile, sinister forces conspire to divide them but may end up causing them to rely even more on each other

Enjoyable read.

I have read all of Annabelle's offerings to date and this was surprisingly witty by comparison. I enjoyed the twist in which Samuel was only able to summon succubi. Later revelation that his mother was a succubus provided explanation for his situation and set the storyline for enjoyable future action. Thank you , Annabelle and Virgil.

Look this is the type of book that I should be embarrassed to have read, but it was way better than it had a right to be. It was sweet for a book that is, in theory, about titillation. If those elements weren't such a large focus for this novel I would recommend it more widely

Pretty good fantasy adventure

(Audible.) This was a cute book. The sexual references were not pervasive and only somewhat explicit, but still "hot." The succubi were not that evil. There was a plot and some character development. I am interested in later reading the next book in the series. Second best quote: "Feed me, master." (For the best quote, you have to read the book, yourself.)

Much better than I assumed

I expected a story about a wayward kid building a harem but what I received was so much better. Nice character building, beautiful story arc although the details of the world could be better but not enough to knock off a star.

Well, as the title suggests, I thought this book was a lot of fun. Though you really need to get the redheads more love.

I really hope there will be a sequel.

badly written, vague, uninteresting

I couldn’t finish the first chapter. The authors seem confused about what they are trying to say and the writing was just so bad and vague and constant telling. Telling, telling, telling, and nothing interesting. Wish I could give zero stars.
