Naru is the brilliant, eccentric, and deeply mysterious leader of Shibuya Psychic Researchers–a band of intrepid ghost hunters. But none of his colleagues know anything about his past. Now the brave paranormal investigators venture to a haunted school–and deep into their leader’s secret history!
Shiho INADA (いなだ 詩穂 in Japanese) was born in Kanagawa Prefecture on October 17. She is a Libran with blood type B. She made her debut with Camouflage in 1994. Her best known work is Ghost Hunt.
We pick up some while after "Cursed House"; some of the characters needed serious hospital time after that ending. This series is getting darker as it goes.
Our heroes get lost on the drive home (too much bickering between backseat-driver Ayako and the Monk!) and end up at an innocuous lake which has a startling effect on Naru. He tells the other to go, but of course they want to find out what's going on with their mysterious boss.
The anime was love obviously, which is why I ended up here. It's kinda hard reviewing mangas every volume. Like reviewing a book at every chapter end...
Usually I love Ghost Hunt and while I liked this one there was something very off balanced about this one. For one, it took over a year to come out and in that time the stores stopped carrying the line (aggravating how they’re handling sales any more) in the store so I hadn’t even realized it came out.
The crew had gone to pick up Naru from the hospital where he’d been for weeks after their last adventure nearly killed him. On the way home (in two cars), Monk gets distracted and goes down a wrong road. Lin ends up following him. Oddly, it leads to a place that has a strange affect on Naru. He wants to stay at this rundown lakeside resort, saying he had been looking for this place.
Not only has he been looking for this place, it’s the reason he developed SPR in the first place. He tells Mai to look for work when they get home because he’s closing up shop. Needless to say everyone is stunned. They’ve become a little family and no one is ready to let go of that. Finally, they get it out of Naru that he’s here to find his brother and to that end, Lin arranges to have the lake dragged.
Now this is where it bogs down. We have Naru keeping secrets with the men in the group, which is was a little annoying but could be leading somewhere. While the weather prevents the search for a body, the mayor tells the team about a school that was abandoned due to low enrollment. They would like to tear it down and build a lakeside resort but fears it’s haunted. Would the team take a look?
Naturally they say yes and we’re still good up until this point but then for a good chunk of the middle of this volume we have the team explaining the types of ghosts and Western vs Eastern spirits and how they differ. We’re 10 volumes into this series. It seemed a little late for this and it was such a huge expository hunk. Also Naru disparages their own abilities, saying they’ve really never accomplished much in the banishing since they have no real proof ghosts ever existed, hitting particularly hard both Monk-san and John. He did have one good point, something I’ve said from the beginning. John is too young to be an exorcist. At his age he wouldn’t even be out of seminary yet. And to do exorcisms without the permission of the Catholic Church is a no-no. Still, not much comes of this other than the feeling that they just slammed their own series. Also Monk can no longer see spirits (and that felt like a very contrived plot device).
Half the group ends up at the school to investigate while the other half go into town to scout rumors about the school. Here the story picks back up again. The school is a trap and some of them go missing. It took a year to get this. I hope it’s not another year to get to the next one.

This storyline was not in the anime so it was exciting to read something I had no previous experience with! It was a classic horror story... creepy place, they get stuck in it, and people start to disappear! I wonder what will happen next! The only thing is I'm worried this story line will be dragged out in more than just two volumes, and volume 12 of Ghost Hunt is not available in the US...and I'd really like to see how this story arc ends! So I hope it'll end in volume 11! Here's hoping!!
P.S. Yasuhara and John are definitely my favorite characters! In case you wanted to know ;-)
I like that the foreshadowing from previous volumes is now coming to light. Like Naru's trips. The mystery of his brother is finally unveiling and I'm excited to see how it unfolds. The case is alright, one or two panels were pretty eery, and Mai needs to come to terms with Naru's infallible exterior. Although when his brother's body is eventually exhumed, it would be amazing to see his facade fall.
Probably one of my favorite volumes with how it started off with a huge revelation about Naru. Enjoyed the bittersweet feeling mixed in the story since this case (which was eerie and mysterious, as well as sad given how it involves children) marks their final investigation together.
Shibuya (Nara) is discharged from the hospital. Thanks to being lost in the woods they find a place that Naru seems to know. Naru says he plans to close their investigative office. Later some divers come to the place where there's a lake nearby.'
Naru is looking for the corpse of his brother. While they are at the cabin some old people arrive and ask their help about a haunted and closed old elementary school. As some of the group talk more is revealed about the various members. Some of the group become trapped in the school.
Research by a couple of the members shows that there was a natural disaster on a particular day that the students were on a field trip and that they all died.
I am still completely invested in seeing what happens to these characters. I do feel like too much time is spent explaining the otherworldly beings the team fights. Sometimes the theories go on for pages and pages and pages and my mind starts to wander as I skim. BUT the artwork, specifically during the creepy ghost hunting scenes, is very atmospheric. It freaks me out more than any scary movie. It's awesome!
Ahhhh. I was told I have to wait a whole year to read the rest of this story. So far this one is very creepy. You find out more about Naru's family in this episode of Ghost Hunt. I can't wait to read the rest of the story.
I love this series. I was so happy when volume 10 came out. In this books we learn more of Naru's past. Also they are in an area where they are investigating a school and some of the members disappear. Of course this ends on and cliffhanger so I can not wait until the next book comes out.
While I did enjoy it I am more curious about what will happen next. This series does seem to be one of the few that I enjoy the anime more than the manga.
