Only His

Susan Mallery

ONLY HIS is the sixth book in the Fools Gold series and I can't believe I waited so long to read this collection of funny and romantic stories. There are forty three books in this series and I'm hoping to get a huge batch of them read this year. ONLY HIS is also the third book in the Fools Gold Romance trilogy that covers the love story of the three Hendrix sisters who also happen to be triplets. ONLY HIS is Nevada's story.

Nevada is oh so lovable that you can't help but cheer her on as she tries to figure out her place in Fools Gold. She has finally found a job she loves and her life seems to be going right for once. That is until she finds out that her new boss is her first love, Tucker Janack. Tucker has many many issues, but he agrees to go along with Nevada's rule upon taking the job, of business only. Tucker has his own scars and at first Nevada wonders what happened to him but wouldn't dream of asking him. ONLY HIS deals with so many different emotions that one minute I was giggling and the next tearing up. Trust me, when you learn the truth of his and his ex girlfriends relationship, it will blow your mind and break your heart.

ONLY HIS will surely pull at your heart strings and make it very hard for you to put down. If you are like me, you won't be able to stop until you know what happens to all of these beautiful people in Fools Gold.

Make yourself a yummy hot drink, get your favorite blanket and get on the couch. ONLY HIS is an awesome way to spend the afternoon or evening. I'm so excited to continue with the Fools Gold series and learn more about my new found friends. Once you start ONLY HIS you won't be able to put it down and will find yourself cheering for Tucker and Nevada as they try to navigate their way through a very different and unique situation. Susan Mallery will pull you in from the very first page and never let you go!

The last of "The Only's" and I found that I enjoyed them much more than "The Perfect's". The characters were so much warmer and more interesting. Everyone from the previous books did appear so you got to catch up on all the characters of Fool's Gold, it was a great reminder on who was with who and how many kids they currently have- I love that. Most of the time with this many books I forget. Also in Only His you had 2 additional love stories, although not very deep in detail, they were characters I got to know over previous books. Jo's hidden past is revealed and Denise, the triplets mom, exposes the truth about her tattoo's origin. These were a great addition to this book.

There were some very funny moments and realistic creep outs, I mean if I walked in with my mom naked on the kitchen table I would be scarred- the banter afterwards was hysterical. It is fun also to see gossip travel through this town of women... definitely faster then wildfire- nothing is sacred. Tucker and Nevada, the H&h, had a sweet connection and were good characters, but nothing earth shattering. I almost think all the other happenings and relationships in the town were just as strong.

This story was barely adequate, and the side-characters didn't help, either. I think I'll keep this one short because the series really needs to be read in order (to this point, anyway), and you know about what to expect by now, probably.

My problem with this book is Tucker. He's an idiot and kind of a jerk and I couldn't care less if Nevada ended up with him. He certainly didn't deserve her and the whole book I wondered what she saw in him. It felt more like a crush than an actual relationship. It didn't help that he'd been so stupid in the past, of course.

I was a little surprised I ended up liking Cat; she's such an arrogant, self-centered person. I suppose it helped that I associated her immediately with Catherine Zeta-Jones in High Fidelity, so I could picture the charisma and understand the draw. It helped, of course, that she wasn't mean as you'd have expected given her actions in the past.

As before, I liked the side characters, but it made a big difference that I wasn't as interested in the primary couple. It meant that their emotional by-play swamped the main storyline and since it was more interesting, the entire book suffered as a result. Or, maybe it was just that it didn't help my interest in the book?

Anyway, it was a wobbly two and a half star read with just enough engagement to round to three.

A note about Steamy: There are two explicit scenes in the present and an awkward (and short) one in a flashback. So middle of my tolerance and about standard for Mallery. Also nothing special and the bit in the tub only works if you forget they're in a tub that has immovable sides...

Only His

Seeking new professional challenges, Nevada Hendrix applies for a position as site manager on the new construction project in Fool's Gold, only to learn that the boss is none other than Tucker Janack, the man who broke her heart ten years before. After agreeing to a strictly business relationship, Tucker and Nevada soon realize their folly, but can they overcome the problems of the past and have a future together?

Each of the three romances depicted in this novel has its merits and its drawbacks.

Nevada and Tucker's story is the most prominent and they have great banter and chemistry. The fact that they actually have adult conversations rather than behaving like angsty teens is a big bonus. Unfortunately, the inclusion of Caterina into the equation adds an unnecessary air of ridiculousness to the plot. Nevada's patience and weird affection for her are incomprehensible given the events of the past.

The two rekindled love affair between Denise Hendrix and Max Thurman is charming; however, its development was lacking, especially considering the hints of a conflict in the previous book. This never materializes and Denise's minor comes across as silly and childish.

Finally, the romance between Jo Treliss and Tucker's best friend, Will Falk is wonderful until he behaves like a complete jackass. He apologizes and gives a lame excuse for his behavior, so everything in unrealistically hunky-dory. Not convincing at all.

Despite these issues, the book is entertaining and I look forward to continuing with the next mini-trilogy in the series.

The last of the Hendrix triplet's gets their happy ending in Only His. This book follows Nevada Hendrix as she goes after a job that she wants, working for a guy that broke her heart. When Nevada was eighteen years old and away at college, her older brother Ethan gave her the name and number of a childhood friend who would show her around and help her if she ever needed it. Nevada wasn't really planning on using the number but when Ethans asks, she caves and gives him a call. She wasn't expecting Tucker to remember her or even be excited to see her but when she's proven wrong on that front, Nevada agrees to meet him and from then on out, she was never the same.

Nevada fell hard for Tucker but he had a girlfriend. He had a girlfriend named Cat who was everything Nevada wasn't and he was obsessed with her. He had no eyes for Nevada and even though hanging out with him hurt like hell, she couldn't stop herself from seeing him. When Cat and Tucker break up, Nevada goes to him and Tucker dicks her over and that was the last she saw of him until ten years later when he comes storming back into Fool's Gold, heading up a job that has Nevada salivating at the mouth for.

The romance between Tucker and Nevada was my absolute favorite part of this book. It was so easy to fall into their story and to be anxious for more from these two. Whether we're learning about their past or watching them in the present, I enjoyed that part of the book. I loved seeing Tucker going soft on Nevada and seeing Nevada fight her attraction for Tucker. I loved how up front Tucker was about his attraction to Nevada and the way that he went after her was so freaking sexy.

My issues with this book was all of the corniness from the other people in this book. Will and Jo's secondary romance left a lot to be desired from me. I wanted to like it but it was just okay. Will's reaction to Jo's confession had me rolling my eyes down the street. I thought it was so dumb and then every time they talked to each other, I could see the cheese oozing from their mouths. It was like that with everyone in this series and it makes me sad because I think I'm done with this series after this one. I don't think I can take anymore of this happy, happy, joy, joy crap that's going around Fool's Gold.

The whole Cat and the giant vagina thing was another thing that I didn't feel added anything to the story. It could have been left out and I probably would have enjoyed the story more. Cat's part in this book should have been small and making her have lesbian feelings for Nevada did nothing but make me think, "WTF?" over and over again.

My issues weren't with the main romance between Tucker and Nevada. I adored the two of them and watching them grow to love each other. It was all the other stuff going on around that made me want to throw up because there was just too much. All these pregnancies, all of these engagements and then the triple wedding? It was just too freaking much and even though I knew the triple wedding was coming (because how could you not?), I knew that I was done with this series. I know that there are more books in the work because there's Charlie, Annabelle and Heidi wanting their own men and I don't think I can sit through more cheesiness.

I think I enjoy my small town romances in threes. This series hooked me with six but I think I'm done with this series for now. I spent most of this book, rolling my eyes and complaining to Ames and Izzy. I mean, I know that eventually everyone gets married and what not but why can't a happy for now ending be okay from time to time? Especially if the couple isn't even the main couple. I know that we got that with Denise and Max but still, it didn't feel the same.

The romance between Tucker and Nevada was great, it was everything I hoped for Nevada and Tucker was everything I was excited for and I'm glad that I got to know him. He was one of those sexy heroes that I adore and while he made some bonehead moves at the end, I still loved him.

Overall, the romance was great but the rest that came with it- I could have done without so for the romance alone, I'm giving this book the grade that I'm giving it.

Grade: 3 out of 5.

This book was... odd. There were some great plot elements, but they went in really strange directions -- which unfortunately was not a sufficient distraction from the fact that the basic plot is the same one as the other books in this series. And the mix of serious and farcical felt uneasy and unbalanced to me.

The town of Fool’s Gold has never seemed all the plausible to me, but in previous books it was certainly a positive place. Here, I got the sense that the town prides itself on being provincial and conformist. There was a general aura of smug disdain for the arts: one character is established as a serious artist who makes compelling pieces, but she and her art then become figures of fun and are casually dismissed at the end. Since the whole point of small town romance is you’re supposed to feel welcome there, that really didn’t work for me.

I did like a touching romantic subplot involving the town’s mysterious bartender Jo, whose tragic history is finally revealed.

Skimmed the remaining 50 or so pages. I hated this couple so much. They were boring and dull together. Even the sex scenes were a bore. Giving this series one more try and that's it.

This was one of the most ridiculous and poorly developed books I've read in a long, long time. The upside is that it was too ridiculous to make me mad, I guess. But seriously, what the hell did I just read?????

Lotta bad stuff going on here:
-Tucker did basically no work here as a romantic hero and then was forgiven and taken back in the last sentences of the story after a miraculous realization that he actually did love Nevada. After she'd loved him, supposedly for years. An underwhelming A plot romance at best, a deeply unsatisfying one at worst. Also, Nevada, demand a little better for yourself girl. You deserve it.
-A note to authors: final act breakups cannot be papered over in the literal last two pages of the book. It's not possible to rebuild trust in that little amount of page space!
-B plot romance: Look, I'm not gonna get into the legal stuff here because Mallery was clearly not going for legal accuracy (let's just say some dying seal noises were made in the general vicinity of my apartment), but Will's reaction to Jo's attempted bank robber backstory and then his explanation for why he reacted that way were legit comically bad. (For the record, the attempted bank robber backstory was also ridiculous.)
-C plot romance: I think the idea here was that Denise loved both her husband and Max in their own way/time. I don't think that's what Mallery put on page here, though. There was a lot of making light of her marriage? It was very strange. Denise's reaction to Max's proposal may have been the most melodramatic part of the entire story if not for Cat.
-Which, SPEAKING OF CAT. I don't understand why Nevada decided that she'd be friends with Cat, particularly after Cat kept trying to come onto her and kiss her when Nevada clearly said no, she wasn't interested. Also, aside from that, Cat was an unpleasant, manipulative narcissist who wouldn't take no for an answer in ANYTHING. If there was supposed to be a redeeming quality to Cat and not just Cat-as-A-plot-romance-plot-device, I failed to see it. Every time she was on page it was exhausting, and when it wasn't exhausting, it was deeply uncomfortable because...
-This story leaned hard into the slutty bisexual trope with Cat. It was very badly done.
-Also, none of the stories about the indigenous tribe and their artwork that were a part of the book have aged well. Big yikes.

Oh, also, there was an entire subplot about a fifteen foot vagina statue that was being built for display in the center of the town.

Anyway, I'm sure I missed stuff, and sorry to Sam who got the latter half of this book live texted to her as things went more and more off the rails. This was a wild ride, and not in a fun way. It read like it was published far more than 9-10 years ago.

Ugh, what a weak note for the Hendrix triplet stories to end on. A lot of this book is just... a mess, from the relatively one-note characterization of Nevada and Tucker to the explosion of weird gender/sexuality generalizations (women being obsessed with their weight/eating salads, bisexuality not existing, brothers having to "defend" their sister's honor with physical violence...) to the totally pointless Cat subplot. There's some good -- the family moments, as always, Jo and Will's and Denise and Max's story, and honestly, Cat as a main character would have been super interesting! (it's just that as a plot device here, there is LITERALLY NO POINT, she adds nothing to the story and doesn't move the plot along in any way except the very end) -- but on the whole, this might be my least favorite story so far.

I don't even really understand Nevada and Tucker as people-- Nevada is somehow both confident and settled, and still pining for Tucker even though she barely knew him when she ~fell in love with him and he called her by another woman's name during terrible sex?? And Tucker himself is just... kind of a dick overall, and I had very little sympathy for how he handled anything. Their relationship is okay, but so weirdly back and forth (we shouldn't have sex! But we want to, so we're going to! No feelings, but suddenly feelings!), and the resolution is really frustrating. A lot of the book is dedicated to setting up the heroines for the next set of books, which is also really distracting; Cat, while a fun character, adds literally nothing to the plot as is, and talks so much about her "feminine" period that it starts to get incredibly obnoxious. (Also, like, literally no one would notice how many women are working "traditionally male" jobs if y'all didn't bring it up every few pages!! Stop!!).

The main thing that propels this from boring to decent are the side romances-- Jo's backstory is so sad, and Will's relationship with her is great (though I do hate that she's viewed as wrong for not responding when he ~just wants to get to know her or whatever; it doesn't matter how nice he is, she's allowed to not want that!), and Denise and Max's second-time-around love story is delightful-- it's nice to see Denise so happy. And the end was pretty heartwarming, despite my consistent broken-record screaming of DON'T GET MARRIED TO PEOPLE YOU'VE BEEN DATING FOR LESS THAN A YEAR, SWEET JESUS, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE. Sigh sigh.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! I was so happy when this book came out and I was definately not disappointed at all! Most of my questions got answered and there was still one I had left in the end Is there going to be 3 more books for Charlie, Annabelle and Heidi?! I sure as hell hope so.

None of these Fool's Gold books get old and they don't get boring. Each one brings something new to the plate about the woman, man and town. It surprised me at every turn especially since we finally learn Jo's past! I think that was the most surprising part of all and it made me like the bar owner even more! Then there is Denise Hendrix who cracks me up and the way Susan makes the Hendrix family kills me!!!

Nevada is someone awesome. And Tucker is swoonworthy for sure. And together they make this book explode! Every turn they are doubting themselves and wondering what the hell is going on. This I think may have to be my favorite. I loved every turn, every fight everything about it because it was well written and you don't ever know what is going to happen next, one chapter it's Tucker, the next Nevada, the next Jo and finally Denise all changing and it doesn't get slow.

Then add in Cat and you get one crazy ass bunch of people! I don't know what it is that has everyone so bedazzled by Cat but I dont see it and I think it's hilarious that she wants Nevada after all these years and Tucker thinks its also hilarious and Nevada is like ugh No thanks and it just has you laughing so hard and Susan does it in each and eveyrone of her books!!!

This is a series you guys HAVE to pick up but you have to pick it up from the beginning and before you start you have to read The Bakery Sisters series ( Sweet Talk, Sweet Spot, Sweet Trouble)

This book just didn't work for me. The problem with long series like this is they all start to feel the same. Insert character A and plot point C and the book is done. I was skimming towards the end. There wasn't any real development between Nevada and Tucker. A few quick romps seems like all we see for their relationship so the ending feels out of place. There were two side stories within this book for secondary characters that didn't work for me either. Way too rushed and didn't do anything for me.

I'm getting very tired of the same plot in every single book and wish the author would switch it up. Hero freaks out, leaves heroine broken hearted, comes back after having an epiphany, h is floating and ecstatic so all is forgiven and everyone is happy. I get that this is common among a lot of romance stories but it gets old. It makes all guys look like commitment-phobes and all females look like they fall in love at the drop of a hat. If you intend to do a series this long, a lot needs to change between each book. It can't always be that the Hero is supposed to leave in x number of days but miraculously chooses to stay in the end.

Another good installment for the Fool's Gold series. This one was a bit corny at times and I'm not sure what to say about the whole part Cat played in this story, the relationship, and the town. There was a good base for this couple and I was enjoying them work around their past and through it. But there were some situations once Cat returned to the picture that just took away from the story. It was just a little to ridiculous at times. In a world where we have some slightly over involved home town made up of mostly women that probably seems like an unlikely complaint. But I've learned to accept the town and it's oddness and just enjoy the romance in each story. For me the overplaying of Cat into this romance didn't really work.

I also enjoyed the two side romances. They worked out a little more smoothly than our main romance, but still had some ups and downs. It's obvious there will be another in the series although I would like to see this series start winding down myself.

Why read: Love the series.

What impressed me: This series gets better and better with each new book. I loved the entire dynamic Tucker and Nevada had going. Their mutual past gets in the way of the present, interfering with both business and prospective love. They fight so hard against each other and their obvious desires that you just want to smack the two of them, all the while their getting deeper and deeper under your skin. This was another super quick, totally engaging Fool's Gold novel from Mallery and I'm not ashamed to admit I may just be addicted to the entire series.

What disappointed me: Not a thing.

Recommended: Most definitely. Start with book one and just try not to get swept up in the wonderfulness that is Fool's Gold.

Continue series: Absolutely.

Originally posted at Romance Around the Corner

This is the third and last book in this new trilogy set in the fictional town of Fool’s Gold. If you are new to the series you should know that each book features one of the Hendrix’s triplets. Only His is Nevada’s book and her turn to find her happily ever after.

Ten years ago Nevada was away from home about to start college and feeling like a fish out of water. It was the first time in her life that she wasn’t living at home and worse, it was her first attempt at being apart from her sisters. Her brother Ethan tells her to look up his old friend Tucker Janack who lives in town so she can at least have one familiar face while she settles into her new life. The first time she meets with him is love at first sight, but only for her. Tucker is infatuated to the point of obsession with a famous artist and only sees Nevada as the little girl he used to know. When Nevada finds that the artist left Tucker, she goes to console him and what she finds is a very drunk and heartbroken Tucker who ends up taking her virginity. And just when Nevada thinks he finally loves her, Tucker calls the artist’s name in the worst possible moment. Talk about humiliation…

Fast forward to the present and the Janack’s construction company is about to embark in the very ambitious task of creating a casino and hotel complex in Fool’s Gold. Nevada wants to expand her horizons and leaves her work with her brother to apply for a job at the construction site thinking that the person in charge will be Tucker’s father, but she ends up face to face with Tucker. This makes for a very awkward job interview and even though Tucker wants to work with Nevada and is somewhat sorry for what happened (he doesn’t quite remember all the facts) she is reticent about it. She ends up agreeing but will she be able to let go of the past in order to establish a good working relationship? And what about the current attraction they are both feeling? Evidently the road to the happy ending is a rocky one.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I love the premise and I like stories where the main characters share a past because that way when they fall in love it’s easier for me to believe that they can have such deep feelings in such a short period of time. In this particular case that shared history was cringeworthy, we get some flashbacks that show us what happened between Nevada and Tucker and all the time I was feeling so sorry for her. She was eighteen and in love with this dreamy guy who is obsessed with someone else, and of course once the guy shows a slight interest in her, even if that interest is a drunken groping, she interprets it like love, and her naïveté was hard for me to read because it was realistic and I could actually relate to her. And then I couldn’t even be mad at Tucker because he was young and naïve as well, so in this case everyone suffers and no one is to blame. This whole situation made me feel like I was in a love/hate relationship with the book, because I loved this new take on the jilted lover trope, but I felt uncomfortable while reading it.

My biggest issue with the book was the hero. I couldn’t connect with him and the fact that he was emotionally unavailable and hell-bent on never falling in love again was ridiculous. He was old enough to realize that what happened to him wasn’t love. He was in a sick and unhealthy relationship based on obsession, and he should know that at the time he was young and inexperienced, just like Nevada, and that he was in over his head when he got involved with that person. Overall I just didn’t care for him, is not that I disliked him, is just that I wasn’t emotionally invested in his story, he lacked the charisma and personality that Mallery’s heroes usually have. Maybe I just wanted more groveling on his part even when I understand that he didn’t really have reasons to grovel.

I did love Nevada and I was happy to see her get her happy ending. Of all the three sisters she’s the one I was more interested to see happy, I was sorry for what happened to her and I felt her pain when she had to be an outsider looking into her sister’s happiness and feeling very lonely while doing it. I admired her for toughing it up and showing unconditional support to her sisters even if she was feeling sad and a little jealous. I think Mallery did a great job at creating a flawed heroine who was strong and good. I know I said I didn’t particularly liked the hero but I must admit that Tucker and Nevada made sense as a couple, one of the things I liked about the book (and there were several despite of what may seem) was that their current relationship was as uncomplicated as their past relationship was complicated. The love story has a nice steady flow and is quite drama-free considering their history, even when the evil ex returns, they deal with it quite easily.

I was happy to see that Jo the bartender, a character who’s been present ever since book one in the original trilogy and who had a mysterious past, finally gets her shot at love and we finally get to see her backstory. All the loose ends get tied up, you will see what happens to the triplet’s mom and we also get to meet the heroines for the next books, three very interesting women who couldn’t be more different from one another.

Overall it was an engaging story. Even if I had some problems with it I read it in one night because I couldn’t stop, the ending was corny but I wasn’t surprised by it and you know it’s coming because throughout the book we get clues about it. I would recommend this book only if you are a fan of the series, if this is your first introduction to Susan Mallery, then maybe you should start with a different one. I don’t think this book stands alone quite as well as the previous two, mostly because it’s the final one, and I think all the books in the series should be read in order to get the whole Fool’s Gold experience.

Nevada's romance begins when she has a job interview with the man she fell in love with as an 18-year-old at a time when he was obsessed with another woman. Tucker Janack is the heir to a large construction firm and has grown up at construction projects all over the world.

Nevada and Tucker met when he was sixteen and she was ten when he came to Fool's Gold for a summer cycling camp and then reconnected when she went to college in LA. He broke her heart in LA and she'd be perfectly good never seeing him again but she really wants the job for their newest project in Fool's Gold.

Meanwhile, Nevada's sisters have found their true loves and are planning their weddings and Nevada is in a relationship that Tucker tells her is just short term with no strings attached. Then the woman Tucker was obsessed with comes to Fool's Gold. She is a famous artist of massive talent and massive ego. Tucker quickly learns that whatever they had in LA was gone. The only thing left was the lesson that love was too painful to endure.

A couple of other romances are also side stories in this book. The triplets' mother reconnects with her first love and bartender Jo falls in love with Tucker's righthand man at the construction project. Both of those romances are anything but smooth and easy.

I liked the relationship between Nevada and Tucker and loved the Fool's Gold setting. Cat the egocentric artist added some humor to the story and some romantic tension too.

First impression is too much sex - there's even a sculpture of a vagina! The second thought is the main storyline was too predictable. As soon as the two sisters started to plan a wedding, you knew how it would end up. I did like the relationships with Jo and Will and Denise and Max. It was great to see heavier topics dealt with realistically by those characters.

Loved Nevada & Tucker together. Enjoyed the subplot/minor stories. Didn’t care for Cat’s story line.

This community just gets better with even the romance spreading out into the town with even some of the older females finding romance and love. I'm enjoying this series.
