I love reading novels. I am, unfortunately, at a stage in life where uninterrupted free time is at a premium. However much I might want to settle into a novel and spend hours in its company, other, greater priorities tend to intervene.

One unexpected discovery of the last year has been how well sprawling short-story anthologies (such as this one) fit into that reality. Non-fiction and chaptered biographies should work similarly well. So I've decided to add two books to my immediate "currently reading" stack: this biography, and a collection of sports writing. All three will be read simultaneously, fifteen minutes here, half an hour there. One makes do with the reading time one has.

মুখবন্ধ : The introduction is simple and easy, and narrates Kumarprasad's twin loves: cricket and Hindustani classical music. He explains how this work first began life as a series of essays in a Bengali periodical, and ends with a delightful flourish: a description of true slow bowling by the great J. M. Barrie.

প্রথম পরিচ্ছেদ - বিনু মানকড় : What begins with delightful anecdotes about the great slow-left-arm bowling, nuggety-batting all-rounder (destructive too, whenever the prevailing Truman-terror provoked him sufficiently) and an evocative walkthrough of Mankad's Test at Lord's in 1952, gradually becomes a meditation on the legendary C. K. Nayudu. Even Learie Constantine makes an appearance. What a lovely start!

পঞ্চম পরিচ্ছেদ - লালা অমরনাথ, মানকড় ও শুঁটে ব্যানার্জী : Kumarprasad is peerless. I just read about Amarnath from KN Prabhu. Now read about the same man from Kumarprasad.

অমরনাথের সেরা শট ছিল ড্রাইভ, যেমন বড়ে গুলাম আলি খাঁর গমকতান বা ফৈয়াজ খাঁর হলকতান। অন্যের ড্রাইভ যদি রাইফেলের গুলির মতো যেত, অমরনাথের ড্রাইভে কল্পনায় আমরা কামানের গর্জন শুনতে পেতাম। কাট তিনি সপাটে ডাইনে থেকে বাঁয়ে ব্যাট চালিয়ে করতেন না, পাঠাবলির খাঁড়ার মতো হঠাৎ বলের ওপর ব্যাট পড়ত, বল যেত বাউন্ডারিতে বিদ্যুদ্বেগে। আর ওর সপাটে ড্রাইভ আর পুল যেন মনে হত বোলারকে জো লুই ঘুষি মেরে শুইয়ে দিচ্ছে , সে যে দেখেনি সে কিছুই দেখেনি বেচারি। কারণ খুব কম লোকেরই ব্যাটিং দেখেছি যা দেখলে আমার মতো দেশপ্রেমীরও বিপক্ষ দলের বোলারদের প্রতি অনুকম্পা হয়। শচীন তেন্ডুলকার তাদের মধ্যে একজন। এ ঘরানার আদিগুরু অবশ্য ব্র্যাডম্যান, তাঁকে আমরা আর দেখতে পেলাম কোথায়? তবে এভারটন উইকস ও তেন্ডুলকারকে দেখে দুধের স্বাদ ঘোলে মিটেছে । গ্যারি সোবার্সের কথা যথাস্থানে হবে। তিনি ক্ষণজন্মা পুরুষ এবং তাঁকে কোনও শ্রেণীতেই ফেলা যায় না। তিনি স্বতন্ত্র, অসাধারণ, ইউনিক।

কুমার প্রসাদের লেখা কুদরত রঙ্গিবিরঙ্গীর পরে আমার পড়া দ্বিতীয় বই। বাস্তবে আর একটিই বই আমি ওর পড়েছি, মজলিশ। কুমার প্রসাদের বৈঠকী লেখা তুলনারহিত। যেমন তথ্যের সমাহার তেমনি রসের উপাদান। ইউনিক ব্লেন্ড বুঝি একেই বলে। ক্রিকেট নিয়ে এত ভাল মজলিশি লেখা বাংলায় আর নেই।

The perfect anecdotal blend of them two religions of the old-school Indian gentleman, cricket and Hindustani classical music. To risk somewhat obvious irony, given the contextual space of this review, this is a very good read indeed.
