Almost ghosts, the two of us...

As patients in a mental hospital, Drew's and Artie's meeting is anything but cute. The way that shy Artie approaches Drew over their shared love of art is. The instant connection between the two during the course of their stay in the hospital deepens as they share their fears, interests, and dreams. When Drew's family disowns them and severs all ties, their time in the hospital is cut short, and they're forced to leave Artie behind. Together, the two make a plan for what comes once they're both released. Drew and Artie make it all the way to New York City to chase dreams of school, careers in art, healing, and managing their own mental health issues. With the help of a compassionate psychiatrist, Artie's parents, an art supply store owner, and a cast of characters they meet along the way, Drew and Artie lock eyes firmly with their future. But will that future push the two of them together? And if so, for how long? Are some wishes destined to go ungranted?

Ace Jamerson (They/Them) is an enby, queer author who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They’ve been writing most of their life, from truly cringy teenage poetry and an essay on censorship, to punk songs and various beginnings of novels. They love hockey, hoodies, trying different foods, being near vast bodies of water on super windy days, black cats (and all animals really—except mosquitos, they can go to hell), and autumn weather. They will not usually admit to having a favorite anything because that type of commitment is terrifying. However, in their heart of hearts, all Ace really wants is to have and to be a favorite person.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Artie and Drew find each other in their darkest hours and fight for love, for success, and for belonging. Their voices are unique and wonderful, raw and strong. It was beautiful to witness their healing journeys and blossoming relationship.

A FIRECRACKER WISH is an inspiring story of love, hope, choice, and change. Jamerson does a phenomenal job detailing the constant struggle to function after trauma and the vulnerability that intimacy demands. There is outstanding mental health and queer rep, and I love how therapy holds such a large role.

It was such a joy watching Drew’s and Artie’s progress, their hard-won independence, and their bravery to love. They are two soulmates finding their way out of the dark. May all our firecracker wishes come true.

I was fortunate enough to read an ARC copy of A FIRECRACKER WISH by Ace Jamerson a few months ago. Full of heart, real life, found family, love, and hope, it was a great story to read at the time I read it. Following along in Drew's and Artie's journey to finding their happiness was great. Their story left my heart full as I cheered them on, hoping that the climax would lead to the resolution I was praying for all along. If you're into LGBTQ+ with non-binary/enby rep and New Adult romance, this is the book for you!

Drew and Artie meet when they are both at low points in their lives. Their battles may be different but they certainly have things in common. One of the major things that draws them together is their art.

There's a lot to unpack in this novel because there's a lot going on for both of the main characters. They are both dealing with mental health issues when they meet and they become fast friends. The novel follows their relationship from their first tender and risky conversations through the growth of their feelings and the confusion it brings both of them.

I think my favourite character was Drew. Perhaps because the novel is written from their perspective, I felt as though I had more of a connection to them. The descriptions and thoughts of Drew really made immersed me inside their mind and their challenges. While that was difficult at times, it was rewarding.

I would definitely recommend this book - perhaps - in particular to someone who may want a greater understanding of what it is like to live with mental health conditions.
