Word has reached the mortal realm, sending shockwaves through the supernatural community. The Beast is stirring, and gathering his dark troops towards himself with a single-minded destroy all the magical creatures on Earth. He's awake, and promising bloody, furious vengeance.
Her mom was the witch who sent the Beast to sleep in the first place, and she's in a coma. Somehow Prue needs to decipher her riddle-filled diary to figure out how to put the Beast back to sleep again before he rampages through the realms committing genocide.
As if Prue didn't have enough on her plate.
Her evil sister is threatening legal action for the most mundane of reasons, and a mysterious figure from Max's past shows up with a kid in tow.
Oh, and there's an ifrit on the loose, torching whole city blocks. That one just might be Prue's fault.
Finally, the mighty Prince Salozar Winterborne, Fae Diplomat of DC, seems to have developed an insane schoolboy crush on her. Things are getting awkward .
Broke Bones is book three in Blood and Magic, the fun, fast-paced urban fantasy series.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
This was a fun, fast paced romp. It's not brilliant or genius, it doesn't really bring anything new to the table either and the romance is very cliche with the possessiveness and alpha love interest. But all that being said, for what it is it's another solid entry in a really fun series. It's the book equivalent of Wendy's. It's not gourmet food, but for fast food it's pretty damn good.
Prudence goes through a lot of turmoil in this book as she finds out a huge life changing secret, battles an angry ifrit on a rampage, and deals with her best friend turned murdering psychopath...oh and I forgot to mention her sister is suing her. Prues gotta save the world while dealing with a bitter and contentious court case, when is she finally gonna get a break?
It's a fun book but there's not really anything more to say. If you like urban fantasy this is a series worth checking out. It's not gonna rock your world but it's not meant to.
Prue has had a lot to deal with in her life. Dying, being resurrected but having her body decay till only bones remained, the death of her father, her mother's mental decline, her eldest sister's abuse and a society that fears and despises her. But.......always there is Max, always in her corner ready to support her and give her love. It's not fair that some stupid treaty between Fae, Shifters, Vampires and Witches means they cannot be together. It's also not fair that anytime theres a problem Prue is the first person they all come running to.......thought that has something to do with her being stupid enough to take on the Enforcers job (supernatural law) thinking it may change their opinion of her. Anyway......here Prue's abusive sister Isaobel has decided to sue her for what Prue did in book one, nice ......especially as their mum has just had a stroke..... Oh and the Beast has woken up which means nothing good for anyone..............
I liked the first book and hoped this one would cease the gullible, stupidly trusting moments. Someone smart who was abused and tricked repeatedly by a variety of people does not hand a powerful item (e.g. soul of an ifrit) to an ambitious vampire. Of course she would use the ifrit to kill her rivals! Hello!?! Not telling her friends or anyone how to help and being surprised when the evil sister and others don't play fair. This is too annoying. A hero who is so dumb will not last long. I'm disappointed in her lack of evolution and her portrayal as a gullible, naive twit. A survivor survives by being wary and seeing the betrayals and problems before they can occur. They develop better judgment to avoid pain.
Plus, she'd give up the love of her life for a job when she could fight to keep him by claiming she's friendly or allied with all groups? No way. Its too irritating and maddening to continue. Ill look at the following book and if she still hasn't wised up and stopped the stupidity, I'm done with these books.
I liked the premise as a love a strong woman coming into her power, the twist on being a skeleton with power thats hopefully better explained later, along with the fae blood.
WELL GODDAMN that was an adrenaline fueled installment that had me on the edge of my seat. More twists and turns than a maze and HOLY CROW that cliffhanger, yeah I didn't see that coming at all. I freaking LOVED IT...
The Beast is awake... And it looks like his first stop for vengeance is the mortal realm, where he will stop at nothing to destroy all the magical beings who live there. Prue needs to find a way to stop him and fast, but the only person who managed to subdue him the first time is her mother and she is in a coma. That isn't the only problem on Prue's plate, an ifrit who she set free is causing some destruction of his own. And to make her nightmare complete, Isobel her insufferable sister is determined to make her life hell. Yeah Prue's definitely had better days....
Poor Prue has a lot to deal with in this book and at times she feels like she's being split apart. Finding out that her mother had a stroke and then her god awful sister wants to sue her for defamation is just the start. Yeah I hate Isobel with a fiery passion and want to punch her so bad my fists literally vibrate with the need to do so. She believes the more she tries to help people the more she is hurting them and my heart ached for her at times. Thank the stars for Max.
Max who is having a problem of his own to do with his past, never falters in his love for Prue and continues to be the solid foundation of comfort when she really needs it. You can bet your sweet butt I swooned over that..
I just knew that Salozar had a crush on Prue, let's say I could feel it in my bones haha. I'm still not a hundred percent sure of him but i admire him a wee bit more for him helping her against her sister.
And Cindy the tiny gothflower trying her best to stay sober while dealing with her own childhood trauma, has me rooting for her all the way.
I can't recommend this series high enough and after that bombshell of an ending I'm off to find out what happens next 😁
Well, Prue certainly has an interesting family tree. Her sister is probably a sociopath, definitely an abuser, with goddess only knows how many victims in total, and her (biological) father is . Certain weird events are starting to make a horrifically lot of sense. Ex: Why does her mom's book collection have info about birth rituals? Why did she read the children's stories to Prue, but not the others? Sorry for the redactions, but trust me, you'd rather find out on your own. The plot thickens, the you-know-what gets deeper, and poor Prue is teetering on the edge of a dark abyss. She only trusts a few, but they are here for her, including the new, very um... unique nestmaster of the vampires. Her shifter love keeps her grounded, and her friend Chloe, well, she may need her own spinoff to tell all about the mess she's been in. Even our friendly (NOT) neighborhood Gothflower is a source of comfort. And she's finally hit rock bottom (in the last book), so now there is nowhere to go but up. 9/10 unicorns. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄 Couldn't put it down, the great world-building continues, characters change and develop, and the magic system is complex yet understandable. It's just plain good reading! Excellent to buy or borrow.
This is an entertaining paranormal urban fantasy adventure series. Great cast of characters in an entertaining storyline. Prue who also goes by the nickname bones is basically a living skeleton that has magic they can project a body around her bones. She was a very young girl her mother was giving her bath and she walked away for just a minute and pour Pru accidentally ground. Her mother was a very powerful witch and used blood magic which is very frowned upon to bring her back to life. However her body had already died and as the child was alive her body was dead and run away. She came from which family she was able to protect a body around her eventually and she went on with her life. There’s much more to her sad childhood story but she’ll have to read the first couple of books to hear more about that. This series is spinoff from the vengeance steam series which itself was a spin off from the Imogen Gray immortal series. You can find out more details in those books as well. has become enforcer in Washington DC. Fighting against evil and trying to save the entire city from evil paranormal from all sides. Evil does not always come from a distance sometimes it comes at you close by. Read and see what’s going on this time and see if praying her cohort can succeed in getting past it.
Bones spends the whole book trying to correct her mistakes. The ifrit (demon) goes on a killing spree. Bones goes to the Otherworld court. Isobel tries to sue her for defamation of character. She was able to get 4 witches on the jury, lots of witnesses & the worst part the judge is the brother of the Blythe-Smith judge in the last book. Bones arrested his nephew. Bones doesn't want to bother any friends & drag them into this. She has no witnesses. However, she has a fire department statement about when her sister set her on fire. They have her sisters journal & her sisters show up at the end of the trial to save her. Turns out they were beaten & blackmailed into doing as Isobel said. She even tore off parts of her dead skin and threw it then blamed it on Bones. What a terror. At the end Bones starts hearing voices. Violent thoughts go through her head. When she thinks of her fathers death something her mother wrote clicks into place. The truth is frightening. Max helps distract her from it. What happens when she's left alone with these thoughts though?
I certainly wasn’t expecting that. Unfortunately, you’ll have to read “Broke Bones” to the end because my lips are sealed on the subject. Prue’s psychopathic sister Isobel is taking her to court for defamation – and it looks like the deck is stacked against her. The Beast has awakened and it is up to Prue to ensure that all Earth paranormals are united in upholding the treaty that protect them and other worlds. As always, not everyone believes in peace. The only person who could help is her mother and she’s in a coma after a heart attack. But, just maybe, her extensive paranormal library could help? There’s an Ifrit on the loose - it’s Prue’s fault – and he’s busy burning vampires. Gothflower pixie Cindy is battling her alcohol addiction and it is a rocky road for her. And Denise, the half-Fae who was kidnapped in the first book (‘Bad Bones’), is pregnant. But Fae gestation is little understood and almost always proves fatal without the proper ceremonies. It’s just another typical slice of life in Foggy Bottom, DC :) The author, Lauretta Hignett, has a very fertile imagination and doesn’t hesitate to let it loose. It works for me! 4 Stars.
Wow, just wow. So much happened and so many things to happen!!! Prue deals with a lot in this book and some you expect, and some you don't, but all you feel for her. I felt the pressure as it overtook her. I also screamed at her to stop holding the world on her shoulders. And the support characters, oh some of the moments, just made me laugh even as they cried. This is a bad ass heroine, paranormal, overcome some fucked up family abuse, maybe find love...oh the world...maybe more than one world will end book. It does have some NSFW smut bits, and wow, is it passionate, less smut more passion this time. It has action, gore, and retelling of bullying abuse. It also ends on a cliffhanger, and I need to know what happens next! What happens next!!!! I want the next audiobook to be out!!! Although I don't like the narrators voice for Max, I think he could be less giant troll sounding and more sexy rough alpha shifter 🤷🏿♀️. But she is great with the flow of the book and reads it so vividly.
Well, I was not expecting the shocking development at the end of this part of Prue's saga!!! She was Very, Very Busy in this book dealing with more challenges from different directions than she could possibly deal with. (But she did. Because she had to. And she is very capable. Thank goodness.) Yeow. Talk about a deluge... Thankfully, she got a little time for her relationship to progress with her beloved Max. (Very satisfactorily!!)
This series (as all of LH's series) continues to be on my "most anticipated" release list. I love her writing, the world she has created, the way she has built on the characters from previous series and created new ones from them. Such a great combination of quirky, fun and very serious topics. Such great story arcs!!
I love everything about this series and the wonderful, unique characters she has created!!
You can tell that a story is well written by the emotions it causes you to feel. I really want to love all of Prue’s stories because they’re so well written. But dang, the abuse from her sister is really HARD to take. How can any sister, especially a big sister who’s supposed to take care of her baby sister, how can she break that social contract so hideously?
And that’s how I know this was written so well — it breaks my heart in a thousand pieces to see the pain that Prue has to endure at the hands of someone who should love her. In this third book, their relationship comes to a head as they face each other in a courtroom and a jury has to decide which sister is telling the truth about the past.
How much is too much? Prue is about to find out how much weight her bony shoulders can take before she breaks.
It's getting more and more exciting with each book!
Poor Prue is so overloaded in this book. Not only are there a bunch of things going on, they're all going on RIGHT. NOW. PRUE. YOU. HAVE. TO. COME. NOW!!! She handled it a lot better a lot longer than I would have. So much is revealed in this book - or did that start in #2? I don't know - I'm reading one book after the other and not reviewing right after like I usually do because I need to get to the next one immediately!
In any case... a LOT is revealed as this series continues, flabbergasting not just me but the characters, too! I'm so glad this series is complete because I would NOT want to wait to read the next one! So exciting. Did I say it's exciting? Because it is.
(I feel like this review isn't as much of a review as it is "OMG why are you reading this review instead of the book just go read the book already you know it's going to be SO GOOD" So sorry. {not} )
This series is killing me… in the best way possible.
I love this world and love these books. Much like with her Immortal series, the Blood and Magic series gets better and better each book. This one starts with everyone ganging up on Prue. Her sister the ogre is suing her, the vamps are blaming her for the Ifrit causing havoc and everyone just seems to want something more from her constantly. Everyone but Max who is by her side as usual. During the trial the Fae Diplomat comes to a wild realization and disappears leaving her more alone than ever. Then Prue sees the truth of what he saw and is overwhelmed with a new knowledge which will changer her forever. Get it now. You will not regret it.
Wow, things are heating up. Like literally. An Ifrit is loose. He's after the vamps that imprisoned him, and Prue has to stop him. But how do you stop something that can fry your bones into ash?
On top of it all, her evil sister is suing her. Suing! For what? Defamation. That stunt where Prue finally stood up to her abuser is coming back to bite her, and the only one on her side is the sexy if flaky and undependable Fae Amabassador!
Boy, there is a lot to deal with, and the worst thing is also eating at her. The Beast has awakened. Prue's mother, who is in the hospital with a stroke, was the only one who had defeated him.
The problems are many, the action intense, and unstoppable! The best one in the series yet! I wanted to throw the book when it ended! Because there is a twist. A twisty twisted twist. Write faster, Lauretta!
Oh my goodness! This story took one crazy turn of events. We are dealing with a court trial, an ifrit on the loose, and so many other issues going on in Prue’s life. All throughout it Prue is trying to maintain herself. Then we have our amazing side characters that definitely adds to the story. There is so much action and drama throughout this story. It keeps you glued to it as you have to know what is going to happen next. It is extremely well written and developed. That ending was absolutely amazing and shocking. I absolutely cannot wait to see what is going to happen next.
I feel like this series is finally hitting its stride in moving the story forward, seeing characters and relationships develop. What is now starting to be more frustrating is we seem to be missing now is moving us fluidly forward. We seem to have zero time between each scene, yet all of a sudden we hear Prue has made all these plans. Uh, when did you possibly have time to do that?
I was happy to see Salozar become a warmer character rather than just a smarmy fae. Oddly enough he became a warmer character while learning he just about screws any female he encounters. The author has a real talent for telling a good story, I just need a bit more structure in mowing is around.
Broke Bones (Blood and Magic book 3) by Lauretta Hignett is a 4 ⭐️ read. Prue has had some bad news, her mother has had a stroke so as she goes to visit her she’s served with a lawsuit by her older sister. Prue is trying to fight the lawsuit and also do her job as the Enforcer but there’s so many things going wrong at the same time something has to give. I’m loving this series, the author takes you on an amazing journey with her books, I can’t wait for the next one and the next one. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Foggy Bottom is on fire, with an Ifrit on the loose, and the vamps blaming her for his rampage as he hunts down all the leaders of the vampire nest that enslaved him. Prue must stop him or talk him down. He’s free, why won’t he go home?
Prue’s sociopath sister is out for vengeance and ready to take her to court for having the nerve to stand up to her. Prue's mother is in the hospital with a stroke and everyone ganging up on Prue but Max, who shows her he’ll always be by her side.
So much happened in this book and I was not expecting the twist at the end!
Another amazing book in this series! Prue is up to her eyeballs in problems. The ice it she let loose is setting fires all over the city trying to kill vampires, her best friend is missing and probably a psychopath and her sister definitely is a psychopath - who is suing her on top of it! Prue is definitely more and more vulnerable in this book. She realizes that she has been the cause of things while trying to help. Another book I couldn’t put down!! She’s such a mess, she’s totally relatable! And the end, what a bombshell!!!
Cliffhanger with a surprise ending! Mom has had a stroke and may not wake up. Isabel has called the sisters in but has restricted guests until she gets there. Especially Prue mainly because she wants to serve her with legal papers stating she is suing for five million dollars. Money she knows Prue does not have but her reputation has been damaged. Meanwhile the vampires need Prue to help fight a ifrit who was the gatekeeper at their nightclub but Prue set him free. Now instead of returning home, he was killing his former masters.
Cool surprise wrap up. The only downside was how long Bones ignored considering the obvious alternative...especially with several big clues dropped. Probably going to be ancestoral mind warping. I sort hate when authors make it so severe so early. Because logically it should get worse with proximity...meaning Bones would be total puppet even more than the ifrit.
I have tingles and goosebumps. Like... I dont even know how to review this book.
From page one until the last sentence I couldn't tear my eyes away. Everything that happened to Prue, to everyone was like a tightrope of emotion. Even the ending, I suspected something but not that.
I am glad that Prue and Max finally did the deed tho. The heat between them was hotter than the infrits.
I almost didn't leave a review, because I was in such a rush to read the next book. I feel so bad for the h. Her life is been extremely hard and it doesn't seem it's about to get any easier. I'm glad she always wins, but there is a huge cost every single time. I'm glad she has max. Looking to the next book in series. Series needs to be read in order. Told from h POV. Some language.
This book in the series was such a whirlwind of events. Poor Prue just can’t catch a break. The poor girl gives her everything and most people don’t notice or care or even worse still try to blame her . The girl has TRAUMA for days that cloud all sorts of things in her daily life. She needs mega therapy. But in a way that makes this such a GOOD and heartstring pulling adventure.
I felt sorry for the FMC in this book because her sister was such a jerk to her. she did find out who framed her in high school, then her sister ended up, suing her and taking her to court, and they had a crazy fire demon burning everything down. Unfortunately, the FMC blamed that on herself as well so she figured she had to fix that mistake. I always like the mystery in these books and they always seem to be pretty fast pace. I’ll be reading the next book in this series.
This is definitely a book filled with twists and turns, as well as plenty of family drama. Prue still carries on and she does not stop. She is strong to face so much conflict, but still does what is right. I want more, and I Loved It!!! No Spoilers!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’m really not a fan of cliffhangers. I loved book 1. Enjoyed book 2. But this didn’t sit as easily. The court case seemed very unlikely - her sister was clearly lying and the fact that anyone thought that wouldn’t come out seems a bit incredulous. It also meant there is a lot of trauma in this book - past and present.
I absolutely devoured this book. I think I read it in less then a few hours. I just had to know how Prue was gonna handle all this. A crime boss, an alcoholic assistant, love for a man she can’t date, a past that keeps coming back to haunt her and a sister who hates her beyond words! And then a cliffhanger!!! Omg i dont have time for this review, i need to start the 4th book right no
