New Paranormal Romance from Bestselling MM Authors Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake. A grumpy lion shifter duke with secrets, a sassy human who knows nothing of the shifter world, and a fiery arrangement neither of them expected. Cormac Donegan, Duke of Everard, is all too familiar with the perils of his shifter world, especially as a Dahlia, one of the dragon king’s elite spies. After a mission nearly costs him his life, Cormac is sidelined, healing and grieving his heavy losses. Then a different kind of trouble shows up on his doorstep, a human claiming to be his fiancé. When Jason Reaves is nearly killed in a house fire, it becomes clear that someone is trying to murder him. With his already fragile health deteriorating, Jason’s only hope is to call in the debt a stranger owes his father– a favor that promises safety, protection… and marriage. Jason’s escape leads him and his service dog, Mouse, to an impressive country estate. He’s expecting the older man who’d made the promise, not his ruggedly handsome son–who happens to be a Duke, as in rich and royal. Will this Cinderfella find his happily ever after in the arms of a dashing–if somewhat irritable–duke? Or will Cormac’s secrets prove to be more dangerous than the shifters hunting him?

Plot- and romance-wise this installment was rather underwhelming if I’m being honest. Not as exciting as book one was.

Still, rounding up because Jason was A DELIGHT! And Gary Furlong did a fab job not only bringing him to life but also all the other characters and this whole world.

[Jason hysterically monologuing]
Wow. That was…. Wow.
“Are you done now?” Cormac asked.
“I am.”
“That was very dramatic.”
“I’m practicing for my tragic life as the husband of a spy who refuses to believe his husband knows he’s a spy, so he continues to deny he’s a spy.”
“I almost couldn’t keep track of that.” He really needed this conversation to be over before they reached the estate and had to deal with whatever was waiting for them.
“Is it because you’re not allowed to tell me?” Jason asked, studying him. “Blink once for yes, twice for no.”
“Jason—”

Looking forward to being in Beau’s head in the next one.

After the first book of the series I expected a light, easy-consumable story with some action, a nice grump-sunshine romance and characters more defined by attributes than depth, more on the quirky spectrum and with a tendency for banter or sass. What can I say: the authors didn't disappoint and I got what I expected, mostly.

Of course the starting point with a secret promise for marriage you didn't know about until your life is in danger and by following it, finding yourself suddenly in a secret regency world with shifters is the nonsense only happening in such a story. So I also wasn't much surprised was more of a declaration than it was shown. After all that's also quite common but it was one of the reasons why I enjoyed the support characters more than the main characters. My main issue was with Jason and not because of his overemphasized condition but because of his 180 after his discovery of the shifter society. Suddenly his friendly quirkiness and his tendency for word diarrhea became annoying bordering into mean and while at first he was a perfect match for Cormac regarding their love of country life, at the end he just walked over Cormac and it had to be parties and a full social calendar.

It was a fun read but I suppose when the next book is published I'm going to remember as much of this book as I do now of the first one. Might be why I believe this book didn't add much (if at all) to the overall story-arc.

⭐︎ 4.5 Stars Rounded Up! ⭐︎

This was so delightful. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

In this second book in the 'Shifter Scoundrels' Series by Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake, we're focused this time on Cormac, who was engaged to Brandr, the son of the kind and who was Caspian's - from the first book - best friend. Cromac loved Brandr in a platonic way, he wasn't in love with him.

Hasn't stopped him from grieving for the past years, of course, holed up in his country estate - he is a Duke, after all - and avoiding shifter society. He also lost his best friend, Miles, that day, as Miles sacrificed himself to save Cormac in the mines.

And then we have Jason, a human who knows nothing of the shifter world and is just living his day to day 2 years after losing his beloved father in a seeming mugging gone wrong - although it's clear he was murdered, but what is unclear is why.

All Jason really has is his beloved service dog, Mouse, a german shepherd who loves her human very much, and is very loyal to him.

Because Jason has a medical condition where his blood pressure easily fluctuates between low and high, and if it gets bad enough he can faint or even worse.

And one night Mouse wakes him up to someone burning down his house, with him barely escaping through his bedroom window with some essentials and Mouse.

Without a house, though, Jason doesn't have a lot of options, and so he turns to his father, who turns out to have had a deal with a Duke Everard that if the time ever came, he'd marry his son, aka Jason, as he owed Jason's father a debt.

It's the only place he has to go, so Jason goes. And it's not the Duke Jason was expecting who is there, but his son. And after some confusion and some hilarity as well, Cormac decides to honor his father's promise and marry Jason.

So weeks go by, and they start to talk more and more, and get to know each other.

Jason with his adorable rambling, and blushes and bravery, and Cormac with his surprisingly kind and gentle nature underneath the scowls he portrays to the world.

But also, the threat against Jason isn't over. The shifters are still after him. And when circumstances reveal that shifters are real to Jason, things change - ultimately for the better - for good. But also, it turns out these men trying to kill Jason also have a connection to whoever it was that killed Brandr.

Because Jason's father, a geologist, had some special mineral that they want, for whatever reason that we have not found out yet.

So Cormac, Jason - Caspian and Saphir as well - and their trusted and loyal valets, have to race against the bad guys to get the mineral to the palace and the king, to try to figure why it was so valuable that they killed the prince over it.

I adored Cormac and Jason together, they were so great together from the start. Jason's slightly goofy rambling self just charmed the pants off Cormac, and Cormac's gentlemanly qualities charmed the pants off Jason.

Now, I complain about this a lot, but a part of my reason for .5 off is that there wasn't enough steam! Okay, what is with that? Have a collective of authors just decided to tone down on steam? What the hell?

Again, what we *did* get was hot! But it was only one bathroom scene and bed scene, one right after the other. Then nothing! Nothing before or after. Just mentions of hot sexy times.

I was disappointed with that. Now, the romance was of course absolutely lovely and I adored it. But they skimped out on wonderful sexy times. And I'm not asking for a ton. Just more than a couple. Maybe a handful? A few hot sex scenes good have been squeezed in here, is all I'm saying.

Also, Jason chooses to stay human at the end. My only question - don't shifters live a lot longer? Like hundreds of years longer? So him staying human...does that mean Jason would die before Cormac? This wasn't answered, so I was bummed about that. Because I don't want to think of Jason dying long before Cormac does. Don't like it.

Unless I'm wrong and shifters don't live longer than humans? Am I remembering that wrong? Please let me know if I am!

But at the end of the day, those are niggles and so I only gave .5 stars off. The romance, the characters, the plot, were all very well done.

Now I can't wait for Miles' brother, Raiden, and Beau, the flamboyant clothes designer we've seen for two books now. They definitely have a hate/love thing going on so will love to see that dynamic coming in their book! I *hope* for a few more extra steamy scenes in their book ;)

Onto the next!😍🥰😘

My Ratings for the Shifter Scoundrels Series:

✨ Dangerous: 4.5 stars

Not quite as good as book 1, but still a very entertaining shifter romance/mystery.

We already met Cormac and Jason, who made an appearance at the ball at the end of book 1. The entire story is cleverly intertwined with the plot of the previous book, and some scenes are identical, albeit with a different backstory.

Cormac, the Duke of Everard, is the former fiancé of the dragon prince who got killed at the beginning, and that’s how the book begins. One day, after roughly a year, a human with a dog knocks at his door - Jason, who just lost everything in a fire, and who found a letter from his late father, with instruction to contact Duke Everard.

Long story short: the debt Cormac’s father owes Jason’s father includes marrying Jason, and conveniently, Cormac falls in love with Jason (and vice versa)

I really loved Jason, but tbh his inner ramblings - while funny - were a bit much at times. It felt like listening to James Bond/ Indiana Jones with a huge dash of sometimes OTT silly humour. And while funny, I sometimes felt sorry for Cormac a bit at times 😂 nevertheless, I had a great time, again partly because of Gary Furlong’s narration. And I always love it when unsuspecting humans discover that they’re not in Kansas any more 😂

3 stars, and yes, I’ll definitely listen to the next book when it’s released - I’m sure Beau and Raiden will be highly entertaining, too!

This does a poor job in continuing the mystery of the first book.
Look I like an intriguing mystery like your next girly but damn... I wanna see results, this book nearly don't talk about the mystery, we don't really learn much, maybe I will read the next, maybe not.

We will see, hope the next one is more mystery focused, yeah give me the romance but I want to understand what the hell is going on

I fell for Jason and Mouse just as hard as Cormac did

Even though a lot of this book takes place at the same time as book one, you get to see things from a different perspective and discover new information.

Cormac, Duke of Everard, who we last saw turning up to a ball with a human fiancé, his first appearance since almost dying a year previously, is the shifter at the heart of this romance.

Of course, we know from the first book that Cormac is a Dahlia, one of the King's secret spies and that he was injured in an explosion that killed his best friend.

His love is unexpected. Jason's not only human, he has a rare heart condition that affects his blood pressure and he's become accustomed to being on his own when potential dates can't cope with his medical condition or his service dog Mouse.

Their paths cross under unusual circumstances, an arson attack on Jason's home sends him to the Duke's door, not knowing anything about the shifter world.

Watching him navigate through the unknown is super sweet, he has a heart of gold and an innocent that draws people to him, Cormac being no exception.

As they get to know each other, they learn to relax and enjoy the quiet time together until the secrets crash around them as the shifters after Jason catch up with them.

What follows is a madcap adventure through both Society life and the ongoing investigation into the murder of the Dragon Prince.

Ultimately it seems the incidents with Jason may be connected and the plot moves on slightly, all while the two men are falling head over heels in love.

I hadn't realised that we were getting a third book, so there's no further revelations about the mysterious creatures or who was responsible for the attack on the Palace.

I was a little bit disgruntled by that, but not enough to stop me enjoying the story or falling hard for Jason too!

I'm seriously hoping that it's not going to be a year before the next book is out!

#ARC kindly received from the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Maybe I should just quit Charlie Cochet books... they are clearly not for me anymore. Too many I love yous coming out of nowhere, little character developement, characters all sounding like others from her previous books. A shame, really, because I think the stories have great potential, but the execution always seem rushed and with very little effort put into it.
Juts to name an example here, what is Jason's back story? Does he have a job or profession? Is he a student? Does he have friends from the human world? Can he contact nobody else other than "Duke" to get help when his house burns down? I find it so hard to believe that someone with his personality (at least the one he showed at the beginning of the book) would have no friends. Also, what is there to him other than his illness? What will he do after he marries Cormac? Does he have any interests or hobbies to pursue?
Anyways, I won't continue with this series.

Unfortunately, both the romance and the plot were underwhelming. Jason is adorable and sunshiny, Cormac is grumpy. There is no added depth to either MC. Falling in love was too fast and unbelievable. Yet, it was still entertaining and fun read, and I enjoyed it while reading. But nothing here stood out or made a lasting impression

Here I thought the rest of those responsible for the princes impromptu open heart surgery, would be found. Only to have humans brought into this epicenter of chaos. This isn't how one starts change. Unless they wanted humans to totally freak.

Doesn't anyone research their history. Besides! Who asked them to start this mess?

This was a rollercoaster but in a weird way. Some chapters are awfully boring, the action is meeeh, I liked the love story though.
I loved Jason at the beginning but then his personality did a complete 180 and I was confused to say the least
Yeah the main thing that got through my mind while I was reading was : what the hell is going on...
And they definitely fell in love out of the blue. It reminded me of one of my ex who said I love you all the time early in our relationship.
It wasn't all bad though because I didn't dnf'd it and some chapters are quite interesting and captivating. I liked the fact that the main character is disabled we don't have enough of that. I have no idea if his condition was portrayed correctly or not but it was definitely nice and interesting to read about.

The plot didn't retain my interest. I haven't read the first book but it doesn't sound interesting so I probably won't. The next book sounds really great though with an ennemies to lovers but it'll go out in a year so I'll probably forget about it at this point. If I don't I hope the writing will be better at least

Cloned tripe - feels as if authors just recycled their other books into this one

Let me first off start by stating I love Charlie's Third series.

Shifter Scoundrels is the story of POTS and Mouse, well not really.  It is supposed to be about Jason and Cormac.  Jason has a medical condition called POTS and a dog named Mouse.  If you remove them the book would loss about a third of its content.  Book lacks any substance.  There is no depth whatsoever.

Jason is in danger, and he goes to where he hopes to find help.  Enter, Cormac.  They set off on a short adventure and fall in love quickly.

If you have read any other books by these authors, you will notice that characters are cloned after others in different books they wrote.  There are even the 80's references.  I guess something original is too much to ask for.

The book is supposed to be a paranormal romance mystery.  I feel like it is lacking on all of these.  There is just too much focus on Jason's POTS and dog.  It reads bump, bump, bumpbump, then dog on lap.  You will read this over and over again.  With all the focus on Jason's medical condition and the dog everything else is neglected.

I received an ARC to give my honest opinion.

2025 ETA: this is just my perfect comfort read

Yep, listening again for the second time this year. I just love this one so so much.

ETA: And my first comfort re-read in audiobook format of 2024 goes to this book! *happy swoon sigh* Cormac and Jason and Mouse are just the sweetest of all sweetness. I absolutely adore their romance. I can't wait for the third book from these two later this year!

AHHH THESE TWO!

And I mean Jason and Mouse lol. (OK not really...but maybe really? LOL)

This book in audio format is an absolute DELIGHT. Jason is just the sweetest guy and I love his ramblings and his foot in mouth/say what you're thinking reactions to Cormac and his world. There is so much humor in this, so much sweetness, the best dog ever, action, and a great set up for the next book! And so great to see Caspian and Saphir again!

It gives me grumpy/sunshine feels, definitely opposites attract, and such sweetness. Definitely read book 1 first as there is a lot overlap and same timeline when this one starts. I love the combined writing with Charlie and Macy!

This is now one of my favorite audiobooks, like I already want to listen again!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Dangerous is the second book in the Shifter Scoundrels series by authors Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake. The story is closely linked with the first, Notorious, and I think best read in order, as there are some references to past events and people from the first book. In fact, the timelines overlap here for about half the book, giving us a chance to see some key events from other perspectives. Not to mention there is an overarching mystery plot, so definitely start with book one and follow along.

This story is a departure from the first in that Jason is a human with no awareness of the shifter world. As with the first book, this one ends by introducing the next couple and it is very intriguing. We also get a nice conflict in that one of the characters has a connection to the larger mystery, so I think it will be great fodder for furthering that part of the plot. We also get to spend some time here with the MCs from the first book, as well as some of the side characters, and I really enjoy this cast.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

This was another good one in the series.

We get a little more background on Cormac in this one. We see what the true relationship was with Brandr, which was nice. I really liked Jason. He has no filter, and I just loved it. He had no fear of anyone, really. His relationship with Vega and Sillian was great. I loved how he joked with them but he also trusted them.

We see such a different view of some of the characters from the first book. And of course, we see more of Cas and Saphir, which was great. I loved those two from the first book.

I'm super excited to read the next book featuring Beau.

Dangerous was fun! I really loved the dynamic between Jason and Corman and how their relationship developed. There was surprisingly little conflict and angst with them and those are always my favorite type of romance stories. I did wish this book had been longer, though. Some plot points were quite rushed and glossed over and the overall series arc didn't quite progress much or at all.

I am so torn with this book, so I had to leave a long note to myself here in the form of this review. The first chapters (events in the past, night of royal murder) and the last chapters (the intro to society, the chase, etc) are perfect. The prose drew me in, the character emotions were felt, and the chemistry was there.

HOWEVER, the rest is a bit of a mess. It's a disorganized plot that could barely hold my attention with its lack of chemistry and no depth of emotions. Especially for

Compared to book one, this is a structural mess with surface level feels, a lack of chemistry, and underdeveloped main characters. I also don't know what happened with the middle section of this story, but it's not up to the level of polish as book one or--like I said above--the beginning and the ending chapters. I hope book 3 is better crafted or I'll have to drop the series, which I really don't want to do because a) it's an amazing world and it started out so strong, and b) it's Beau and Raiden's enemies-to-lovers story!

I am bit sad to say that the condition of the main character, while unique and intriguing, felt pretty mismanaged since it only cropped up at dangerous situations and half-heartedly at best but it had no bearing on their normal life and, most importantly, their bedroom activities. I was also pretty miffed at the end, where, not to spoiler, the fainting human was offered something... which he declined. Because... No idea. He may have demonstrated in the scene before that he doesn't need what was offered to him but still, a reasonable person would simply not say no, it was supposed to be the last (and only) thing he needed for his HEA and he's like thanks, no thanks?! Silly. So silly.

Uhhhh this is a DNF rounded up basically because towards the end I was really skimming. I really liked the first book so this one being bad is disappointing. Jason was so annoying and just got even more annoying as the book progressed. Cormac was a literal nonentity. The romance was barely there and then all of a sudden they’re saying I love you? Also I truly did not care about spy/action plot but honestly it didn’t seem like the authors did either

Let me start with that I liked this one better than the first.

That said, I want to first mention the things that really irked me so we conclude with a happy note.

So, I already mentioned in the first one that I don't know why it was even a shifter book in the first place. In this one, the same question arose. There are very few instances where there is an actual shift and not one ability of their animal half is needed for the task at hand. Escaping was done via helicopter - not being carried by an eagle or some such, spying on a tree in all black doesn't require being a cat and on it goes. Not even their personalities or mannerisms are linked to their animal, I can only vaguely remember someone loving fish and that it had something to do with his shifter half but that was it. So my question remains... Why? Only to give the story a little pizzazz?

The I love you`s were a bit more believable and smooth in this one, though I still had the feeling of them coming out of nowhere. You heard that they went on regular walks but only partook in one short one on page. Without theme interacting and having more moments like the one with the doggy ball it is hard to put oneself in the mindset of someone in love.

This one irked me the most. I understand that nowadays we all strive to be accepted exactly the way we are, but this one took it to a whole other level. It irked me so much I even subtracted a star just for this. What was it, that made me so irritated? Well, as thanks the king offered Jason the opportunity of curing him of his debilitating illness and make him into a shifter himself. And he declined stating that Cormac loved him the way he was illness and all and he would rather get married - something that was already granted by the king at the beginning of the story. I'm sorry but NO. Really? Really? You don't talk this through with your fiancé first? A life altering decision that also impacts those around you? Really? You would rather faint at any hint of anxiety, threat, etc. Really? You would rather be ill and chance the illness getting worse with age? Really? You don't care that other illnesses or infections can worsen your condition as well as cause possible life threatening complications? Really? You really want to always have to be conscious of hydration, heat exposure, alcohol and caffeine intake, always having to be aware of your stress and anxiety level especially during dangerous moments, not being able to stand or sit upright for a prolonged period. And always having to be extra careful while being intimate. Yes guys, intercourse is a physical activity that increases heart rate etc., which is glossed over.
Not to mention, that he didn't even ask other pertinent questions such as, "Do we have the same lifespan? What else would change with me becoming a shifter? Would I feel different? Would my DNA completely change or would there just be some information added? Would this change my personality? How do you feel about this my fiancé?
If at least some of these questions were asked and if he were not ill/i> but had IDK a limp, scars, burn scars, a missing limb and they could both live happily ever after together for approximately the same period of time I wouldn't mind at all that he declined. I know someone-s who have a missing arm/fingers and sure they will not climb a rocky outcrop anytime soon but they are healthy.
There is being inclusive and there is plain stupidity. Show me a person who wouldn't jump at the chance of being cured of an incurable illness where you are reliant on other people, health care professionals, regular intake of medication as well as a strikt regime, and all that with minimal to no risks involved of that cure having an adverse affect. Yeah, I thought so...
And what does it say about Cormac and Jason's relationship that Jason's illness is an important factor to their relationship. Doesn't the person count, the personality, their mannerisms? Wouldn't you want and wish for your significant other to be healthy? And consider this: the whole book revolves not mainly about the mystery but around Jason's medical condition and what he can, can't do, how he feels on the verge of fainting especially during dangerous moments etc. and when he gets an out he... didn't take it?
Please don't get me wrong here and I stand corrected and accept other peoples opinion but I just don't get it. All the people I've lost and the people I know who have lost their near and dear to illness, I just cannot wrap my head around it.

Okay, now let's move on to more positive shores.

I liked that there was little to no conflict between Cormac and Jason. I also enjoyed Jason taking the piss out of Silicat and Vega. (I hope I remembered correctly) I also liked Jason's personality even though it changed unexpectedly during the book which threw me for a bit. I found him to be a maybe sassy, self-asured, self-reliant man on the more reserved side when it comes to public outings, you know the person who is quieter during parties but when surrounded by his 10 best friends he is open, funny etc.. Well in the second half, as soon as he was introduced to society he suddenly was this extraverted, life of the party, openly sassy to people and around people he didn't know etc.. While I liked both characters they felt like exactly that 2 different persons.

Who I loved throughout the book was Mouse 😍 The "side eye" was strong in her 😂

Still an entertaining read, maybe I will pick up the next one to see if the improvement will continue until I love an installment. *fingers crossed

This was very sweet for all that we're still caught up in all the danger to the realm. I appreciated that in this book we get a much better understanding of how this world of shifters exists within the modern world. Seeing things through Jason's perspective definitely helped clarify a lot of things that were more vague in the first novel as it was very wrapped up in the initial investigation.

Cormac is grumpy and frustrated, well grumpy by nature and frustrated being stuck on the sidelines while he healed from the mine explosion. The last thing he's expecting is some random human showing up on his doorstep claiming to be his fiance, let alone that that fiance has been attacked by shifters (not that Jason knows that). I appreciated the little places that this book dovetailed with the first fitting the simultaneous stories in nicely together. Jason was hilarious and the best kind of ridiculous. Smart, but just silly enough to muss up his hide bound duke. He and Cas are going to be trouble. :)

Jason's illness in this novel was super interesting. His POTS sounds crazy and like a lot to live with, but I loved that he's still such a positive person. He's refused to let that derail him from having a life and of course Mouse is just awesome.

Looking forward to the next book in the series, but it's still SO far out!

This was at least entertaining. Still over the top packed with too much humor and pop culture references and with action scenes that belonged in b movies. I liked the side characters though and the service dog Mouse. It was not a chore to read, and that's the best recommendation I can give about this story.

Make sure to read book one first!

Action, danger, old debts, and new love. There was lots of banter - I really liked Jason and Cormac as well as the people around them.

This is unique world!

There are some overlapping scenes with book one which helped me remember it.

ARC review

Book: Dangerous by Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake (09/03/2023).

Dangerous is the second book in the Shifter Scoundrels series tells how the lion shifter Duke of Everard, Cormac Donegan, found his HEA, alongside his lovable human, Jason Reaves, not forgetting to mention the sweet mouse.

The shifter world mixed with royalty, the warm and cuddly romance between them, the mystery surrounding the death of important characters and the way Jason's condition was portrayed were my highlights of this reading (sure later, I will chase after Notorious for knowing more of Caspian and Saphir).

The book aiming to delve deeper into shifter royalty and its mysteries, scandals and its future couples is the perfect read for shifter royalty lovers.

The 17-chapter narrative is narrated in the third person but gives us a great understanding of its situations and events in its 254 pages.

My first real shifter read and my only criticism is that it ended up and needed more of Cormac, Jason, Sillian, Vegas, Caspian, Saphir and all the other characters that won my heart, that's why I don't give 5 stars, lie!

I'd like to see more of Cormac as Dahlia and her few prowess as a sexy James Bond just don't cut it 😭 (reference) and would also like to know about the killer's identity, but I see this gossip is being saved for scandal and I can't wait (for while I'll stick with Notorious and see if it clarifies my ideas about this book and the ones to follow).

(I'm going to stop writing because this review is turning out to be longer than expected and I don't want to risk giving away a spoiler).

Then Dangerous is the perfect book for you if you like shifter royalty, arranged marriage tropes, suspense, action, a dash of drama, real scandals and gossip, and a heart-warming romance between a human and a shifter.

P.S.: My first ARC review I hope I did well.

so good

That was a great continuation of book one. In this one we me the widowed fiancé who we briefly met in book one. We learn he’s not exactly how Cas described him, and learn more of why the young prince got along with him and was going to marry him. We meet his mate and get to see the gooey protection. The writing was great, I enjoyed the story that had me swooning and laughing out loud. The smexy was good, and I loved all of the side characters. We are still falling the on going plot, we got to see it at another vantage point. This will carry on into the next book with Beau. I will say color me happily surprised to find out what the king looks like. The way I screamed. Can we please get his story? Yay for diversity!

This one takes place at the same time as the first book which worked for who was the romance, I found it a little sweeter, more wholesome. I enjoyed it while reading but have to conclude this was on me and not liking the regency era though if that’s your thing I think it’s perfect for you, the romance, the intrigue it’s perfect.
