Marilyn Marks is a fantasy romance author who loves all things swords and sass. With a weakness for bad men and time periods that aren’t her own, she loves to pen books featuring otherworldly creatures, epic duels, high stakes and lots of steamy romance. When not writing, she can be found watching anything based in the early 1900’s, hanging out with her husband, or fending off her vicious and deceptively spry one-eyed shih tzu.

An amazing sequel, even better than the first one!

Full of twist, angst, morally grey characters.

An epic love story, of the like I haven’t seen in a while.

Complex and fleshed out characters with great world building.

The pacing was perfect, I could not put it down. The perfect balance of action, violence, heartache, hope and romance!

The writing was also top notch and made the story come alive in an exquisite way!

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange of an honest review

Where do I even begin??

Last year I raved about The Prince of Prohibition, and I’m back to say that the sequel is EVEN BETTER. The Veil of Violence took me by surprise in so many ways & also managed to meet & then exceed all of my expectations.

Let’s talk about the basics: this is a fae fantasy set in the 1920s. Yes, that is just as perfect as it sounds! We’ve got gatsby vibes but also the very sinister yet whimsical feel that comes with fair folk & their ways. The lore in this series astounds me, with so much that feels fresh & new but also inclusion of a lot of the more classic faerie mythology. This book dives a lot deeper into this side of things, & does it in the most organic & gripping way.

We learn much more about the current state of things for Addie, Jack & their crew in the present time, but we ALSO get a glimpse into memories from times before. These were stunningly written & heartbreaking, but full of love and hope too. It was the perfect way to get to know the characters we love, as well as to fill the gaps in how they came to be the complex people they are. The action is also plentiful, & impeccably mixed in with character & relationship building moments as well as world building.

And finally, I have to talk about the characters. Addie has been through so very much so far, & her growth is unbelievable. She is so complex & fierce, but also deeply imperfect. She feels like a very real person to me, & I’ve adored the amount of change she has seen. Jack Warren is actually, truly the perfect morally grey character. He is brutal & frightening but also so tortured, and also firmly aware of the things that make him an anti-hero. He loves so deeply, & this shows even more fully in the flashback scenes. I already adored this man, but he’s got even more of a chokehold on me now.

I already believe this is going to be near the top of my top reads for 24’. I actually, truly could not put it down, and I hope allllllll of you will be picking this up ASAP!

Thank you to the author for the arc copy 💕

This is one of the very few series where I have to admit I should have done a reread of the previous book before starting this one. I knew a lot happened in book one, that this series is filled with lots of worldbuilding, twists and turns and complicated (but great) plot development, so I should have realized it was impossible to still remember it all. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy 'The Veil of Violence', because I truly loved it! It just wouldn't have taken me as long to get into the story again.

So let this be a warning for everyone who read book one months ago; I recommend rereading book one before starting book two. Where book one held on tight on a huge amount of questions, book two slowly starts to reveal more and more answers while gradually showing us the past that led to the bond between our two main characters. I absolutely love the twists and turns in this story; this is definitely one of those series where it's important to expect the unexpected.

There is a lot to love about book two: the character development is awesome, we learn more and more about the world (both past and present), and the plot only delves deeper and deeper to give readers an awesome story. I definitely can't wait for book three.

The Veil of Violence by Marilyn Marks is without question the most beautiful love story I've ever read! If you read nothing else this year let it be this series and this book!!💖

🖋️Review

There is no star rating in existence that would properly explain how amazing this masterpiece, The Veil of Violence, is. ♾️⭐

This book picks up right where book one, The Prince of Prohibition left off. Our FMC, Adeline, is on the run and our MMC, Jack, is trying to find her. We explore flashbacks, love letters, and lots of angst in book two.

I've never read a book that moved me quite the way this one did or made me ugly cry as hard. This wonderfully beautiful love story was so poetically written. It's a love story that spans time and space, and explores how our souls are given to others bit by bit.

I love how the author explored grief and loss and the power of love, societal barriers and different classes of people, and how we should protect those that society deems as less. The character growth and development in this book are top-tier, and the villain redemption arc was *Chef’s Kiss*.👩‍🍳💋

I also loved how she explains the choices we make, the consequences we live with, and how our free will leads to hard and sometimes wrong choices, but how ultimately judgment and forgiveness are a choice as well. From the action scenes to the heartwarming found family moments this book has something for everyone.

I loved book 1, but this book was even better then the first one! I loved being back in this world. I couldn't stop reading and really wanted to know how the story would continue.

The worldbuilding was out of this world. Marilyn really has a way of writing that just sucks you into the book and it feels like you are really in the book with the characters. The writingstyle was flowy and very descriptive. Marilyn really took her time with writing and creating a masterpiece on paper.

The characters development was amazing, it was so nice to learn so much about the characters with every chapter I've read. The chapters from Jack's POV put an nice depth in the story. I loved learning more and more about the characters, the past and the present. The twists and turns throughout the book kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read book 3 in the series.

Marilyn Marks thank you so much for this ARC to read and review. I loved every second of it!

thank you so much marilyn for sending me an arc of the veil of violence for my honest review.

the veil of violence is the second book in the fae of the roaring age trilogy (& i have to say i LOVED the second book just a little bit more than the first)! i feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest and repeatedly stomped on. this book emotionally destroyed me.

adeline’s character development is phenomenal in this book, and i fell absolutely in love with jack! i loved learning more about the history of annwyl and jack, the memories were my favourite parts! i also found myself rooting for tommy & lillian throughout the book.

i don’t know how i’m supposed to wait for the third book with that plot twist & cliffhanger - i need to know what happens!

i HIGHLY recommend this book/series. and i know 2024 only just began, but i know the veil of violence will be a top read for me this year!

I love you most

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The way she looked at me was worse. She did not cry for herself but for me.

This book has destroyed me. I’m an emotional wreck after finishing and I’ve been left with the kind of book hangover that I’m not sure I can recover from.

Marilyn Marks has created something truly special with this book. Something which a lot of authors strive for, but very few actually achieve. The kind of writing which walks a fine line between poetry and prose, a level of writing that could be considered art.

He watched me like I were a phantom, the ghost of an aching desire long withheld from his grasp.

We pick up this story with the first memory gifted to Addie by Estheria. We see the initial meeting of a young, tormented Prince Jaevidan and a carefree Annwyl. It’s the first of many stunningly beautiful memories, written with a skill and care that showcases Marks’ talents as an author. Addie only receives this first memory initially, and, with only her brother for company in Wales, we see her struggle with what this memory means.

“My name is Jaevidan,” I said. “What is yours?”  She smiled, her eyes crinkling in the corners. Like that, she was actually quite beautiful.  “Annwyl,” she said.

She is soon reunited with Jack and the gang. And we go through the process with Addie of trying to decide whether Jack can really be trusted. Slowly, over the course of the book, Jaevidan’s memories are revealed in a truly devastating, yet spectacular fashion.

“You foolish boy."

The character growth and journey which is created by writing the book in this way is just stunning. There is so much that we learn, so much history and back story. Yet most impactful is the fact that we go on the journey with Addie, seeing it all with her for the first time. I found myself laughing out loud in places, and crying ugly tears in others. The memories are beautiful, devastating and healing. It was so easy to empathise with Addie’s thought processes because we learn everything right along with her. And it makes the payoff that much sweeter knowing all that has been paid.

Jack had gone quiet a long time ago. I was the only one left singing.

While we slowly learn the truth of the memories, we see Addie and Jack hunted by the Knights, the once powerful Morigan and now the beansidhes, intent on using Addie for their own plans.

I was nothing but violence.

I loved the reunion of Addie with her found family, Will, Arthur, Lillian and Violet. The relationship between this group echoes that of the Court of Dreams in SJM’s ACOMAF.

"You came back." Tears streaked her face. She held mine like she needed proof I was real. "Of course I did." I brushed my nose against hers. "I will always come back to you."

As they battle to save themselves and their world, the pacing ramps up. I found myself racing to read the next scene, to find out what would happen next.

Minor Spoiler:

Twelve chimes of a church bell.

Minor Spoiler:

The ending is left as a delightful cliff-hanger and I don’t know how I’m going to wait until the next is released!!

"Where is she? Where is Annwyl?"

I adored this book. My favourite book has always been ACOMAF, but this book… it has such a similar vibe - learning the backstory, the history of “the villain”, redemption, character growth, betrayal, acceptance, healing, discovery. I just honestly loved it so much and I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time.

This book was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions and drama. The contrast between Jack's feral sidhe personality and the softer side of him shown with Addie was so well-written, I really loved the way this showed his character growth and how he was different from the other fae.

The book was really gripping, and I struggled to find a "safe" place to put it down and wanted to read it all in one sitting! There was so much action, and so much happening in every chapter. The first few chapters were a little slower, catching us up to where we left Addie and Tommy at the end of book one, but once they were reunited with Jack it was non-stop with one obstacle after another, punctuated with the emotional trauma of Jack's childhood memories.

I loved the way we were slowly drip-fed Jaevidan and Annwyl's story in the form of Jack's memories that were given to Adeline by the star. Their history slowly unraveled, matching up with the anecdotes we had from book one and expanded upon what we knew.

I did feel like I spent a lot of the book thinking "okay but why is this happening, and why isn't this character here, and when does this happen, and what is going on with this???" It kept me guessing and theorizing but I found it took me out of the story somewhat as I was in my head too much. However, when it all finally comes together in the last chapter it all paid off! I literally sat up and gasped "NO" because I had not guessed that ending at all!!

I can't wait for book three now that we have most of the answers, and we need to find out Jack and Addie are going to solve this latest problem!

I will never ever recover from this series. The first one I thought of, I kid you not, every day last year. It haunted my dreams in the best of ways. This sequel? An absolute mind blowing BANGER of a follow up!!

Marilyn has poured so much into creating this world, and it’s so obvious. The attention to detail, the lore, the plot twists, the romance… UGH!! It was incredible. Whoops! Let me drop these before I get carried away…

🥭 TROPES & THEMES 🥭
✔️ fae in the 1920s
✔️ morally grey MMC
✔️ slow burn with spice
✔️ found family
✔️ lore & history of characters explained
✔️ would do anything for her
✔️ darker and more… VIOLENT (I’m sorry)
✔️ LETTERS *weep*

Okay now that’s out of the way… let me be vague and review this book and not spoil anything. 🤣 I absolutely loved the flashbacks in this book. I could have continued to read them and not even been mad about it. Getting to know Jack/Jaevidan from the beginning was just so… everything! understanding why he is the way he is, and where his love of Annwyl came from. Oh my gosh. 🤌🏽

We jump from past to their present a lot and it’s easy to follow, and both time periods kept me invested and on my toes wanting to know what we would discover next. So many things came to light that I noticed in book 1 - and I LOVED that. Easter eggs are my favorite, and knowing she placed certain phrases and things so strategically just blew my little mind.

Marilyn Mark’s fantastical 1920’s fae series is one of the few books I’d carry out of a burning house, or take to a desert island. The reread factor is worth it for all the little nuggets of info you can catch - and the story is so rich and beautiful that I could honestly read it every day and never tire of it.

I’ll forever recommend this book series to anyone out there who loves to get lost in a book and adores a good romance… this book series has my heart completely and this sequel was stellar. I can’t wait for book 3!!

I loved the first one but this one was even better! With the help of memories I got to read Annwyl and Jeavidan's love story. As booktokers would say - EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!!! It made me feel all the feels! There was plenty of action, steamy encounters and a lot of personal growth. I liked Jack aka Jeavidan so much. I think he is my new fave book boyfriend. Adeline's change was gradual and smooth. The author seamlessly weaved past and present. The whole book had a nice steady pace.

I liked the world building and the side characters. Both Jack and Adeline had their own relationships with them. The love story here was epic. It held through time, space and magic. But the plot twist in the end shocked me in a good way. It explained certain things and made me want to read the next one ASAP. This author is really good and I am enjoying myself with this series. I hope the last in the trilogy comes out soon! I highly recommend it!

Thank you so so much to the author for sending me an e-arc of Veil of Violence in exchange for an honest review 🫶🏻

I loved the Prince of Prohibition (book 1), so it was no brainer I wanted to read Veil of Violence as soon as possible! This takes off straight after the end of book 1 and it was such a delight to be back into the world Marilyn created! I always struggle with reviews for sequels as I try not to spoil anything but at the same time, want to talk all about the plot twists and little details that you find out as you navigate this new reality Addie is facing – she is now a Fate and it’s so nice to see her being powerful and make her own decisions regarding everything, including Jack!

I loved Jack’s chapters, I love when there is some flashback chapters as you venture into a book, especially with 2nd chance romances and reincarnations – something I love about this romantasy. We get to know how Jack was growing up, his childhood, his traumas, how he come to meet and fall in love with Addie in her first life – and all the following ones.

The writing is still phenomenal, captivating you and keeping you prisoner until you reach the end – and even so, you’ll which you’ve slowed down and enjoyed it even more as now you’ll have to wait for the next book! I still strongly recommend The Prince of Prohibition – and now Veil of Violence!

What can I say about this amazing book without giving it all away!? The first one was like no other book I read and the second did not disappoint! I was instantly transported back to Jack Warren’s hotel in NYC during the prohibition era. I loved how this one was bit more romance based than the first. We get a look into the memories of Jack aka Jaevidan and how he fell in love with Annywl. It was such an emotional rollercoaster I caught myself tearing up at times. I could go on and on about Adeline and Jack but you for sure have to experience the beautiful and gut wrenching details yourself.

Ildathach is the fae realm that is hidden across the veil. I really thought the world building and characters were different from most fae books. It was really interesting to see its traditions and why the band of the banished never want to return. I also enjoyed how we took a deeper dive into Jack’s pact actions and why he chose to do it. I honestly thought we were done with plot twists but the ending shocked me! I need book three! The details and research that Marilyn put into book was apparent really solidified my love for her writing and series. I could not recommend this series more!

This book was wonderful. So often sequels fall short of the readers expectations. This one not only exceeded them but was somehow even better than the first book which was great. The author has done a beautiful job creating such an exciting world with some very dynamic characters. Learning the background of so many of them was so interesting to see how they came to be who they are. This book will have you feeling a full spectrum of emotions. I cannot wait for the third!

4/5 ⭐️
2.5-3/5 🌶️

Tropes:

Hidden fantasy world, need to save the world

Sheltered, country southern FMC
Mental health representation (PTSD of side character)

Cliff hanger 🫨

Okay so hear me out. The reason why this is 4/5 for me is because even though this book was super eventful, it was a lot of conflict for my taste. It really felt like one thing after another. And really the whole time I was like kind of wanting to shake the FMC and say “get over yourself!” Lol.

I love this story and world and can’t wait to read the next one. I hope in the next book we get some resolution, because the conflict was honestly starting to get to be a lot for me. I’ve seen this before in other book series and it really can go either way.

3 stars? Maybe 3.5 stars for great writing? 🤔⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 2 took a big step down from book 1 for me. Book 1 was a beautiful love story, with a little bit of fantasy sprinkled in. Book 2 was tons of fantasy, lore, and magical beings, with very little romance.

I did not realize this series was a trilogy, but now I can see it. This second book built up all the backstory and magical information, which you likely need in book 3 (no release date as of now).

Well over half this book (maybe more like 75-80%), was all flashback memories and stories. Which was great (and written well!), bc you learn so much of the MMC, but that meant very little page time for the present time and current characters and story. The story pretty much did not progress at all in the present time (from book 1 to 2).

Would I recommend? No. I’d say, read book 1 and stop. Then read book 2 and 3 (if you want to finish the series), once book 3 is released, that way you can move on from the major cliffhanger she leaves you with at the end of book 2. 😂 And so that you can understand why all the info dump in book 2.

The Veil of Violence was one of my most anticipated sequels of 2024 and it did not disappoint! This is one of those books that left me speechless and my mind reeling in the final few chapters.

The Fae of the Roaring Age trilogy is a fae fantasy set in the 1920's and has all the best Gatsby and ACOTAR Inner Circle Vibes!

TVOV picks up right where TPOP left off with Addie on the run. We get to see flashbacks of Jack's youth and his history with Annwyl. I absolutely loved learning more about Jack's history and the ruthless nature in the Fae kingdom.

The world building and mythology throughout TVOV was amazing and I loved Addies character development!

This book is full of action, angst and heartbreak. Combine that with plot twist and cliffhangers and I an dying for book 3! This is one of my current favourite series and I highly recommend this series to all fans of adult fantasy!

Thank you Marilyn Marks for gifting me an eARC of this book in return for an honest review!

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC of book two in Fae of the Roaring Ages! I loved being back with these characters and learning more about them and the fae world. I couldn’t believe all the twists this story took and I can honestly say I didn’t expect where this story lead which was so fun for me! I love Jack and Addie and am so excited to see where their story eventually ends up, especially after an insane ending! While it took me a little bit to get into it, I think that’s all due to the amazingly detailed world building the author does in the first and second book and I would definitely suggest reading these books together so you’re not struggling to remember details like me!!

Addie’s starting to come fully into her powers in this life, but with those powers come a whole host of enemies she had never imagined. There are also lifetimes worth of memories to assimilate and all the feelings associated with them; and all the reasons to both trust and fear Jack’s intentions. All in all, she’s got more than enough on her plate to handle. Like the first book, this one is dense with lush details, making it feel like the reader is right in the thick of things, looking over the shoulders of the main characters. But oh! That ending is all kinds of unfair. I need to know the rest of the story and I NEED to know it NOW!!!

What an emotional rollercoaster ride!! This is book 2, and in this book we get ALL the answers!! We get all of Jack and Addi's (Jaevidan and Annwyl's) history. I cried so much! Their story really is a love story that spans across centuries! Ughhhh, just so heart breaking, everything Annwyl endured. And for Jaevidan, she really was his EVERYTHING!! He really is the definition of an MMC who will burn down the world for his woman! I can't wait for book 3, because I need to know how this is going to end!!

This definitely felt longer than necessary. I really like the characters and the world building but it got to a point where I kept thinking “just get on with it already!” I also wish we got to spend more time with the MMC and FMC being happy together… Over the past two books it seems like we only got a few chapters or so of them being romantically happy with each other. I am looking forward to continuing the series, I just hope we get more of the main couple together.

This book was not as good as the first. There was spice sprinkled throughout. However it felt like it dragged on. Fantasy/Romantasy are hard for me as it's not my favorite genere. There was sweet romance and it was set in a unique era. Overall good enough.
