What happens when you fall asleep? Why do we need sleep? And what are dreams? Curious little children can lift over 30 flaps to find the answers to these questions and many more in this delightful introduction to sleep, with simple explanations and gorgeous illustrations on every page.
Katie has been writing non-fiction children's books for almost half her life and loves questioning the world from a child's point of view. She's developed some of Usborne's bestselling series, including the See Inside books and the Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers series.
Oof, this one was somewhat lighter on the biology side of things. And so much interesting neurobiology there is, too. And no mention of Freudian or Jungian dream analysis, either, which could have been fun, or dream myths or cultural aspects, etc.
Nothing about circadian rhythms and core body temps. Flowers are shown, petals closed at night, but nothing about the dark cycles or photosynthesis. Some allusion to children having grown in the night ("your body has time to mend and grow"), but that's about it. Heart rate, rapid eye-movement, early and late risers (and the genetics behind that...!) - sadly, no.
I dunno. Maybe it's me. There's so much about sleep that is interesting (even if it's just about what types of beds people use and have used throughout time, or what can happen if you don't sleep (okay, psychosis not a good topic for very young kids, I know, but still! Fascinating!), or somnambulation (sleep-walking - who does it (often children) and why?, or....).
I have high expectations for Katie Daynes's stuff now. And this fell a bit short.
If it was just meant to be for the preschool audience, then even "how can I get to sleep?"/ counting sheep could have been addressed. Or addressing fears of the dark and nightmares. Or suggestions on how to sleep better (with or without socks, for example). What are pillows stuffed with?
Not sure it even adequately addressed the titular question, really. And it's been one I've been asking myself for several years, as I'm constantly awakened during the night.
