Opening the Door of Truth is the ultimate goal for many a witch. Gathering enough power to do so is no easy feat however, and a popular method is entering into a “Witches’ Marriage,” a contractual bond that generates more power the closer they grow. Melissa is one such witch—but is her heart truly immune to the adorable Tanya as she claims?
Tanya and Melissa are participating in the ‘witches’ marriage’, which is basically a narrative excuse for them to be living together. But this is far from Melissa’s first kick at the can and she’s ready to use and dispose of yet another girl, except Tanya keeps being incredibly cute. That’s the book.
I mean, you could read one chapter of this manga and you have basically read every chapter of this manga. Melissa is scheming something, Tanya is adorable, Melissa is hoist by her yuri petard. Rinse and repeat.
There are a couple of permutations, like Melissa’s ridiculous rival whose own solution to the marriage issue is even more outrageous than Melissa’s ongoing (until now) set of suitors, but mostly it is strictly by its formula.
Which, hey, it’s fine. I actually had a pretty good time with this, minus a couple caveats. Melissa getting herself into her own comeuppance is rather fun because of how goofy the art gets when she’s recoiling from Tanya’s affection. Don’t read this for the plot, read it for the gags and the charm.
Tanya doesn’t have as much presence as Melissa, true, but she turns out to be less naive (though she is plenty of that) and more incredibly straightforward. She just loves Melissa and that includes her bad side as well as her good.
Which is for the best, as some of Melissa’s scheming to humiliate Tanya just out of petty reasons veers a bit close to bullying and doesn’t exactly jive with her actions as far as stringing her along goes. Mostly she’s just a very silly person who won’t recognize her feelings, but it does make her act out a bit.
And they keep that bit of darkness, though they eventually defang Melissa’s big pile of conquests by showing what actually happened and I kind of wish they hadn’t because it was more effective storytelling when Tanya was winning Melissa over despite it all rather than Melissa also being pathetic in her own way.
As a yuri, eh, it’s okay. Like I said, this witch wedding concept is strictly a narrative excuse, which, hey, at least they make the most of it (even if they reiterate it way too much). If this was a guy and a girl it wouldn’t read especially different, frankly, minus the sleepwear (which you can tell somebody had a grand time designing).
If you don’t like running gags or endless variations on the exact same theme, this is not your book. I had a pretty good time with it and am expecting to enjoy more (all… three volumes? Uh oh…), but it’s very silly stuff. Fortunately I like that, sometimes.
3.5 stars - a mostly good time with some strong artistic chops, a pretty sweet core, and a good sense of comedic timing, but also a bit off at times. Not something I think I’d ever give 4 stars to, but worth a touch more than the base 3 at the same time.
The artwork is good though I’ve never been a big fan of big age gaps whether it’s in Yaoi or Yuri or straight romance Mangas with this one it’s kind of silly Though after you read the first chapter you kind of got a feel for what the rest of it’s going to be yes before anybody asked his debts get an extra point because it has which is Annette everybody knows me right now is rolling their eyes. I don’t know if I’m really going to be in a big hurry to read the rest of this I might though I’m not 100% sure it’s not horrible but it’s not really great either there are better yuri Mango out there than this
OMMMMGGGG, I did NOT expect this to be THIS fucking cute! OMG. These two are just so precious, and Melissa is so deredere and I love every moment of this one. She started out with fake dating but she is falling HARDDDDD and I am all for it! Let's go! I am shipping these two like mad. That book they have with all the tips is just adorable and I love how it makes Melissa blush so much. I love that to gain access to something you need to do a marriage and get to it together. I cannot wait to see the doors open and the wedding ceremony begin. On to the next volume! EEEEP! Oh, and Shion is also adorable. Teehee.
Suuuper cute fantasy GL story. Each short chapter charmed my heart. And the studio is made up of 30 people?! That sounds like such a fun way to create comics. <3
this is quite adorable and I really love the art style...I'm a sucker for grumpy x sunshine and melissa slips into tsundere territory anytime tanya shows her affection, which makes their interactions so damn adorable. the only slightly uncomfy piece here is the age gap...their ages aren't ever explicitly stated, but tanya is definitely young, which is played up by her innocence and sweetness. tanya is drawn as a mature (and quite busty) woman. there's a flashback 10y into the past, where melissa is definitely a little kid whilst tanya is a young girl...even in the present, tanya refers to melissa as 'girl' multiple times. I don't love that piece and wish melissa had been aged up a bit, which could've easily been done without losing her innocence as a character.

Fluffy and cute with a curious story-shape: the smaller / younger witch, Tanya, keeps foiling the older / taller / more jaded witch, Melissa, with her charm and genuineness. Melissa's goal is to use Tanya to increase her power, as she did with other young witches, but no such luck. There are adversaries whose main goal seem to be embarrassing Melissa. Other than that --not much going on. Fun outfits. Episodes about mundane witch-life. I can't imagine continuing with this series since I didn't like buxom Melissa nor child-like Tanya enough as characters, and also felt uneasy about this marriage between an adult and a child, even if it's more of a business arrangement. Really impressive art, though. There's a bit of an explanation of how this manga came together, and the number of professionals involved in the end-matter that was interesting.
Melissa is arrogant and Tanya is perhaps too cute. I enjoy the good black cat and golden retriever dynamic. This is a quick read of multiple short chapters.
Although at times this feels like style over substance, the base story about Melissa realizing that she can't just use Tanya for her power because she's falling for her is really sweet.
Cute romance, loving the cool witch being too enamored of the enthusiastic witch to be as cold-hearted as she thinks she wants to be. Looking forward to more of this.
Söpö ja ihan kiva romanttinen fantasiasarja. Fantasian sijaan painopiste tosin on söpöilyssä ja will they won’t they -romantiikassa. Sopii hetken viihteeksi. Sangen erikoista! Jälkikäteen kirjaa selatessani olinkin näkevinäni kohtia, joissa piirrostyyli erottui aiemmasta.
Some may be offended by the fact that the little witch in this story appears to be child and is in a relationship with her sempai or that there are same sex relations at all (honestly I thought Tanya looked a bit like Ahiru from Princess Tutu) but I can assure you there is no sexual content in this volume seeing as one of Tanya's charms is her purity so please consider this before ignoring this series.
One thing I find really interesting about this book is it is not worked on exclusively by a single mangaka similar to how CLAMP is a collection of talented people but a whole team (who get introduced at the end of the volume.) All n all this is a pretty cute story about fledgling affections between a more experienced witch named Mellissa and her adorable kouhai Tanya. Sadly, although it is still early on and will probably only really focus on the main two witches when dealing with relationships I would like to know if this world has a male equivalence like warlocks who can be part of the "Witch Marriage" too. I understand in general witches are centered around a sisterhood and the Earth Mother (from what I recall in the past) but if only women can become witches in this world those few that are not interested in other girls are basically doomed to only opening the Door of Truth through the harder normal methods and might have to chose between love and power in the end.
As for the characters I really enjoyed the chemistry not only between Melissa and Tanya but also others that also share their world as the two of them continue to explore their feelings for one another and the art is absolutely stunning showing the incredible talent of the team that put this series together. I for one am looking forward to seeing more on how these two continue to grow in the future.
