चाणक्य

चाणक्य सुविख्यात उपन्यासकार भगवतीचरण वर्मा की अंतिम कृति है, जिसमें उन्होंने मगध-साम्राज्य के पतन का विस्तृत चित्रण किया है। मगध-सम्राट महापद्म नंद और उसके पुत्रों द्वारा प्रजा पर जो अत्याचार किये जा रहे थे, राज्यसभा में आचार्य विष्णुगुप्त ने उनकी कड़ी आलोचना की; फलस्वरूप नंद के हाथों उन्हें अपमानित होना पड़ा। विष्णुगुप्त का यही अपमान अंततः उस महाभियान का आरंभ सिद्ध हुआ, जिससे एक ओर तो आचार्य विष्णुगुप्त ‘चाणक्य’ के नाम से प्रख्यात हुए और दूसरी ओर मगध-साम्राज्य को चंद्रगुप्त जैसा वास्तविक उत्तराधिकारी प्राप्त हुआ।

भगवती बाबू ने इस उपन्यास में इसी ऐतिहासिक कथा की पर्तें उघाड़ी हैं। लेकिन क्रम में उनकी दृष्टि एक पतनोन्मुखी राज्य-व्यवस्था के वैभव-विलास और उसकी उन विकृतियों का भी उद्घाटन करती है जो उसे मूल्य-स्तर पर खोखला बनाती हैं और काल-व्यवधान से परे आज भी उसी तरह प्रासंगिक हैं।

इस उपन्यास की प्रमुख विशेषता यह भी है कि चाणक्य यहाँ पहली बार अपनी समग्रता में चित्रित हुए हैं। उनके कठोर और अभेद्य व्यक्तित्व के भीतर भगवती बाबू ने नवनीत-खंड की भी तलाश की है। अपने महान जीवन-संघर्ष में स्वाभिमानी, संकल्पशील, दूरद्रष्टा और अप्रतिम कूटनीतिज्ञ के साथ-साथ वे एक सुहृद् प्रेमी और सद् गृहस्थ के रूप में भी हमारे सामने आते हैं। निश्चय ही, ‘चित्रलेखा’ और ‘युवराज चूण्डा’ जैसे ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों के क्रम में लेखक की यह अंतिम स्मरणीय कृति है।

"अपना परिचय? इस भूखंड का एक नगण्य सा प्राणी जन्म-मरण की सीमाओं में बंधा हुआ।"

इस उपन्यास के आरंभ में चाणक्य कुछ इस प्रकार अपना परिचय देता है। इसके उपरांत ये पूरी कहानी है चाणक्य की उस कठिन यात्रा की - इस कटु सत्य के मात्र भान होने से लेकर इसकी वास्तविक चेतना होने तक।

A decent historical novel by Verma.

Well on the whole I was disappointed a lot with this book coming from the author of Chitralekha. The plot that was quite vast was reduced to quoting few known and proven facts from the time of Maurya empire. The story if it could be called that, didn't throw any light on the way things were or being done. The gold was coming from some place steadily and army was being built to counter Dhannanda and the portrayal was in such a way that it seemed time and again that these deeds were mere consequences and could have been performed by any Tom dick or harry involved. The book couldn't do justice to the stature of Chanakya or Chandragupta and utterly failed to explain or emphasize either, why they have become such iconic figures in Indian history and thinking. Add to it the writer added last 2 pages out of minuscule 128 to the rumour of Chanakya and Vatsayan being same person. So on the whole the book was a disappointment throughout, in which ever way you look. The things told in the prose may be proven or most probable facts but they do not go deeper. The book fails to build a world of past based on known facts with addition of some fantasy to it, which is the writer's prerogative.

This historical novel by Varma gives a vivid description of the life and times of Vishugupt(or Chanakya).

The author had already shown his caliber for writing historical novels in his previous book Chitralekha, but this last historical novel is undoubtedly his masterpiece.

He exposed the failings of the Magadha empire in the background, while his primary characters fill the foreground of the story by cleverly plotting against the state. His treatment of the humiliation of a poor Brahmin at the courts of the Nanda kings forms a effective backdrop, to the ultimate revenge that he extracts.

The book is a personal favorite because of the brilliant use of Hindi and it's treatment of the storyline.
