Pilkington writes what I call "junkfood literature." His works are not particularly deep, thought-provoking or beautiful, but they are, for the most part, fast-paced, entertaining and light enough that I keep coming back. They won't move you or stir up emotions, but they will hook you and keep you in suspense. Great beach reads.

Someone To Save You was not as gripping as the first book in the Emma Holden series, but it was still a pleasure to read and held my attention to the last page. It seems like this is a likely candidate for a book 2, because there were several characters and events that never got explained. And Pilkington did say to watch for another Sam Becker book in December 2014.

If you like especially realistic drama with heavy violence, etc., this is not for you. The character reactions are sometimes very forced and artificial. The characters do a lot of over-analyzing which can be tiresome. However, when I turn to Pilkington, I'm not looking for a deep, life-changing experience. I want light, entertaining junkfood drama and that's what I get.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be back for more of Pilkington's novels. His writing style is not for everyone, but I definitely appreciate his light-reading, fast-moving approach and am glad to incorporate his work into my rotation of pleasure reads.

This is certainly a page turner, certainly an engrossing book that makes you forget everything around you or what you need to do, you just need to stick with this story as its page after page exciting, its page after page alluring its page after page.........fantastic

This is certainly fast paced from start to finish without any let up as Paul Pilkington keeps up his standard for his readers.

The scene that opens the book is amazing. It has you on the edge of your street right away.
There he is, Sam, being flagged down by a child...what does he find?
A woman in a car on a railway track, her 2 young children sat at the back of the car.
OMG, the train is coming.........

This is the opening and let me tell you, it gets better and better and better.
I had to finish this before I went to sleep. I kept getting up dousing my face in cold water, yes I know, sad init, but I just wanted, NO needed to find out what happened.

On top of this, we have another story pending all around it which really does get to the core of things and makes you sit glued to where you are and just finish it.

Its very hard to put it down once you open this book.....
It should come with a warning...
Good for people who suffer with insomnia! They would have no problem trying to stay awake, I resented my body needing sleep that night.
I finished it though!

I highly recommend this book to all who love fast paced, can't put it down ...books

*My thanks go to Thomas & Mercer via Net Galley for my copy*

And many thanks to the author.

In the style of James Patterson this book is fast paced and easy to read once you start keeping you interested from the 1st page. Sam Becker encounters a family suicide and rescues them. Sam Becker’s sister was murdered and raped by his best friend who was sent to prison all the while insisting his innocence who has now been released. Now he is being followed and has been having strange things happen like phone calls when no one is there. Are the suicide and these strange happenings tied into his sister’s murder? Great read. I would like to thank the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

A special thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

British author, Paul Pilkington delivers a gripping and complex psycho-thriller, SOMEONE TO SAVE YOU —an intriguing suspense leaving your head spinning.

As the novel opens, there is a teenage girl running. Sam Becker, a London based cardiothoracic surgeon is in his car on a trip to celebrate his sister’s birthday. He is trained and accustomed to dealing with emergency situations. However, nothing prepares him for this.

The girl Allison, she says… clearly needs help. The teen comes out of no here. Near a railroad. No trains, yet. She says her mum needs help. They need help. He follows and sees a car next to a railroad. The car is locked. There are two young children in the back seat-a boy and girl about a year old in booster seats. The woman is handcuffed to the steering wheel. What the heck?

A suicide attempt? Adrenaline kicking in, heart pounding, he reaches for the mobile, but he left it in the front seat of his car. There is no time to go back. He tries speaking with the woman pleading…you do not want to kill your children. A train could come any minute and tells her ---Allison would not want to see this. He gets a stone and starts hammering the window. The kids are crying. He is so close to the handle. He reaches for the handbrake.

The wheels were jammed in between the tracks. He grabs the children, and Allison is screaming to help her mum. The train was coming in the distance. He could hear it. Where are the keys to the handcuffs? No answer. Where is Jessica? She was in the back. The boot. He is desperately trying to find the boot release lever. The train was bearing down. A tiny baby. All goes black.

A murder. A crash. A train. A car. He is now in the hospital and his wife is asking him questions. An investigation. Why was he at the location of the crash? He says a teenage girl came out of nowhere and he followed her to the car next to the railway. She was desperate and needed his help.

He was driving back from a family event in the Northwest. His sister’s birthday. She died when she was young. It was the anniversary of your thirtieth birthday. It was supposed to be a celebration.

In the aftermath of this chilling drama, he is hailed as a hero by the press—but to the investigating police, things do not add up. There is a problem. Allison is missing. He does not want the publicity or the story to pick up his sister’s death –to have to relive. However, there is a leak. Someone is taunting him. Sick games.

Fifteen years ago, Sam Becker’s sister was killed, a brutal rape and murder. A tragedy that haunts him to this day—his best friend Marcus, was jailed for her murder. Their mum and dad were finally trying to move on with their lives. He needed to see a PTSD counselor.

A good Samaritan saves train crash family. No mention of his name. Soon Sam finds himself drawn into a conspiracy of lies and organized crime that puts his own life in danger.

To further complicate, Marcus is out of prison, hoping for reconciliation and determined to clear his name. He could walk free. Marcus had never offered any explanation. He always protested his innocence, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

A camping trip in North Whales. Cathy had gone. Covered in Marcus’s DNA. Never found the murder weapon. She said they had been dating for months. He had written Sam as to his innocence. He does not want his parents to know this monster is out.

Sam is forced to confront his own dark past, but as the layers of deceit are peeled back, can he really trust anyone around him? Who is this person terrorizing them? Sending emails and texts. Who would record and torture him, using his sister’s name? When nothing is as it appears.

The railway track. The poor children strapped in. Creepy, mysterious. The woman in the car. Drowned girl. Drugs in a locker. A set up. A suicide or murder? The teenage girl. Black Wolves. A patient. Now Anna the wife has been kidnapped.

A twisted intriguing multi-layered psycho-crime mystery, keeping you in suspense until the very end. Readers will love trying to put the pieces, lies, and secrets together --how it connects with Cathy’s murder. (I like)...

My first book by Paul and look forward to reading more!

This was good apart from places where the author doesn't make paragraph breaks and it makes for very confusing reading. His previous book I read was the same. In a couple of places there were continuity errors too and at one point one sister mentioned when there were two.......aggravating little things like this.
It tells of a heart surgeon who happens across a family suicide and heroically rescues most of them. Fifteen years prior to this his sister had been murdered and it seems bizarre but afterwards thing appear to tie in with her death. It was a great story but those little niggles for me spoilt it, sadly.

Total disappointment. The premise of the book is good, the execution is appalling.

The book is way too long to the point that I felt like screaming as ANOTHER CHAPTER ended with hardly any development. The twists and mystery seemed forced and frustrating.

Sams Sister - Cathy - was murdered several years ago. In fact I think about 15 years ago. Sam feels very guilty about not being able to save her and feels responsible. So too does Louisa ... So too does Sams parents and so too does Marcus. All of them REPEATEDLY drone on about the death and constantly apologise. For a character that is dead from page one she featured heavily in every chapter.

The main character - Sam - is cringeworthy. He's this top London surgeon.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON
=========================

He's been involved in two heroic incidents yet continually questions himself and apologises for not quite saving everyone. His wife is taking hostage and yet within 20 minutes he's performing a heart transplant on a young girl who he cares for and worries about outside of work.

So Cathy was murdered. Marcus got the blame. However in actual fact on the night of Cathys death some guy called Vincent tried chatting her up. Marcus told him to leave her alone.

That single act resulted in:

Vincent murdering Cathy (a girl he met once)
Vincent framing Marcus
Marcus serving 15 years for murder
Vincent then plots a fake suicide attempt causing Sam to intervene and save Alison
...
...
Vincent and some others then start tormenting sam with phone calls and emails - fake websites with her sister featured.
They also kidnap his wife
They use Marcus

...

I can't be bothered to go on and it just confuses me. The book was appalling and a waste of time.

I found this to be a really good book, the story had me hooked from the first chapter.
However, it ended a bit abruptly I thought & did leave me asking one too many questions, like - Huh! but what happened?

I would of prefered a lil bit of a explanation as to what happened at the end. I don't wanna give too much away, so wont go into detail as to why I was a bit lost at the end.

But it hasnt put me off & I downloaded his other book to read. Just hope it doesnt end in the same way - with no explanations.

I REALLY enjoyed most of this book.
I loved all the drama and the way he'd often leave you hanging. However, the motive turned out to be weak and unbelievable. That is the reason I am only giving this book three stars. On top of that... the ending was abrupt and disappointingly anticlimactic!

BLUF: Quick paced thriller that will hook you from the start, but may leave you with questions in the end.

**I was provided a copy of this book from netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review**

This book will hook you from the first page and not let you go until you finish. Truly. It's the first book I have read in a long time that keeps me interested and wanting more. Despite being exhausted, I just had to finish the last 20% of the book last night. I couldn’t bring myself to put this book down.

Someone to Save You begins with our protagonist, Sam Becker, being drawn to a potential suicide – a mother who intends to kill herself and her children by placing their car on the train tracks and waiting to be struck by the next train. What starts as an appreciation for Sam’s heroic actions soon takes a sick twist by opening wounds in Sam’s past and plunging Sam into a living nightmare.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fast paced and kept me thinking about what I had read so far. Throughout this book, I had suspicions about characters, but could never finger one person or another as the culprit. There was never enough reason to blame one person over another.

I also adored the relationships between the characters in this book. I thought these were well done and believable, although the relationship between Sam and his wife was lacking.

My only issue with this book is that the end leaves the readers with questions. That said, I wouldn’t let these questions stop you from picking up this book.

How disappointing! The writing annoyed me with the constant use of names in speech, the repeated spelling error 'focussed', the abrupt ending, the lack of characterisation (Jody and Locky for example... Who are they?!), and the implausibility or Sam's actions - the operation in the middle of his search for his wife. I was really hoping for better. I was guessing all the way through who the perpetrator might be, and sadly the choice was obvious and boring. In the author's defence, the book does make you think, but depressingly, leaves you totally unfulfilled.

Pilkington's story of a doctor, his murdered sister, his accused best friend contains a myriad of twists but left me unsatisfied. The book is wordy and the climax leaves me wondering about the realism of all the efforts taken by the villain.

I enjoyed the book for the most part, but found the motive flimsy and thought it was rushed at the end just to get the book done. It fell flat and I didn't quite believe all the strings tied together and the reason for the hurt, secrets and murders.

Sam seems to be a man of mystery - he just happened to be first on the scene when a mother drove her car on to a railway line. He manages to rescue the children before the train came. Fifteen years ago his best friend was found guilty of raping and murdering his sister, but has now been released from jail still insisting his innocence. Now Dr Sam is being followed and is getting strange messages, silent phone calls. The idea of this is great but for me it just didn't come off. So many loose ends, characters behaving unprofessionally, a hurried finale and the the reveal which was totally implausible. The author was good at taking the reader along on a thrilling ride, but the trouble was he then leaves you stranded at the top of a roller coaster! This is the first book I've read by this author and I may try another in the future. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

Review featured at books-n-kisses.com

This is a quick read that isn’t a real brain teaser but at the same time keeps your interest. This is a re-release from recently. I am not sure if it just didn’t do as well as the publisher wanted but it seems weird to re-release already. Now that being said this would make a good quick read for someone who enjoys thrillers without a lot of suspense.

The writing style is a bit different for me. While I enjoy thrillers I want to be absorbed in it and hopefully not figure it out until the end. I can’t say that is what happened with this one and yet I would recommend it. However if you are looking for deep-thinking and edge of your seat suspense this might not be what you want to pick up.

This could have had a much higher rating.

As a thriller, it is excellently paced, well developed and you invest in the characters.

The ending let everything down. Not so much what it was, that was kind of obvious but also fitting. But the way it just happened so quickly. The reading experience was like:

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN trip/oh ok. The end.

I really enjoyed this book. Although initially it was too familiar to the Emma Holden trilogy, but once I got into it, I soon forgot about the resemblance and enjoyed it very much. There were good and bad points about the characters and story, as I don't want to cause spoilers I will keep them to myself. I think it is definitely worth reading.

A suspense thriller about a cardiac surgeon whose sister was murdered 15 years earlier and who gets caught up in a complex web of deaths. Too many unconnected characters and a weak ending which does not really feel complete.

Disapointing

First the positives, this is a strong storyline with the potential to be a good book. Unfortunately the authors writing skills aren't as good as his imagination. The book is filled with back story crowbarred into place as he realises that he wants you to know a piece of information that hasn't been mentioned before. At no point did I enjoy reading this book and even the ending had the feel of convenience. A total waste of time and hugely disappointing. Exercise extreme caution if buying this book. Sorry Mr Pilkington I really wanted to like it because I loved the plot so much.

I initially had this in my tbr pile and never gave it a second thought. However I seen a copy on offer on Amazon and decided to try it. So glad I did. It did have me thinking a lot about the plot. Marcus has just got out of prison and hoping for a reconciliation with old friend Sam whose sister was killed. The plot did twist a bit and at one point thought I had it sussed out at the end but I did get a bit of a surprise but hoped it might have been a bit of a better shock as to what happened. As after I thought... Really? All in all it was a canny read and would recommend to try it if you don't want anything too intense or have nothing else to hand.

This just wasn’t for me, it was so tedious and drawn out. It felt extremely long and then still ended up leaving loads of stuff unexplained/unfinished. The whole plot was so far fetched and just seemed incredibly pointless. Even the high tension parts weren’t gripping, the main characters weren’t interesting and all in all it just seemed so ridiculous. It dragged on way longer than it needed then the conclusion was given around 20 pages at the end. It just felt so anticlimactic and almost as though the writer had no idea how to finish it either so panicked and gave us an all round disappointing finish, that literally left me wondering what exactly the point was.

the reason I gave a 4 star instead of 5 star is that the story does plod a bit in places and then suddenly goes full steam ahead and is very exciting and a well thought out plot except for the ending, How many times have we got to the end of a movie , sat there looked at each other and said well that was a strange ending that left you with more questions than answers Well this book does exactly that.To move from a deadly game where people are dieing and then sweetness and light at the ending. Pleeaassee. In this day and age?

Ending sucks

I loved this book. Kept me guessing and I couldn't put it down. And then came the end and it was so disappointing I almost gave the book one star. Sorry for the sports analogy but it reminds of when the New England Patriots had a perfect season then lost the most important game, the super bowl. This author did the same.......great book with the worst ending. Can he go back and change it, I wonder. I'm not sure I want to try another of his books if the same thing happens. He is truly talented but the disappointment was real. His Editors dropped the ball.
