Learn how to design discipline-specific literacy instruction that increases academic engagement and supports college and career readiness. This practical resource offers contexts and strategies for addressing a fundamental question that teachers bring to their work with middle and high school How do I support literacy development alongside specific content goals? By exploring the histories and potentials of discipline-specific literacy instruction, this book provides a clear framework for engaging students as active participants in the authentic activities and processes of each content area. It goes beyond content-area reading strategies by situating literacy within the purposes, audiences, and formats of each area of study. Readers are invited to deepen their own disciplinary knowledge to ensure authenticity in their representations of literate practices, to involve students deeply in the work of their disciplinary communities, and to support students’ continued engagement beyond the classroom.

I really liked this book, which I read for an education class. The concept of applying interdisciplinary practices in the classroom was new to me this semester, and this book did a good job acting as an anchor to apply what I was learning in my classes into context of what I was seeing in real field sites. Before learning how to be a teacher, I already had these questions of how we increase reading and writing across the disciplines, and this book does a great job of laying it all out and weaving in real examples and research. I feel like I will always look for ways to incorporate these strategies in my own classroom now, and I appreciate Rachael Gabriel's own writing style, who helps you feel just how truly capable you are.
