Not good.
From the blurb, I expected a suspense-y, military, action-y type of romance. What I got was … not that. There wasn’t much action, there was indeed romance but the writing was so bad that I had a hard time getting into it. I was frequently pulled out of the story.
The female lead lives in a very different world than the male lead, that much was made clear, but I was rather confused about some of it. It turns out this is a second book in a series—how would I know that though? (Found this book on StoryOrigin, where it’s only titled ‘Saving Elena’ not ‘Saving Elena … some series name book 2’ or anything of the like. I see now that its full title is listed everywhere else. If whoever listed it on StoryOrigin had bothered to list the whole title, or if the cover indicated it was partway into a series, I would’ve steered clear or looked into book 1). To be fair though, I’m not certain having read book 1 would’ve made this any better. It may have made it less confusing but obviously couldn’t atone for the poor writing.
The biggest issues w/ the writing, I think, were the author’s habit of telling instead of showing, as that does make for very dull reading. And their odd way of putting things. For example, during a steamy scene, telling the reader the exact number of thrusts he made just seems unnecessary, and made me feel less like I was reading fiction than a weird documentary or something. There were other things but I don’t want to get too graphic here or take up all your time with examples. I do suggest, if you’re considering this, to read or listen to a sample first and make sure it’ll work for you. Clearly it does for many people.
(After writing my own review I looked through some of the others and it looks like I’m the first or only to not just rave about this book, so I’m starting to wonder if I read the same thing everyone else did.)
No stars for the book itself. Though 5 stars for the audio production!!
These narrators were phenomenal! Both performed the piece inserting appropriate emotion and tones throughout—they were truly a beam of light during an otherwise poor experience. The overall quality of the production was flawless. Perfection.
