Elizabeth Lim grew up on a hearty staple of fairy tales, myths, and songs. Her passion for storytelling began around age 10, when she started writing fanfics for Sailor Moon, Sweet Valley, and Star Wars, and posted them online to discover, "Wow, people actually read my stuff. And that's kinda cool!" But after one of her teachers told her she had "too much voice" in her essays, Elizabeth took a break from creative writing to focus on not flunking English.
Over the years, Elizabeth became a film and video game composer, and even went so far as to get a doctorate in music composition. But she always missed writing, and turned to penning stories when she needed a breather from grad school. One day, she decided to write and finish a novel -- for kicks, at first, then things became serious -- and she hasn't looked back since.
Elizabeth loves classic film scores, books with a good romance, food (she currently has a soft spot for arepas and Ethiopian food), the color turquoise, overcast skies, English muffins, cycling, and baking. She lives in New York City with her husband.
Such a wonderful story.
This was a lovely myth based tale with magic, romance, and dragons and it was fantastic to be able to read the duology back-to-back. The main character, Shiori, is compelling and her story swept me up following her in her adventures. The author does a nice job of painting a vivid picture of Shiori's world in strokes of prose. Filling the world with characters that touch Shiori's life and sweep her into her exploits, like her brothers and stepmother and eventually Takkan make the picture even more vibrant. This is a great duology for someone looking for a sweet fable with light romantic vibes and family bonds.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of this book. While I adored the first book and I love the universe. I saw this book as pointless. The first book didn’t need to end on a cliffhanger and this whole book really didn’t need to happen. It took awhile for me to finish it because I just couldn’t get into. It was a constant “the battle starts” to “we won the battle” to “the new battle starts” and on. I liked it but compared to the first book I would for sure read the first book again and I wouldn’t read this one again.
Elizabeth Lim's Six Crimson Cranes series is a delightful and satisfying read. Drawing inspiration from various East Asian myths, legends, and folktales, Lim weaves a tale that could pass off as its own fairytale. Her meticulous world-building and well-rounded characters contribute to the book's charm. I particularly enjoyed the intriguing plot and how it enriches the well-known folklore it draws from.
Overall, this series is enchanting and a great palate cleanser.✨
As per usual Elisabeth Lim's story was complex and beautiful. The main character Shiori was strong, determined and brave...it was so inspiring to see her facing her curse. The plotline and set up were both intricated and full of details, and the open ending left me curious but also a little sad because I truly wanted this book to be a standalone.
I liked the second book better than the first but overall the story tied up nicely with reasonable consequences. The love interest was actually quite likeable, and Shiori was actually quite inspiring for how much she loved her family. I read the prequel before this (which was great and tragic) and Lim's storytelling is very easy to sink into.
This book is EVERYTHING. The romance between shiori and takkan, the way the ending made me cry so much when kiki supposedly died. This book does NOT let you breath. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. Overall, I adored this book
When I tell you this was an emotional roller coaster, I’m dead ass serious. I’m a sucker for a badass chick that is besties with basically anyone cool, and did I mention DRAGONS 🐉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🔖Fantasy 📎This book was so beautiful in every aspect. I couldn't put it down. The plot, the magic, the characters - it was perfect and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Elizabeth Lim did not disappoint and I'm already onto book 2, "The Dragons Promise.”
