With this book, Lucy Summers attempts to provide her reader with an extensive guide to the basics, history, beliefs, and instruments of the Wicca religion. The Book of Wicca contains nine chapters total, which include: (1) an introduction with a FAQ-section, (2) the principles of Wicca, (3) Wiccan instruments, (4) circle casting, (5) festivities and rites of passage, (6) spells, (7) a glossary, (8) index, and (9) recommended literature for further reading on the subject.
I have to admit that Summers does succeed in giving a somewhat solid introduction to the Wicca religion, but it really is for absolute beginners who know nothing of this nature religion, made evident by some of the questions and answers in the FAQ-section of the introduction (such as questions about worshipping the devil, dancing naked in circles, etc.). It provides those interested in Wicca with a nice framework of what the religion is, and what things are an important part of it. However, it is by no means extensive.
Summers seems to focus mostly on the outward aspects of the Wicca religion, giving much attention to spells, rituals, making an altar in one’s home, initiating instruments to be used magickally, etc. There’s little about the actual background philosophies and beliefs of Wiccans, which is usually only mentioned in passing and has usually something to do with a vague, unexplained concept of ‘nature is important’. The god and the goddess are briefly covered on a separate page in the FAQ-section, but that’s about it.
The Book of Wicca is not a bad book; it’s just not as extensive as it claims to be on the back cover. It looks quite appealing, and has a lovingly designed lay-out with plenty of illustrations and photographs that are all of high quality, and it does provide the reader with some basics on Wicca. However, this book should probably only be presented to an absolute layman’s audience, so to speak. Then it can be a wonderful introduction – I know it was to me when I read it when I was fifteen years old.
In conclusion, a pretty book that provides its reader with the absolute basics on Wicca religion, but does so in a sophisticated manner, accompanied by lovely illustrations and pictures. If it’s your first time looking into Wicca, or if you still consider yourself to be a true beginner, then this could be a book for you.
