Carla Peters is nearly immobilized by her empty, malaise-filled, affluent suburban lifestyle. No love in her life, strained relationships with both her daughter and second husband, Carla is desperate to move forward in some way, to connect to her family again, to find the intensity of love, to get off the Valium prescribed for her as a cure-all magic carpet, to escape the terror of an unknown stalker. Carla's one salvation seems to be her strong, powerful alter ego: Mistress Domina! But will the dangers of a secret life, of the erotic world of dominance and submission lead to more darkness, or to the light of one who has finally faced all her fears?
FATAL ATTRACTION meets AMERICAN BEAUTY...The woman's story!
I.J. MILLER has published seven literary works of fiction and one book of non-fiction. SEESAW was translated into German and Spanish and sold over 132,000 copies in the Bantam paperback. WHIPPED is available in English and German. Next came the short story collection SEX AND LOVE, and the novella CLIMBING THE STAIRS. The audio version of WUTHERING NIGHTS was nominated for an Audie Award in 2014. In 2019, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION was published to rave reviews. Released in 2022 was PROMISE FULFILLED, A Memoir of Immigrant Success, with Miller as the co-author. And coming in 2024, the sexy thriller, SURVIVING THE STORM. Miller is also a screenwriter, with an MFA from the American Film Institute.
"WHIPPED" is a good sensual and sexy read that takes one on a journey that begins with pure innocence of a married woman going through life as she flips from so-called social "normalcy" to another of intrigue...reflection...and redemption.
Approaching that path to redemption the writer offers a very clear and vivid flow of her secret life, secret money, and getting even with those who may seem to have legal authority and her sexual authority.
It’s a well-written character study. Being in Carla’s POV was definitely interesting: getting to know her feelings, her relationships, her struggles and feeling her loneliness. I loved the ending, how she stood up after a fall and how she won as herself instead of her (always strong) alter ego, it was cathartic. That being said, sometimes the story seemed to be dragged out and I found H’s character weird (I can’t really explain it). 3.5 ⭐️ rounded down.

I can't rate this higher, and I can't finish this either.
This is not badly written, it just hit one of my biggest pet peeves right in the eyes. I liked the set-up, we read so rarely about women aged around 50 in any other manner than being mothers or already grannies. I liked her inner life, even her anxiety and OCD mannerisms. That she turned out to be a dominatrix was intriguing. Until...
...well, until she has one of the most hoary tropes going, that of the dominatrix who does this to take revenge on past male slights.
That makes it a full stop for me right there, along with the wholly unsympathetic description of the submissive men. That's cliche and it's hurtful to both submissive men and dominant women. I can't read this and I'm not grading such a thing any higher than the fact that it was written ok.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I really got wrapped up in the main character, Carla and her transformation from weak to strong through her alter ego. I like how she analyzes her relationships with people and how they make her feel. The growth of Carla is powerful when she learns some things about herself. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes unconventional lifestyles and roots for the underdog. I was surprised that the author being a male could really depict what was going on at the very core of Carla’s emotions. I would certainly read another book by IJ.
