FBI, DISA, DoD, and A Murdered Professor!

"Frozen Justice" is Book 2 of the Heather Chase FBI Series, written quite well by A. W. Kaylen. FBI Special Agent Heather Chase is our heroine in more ways than one. She is not only an agent, but an empath, who can physically, mentally, and emotionally "feel" A murdered victim's death. The author is quite specific in describing Heather's mental status when she undergoes these investigations. If you have ever seen the TV series "The Good Doctor" and witnessed the episodes Shaun Murphy has when he finally figures out a way to operate on a patient, you will know what I mean when I say that I can actually "see" Heather's feelings of being shot, stabbed, or murdered just like the victim experienced. It is spooky and fascinating at the same time.
This investigation is about a murdered professor in a small university in rural New York. The professor's office was messy, making him appear to be a slob, but a professor who was there because he was working on some highly important research. Heather is by herself two days after the professor's murder. The city's police force and forensics crew has already mucked up any evidence she could have gathered on her own, and the police told the Dean of the school that since they already took photos and gathered their evidence, that the Dean could open up the first and second floors of the school for the students, instead of closing down the school. In other words, I don't trust the police in this book any more than I did in the first one. So, Heather does her investigation after the fact, but by taking off her shoes and sock and walking over the bloody carpet in the professor's office, she can still "see" the murder. Only thing is, she feels as though something is off about the murder, she just isn't sure what.
With her former partner, Bob Fairfax, still recuperating from a near death gunshot from their last case, her boss ASAC Hogan assigns another partner: not an FBI Agent, but a man from DISA (Defense Informations System Agency) John Adams to assist her. I'm not sure I like Adams. My daddy always told me to shake a person's hand with a solid, firm grip, just not so firm that you broke bones. He didn't trust a person with a limp as a fish handshake. Adams's handshake was described as that "of a dead corpse", lifeless. However, when he and Heather went out for Breakfast, he became a man after my own heart when this skinny, medium-sized man ate a plate of eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes with blueberries and syrup, as well as coffee, while Heather just ate her own omelet and watched him eat with fascination. Adams's boss is the DoD (Department of Justice). DISA sets up computer systems for the Government. Why is the DoD and DISA investigating the professor's murder? When Heather realizes that the professor's laptop computer is missing, and that the highly classified research he was working on was on a personal laptop, she wonders what's going on at that school. Why was the professor allowed to conduct research on a personal computer? What was the research he was conducting? Why is DISA and the DoD investigating? All of these questions leads to too many murder suspects for a normal person's brain to process: the police, forensics crew, students at the school, and key Government members. But even though there are about a zillion suspects, Heather will narrow it down and catch the killer. I gave this book a 5 star rating.

Having read Dirt Dealers, the prequel, and Silent Witness, book 1 in the series, I had a good idea of what lay in store for me as I started reading Frozen Justice. Dirt Dealers kept me glued to the edge of my seat from the first page to the last page. A page burner. An adrenaline jockey's thrill ride. Dirt Dealers was the book that placed A.W. Kaylen on my favorite author’s list. Silent Witness placed Heather Chase FBI Series on my favorite series list. As I said in my reviews of the prequel and of book 1, I spent my entire adult life working for a government agency that doesn't exist, going places and doing things that never happened, experiencing in real life what thriller writers attempt to write about. Far too many of them have no clue about what they are writing about, and have me tossing their books aside, unfinished. Kaylen is an exception to the rule. Kaylen may never have walked the walk, but still gets everything right.
Frozen Justice exceeded all my expectations. With each new book in the Heather Chase FBI Series, the plots become more intense, more convoluted, more realistic. Although each story is unique, these books can be read as standalone thrillers and enjoyed, they should be read in the order written to get the most enjoyment from them. The overall story arc and character arc builds on all the books that have gone before the current book. Many great thrillers are plot driven, while others are character driven. Seldom do you find a series in which the tales are equally plot and character driven, this series is one of the rare ones that is.
The way Frozen Justice ends sets the stage for book 3 in the series, Chasing Dragons, and I’m off to read it now.

Heather Chase is not your average FBI agent. Her traumatic past gives her insights into crime-fighting that are unique. So when local law enforcement in a rural town is faced with a high profile homicide, her ASAC sends Chase to solve the murder. Chase finds herself embroiled in something more than your average murder, however. The victim is a top secret government researcher, and his research is gone as well. Pretty soon a lot of the government alphabet is involved and Chase is saddled with a DoD agent slinking in and out of her investigation. Chase has her work cut out for her and she has to think fast on her feet if she intends to stay ahead of the bullets.
This is an excellent story. Heather Chase is so relatable. She is flawed and gutsy and someone I would like to know. She gets in her own way sometimes, but don’t we all, which is one of the reasons she is relatable. You can’t help but cheer her on as she follows the clues and leads in the investigation until she finally figures out the end games and we race to the exciting conclusion.
I am looking forward to joining Chase on her next investigation and can only hope the series continues on the same satisfying level as this story.

Exciting story that has 'WHY?' written all over it!
FBI Special Agen Heather Chase, 'Chase' to most has been requested to go to a murder scene, but why her? Why does everything seam 'off'? And most of all, why is she chasing the victim instead of the murderer?
Chase has quite the adventure! She keeps meeting up with Adams at this diner for pancakes, why pancakes? Why does Adams keep dissappearing like a Ninja?
There is a thing called a Toledot which, what does it really do?
This story really had me lost here and there, but then made more sense later. I am glad that Chase finally found someone she connected to, just didn't like that it was when he died that she realized it. Then it was like she took on his characteristics, which are like a modern-day ninja thats bad-a$$ like Dirty Harry!

This is book 2 in the Heather Chase FBI series. You can read them out of order, but they are so good, you should read them all. Heather is bright, insightful and she can also "feel" things about the crime and in particular the victims.
For this case, Heather is sent several hundred miles away from home an area that she is unfamiliar with. A college professor has been murdered and Heather arrives to investigate after the local police have mucked up the investigation and the crime scene. Heather does something unusual to connect to the victim in this case: she takes off her shoes and walks on the bloody floor of the crime scene (after all, she couldn't make it any worse, right?). She also is assigned a new partner for this case, but not another FBI agent. Instead, this man comes from the DISA. That leads to a whole new set of questions and very few answers. It's a good thing Heather is on the case because there are a ton of suspects and a ton of questions that need to be answered.

Seems like a routine murder case for Chase, yet any murder she gets called in on is complicated. At least this one seems right as the deceased was working on a DoD contract. It doesn't take long before she starts to discover "what went on out there in the darker corners of the world." Nobody is telling her everything, and everyone leads her away from where her instincts want to go. "It becomes clear to Chase they’re hunting ghosts."
Why would she get called in to resolve a Black Ops problem? Why are there two black ops teams, and they have different goals?
This is the most difficult case, because no one wants her to know. She has also become the hunted, which sends her instincts into overdrive.
The action and mystery never stop in this story. Those who like their reading that way will be buried under a non stop barrage on their mind.

I love a good detective story and this one was a good one. This was a police mystery driven by divergent clues.

Lots of action, and the clues will capture the reader as you try to unravel who is involved, and what all are they involved in. This is more complicated than it at first seems. This was a fast paced and gritty action novel. Much better than the first book in the series. This was a little tough to follow a few times with all the characters and plots/subplots to the story. Heather Chase didn't keep zoning out like she did in the first book and that made her character far more believable. This time she seemed to use her traumatic childhood to hone in on the bad guys. Loved the mysterious character John Adams. One minute he's there and the next he's disappeared like a ghost. If you like thrilling action filled good versus bad type novels, this is for you. Great characters and layered story line.

I came into this book cold without having read book 1 but it still made sense - well as much sense as a mystery where the dead person is not the deceased, where Chase's partner was not in the system and knew far more than he was letting on, and strange things keep happening. Lots of fast paced action, lots of confusion as the facts don't add up yet it keeps your interest to the end.
My one annoyance was the bad language sprinkled through the book - if you don't like f bombs in your reading (which I don't hence only 4 stars) this is not the book for you. No sex or even romantic interest, just lots of action intrigue and murder. I received a copy of this book via booksprout but this review is my own.

FBI agent Chase is frustrated with lack of information being told to her in this latest case, especially since they specifically requested her. Fighting her own personal demons, she believes in justice and is fighting for that achievement which is one of the reasons I like this new series. I really enjoyed this book, it was written well, a page turner. I thought the characters were described well. Although the culprits' motives were common ones, the storyline with its twists made the book very exciting. I can't wait to read the next story.

The action and investigation don't stop in this second book in the FBI Agent Heather Chase series. I enjoyed this second book as much as the first!
This time Heather is sent to the scene of a professor's death to investigate his murder. But immediately she gets bad vibes....something is just not right but she can't quite put her finger on what it is. Then suddenly the whole entire face of the crime changes and Heather realizes that she's in real danger.
This is a complex story that has lots of twists and turns. Heather Chase is her usual feisty self, and there are plenty of bad guys, investigation and strange twisty surprises. Loved it!

There's a saying in the espionage business, "to come in from the cold", which means to return from a dangerous assignment to a safe place - possibly an embassy, a safe house, or even back to headquarters. Sometimes the option to return simply doesn't exist, an agent is "buried" too deeply and would be discovered and captured if his/her cover isn't maintained. That situation can also occur in law enforcement when someone is undercover. Agent Chase is thrown in at the deep end, indoctrinated into something totally outside her norm, and she'll have to adjust quickly to avoid drowning.

This book was exciting and full of suspense! Special Agent at the FBI, Heather Chase, teams up with members of the Binghamton, New York police department to find the killer of a research scientist who was doing work at the local university. The case is not what it seems and neither are some of the people involved in the case. What is the truth behind the scientist's death? Find out by reading this intriguing book. I highly recommend it to other thriller readers.

Intense Crime Solving.
Speechless on the amount of detailed descriptions of the scenes and the entire case. Plot twist and character narrations are thrilling and entertaining. The story follows FBI Special Agent Heather Chase however narrates her actions but not first person; it does glean her thoughts and insights. I like the mystery and suspense. Sad about the “friend” Heather gains and sentimental about the gun she uses in tribute. Great ending. Reminds me of the cop shows: Unforgettable and NCIS.

FBI SA Heather Chase gets loaned to a small college town police force when a professor is killed by what appears to be a trained assassin. She arrives and finds out she is going to be working with a guy from the Dod that keeps disappearing when she goes to speak with him. This book is so intense that if you start it at night you will be up all night to finish it. This has been a great series so far and looking forward to the next in the series.

I enjoyed this mystery story. Heather Chase is an FBI agent sent to a small town to solve a murder. The more she learns, the more her life becomes in danger. I liked the twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout. I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy murder mysteries with strong female leads. Why was Chase brought in to investigate a dead college professor? She is about to find out, real fast. If you like spy dramas like James Bond ( in this case Jane Bond) type of stories, your going to love this book. Heart pounding, gut wrenching, fast moving story.

I am reading this series in order. I think the references are enough they could be read in any order and still make sense. This time Heather Chase is working with a new to her government agency. This guy is odd and not good at sharing information. Why is a professor the one that is the main focus. But all the twists and turns and exciting ending are all good.

Love following along with Heather Chase as she does her investigations. Very intriguing and realistic. Very interesting "seeing and feeling" what she see as her "gift" kicks in -- definitely an interesting bird's eye view of it all. Loved the well woven story and intriguing characters. Great series with an awesome FMC.

Heather Chase is sent to upstate New York to investigate a murder in the middle of the night. She is not assigned to a FBI task force but a secretive group that is working a little bit with the local PD. The leads appear and disappear rapidly and the chase takes many turns. An FBI story with a real twist that you don't see coming. I found this book to be well written and a storyline like no other that will have you reading late into the night.

Toes
This is the first book I read from this author but won't be the last. I found Heather Chase's back story not really present but it made her what she is today. A lost fellow officer, Adam's, who a mystery also makes her change her gun. I am looking forward to reading them all.

This exciting murder/mystery is a thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The MCs are defined, determined, intelligent, and diligent. There is suspense and violence in this page-turner. I loved this book. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.

Wow! Chase is strange and a one woman wreaking crew in her pursuit of justice. The story twists and turns and the excitement doesn't let up. Kaylen writes a fantastic story, I love it.

Heather Chase is a amazing FBI agent the way she thinks and reads people's body language is a gift. This series is becoming one of my favorites to read. A.W Kaylen not only grabs your attention with her stories she keeps you on your toes making you unable to put her books down.
