What secrets would you keep for the one you love? Dulcie and Caine have been married for years. They're perfect together, unsuspecting and living in their suburban home with friendly neighbors and a satisfying routine. Work. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. Then, Dulcie witnesses the murder of a girl in her own home...by the hand of her husband. Her next mov seems unspeakable; cover it up and forget it ever happened. And, of course, clean up his mess. She couldn't send her husband-and the love of her life-to jail. The trouble is, Caine doesn't know about the sacrifice she made or the lengths she continues to go to keep his terrible habit hidden from everyone around them. Dulcie isn't interested in him finding out either. Secrets are dangerous. While he keeps his second life a mystery to her, she keeps her clean up act hidden from him. Too bad she's now tied up in her basement. Too bad Caine decided that she was next.

There’s an extensive list of content warnings in the author’s page. PLEASE read them before even thinking of picking this book.
I’m still trying to decide my feelings but omg, that was so messed up wtf
Update: I can’t stop thinking about this book. I had to lend it to a friend because I need someone else to suffer and understand my pain. If you’re looking for a very dark & short read, this is 100% for you. Keep in mind: it is NOT a romance, it is NOT sweet, it does NOT have a happy ending. That being said, it’s been haunting me for a week after reading it. It’s amazing in a fucked-up way.
Also! Met the author @ Imaginarium 2023 and, in what’s probably the most extroverted burst in my life, asked her to pay for my therapy bills after reading Sugarcane. I’m still waiting. >:c
Sometimes, love is not rational. ❤️🩹🔪 Dulcie’s love for her husband, Caine, was truly limitless. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for him, including cleaning up after his pesky serial killing habit…
This book was short, dark and intriguing. Dulcie’s borderline obsession with Caine and keeping their marriage strong was hard to look away from. She was the true definition of a ride or die. 😭 The ending was so sad, but not really surprising given the events leading up to it. I think including Caine’s POV would’ve elevated the story a bit.
“It didn’t matter how close you were, how long you’d been together, or how in sync you thought you were, your connections to people were so delicate. So fragile.”
I met 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐀 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐀 at the FrightReads Book Festival at the Howard County Fairgrounds on 10/14. She was so nice and I loved talking books with her and hearing about her range of writing. So glad I took a chance on her book…SUCCESS!
This is a domestic suspense, dual timeline novel about a married couple…a couple who believes they know each other through & through…but do they?
The husband, Caine is a serial killer…the wife, Dulcie stumbles upon his extra curricular activities and instead of calling the police…this B!TCH helps him clean up his mess…unbeknownst to him. 🤯😲 Geez Dulcie…whatever happened to girl code!?!
The love Dulcie has for Caine is next level sick. Like girl, we need to get you some friends…”mirror friends” to show you how insane you’re being.
This was a fun one, but with it being a shorter book, 143 pages, I wanted a bit more. Like more “cat & mouse” vibes and more chemistry. Caine was so closed off the whole book I had a hard time understanding what Dulcie really saw in him (other than he was hot and a take charge kinda guy…ugh ok get I it but still lol) BUT perhaps it was the familiarity of Caine’s personality type that drew her to him…as she’s had someone in her own life who was very similar…
I really wanted an epilogue or more pages to dive into Caine…oooh maybe a sequel🤔
Definitely recommend this one and I’m excited to read more of Cassandra’s books.
This was such an interesting and fast-paced read, perfect for Valloween! Even though it was a short story, it definitely left a lasting impact. The eerie, unsettling atmosphere pulled me in right away, and I loved how the story kept me guessing. It had a dark, almost poetic feel to it, which made it all the more compelling.
The way the plot jumped through different timelines was handled really well. Sometimes, stories like this can get confusing, but I never felt lost, and the pacing was spot on. The shifts in time actually added to the intrigue, making the story feel richer despite its shorter length.
The premise itself was so captivating, a chilling tale of a serial killer and the extreme, twisted lengths his wife would go to in order to prove her love. It was fascinating (and disturbing) to see how far devotion can push someone, and it made me think about love, obsession, and morality in ways I didn’t expect. The characters weren’t necessarily likable, but they were fascinating, and I couldn’t look away. The ending left me with a LOT of thoughts, but they’re hard to talk about without spoiling anything. It’s the kind of book that lingers in your mind long after you turn the last page.
Overall, this was a quick, dark, and captivating read. If you’re in the mood for something eerie, thought-provoking, and a little twisted, I’d definitely recommend it!
Just how far are you willing to go to keep the love of your life? Would you give up your own? ...Or someone elses? Sugarcane was short and sweet... until it wasn't. A bloody brilliant love story between two soulmates, both refusing to let the other go, even when things go sour.
This was my first taste of Cassandra Celia's writing and I'll be heading straight to add more books by C.C. to my reading list. From the little tie-ins throughout the book to the flawless prose... I loved every bit. I was hooked on every single word and absolutely consumed by the obsessive devotion and love shown by sweet Dulce. My only complaint is that this wasn't longer. I wanted more. More. More. MORE.
Wow! Sugarcane is unlike any book I’ve read before. I loved switching between the present and years past and that we got to see the twisted mindset Dulcie developed out of love for her husband and how it ruined her in the end.
Definitely read the trigger warnings and feel no shame in backing away if one is on your no-go list!
Pros:
This book is written in such a way that it could almost be a screenplay just waiting for actors. It is descriptive, it is detailed and it holds so much emotion.
It is really amazing to watch how their relationship grew as it also falls apart. I usually don’t like jumping timelines but it serves a real purpose here and is very clearly marked.
Cons:
I don’t know that it is a con, but part of me wants this story all from his perspective too.
What a little gem of a murder book. Woof. I loved every second of this. The dual timeline was not something I was expecting but it worked so well with the story. I loved all of the twists in the present day timeline and how we learned just enough from the past. I love books that make you scream at them and this one is no acceptation. My advice: Always keep your phone charged, learn self defense, run at the FIRST sign of danger, and your life and mine, leave the man if you see him kill someone.
I was really into this book and I thought it was going to be a five star read for sure but I just felt let down by the ending still a good read would recommend the wife's love for her husband is mad and it shows how loving someone too much can blur reality this is twisted I loved the writing and the pacing of the book and I will read more from this author in future .
This story is one rooted in guilt, love and a whole lot of blood. I am completely okay with graphic violence, as it pertains to a story. It is a true testament to Cass' skill that she can tell me everything without beating me over the head with it. Too often, books of a certain genre can be graphic and unrelenting for the sake of shock value. Rest assured, this book is not that. I loved it.
I finished this first thing in the morning but I didn’t want to write a review until I thought it over. This book really had me thinking about generational d.a. But also how far does love go? This book is heavy but very well written.
I was not at all expecting to love this as much as I did. What a gruesome, thrilling, bloodily captivating short little serial killer story.
Little to say other than the synopsis is exactly what you get. Good loyal wife doing her wife duties and the husband has no idea. Until he ties her up on the basement and she is now one of his victims she swore she would never become.
It does alternate timelines which is easy to follow. I espcially liked how her internal dialogs with herself is described because it is very relatable (not the serial killer part of course) to most people in a marriage or relationship.
Read it if you're looking for a good short thriller. Highly recommend.
Scary Love! This is horror at its best! I couldn't put it down. I will surely have nightmares, but also, you can almost see how the main character got to the place she ends up. The author paints a picture that makes the story a little bit relatable. I don't want to make myself sound insane in this review lol but everyone loves, and everyone wonders how far does that extend.
I also appreciate that this book specifically made it clear that it is not affiliated with a religion. I read a great deal of books that are recommended from book groups, book boxes, or off the top charts. It gets a little sad when most of the books primarily have white christian characters, being myself native american & not christian. So it's nice to have Latina characters & not have a specific religion constantly represented throughout the book. I got this book from a website that does a book box. I signed up for the waitlist & bought a book from their online store. I have several book box subscriptions & this one looks pretty awesome!
The ending was not what i was expecting & I like that. I also enjoyed the different timelines so that the reader is left in suspense. The main male character is written in a way that truly terrifies me. He seems so sweet. Which shouldn't exist, but we all know based on real killers that it does. That is why we should all be scared of the nice strangers we meet. Makes you think twice about the nice neighbor that offers to help.
I am on my way to find out if this author has any more treasures for me! Write more please!
What secrets would you keep for the one you love? Dulcie, oh Dulcie. She is so consumed by her love for Caine that she literally lets him get away with murder... for years!!! She watches the man she loves turn into a monster and she still stood by his side. She still protected him. She cleaned up after him to keep him from getting caught (without his knowledge). She would rather live with the devil than without him. The whole time I'm screaming at her to either run or tell him that she knows. And, as evil as Caine is, the romantic in me still rooted for them to have a happy ending.
It starts out present day and flips between the present and past to give you an idea of how they got to where they are and is told from Dulcie's POV. I would have liked Caine's POV. I just want to know what was going on in his head throughout this story. And that is my only "complaint" about this book.
The end of this book was brutal. The foreshadowing is there throughout the whole book but I ignored all the warning signs. The last 20%, give or take, had my heart racing, skin crawling, bones aching, forehead sweating. I was terrified for these fictional characters. When I finished it I just stared at the wall for a good 30 minutes trying to process what happened.
So with all that being said... Did I enjoy the book? Absolutely Would I recommend this book? Absolutely (to a specific group of readers, because it is not for the faint of heart)
"Routine didn't kill marriages, people killed marriages."
This extreme horror novella follows the pov of Dulcie an incredibly angry housewife tied to a chair in her basement. She did everything right and helped cover her husband's indiscretions, only to end up in the same place as all those other women. For years she's ensured her husband—a legit serial killer—was kept far away from those who could stop his extracurricular activities, with the steadfast knowledge he'd never come for her... until he did.
"Sometimes love is not rational."
Those expecting a tale of a woman determined to thwart her husband and save other women should turn back to the thriller section and leave this alone. This story is about obsessive love and codependency and the belief that the world outside your house is a dangerous place (nevermind the murder dungeon in your basement). Dulcie wasn't going to turn her husband in and once that inital decision was made, so too was her own fate sealed. By ensuring other women just like her died, her own head moved closer and closer to the chopping block.
Speaking of obsession, I'm obsessed with Dulcie's narratation!! She's wild in the best ways, three-dimensional and flawed and angry... so so angry. Bouncing across time was delightful to see just how this relationship blossomed and subsequently soured as the secrets both parties were racking up took their toll.
Three words to describe this book: dark, gruesome, rich Three things I loved: The writing - I knew I loved Cassandra’s prose, having read Stars and Other Monsters last year. She mentioned in her acknowledgements that writing Sugarcane felt like coming home and BOY DOES IT SHOW. Her writing is so rich and suits the genre perfectly. I was torn between being completely unsettled and totally enamored. The timeline - Sugarcane jumps between present day Dulcie, captive in her own basement, and the past, brilliantly interweaving her discovering Caine’s secret life, covering for him, and going as far back as her falling for him. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The actual horror - It honestly takes a lot for a novel to make me uncomfortable. Sugarcane did it, in all the best ways. All I can say is that last scene is bloody, horrific, perfection One thing I didn’t love: It was too short. I KNOW IT IS A NOVELLA BUT I WANT MORE, OKAY?
This is Gone Girl meets slasher movies and Cassandra’s writing shines in this dark, bloody novella. Fans of horror will love this quick trip into the mind of a wife who’d do anything to protect the man she loves.

In this twisted love story, the perfect marriage masks a deadly obsession.
Mastering the art of non-linear storytelling, Cassandra Celia evokes fear as we travel Dulcie and Caine's relationship through to the present day. To an outsider, they are perfect together. But behind closed doors, their relationship crumbles.
Their love, once powerful enough to break down the walls they've built around their heart, begins to falter. Instead of trusting his secret with his wife, he hides in the shadows and pretends everything is fine. Meanwhile, she is left to clean up his mess - both literally and figuratively.
This story was truly fucking horrific, with vivid descriptions enhancing the reader's feelings of unease.
I'd be lying if I said I was satisfied with the ending, but I'm a hopeless romantic so take that opinion with a grain of salt.
Overall, fantastic read and the first I've enjoyed from this author, but won't be the last!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.
I’m just going to point out before hand, I absolutely LOVE Cassandra Celia and all of her books. They’re all so different and in different genres, but I eat every. single. one. UP!
This book was such a fast and exhilarating read. If I wasn’t so busy with life and everything going on, I probably would have finished it in one sitting. I read 70% of the book in maybe two hours, I just could not put it down.
I loved how it jumped from present time and to the past. I loved how quickly the story moved and the character interactions. If you love thrillers and murders and not-so-happy endings, this one is for you.
The only thing that bumped this down was that I was there was MORE. More build up and character interactions because I just didn’t want this to end and I wanted to get to know the characters more to understand their motivations a little more deeply.
Overall, I loved this book and it was such a quick and riveting read. Once again, I’d recommend a Cassandra Celia book to everyone I know so GO READ IT!
Wow, all I can say is wow. We pretty much see a life of a serial killer and sort of the mindset. A story of a husband and wife, and they both have their secrets from the other. One being way worse than the other. The wife was being the perfect wife, even doing the cleaning after one fateful night. Honestly, I wanted to feel bad for the wife once she found herself in that same exact situations she saw other women in. But she had many times to get help. The husband being a bit conflicted at first I almost thought he was going to change and maybe keep her so she could assist. This truly was a fun quick read and if you like serial killer books, or even those kinds of shows, you are going to enjoy this for sure.
"Sugarcane" is a ride you won't forget. You're not just watching the story; you're right there, living it through the eyes of the main character.
Dread is woven into the very fabric of this book. Every page oozes with an unsettling vibe that has you on the edge of your seat. It's the kind of creepy that gives you goosebumps and makes you question if you left the front door unlocked.
An overall feeling of terror and madness. As the story drags on, you're right there with them, feeling their fear, their desperation. It's not just a book; it's an experience that messes with your mind in the best possible way.
The pacing is relentless, dragging you deeper into a spiral of horror with every turn of the page.
"Sugarcane" is not your average horror tale. It's a masterclass in dread, creepiness, and sheer, unadulterated terror.
I liked this book, but the format in which it was told didn't work well for me personally. I think the alternating chapters of past and present slowed down the story in a way that was detrimental to the impact of the present time scenes. Telling this story in chronological order would have made for a stronger story with better pacing and more connection to the characters and scenes.
That being said,I like that the author tried something new with this form of story telling. Just because I didn't connect to this format doesn't mean others won't! I did really enjoy this story. The relationship between these characters was incredibly toxic. Both characters are wildly unhinged in their own ways. It was fascinating seeing how far each would go for their individual, twisted interpretations of love.
