Glausta Marcelio Prousto biografija, kurioje daugiausia pasakojama apie jo meilužius, o ne apie kūrybą, nors biografijos pavadinimas žada ir šitai.

Buvo įdomu sužinoti, kad romanas „Prarasto laiko beieškant“ savu laiku buvo atmestas ir nepripažintas pagrindinių Prancūzijos leidėjų; taip pat ir literatūros žurnalo Nouvelle Revue Francaise, NRF, kurį redagavo būsimas Nobelio premijos laureatas André Gide. Dėl sintaksės klaidų NRF netgi atsisakė publikuoti ištraukas iš romano pirmojo ir būsimųjų tomų. Kaip supratau iš šios biografijos, prie NRF sprendimo prisidėjo ir asmeninis André Gide įspūdis apie Marcelį Proustą, kurį buvo matęs kažkokioje neformalioje aplinkoje (gal restorane) ir susidaręs įspūdį, esą Proustas tėra manieringas, populiarumo besivaikantis švaistūnas, kuriam literatūra tėra viso labo dar vienas potyris.

Matyt, tai bus viena didesnių romano atmetimo klaidų Europos literatūros istorijoje. Priminė „Rugiuose prie bedugnės“, kuris NY leidyklų buvo atmestas dėl panašių priežasčių. Visgi „Rugiuose prie bedugnės“ nėra priskiriamas prie didžiausių šedevrų.

André Gide garbei reikia pasakyti, jog po metų, 1914-aisiais, publikavus pirmąjį Prousto romano tomą „Svano pusėje“, jis parašė autoriui laišką, kuriame pripažino klaidą ir atsiprašė.

This short but evocative exploration of Proust's life – with its music from the times and extracts from relevant memoirs – is well worth listening to, as it provides a lot of interesting context (some of which should perhaps have been obvious to me from Proust's own work, but apparently not ...). I actually wish I had listened to it before Remembrance of Things Past, by way of an introduction, but I'm glad I at least listened to it afterwards. Highly recommended!

This book is not the most analytical and probably not the most detailed book about Proust, but it certainly gives you an insight into Proust Life and Work as the title promises and if someone has read the 3000 or so pages of In Search... then it certainly doesn't cost much to read throw these insightful comments on Proust.
