Meet Attie Nichols. A middle-aged spinster and accountant, her life has never been easy. Now she's ready for change, but how much can she cope with?
Midlife Undercover. Regular citizen by day, and monster hunter by night.I should’ve known better than to think that my luck was changing, especially when it came to real estate.
My first real estate agent glossed over what life was like living in a subdivision with an HOA. She thought I’d love it. She was wrong. So, you would’ve thought that I’d have been a tad more wary when it came to my second major real estate purchase. For the price, I expected a swamp land. Instead, I found quaint cottages on a lake. I made sure to double check that there was no HOA, no city ordinance that would prevent me from painting every cottage whatever color of the rainbow I desired. Still, even as I handed over the check, I knew something had to be wrong because...when something seemed too good to be true, it usually was.
Sure, the howl that first night in the main cottage gave me pause, but nothing circled my home. I was going to chalk that up to a win. Then I met my long term renter. I hoped to reassure him that the rents weren’t increasing. It was a good plan until I looked through the open screen door and watched the big furry mound on the living room morph into a man. A hot naked man.
This was nothing I needed to handle before coffee, and without a weapon. Mental apparently, I wasn’t going to survive this life without a stockpile of weapons, some research, and a whole lot of actual notes. I’d have to document my kills, track what worked, and hope I survived long enough to record what didn’t.
So, I made my way into town, saw a disturbing amount of vandalism in the town square, and grabbed breakfast at the diner, office supplies at their version of a dollar store, which was all I could afford given the renovations the resort needed. I was in the hardware store when I ran into my realtor. She hoped to pop by later with a thank you gift. Standard practice. My first realtor brought a cheese board. The way Esther was smiling, my bet was on a bottle of wine.
One of these days, I was going to learn, but not today. Today was all about hard knocks, hard fights, and hard hearts. I once thought myself tough, but I wasn’t sure I was tough enough to survive all of this. The alternative, as far as I was concerned, wasn’t an alternative at all.
Midlife Undercover Series (Attie's books): Buyers & Beasts, #2 - The bad thing about this series is the ending comes too quickly. This is a great trio of series: Diana, Attie and Kenna . Interesting. Mesmerizing. Intriguing. Fun and funny. Gunner is such a flirt; actually, truthful but endearing. Tabitha is a likeable character, too. Well written, with good story lines that blend well with each new story, and great characters that have the reader involved until the last page. 5*
Homeowners & Horrors, #1 - Now it is time for Attie's story, which starts at age 50 and tells the beginnings of her journey as a Monster Hunter. Her first monster is a doozy and as that old Texan saying goes, 'Yer Honor, he needed killin'." A little sedated for the Attie as we know her, but she's just a youngin learning her new trade. 4* Midlife Undercover Series end.
Midlife Monster Hunter Series (Diana’s books): Banshees & Baby Showers, #1 - Well done, Di! I had a lot of fun reading this new series by an author that I have read for years. Diana, Attie and Kenna are loveable and my type of female, kick bum and take names. Kenna made me proud when she faced her cheating dad. Atta girl! D and A have a fun and respectful relationship and I look forward to reading more about this fun threesome and their futures. Monsters beware, there's a can of whoopbum with your names on them! 5*
Monsters & Minivans, #2 - This book is just as entertaining as the first. Fun. Drama. Monsters. Husband. It all made for a good read. The characters are growing in personality. In one spot, I knew D would come out on top but how? The solution had me laughing myself silly. This series may be paranormal but the reader cannot help but enjoy the contents of the pages. Sadly, I have no more to read of this series and have to wait for the third book. 5*
Poltergeists & PTA Meetings, #3 - Sad for the poltergeist and his family but good as an addition to this series. Diana's woes are increased by her mopey husband and two or three unwanted members to the hunt. Mixing in IT, voodoo and lots of bumps in the nights, this well written, funny with sad bits story was hard to put down. Attie has some great lines, especially with D's ex. Start with the first story and read them all for good entertainment. 5* Midlife Monster Hunter Series end.
This is a great series that keeps you totally engaged with twists and turns and laughs. What great ending to this second book in the series too! I love Attie and I'm so glad this book is about her. She becomes so strong as you read and she is confronted with some strange characters, like a shifter in the middle of her living room! This story in the series shows how Attie bought her camp and becomes a monster hunter! The writing flows so well, from the first book in this series to this one! I can't wait to see what is next for the women in this series. The characters, Attie, Diana and Kenna are great and so likeable and the writing so fluid the story line is so real as strange as that may sound. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Attie is so courageous - I really like her. I also admire her capacity to stand up for herself despite her fears and doubts. A loner with a big heart, she cares about people despite being a bit of a grump at her core, and is capable of generosity on their behalf. Also, she is bluntly honest with herself, which is a big plus.
A fast-paced new adventure in a world revealing its monsters brings her to find love rather suddenly - really left me pondering on the subject of fate...
in the new world she is discovering, Attie finds tragedies, love and death lie clise together
working to embrace new worlds, loss and changes
facing monstrous challenges without and within
an intriguing bunches of insights and adventures linked to the story of Attie - nice to see her as a developing person instead of the fairly entrenched personality I first met in a different book
lots of heartbreak joys and adventures yet to come, and I am looking forward to it all!
I have enjoyed the first two books in this series. Strong characters with a good storyline. I will just have to wait for book three and see how things go
