Translated from the English novel, Adventures of a Countryside Doctor

Click the Kindle edition or the Paperback button above to buy the book.

The fulfillment and frustrations of being a doctor in rural India.

My ratings: 4.5/5
A freshly passed out MBBS doctor decides to use his degree and knowledge for the betterment of society. He joins a rundown hospital in a remote area village of Kerala, alongside his doctor wife. Though his intentions are pure, he isn't prepared for the challenges thrown his way. Right from lack of basic facilities to losing out on precious family time despite a very basic pay grade, everything about the job is demotivating. What does he learn from his experiences and does he stick by the job?

What I liked about the book:
-> It is an eye-opening read, bringing forth a lot of facts about healthcare and medicine.
-> It made me develop a newfound respect for doctors and healthcare professionals.
-> The simple and effective first-one person narration and the well-connected flow of events makes this book, fit both as a professional memoir and novel.
-> This book truly captures the real challenges a community doctor faces in our society.
-> It hints at the darker aspects of the society namely corruption and callousness at the managerial level.
-> The medical terms and ailments have been explained in laymen's terms quite nicely making it easier for non-medicos to understand.

What I did not like about the book:
-> The flow of the events became complex at few points.
-> The tenses are a little mixed up.

Quotable quotes:
-> Atheist, agnostic, or believer; it is the basic nature of each individual that makes them behave the way they do.
-> Brooding all the time and not working upon it will only make matters worse.
-> Success also sometimes comes unexpectedly.
-> Food tastes better in the company of near and dear ones.

This was a well written view of the ups and downs of a doctor (in this case two doctors) working in a rural area and having to think about patients needs, family dynamics, and the business end of running a small hospital. The challenges portrayed were sometimes quite frustrating, yet also presented opportunities to work various problems in the best possible way given the circumstances. Day-to-day work built trust between patient and doctor. It made me sad that those who held the finances could not see the importance of the needs. It was evident why Dr. Thomas truly would have liked to remain all his life in that rural community. But the end had to come when understanding at every turn could not be reached. I felt his book represented the heart of general medical practice.

Fascinating read!

What an amazing book! And, what a wealth of experience does the author bring to the readers through this fascinating story! The true meaning of ‘Service to mankind’ and ‘Noble profession’ can be understood perfectly when you read this account from the life of a doctor in a rural area described in vivid detail.

This book made me feel like I was right there beside Dr. Thomas in that rural hospital. The story of Sally’s delivery shook me to the core not because of the drama, but because of the quiet dignity with which Dr. Thomas handles human pain and prejudice. It’s more than a doctor’s story; it’s a mirror to the compassion we often forget exists.

What I loved most is how Dr. Thomas brings out hope even in despair. Sally’s story could have been tragic, but the compassion shown by the doctor gave it meaning. Each chapter teaches resilience and kindness values the world needs now more than ever.

Book depicts things a countryside Dr achieved and some of his cases. It talks a lot of him delivering babies and things he did to improve the hospital independently.

When I wrote this book, I was apprehensive about how it would be received. Quite natural, this being my first book. I was therefore overjoyed when I got very appreciative personal feedback and more than a hundred global ratings on Amazon, the vast majority of which are four-star and above. This has given me immense confidence and I am now writing my second novel, which I hope to publish in August 2021. I am so grateful to all who have read my book, and especially those who have taken the trouble to post a review. Thank you so much!!
