Born in Wellingborough in 1972, Georgia was brought up with her two older brothers in a sleepy Leicestershire village until at the age of fifteen, her parents decided to move abroad, taking her with them. A new country and a new language helped her come out of her shell and for eleven years, she lived and worked on the beautiful island of Menorca.

Georgia wrote short stories and poetry from an early age but her real passion for writing didn’t truly emerge until she was 31. Writing for her own web site and articles for magazines helped to support her and her daughter.

Georgia felt there was a need for a strong British female heroine. She also wanted a main character that had a normal family, with problems that most teenagers/young adults in this country might be experiencing and could relate to. And so Val Saunders, daughter to Mike and Susan Saunders, was born.

Georgia spends time with her daughter in their little white cottage in Leicestershire and her life is filled with promoting her books, writing, running, and walking.

I’d say this is for a younger audience maybe 10-14/15 year olds.

Check out my January Wrap Up video youtube.com/watch?v=NBn9SQpYUvQ

Really good for those who are testing out genres and getting a feel for what they like.
Its got everything in it from aliens to magic to betrayal.
I think it'd be especially enjoyed by younger readers who want to read something a bit more grown-up - if that makes sense.

A combination of fantasy and sci-fi! The Thirteenth combines a lot of elements I love including, fantastical powers, teleportation, bookshops, nerdy references and a whole lot of action!

First thoughts:

1. Love the sarcasm and wit
2. Great action sequences and adventures
3. A bit too fast paced. Things were happening too quickly!
4. Some cheesy moments and dialogue. Not overwhelming throughout the book, but noteworthy.
5. Ending was fantastic! Twist, turns and unexpected surprises :)

In the end, everything came together! Now I just to need to know what happens next!

Georgia Twynham is the self published author of the new Thirteenth series.
I met Georgia while she was signing books in Waterstones, Nottingham toward the end of 2010. I liked the sound of it so off I toddled with my signed copy of The Thirteenth. I hurried to finish my then current read, and was then falling into the pages of this fabulous book!
It's a teen/young adult read (I'm a teen in the making at 39!!), with Supernatural happenings, and plenty of twists too. It's a fast paced book which throws the heroine into the deepend from the off.
Val Saunders, is a fantastic heroine, she is always in the thick of the action, and when things don't go quite right and she gets knocked and bumped, she just picks herself up and dusts herself down, and gets back on with it. Val has plenty of friends to help her along as well as enemies, some quite unsuspected.
In all for me a Fantastic first novel and start to a series, that any one any age will enjoy, a real page turner. Can't wait for the rest!!

I loved this book. It was engrossing and fun and visually stimulating.

You can easily identify with the characters. I instantly could imagine Val and her family, Shane, the whole lot, and I quickly found myself hating Delta. Ugh! She reminds me of someone I grew up with, which just makes it worse! She's the character you'll love to hate, or maybe not. Whatever floats your boat.

I found myself casting the book as I went! Personally, I see a quirky Alan Tudyk as Zac. I can't imagine anyone but my daughter as Val, because they sound so much alike, right down to their style sense.

It's a short read and I easily finished it in one day, but I love that. I just couldn't put it down. It's definitely in my pile of favorites, as it is one of those books that you'll want to pick up again and re-read as each part of the series comes out or just for fun.

I've finished the second book and am nearly done with the third. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the fourth in the series!

This teen sci-fy fantasy paranormal book, which is the first of a trilogy, is all about an 18 year old girl, named Val Saunders, who thinks she is a normal teenager but soon gets to know better!. The beginning of the book plunged me right into an action paced scene. It had me interested straight away. Then on, strange things start happening to Val and somehow, the way it was portrayed, I felt it to be weak. There are a total of 13 chapters and though each chapter is cramped with fast paced happenings of Val’s strange life with her new – found super powers (I don’t want to disclose too much), I didn’t find it gripping enough.

Val is very trusting of total strangers, which I really couldn’t deal with. How can you just trust a person you met just yesterday and discuss your most intimate things, which you have been hiding from your parents??. She forms relationships just like that and also gives up her feelings (which are portrayed as intense) just as fast!. How can one move on like that??. Also Val seemed to adjust to her new life quite quickly. Too quickly actually!.

Even in very serious situations, Val seemed to kid around. Probably, the author wanted to make the situation a bit light, but certain dialogues were simply cheesy. Also, some situations were conveniently placed in the book at such timings that it was pretty predictable. Some of the adventures that Val has were predictable too. You know how you watch a movie and you have an inbuilt feeling that the hero will eventually come out victorious. That’s exactly what happened. She just kept on winning the obstacles thrown at her, at such a level of ease, that it actually bored me. At times, I felt that the plot was slacking simply because this book is guided more towards teenagers than adults. I actually even began to doubt the author’s writing skills at this point.

There were some grammatical/typo errors in the Kindle version I received which annoyed me. If I had to stop in between, I didn’t find myself rushing back to find out what happened next. But I read on any way, for the sole reason of finding out why all this was happening to Val. Then I dragged myself to the 7th chapter and things started picking itself up!. The things happening with Val seemed more and more tougher to deal with, which interested me and gripped me. The author introduced such twists that I just didn’t see it coming and had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t imagine what came next and that had me wanting for more!.

Though there were certain cheesy moments like I mentioned before, there were also metaphors and other funny things said by the author which really made me laugh. Here is an example (from location 2692 of 5018 on Kindle):

Unexpectedly, the plane lurched to one side and Val felt her heart jump into her throat as she grabbed the edge of the nearest seat. “If we were supposed to fly I’m sure we would have wings,” Val hissed under her breath. (as you can imagine, Val HATES planes and flying).

The ending is definitely a surprising, shocking yet intriguing one. I am sure the second book in the series is just as interesting!. I give this book a 4/5 which by Goodreads standards mean I really liked it!

I am just wishing that the whole book had that gripping effect and Val had a stronger personality because that would have earned a straight 5/5 from me. The author really made up for the lackluster initial chapters and earned respect from me, in the last chapters. The whole concept of the book is attractive by the way, something am sure no other author would have thought of.

This is the first book I’ve read that was written by a self-published author.

Rating: ★★★★

1. Story/Plot: It was very original. I’ve never read something quite like this book before. Seriously, thirteen tattoos that gives you powers! Time-traveling, teleportation, witchcraft, action sequences, and magic! Not to mention the planets and galaxies. It was like a futuristic book filled with urban legend and fantasy from the past! All these elements were so different in many ways, yet they connected together to create this beautiful story!

2. Writing: Even though the story was very original, the writing bothered me a bit. In this review, I’m not going to be harsh for self-published authors because -I as an aspiring author- knows the difficult process of writing a book. Writing a novel could be irritating and frustrating. You wished you could just end the suffering by abandoning the book. Oh, how I wished those grammars and mistakes could just correct themselves. But what kept me writing was because of this wonderful idea…and G.L. Twynham have that. Now, what this book needs is the pen and eyes of an editor. I believed, if this book was given a run-through by an editor, then this book has the potential to become an International Bestseller.

But I'm not saying that the writing was bad. I was aware of the writing style before I even read the book. I knew that it wasn’t going to be as perfect, polished, and edited. I also knew that the story was going to be wonderful, and I was excited to read it. One thing I wished for the book to happen, the story could have been showed more rather than told.

3. Characters: They were so funny and witty, filled with humor and crazy stuff. But what this book lack was character development, and I have to agree with Pricilla (@thereadables) on this. I wished there’d be more emotions showed by the characters. I wished there’d be more concerns, dramatic events, hurtful situations to get to know them better. I want to know more about their struggles, push them to their limits, learn more about their histories and aspirations behind the main plot of the book. To sum it up, I want them to break out from their shell.

4. Ending: The final chapter was the turning point of everything. After reading it, it felt like the story was just the beginning, that the first book was just the Prologue of an even bigger story. I think, after finishing the book, the mystery of The Thirteenth could have been handled more carefully. I felt like there was a missing piece to the puzzle, and if G.L. Twynham could write it again, the book would have gained the 5th star to my rating. About the puzzle, I think there are more things that G.L. Twynham is keeping from her readers, but she’s saving it for the later books. As I mentioned earlier, this book/series really has the potential. I’ll be reading the second book soon.

And thank you G.L. Twynham for sending me a signed copy of your third book! :)

The Thirteenth is an unusual story. We have an 18 year old girl named Val, who thinks she is a normal teenager, but is very soon to learn how unusual she is. Right from the very first chapter you are plunged into action. Which I loved.

What I didn’t love was that I felt that Val was a tad bit unreal. She meets an older man in front of a tattoo parlor, and immediately discloses her story and the most intimate details of her life, which I find unusual especially since she has loving parents who she is keeping such details from. I won’t say exactly what happened to make her spill her guts to this stranger but it did have a very abnormal twist which is why she did it, I just felt that speaking to her parents actually would have made a bit more sense.

That aside I can honestly say I will be reading the rest of the series as they come out. The action was fast paced and kept you turning the pages. I just had to find out what was going to happen next. By the middle of this book I was turning page after page at a rate just so I could keep up with all the action packed drama. The twists and turns that this author throws the readers way just astounded me and I never saw some of them coming.

And the ending… WOW! I can’t wait until I can get the next book in the series. The way the author left this story off just opens up an entirely new world for the Sci-fi/paranormal genre. Such originality, that I must applaud her for.

I have only one recommendation to the author, correct the grammar/typo errors in the book there aren’t many but they always seem to be at critical moments, and make Val more personable in the next book. Because as she is now I just can’t understand why those people (sorry can’t name names here or spoilers may slip) all seem to flock to her.

I am definitely recommending this book for the Younger YA and up. And since it is such an action packed story I’m sure it will grab many right out of their seats.

All in all I give this a very strong 4.5 stars, just didn't seem to hit that 5 star mark for me.

Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Before Val's 18th birthday she finds something that was not welcome on her arm, a tattoo. She discovers why she has got this tattoo and meets some very important people because of it. She goes on 13 adventures to finally discover what has been happening to her and why she has powers to control the elements. You follow her on this journey as she finds out about her interesting heritage and who her true friends are. But will she be able to handle what she is about to go through.. will she be about to fight what haunts her dreams... will she be able to live up to the expectations of her parents?

This book is definitely very good, and I am very pleased with my purchase of it. My first impressions of this book were that is was going to be a bit too much sci-fi for me because I usually don't read books like this. The reason I thought of this was because of the whole magical powers, the dark-side and the 'space time continuum'. These are my thoughts after reading the book:

1. This book is very fast paced and I think would be an even better book if it was slowed down a bit, especially at the end, to allow the reader to absorb what was happening.

2. The book is packed full of action and adventure which I love in a book. Even thought some of the stuff that happened in it was a little predictable to do with the powers and stuff it was still very enticing to read.

3. The chapters began and started at strange points I thought and does make the reading experience a little different. I read the kindle version as well and there was a few mistakes in the books punctuation and word order at times. For some people this may not be annoying but for my it stuck in my mind.

4. The whole thing at the end was quite a surprise and I didn't think that was the reason for everything happening, b y this you can tell that Twynham thought about the books story line a lot.

My over all rating is 4/5. Or as Priscilla from the readables would say... READABLE.

The Thirteenth (The Thirteenth Series #1)
G.L. Twynham

This story is unique and different and fun!! This book takes you on a journey and it is fabulous! Page after page the story unfolds and the writing has such wonderful descriptions you are captivated. I really enjoyed it. This is not my normal read, but when I was given the chance to jump out of my comfort zone I took it. I am glad I did… I think you should too. I was completely and utterly captivated by the unique storyline.
Val Saunders is a great character! I loved her! I felt like at times I wanted to hug her and let her cry on my shoulder and then kick some butt for her too! I also wanted to tell her to grow up, get stronger and stop it a few times too. That is the thing with Val she became a friend, a person I could simply say “cut it out already...get it done!”! I think that is the sign of a good story if I am so vested I am forgetting that the person I am talking with is fictional. (We will not mention the stares I get when speaking to my kindle!)
The story will take you on a wonderful adventure and make you realize the importance of life. Your family and friends can mean everything. I would recommend this book to anyone. If you want a book with a good story, well written adventure it is for you. I want to tell you more about this book, but alas I am not ruining it. I feel you should take the plunge into the books and get lost chapter after chapter. I plan on having my daughters friends check this out too. I meant it when I said, this story is for everyone! Check out this wonderful author. I plan to continue my adventure with Val and see what happens next on book two!

YATR Panelist

Valerie has been plagued with haunting nightmares. Here lately they have became more daunting and vivid. The question is what do they all mean? Next, a mysterious tattoo shows up on her arm after one of the nightmares. Displaying signs from the zodiac, it completes a circle on her upper arm. So many question and no one seems to have any answers, until she accidentally teleports herself to a scene from her visions and actually saves a man's life. From there, her purpose seems to be clearif she can manage to stay alive.
I really was wowwed by this book. For one, I read a lot of books, and never touch one similar to the plot in this one. It is hair-pin curve after hair-pin curve in the excitement department. In fact, most of the twists and turns I never saw coming.
The characters are detailed very well with believable dialogue, and keeping enough mystery to keep you guessing. I have to ay I m partial to Valerie, not only does she kick some serious butt, but we share the same name.
This is a definite stellar start to a brave new series. While many things were answered, there is just enough questions left to keep the reader waiting for the second installment. It is a read I think most of us will enjoy.
Editing was superb, and the grammatical syntax on point here as well, so there is definitely not much I can say that I didn't like. Great series debut novel.

Valerie Saunders is a strong girl, with an attitude, soft sometimes, a girl who appreciate her friends. Valerie has been plagued lately with haunting nightmares but the problem is they become more vivid and she doesn't know why the keep getting worse. And if things couldn't get worse, before her 18th birthday she finds a tattoo on her arm. She keeps asking what are all this things and what do they mean? This review will appear on www.ieatwords.net on 7/28/11.

The synopsis of this book really intrigued me, and I was excited that the plot and story line took me on an awesome adventure!

Val is a normal teenager up until the point where she moves to a new town and wakes up with a mysterious tattoo on her arm. I don't want to spoil too much, but with the help of her best friend and a local tattoo artist, she goes on adventures beyond imaginable to find out what has made her so special--and what her true quest is.

I thought the pacing and plot of this book was really well done. I was intrigued by Val's character and mysterious situation. I also liked Val's spunky BFF, Delta. The mystery of it all kept me wanting to know what Val's tattoo meant and why she could do things no normal teenager could do.

The only small complaints I have were some unrealistic and forced sounding dialogue throughout the story. Otherwise, I enjoyed the adventure and action paced properly throughout this compelling mystery.

The writing got too much for me by the time I was half way. A lot of cheesy dialogue, not at all like how normal teenagers talk; it really distracted me from the story. I also didn't like how Val was so trusting of people she had only met the day before! I can deal with a fast paced plot, which this novel had, but I do not find it plausible when characters form relationships so fast, and do not stop to consider their actions or why certain events were happening. I think Val should have freaked out more, and realised what craziness was going on around her, but apparently she was fine with it and befriending the random guy who works in a tattoo parlour wasn't weird at all!

The last 30% of the book partially made up for it. There were a lot of twists which I wasn't expecting, it seems like most of the action and suspense happened near the end of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. I was not sure what to expect when I picked it up except it sounded good. It was...Val is an ordinary person getting her first summer job when things start happening to her without warning. The first thing is a tattoo appears on her arm out of the blue and she is thrown into life saving scenarios that she wants to help the people involved.

I loved the story and watching Val struggling to understand who she really is and what she must do. She meets and involves a group of people in her world and you get to know and care about them as much as she does. Except Delta...I was never a big Delta fan from the beginning and did not understand what Val saw in her. It has a paranormal/scifi twist and the world building was great.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

You know I really loved this book, it was fresh, original and seemed to somehow put my two favorite genres of books together fantasy and ScFi.

Its about Val a normal girl who gets a summer job in a bookshop. Though soon we find out it isn't just a normal story about a teenage girl, Val discovers a tattoo with strange symbols has miraculously appeared on her arm and thats where the story takes off.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who would like a fun read, the dialogue and quick pace keeps it interesting, and a sense of normalcy remains throughout with Val's normal teenage feelings.

Also I cant help remembering this book as G.L. Twynham was the one who put it in my hand and convinced me to buy it. lol.

I am an anti sci-fi person - books, films, tv. It took me 2 attempts to read this book, but I was determined and I am glad I persevered.

Although the writing, spelling, grammar etc may not be 100% - the spark of magic is definitely present. And I feel this first instalment will attract more attention as the series continues.

This story was never aimed at adults - just like JK & Harry Potter and just look at where SHE is - but the kids LOVE it. And, given time, I feel that readers of all ages will soon be caught in Val's adventures and left wanting to know more.

A raw talent for a great storyline, that I am sure will soon capture everyone's attention.

Do not be put off by criticism from adults as the story was not written for them. Please keep writing Ms Twynham.

I thought that the book was very different from other books I have read. I couldn’t put the book down. When I wasn’t reading The Thirteenth, I would keep thinking ,“What’s going to happen next?”

There were things in the book I never would have expected. The Thirteenth has a lot of action and a little bit of trust issues between the characters. In the beginning, Val was worried about who to tell about these strange changes happening to her. She was worried that people would think she was crazy. Also, she had to realize who her allies and enemies were.

I was surprised a lot while reading The Thirteenth, and I wanted to keep reading. I felt this was an awesome book and you should definitely read it!

I stopped reading this book after I was almost halfway through, I have no idea why... Picked it up again, and I have to say the book does get sort of better, I mean the pacing is always fast but the scenes and action get more engaging. I like fantasy and there are some of those elements in there.

I'm curious to see what happens with the main group later on.

I really wanted to like this book. The plot looked amazing and I even liked the characters. But there was a major flaw. I couldn't finish it. I got to about a third of the way through and felt there were so many other books much more worth my time. Why, you ask? Because it was so badly written.

I hate giving bad reviews but the writing annoyed me so much that I couldn't just stop reading without giving it a review. A lot of the phrases felt so out of place in the novel and a lot of it was really cheesy. And I don't mind a bit of cheese, but there's only so much a girl can take.

The novel is about Val, a teenager who when she turns 18 has a mysterious tattoo appear on her arm. Not only that, she can teleport, control water and not be affected by fire. Now this to me sounded like a really good premise for the book. It was something different, and I genuinely wanted to find out why this was happening to Val and find out more about her powers. But the writing, I'm sorry to say, got to me and I just can't see myself ever picking it up again.

I am really excited to talk about this book!
This book is very exciting, it focuses on a girl named Val who wakes up with a tattoo (No, she wasn't drunk) and weird mysterious things start happening. The book has so much suspense. It is very magical and involves so much imagination and creativity.
The idea of the topic is original and creative, there are many shocking things at the end of the book which makes it more entertaining and enjoyable.
I like it when a book involves teleporting, weird dreams, and mostly magic. This book has all of those and even more. Wow!
I also fell in love with the characters, Val's relationship with her parents is just wonderful, they are very caring and love Val just so much! It describes most daughter and parents relationships in a realistic way.
I can't wait to read the next book!

The plot and concept were okay, even if at times it felt a bit far fetched - even for fantasy/sci-fi. My biggest issue was the writing itself. A lot of conversations didn’t seem realistic or natural. The language and style felt quite young and immature. Honestly if I hadn’t known otherwise, I would have thought my twelve year old daughter had written it.
